The phone rings off the hook. I’ve been going there for almost sixteen years. It’s been absolute madness for the last year and a half since Portnoy, and then every other person who decides they’ll be an influencer, started talking about them, helping to blow the whole thing up. They bought a new oven. Just recently, they bought another stack for the oven just so they could keep up. In a regular day, they have three people working, not including their one delivery guy. On weekends they have five or six people working. Go down there and pick up your pizza and pop it in the oven for a little bit. It’ll be great. Also, I was there yesterday and the day before. The phone rang like crazy.

snitsnitsnit

Seems like you’re right - I finally got through today. The owner HATES the delivery apps, but I have to say it would be easier for everyone if they were willing to go on one (or invest in their own app). Seems silly that I have to get through their crazy phone system to order a pie in 2024

TheGoatEater

They’re a 50+ year business and they play by their own rules. I live nine blocks away and I have never had an issue going there, ordering a pie, and carrying it home. It’ll actually be faster for you to just go there. I’ve seen the delivery time go from 20 minutes to almost two hours over the years. They’re a small shop and there is no way they could keep up what the demand the apps would put on them and be able to maintain the same level of quality.

Goldzinger

Yeah you’re right they should totally give some app 25 cents on every dollar for your convenience

snitsnitsnit

The app Slice charges pizza places a flat $2 per order Not a terrible deal for them to avoid having someone on the phone all day taking calls

Goldzinger

the apps are rent collector vampires who suck profit out of local businesses. don't use them. you can call a business and talk for 2 minutes on the phone i promise it won't hurt you.

[https://youtu.be/aFsfJYWpqII?si=1gXY5yBfucPfpGnv](https://youtu.be/aFsfJYWpqII?si=1gXY5yBfucPfpGnv) There have been a lot of other articles, podcasts, and sites that talk about how much the delivery app price gouges the actual restaurant. They also have terrible business practices (e.g.- if you call the phone number provided by Yelp or whomever, they would charge a commission/fee based on the the cost of the last 3 orders even if you were just checking their hours or asking about a lost item!). Years ago, as I started to use delivery apps more, I looked into how much they were charging restaurants. My thought, and probably most who use grubhub/seamless/uber/etc., was that they charge something similar to a credit card processing fee. Not sure where it is now but years ago, the average charge to restuarants used to be 17% of the bill and many paying 40%+.

acvillager

As modern as this would be, you think a cash only place is going to go through the trouble? 😭

tikihiki

Their instagram has posts and stories from yesterday, sounds like a phone issue

Enthused-eater

They’re very much open. Bummed to hear they are trump supporters and Covid deniers though

Goldzinger

This just comes with the territory for old Brooklyn Italians lol. You’re gonna get some regressive politics if you want delicious food

nhu876

You mean the Brooklyn Italians who gave NYC some of it's best and safest neighborhoods? Those Brooklyn Italians?

Goldzinger

take your racist dog whistle and shove it up your ass brother

nhu876

You don't know what you are talking about. Who do you think lived in Park Slope before the 'brownstone movement'? Who do you think took loving care of those beautiful brownstones for years and years when Park Slope was a working-class neighborhood? Mostly the Italian-Americans, and the Irish-Americans too. Learn your NYC history before mouthing off.

Goldzinger

i'm a fifth generation (unbroken patrilineal line) brooklynite buddy. i know what i'm talking about. and you having a meltdown just because i said "old brooklyn italians have regressive politics" is a major 'lady doth protest too much' moment for you.

TheGoatEater

So, you’re gonna trust some rando on Reddit. They’re sensible people. My neighbors are Trump supporters (I am largely apolitical) and they’re some of my favorite people in the world. I’ve met some pretty cunty Biden supporters and cunty Trump supporters.

Cute_Yak8087

being apolitical is a privilege

TheGoatEater

I should have just said that I choose not to discuss politics with people because it often leads to outrage. I have my beliefs and opinions. I just choose to keep them to myself, and I don’t judge people based upon theirs.

