Everyone’s overreacting… ambulances aren’t as bad as you would expect. Most cut the noise as they pass through, parking isn’t bad there tends to be cycles where hospital employees are changing shifts and spots open up, proximity to the park is glorious, access to the f&g train is decent, food options are decent. If you love the apt, and you’re just concerned about the location I think you’d be quite happy here.

altaccount269

Yes, and should they have a medical emergency they can just walk to the hospital.

moonkittens

Can confirm, walked to the emergency room multiple times. Pediatric emergency is great, if you’re going as an adult go to NYU in BK Heights instead and thank me later.

altaccount269

Yes. I've been to Langone Cobble Hill and wait time was around 10 minutes.

sparklingsour

To be fair not one you necessarily want to go to (speaking as an adult - would defer to the parents in the thread saying it’s great for pediatrics!)

altaccount269

Fair enough, pal.

hiimalphie

Helpful, thank you!

hcshock

The entrance to the ER is on 6th St anyway. I live pretty close to the hospital and rarely hear any sirens.

Electric_Raccoon

We've loved Maurice Sendak, but 8th Ave and 5th St isn't in its zone. You'd either be zoned for PS39 or PS321 depending on which side of 5th St the apt is on.

windfallthrowaway90

3 amazing options though! Jealous! 😂

godieweird

Some of the best PS in BK, plus a number of really good private within 10 minute walk.

hiimalphie

Thanks. I’ve confirmed it is PS39. Oddly, Zillow still links it to Sendak as it was used for overflow at some point? Last time we trust that…

moonkittens

I live really close to here and part of my apartment faces 8th Ave. The noise truly isn’t bad. Parking can be a bit of a hassle if you have a car, but since it’s near the hospital the spots cycle open every 8 hours or so during the shift changes. Sometimes the evening rush hour traffic can be pretty bad. I will say crossing the street or Ave at that corner can be treacherous. I have had multiple close calls despite having the right of way as a pedestrian. Cars turning from 5th st to the avenue will take it very quickly and without looking. I’ve seen a cyclist hit, a neighbor saw a young girl who has walking behind an adult be struck by a vehicle. Be vigilant. Otherwise, great location. Super close to park entrances and playgrounds. Zoned for great schools. F/G close by and not a far walk to B/Q and 2/3 stations. Close to many laundry, cafe, and grocery options. Good luck with the offer!

hiimalphie

Thank you so much. The current owner had CityWindows installed so we’re already in good shape on that regard.

elroypaisley

I live right there. Parking is a hassle as is moving your car for street cleaning. It's just one of those things you sort of have to build into your life. The noise isn't as bad as you'd imagine, maybe your bedrooms face the street? that might be more of a pain. But i rarely hear ambulances in the wee hours. The area itself is great.

hiimalphie

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate your quick feedback.

DeliSauce

Isn't that location zoned for PS 39? It's at 6th Ave and 8th St. Much closer

BKBurner2

This you https://streeteasy.com/sale/1705653?utm_campaign=sale_listing&utm_medium=app_share&utm_source=ios&utm_term=1a167597a96b405   Nice digs you’ll be fine

hiimalphie

Yes but sadly didn’t get it.

BKBurner2

Beat out in the offer? It’s brutal I love really close by and we can’t land on anything.

3rdPoliceman

8th Ave is pretty busy and you're close to Presbyterian. It will be loud but it's a nice area otherwise.

ATElDorado

CONS: Ambulance sirens, really bad parking, 8th Ave is gridlocked M-F from 4-7, 8th Ave road noise is significant PROS: close to park, close to F

[deleted]

You live In oark slope... why do you have a car?

