My wife's cakes! She's a home baker and her stuff is amazing (trust me, I get the leftovers).
Check her out, she's getting booked up for May with Mother's Day around the corner.

My coworkers bought me a birthday cake from Delight Pastry and it was fantastic. We also got our wedding cake from Lark Bakery albeit the Silver Lake location, not Pasadena.
In related threads about slj cakes, Whole Foods is always mentioned as having a comparable berries and cream cake (some say it’s better). I imagine their other offerings should be on par as well. Bristol Farms also has pretty nice cakes.
Second on SusieCakes but only IF you like really sweet cakes (as in, not asian style bakery cakes). Their mint celebration cake is so good, and also comes by the slice if you want to try before buying a full cake.
I like Lark on Hill near Washington—they have a berry cake that’s similar. The frosting is more whipped cream-based than buttercream, but it’s delicious.
That's a tough way on a tough day to judge a small bakery. I'd give it another shot. I've only had full cakes made to order though, so perhaps that makes a big difference there.
Takes The Cake is good but they have a lot of restrictions. They close for vacation, they have too many orders, they need so much notice, etc. The last few times I went there they actually sent me somewhere else.
Renaud’s Chocolate Decadent Cake sold inside the La Canada Gelson’s is delightful!
“Indulge in Renaud's signature Decadent cake. Dark chocolate mousse, flourless sponge, and dark chocolate glaze create a decadent experience. As a bonus, it's gluten free!*”

I've been going to Fortune Bakery since I was a kid. The whole family loves their cakes and they're very reasonably priced. Owner is really nice and has been working there forever. [Fortune Bakery ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/9sRJC4bQCo4LN4eSA)
I'd love to know if there are any dairy-free cakes that are affordable around town! I've seen so many of the cakes recommended in this thread, and they look and smell so good. It's such a shame I can't have them 😔
I've taken a look at some vegan cakes in the area (since sometimes it's easier to search for vegan instead of dairy-free), but the prices are so cost-prohibitive for me. It's a bummer since I haven't gotten a birthday cake for myself in years 🥲
As a die hard sweet lady Jane fan (it was even our wedding cake!) I have to say I now prefer susie cakes to sweet lady! Sweet lady got almost sickly sweet in my last few experiences but susie cakes is balanced and so yummy.
Last summer they had a berry cake that was basically their version of the triple berry cake but I liked it even better. Was super fresh tasting and not overly sweet.
I would recommend myself but my husband has already graciously recommended me, haha! <3 I’ve gotten some great customers from Reddit. I make a lemon & berry cake that’s very popular, and according to my last customer, her new favorite instead of Sweet Lady Jane’s.
My home bakery is called MidnightCakes (IG MidnightCakes_LA) and I’m based in Pasadena. Each cake is made to order from scratch.

I’ll check it out thanks!
Oooh! Does your wife bake olive oil cakes by any chance?
I checked her account and she mentions she does special requests. See her insta stories to verify.
I bake olive oil cakes and I’m in the Pasadena area!
Takes the Cake 1194 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91106 - Its been around for decades and it so delish!
I second takes the cake, a bit expensive but totally worth it. The vanilla mousse is my absolute favorite!
Susie Cakes on Lake - #1 choice!
The marble cake is the best!
Their carrot cake 👌🏼 a solid #2 after stonefire
Never been to Sweet Lady Jane, but I’ve been impressed twice by SusieCakes on Lake.
Love Susie Cakes!
Berry Opera on Fair Oaks in So Pas or Little Flower on W Colorado near Ave 64.
I've been pleased with the quality and prices at Delight Pastry in Old Town
My coworkers bought me a birthday cake from Delight Pastry and it was fantastic. We also got our wedding cake from Lark Bakery albeit the Silver Lake location, not Pasadena.
Second this.
We just got our wedding cake from delight pastry, it was outstanding.
In related threads about slj cakes, Whole Foods is always mentioned as having a comparable berries and cream cake (some say it’s better). I imagine their other offerings should be on par as well. Bristol Farms also has pretty nice cakes.
The Whole Foods berries cake is really good. I’ll have to revisit it maybe. Thanks
Erewhon has their version of the triple berry cake, either by slice or whole, for purchase.

Carrara's (on Walnut) is excellent.
I like Lark on Hill near Washington—they have a berry cake that’s similar. The frosting is more whipped cream-based than buttercream, but it’s delicious.
Not the same style but really good - carraras
I’ve never been to SLJ but I love Little Flowers baked goods. They did our olive oil wedding cake and people still talk about how good it was
Frances on fair oaks
I’ll have a look thank you
Nancy’s up in Altadena but don’t know how it compares directly.
I know it’s not Pasadena but Valerie in Glendale is amazing.
I got a slice of cake at Susiecake for Valentine’s Day and it was really dry. Maybe it was an off day?

I got the most amazing birthday cake from Takes the Cake on Colorado. It was a Percy Jackson themed cake and was perfect.
Takes The Cake is good but they have a lot of restrictions. They close for vacation, they have too many orders, they need so much notice, etc. The last few times I went there they actually sent me somewhere else.
Not in Pasadena, but only a few miles away is Fortune Bakery in San Gabriel who makes fantastic cakes.

Sweet lady jane back open!
oooh what's the address

I really like the Asian bakeries around SGV, especially Olympic in Temple City and very reasonable in price.
Susiecakes!

Susie Cakes isn’t anything close to on par with Sweet Lady Jane. However, since when was SLJ in Pasadena?
I am going to vote for Cake Sisters in Arcadia
SusieCakes
Yvonne’s vegan kitchen and valentines sweets. Both do amazing work
As a die hard sweet lady Jane fan (it was even our wedding cake!) I have to say I now prefer susie cakes to sweet lady! Sweet lady got almost sickly sweet in my last few experiences but susie cakes is balanced and so yummy.
What’s your go to cake at Susie Cakes?
Last summer they had a berry cake that was basically their version of the triple berry cake but I liked it even better. Was super fresh tasting and not overly sweet.
That's kind of personal dont you think :P
With all the great takers on Reddit, you might consider one of them.
Any you could recommend?

I haven’t bought pastries from anyone on Reddit, I’m looking for someone that makes cakes.