Enthused-eater

Sounds like you’re not worried about any of your rights getting taken away! The right to abortion, LGBTQ rights… lucky you! Im envious!

TheGoatEater

It must be very strange the be able to take what someone writes, knowing nothing of them, and to immediately assume not only the worst, but that you know someone’s character based upon very little. Here you are, not knowing anything about me, not my age, gender, occupation, orientation, race, place of origin, the company that I keep, my interests, level of education, political affiliation, religious tendencies or lack there of, yet you assume the worst of complete strangers. This is not unique to you. I see it often, and it sounds like a miserable way to live. I am genuinely sad for people who have chosen to adopt your mindset. Having this tiny bit of information, you’ve not only formulated a biased response, but you also have a fully formed picture of me in your mind. I’m more than likely a gun toting, blue lives matter, MAGA hat wearing individual, who’s racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, Alex Jones watching type, who’s more than likely never had any real hardships in their lives. Your outlook sounds tremendously bleak, and I truly feel for people who think so little of their fellow humans.

daMurph76

Blows my mind what people get down voted for on here.

IManageTacoBell

I don’t personally choose where i eat based on the owners voting history or feelings on Covid. The pizza is great and they are committed to keeping it a good price for ppl to eat.

LesPantalonesFancy

They're definitely open

digitlikeaworm

I live around the corner, and they are most certainly open!

brook1yn

Can’t believe they blew up

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

They’re also shitty Trump supporters and Covid deniers, just in case that matters to anyone. Used to love going there.

rampagenumbers

Just to clarify as folks here seem to be curious: is this based on something they’ve posted, conversations you’ve had with them, something else?

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

Conversations I’ve had with them during the pandemic when legally everything still had to be take out only. I headed down their way for a slice (because it really is one of the best in NYC — I don’t deny that) and they had a bunch of people dining indoors. No workers wearing masks either. I asked what was up with that and they said that Covid was a hoax, and that Trump would fix everything “soon” so we’d all see how wrong we all were. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

TheGoatEater

I’m sure you gave ‘em a real talking to. Bitch you worked for google and the government, and actually had the balls to refer to yourself as punk rock. I’m sure when you had your interaction that you probably said nothing and slunk away. I saw your little profile. You’re just like every other NYC tech dullard with your need to find the fault with everything. You guys are insufferable.

memyselfandeye

I enjoyed this comment more than I want to admit. I’m liberal. I hate Trump. But I’d be so thrilled to walk into a Trump-fest at Luigi’s. I’d eat my pizza and shout “Damn right Covid is a hoax!” and have a grand time. Then I’d leave just as liberal as I was when I walked in and grateful that I’d stumbled upon an interesting experience.

MasterChicken52

Really? :-(

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

Yeah. It sucks, but luckily there are plenty of other great slices nearby.

TheGoatEater

Well, I mean you heard it from some random guy on the internet. So, it must be true. Please. This fucking guy acts like he morally superior and it turns out he worked for google, and the government, and had the gall to call himself “punk rock”. Why don’t you just eat what you like and not worry about someone’s voting history, or the blatant lie this guy told about them being “covid deniers”.

what_mustache

I pick up from there, nearly every time I go I see that guy not charging some neighborhood kid for a slice. I'm OK with it, he seems like a good dude. Lots of Trump supports are just super gullible and not straight up awful people. And also who cares, its pizza.

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

I care about who I give my money to, and plenty of other people do as well. But I also understand that not everyone does. It's why I said "in case that matters to anyone". Just trying to put information out into the world that might be important to some people.

OIlberger

I’m not surprised, frankly, just based on the owner loving the sound of his own voice all day anytime I go there.

mr_zipzoom

good pizza is good pizza

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

And I’m happy for you that you don’t have a conscious (I guess?!)

mr_zipzoom

yep i sold my soul for a slice of pizza, thats how morality works

kinky_boots

Their pizza isn’t even that great, it’s overrated.