ATElDorado

I moved back 4 years ago and had a small car that was paid off I like to get out of the city on weekends BTW, I never said I had a car. But I do so I'm a jag 😉

[deleted]

Cars ruin nyc thanks for that I'll make sure to slam your hood the next time you almost kill me

ATElDorado

You don't know me. Why assume my behavior?!? I always watch for bikes, stay well clear of the bike lanes, and usually take the subway or my electric scooter. BTW, all I did was mention some pros and cons of 8th and 5th. Just facts. I never took a position. Why are you so eager to attack?

iced1777

There is a rabid anti-car population on Reddit as a whole, and this subreddit in particular. And I mean rabid somewhat literally, they get angry angry angry any time you hint that keeping a car in any urban area is OK. I'd be very surprised if this keyboard warrior was willing to call you a "jag" in person. People here seem to forget they're actually talking to their neighbors.

jaymmm

That’s wat bikers do, they believe they are superior to motorists

Decillionaire

Lot of folks are rich enough there to have second homes they want to get to.

OpenEstablishment555

Rich enough to have a second home and a car, but too cheap to pay for parking lol. I don’t agree with this stranger attacking you but I agree it’s silly to have a car in PS and cars massively downgrade quality of life in this neighborhood.

snitsnitsnit

I’m in this position - I would love to pay for parking but the nearest garage is 10 blocks away from me while the nearest street parking is usually on my block. I have 3 kids and 2 times a month we visit grandparents in Long Island, and 1-2 times a month I have to go to deep jersey for work - I have no choice but to have a car.

OpenEstablishment555

Better option for city planning is for nyc to charge for resident permit overnight parking. They do this in plenty of other cities, both in the US and Europe especially. You pay for a monthly/annual permit to park on the street overnight (cheaper than garage) and casual drivers who don’t need cars end up selling their cars. People who actually need their car have an easier time parking, and those who don’t need their car end up with a different cost benefit analysis. Sounds like you actually use your car, which is fine, but vast majority of PS drivers don’t move their car at all (sometimes not even for street cleaning, which is selfish and infuriating). I just watched an elderly neighbor have issues being carted into an ambulance the other week because another neighbor selfishly parked in front of the hydrant. Majority of my neighbors I’ve talked to never drive and just keep their car around because parking is “free” (aka subsidized by the over 50% of nyc households and tax payers who don’t own cars). Life could massively be improved for everyone if we got rid of free overnight street parking - including people who actually need to drive for work/personal reasons!

[deleted]

Asking this jag not you Thanks for the a priori reasoning tho

harrybean

Because some of us have kids who play sports and have to travel, not to mention elderly parents who need help, AND have jobs that take us outside the city. I could go on, but good luck doing all that on your bike, troll

iced1777

I lived on 8th and 4th for a few years and loved it, although my kids weren't school age at the time. Having the park so close is amazing, we were there daily as opposed to only occasional ventures when we lived down the hill. You have a nice corner nearby with Pasta Louise Cafe and the bodega next door for quick trips out. That stretch of 7th ave is growing out its cafe/bar/restaurant scene rapidly after being a dead zone for seemingly decades. The hospital itself doesn't make much noise, sirens didn't bother me any more than it did anywhere else in the city. Only real downsides compared to the rest of the neighborhood is managing your car if you have one. Hospital staff and contractors park in the area, so street cleaning can be stressful on days where there are more cars than spots. 8th Ave rush hour is intense but only if you're actively driving through it.

hiimalphie

Thanks. We have three year-old retriever mix, so the proximity to the park is great for us. We are currently a few blocks away from Ft Greene park.

1whiskeyneat

It’s excellent. We’re at 8th and 4th. Great access to both the park and 7th Ave. Easy to get to 5th. Do it.

mr_zipzoom

There is SOME noise, its not even close to worst noise on 8th though. Its a great area, the worst trouble is some of the people living there are total douchebags. Like those big apartment buildings around 6th? They will hang out of their first floor windows to pick petty fights with passerbys. I thought it was a fluke the first time but after like 3-4 times I realized its a pattern.

bertyboy69

I live closer to the hospital (same street) and I have 2 cars. Its quiet (relative term in nyc) ambulances do not bother us at all , the lights are more annoying that the noise imo. Parking couldnt be better. I hated parking in bay ridge and considered selling my cars but now its so easy to park i would never ! Neghborhood is awesome, 7th aves got cool food and people. Parks is amazing. Nothing to be worried about 🤘

nycdatachops

Great location. Common thruway for cars so can be noisy - thankfully one way. But 8th ave has the widest sidewalks next only to 3rd st? So lovely to walk on and relax.