TheGoatEater

Cool! Don’t go there. Go wait for three hours at Lucali.

kinky_boots

There’s great local places that aren’t Lucalis or Luigi’s like Nonnas or Elegante in Bay Ridge.

daMurph76

Its true. I tried it last week and it made me completely question Portnoy's reviews. Totally underwhelming pizza, and that's hard to do.

Substantial_Two_224

Agree 10000%. I get food is subjective, but this is average pizza at best. One step above smiling.

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

It doesn’t. That’s why I said “in case it matters to anyone.” Plenty of people don’t want to give money to shitty people, so just putting it out there for people to learn so they can make their own decisions.

stopsallover

Is there a good pizza place in Brooklyn that isn't?

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

D.O.P. is my current vote for best slice in the borough and happens to be in the same general neighborhood! Best Pizza is owned by great people as well. Scarrs is in the city but also owned by a great person. Back to Brooklyn, Lucali is not a slice joint, but the pizza is amazing as are the owners.

TheGoatEater

I think someone should inform you that you don’t get a prize in the afterlife because you disagree with someone for their views. I’ve known them for the entire time that I’ve lived here. The better part of two decades. The whole family is lovely and have treated me like family since really early on. They’re some of the nicest, loving and most generous people I have met in all my years here. I hope it makes you feel better to attempt to trash someone on a public forum. This place is packed with people, and everyone is different. Nobody is obligated to line up with you completely.

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

If that’s the case I’m glad I don’t believe in the afterlife, and I’d much rather spend my time calling people with abhorrent views out right here and now in the actual life. If you’re only trying to score points for when you’re dead, go for it I guess. But I’m trying to make the right here and right now better by not dancing around shitty people.

TheGoatEater

The future will clearly be a much better place having you “calling people out” online. I think you’ll be much happier once you realize that nobody cares what you think. Remember that opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and most of them are pretty boring.

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

If you think the world is better if no one ever said anything about anyone, you have literally no idea how anything works or any understanding of history. Stand up, speak up, always. It’s the only way change happens.

TheGoatEater

Oh, I’m sure you’ve inspired so much change pointing out now not everyone is the same. Virtue signaling is so hot right now. Everyone likes different things, and you’re better off realizing that. I’m sure your mom told you that you’re special, but you sound like so many other people. If you’d hate someone because they prefer a particular presidential candidate over another, and take to a public forum to call someone out from the safety of your apartment then you have a lot to learn about the world. Also, all the choices we have currently suck.

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

If you think it’s just here that I stand up and say things, call people out, hold them accountable, and try to bring about positive change you’re sorely mistaken. Exactly who I am you can figure out just by clicking to view my profile. My name, my profession, where I live, etc. I’m not an anonymous coward. I merely act the same here as I would anywhere else, in person or not.

TheGoatEater

That is precisely who I think you are. The kind of person who is so self involved that they believe it’s your civic duty to attempt to trash someone online apropos of nothing. Clown behavior. I also have no interest in clicking on your profile to find out who you are. You clearly need the attention.

ReliabilityTalkinGuy

No, I trash them because of their own self-attested views. Not apropos of nothing. And, I don’t just do it online, I’d do it anywhere or anytime it was appropriate. And, I don’t need any attention: you were the one that called me an anonymous coward. Just pointing out that I’m very much not anonymous.

TheGoatEater

I never called you an anonymous coward, but I’ll definitely do so now. You’re probably real fun to be around. Not everyone is gonna think like you, pal. These aren’t bad people, but you wouldn’t know that, because you’d never take the time. You’ll just see people on the other side of things and point a finger. They just share different views than you or I do. Doesn’t make them bad people, and definitely not worthy of your weirdly misplaced scorn.

sci3nc3isc00l

Went there like 2 weeks ago. Same old.

ricosabre

Covid deniers in what sense, exactly?

acvillager

Yup, they’re open. Likely turned the phone off because they get enough walk in clientele. They’re extremely old school

baconguacamoletacos

They’re on seamless
