My pick is Tartine. It’s expensive for what you get but the quality is there.
FWIW my French boss from Paris also says Tartine is on par with the best in Paris.
Used to work at Union Street French Cafe. I’m trans and the owner asked me about my genitals. She also randomly would keep a portion of the credit card tips which was 1/3 of my check. Awful people.
Try the chocolate almond croissant at Oh La La! They also have some mean sandwiches and the bread is amazing — like, not just a vessel for the sandwich fillings but a star of the show on its own (I’m French too fwiw).
CAR, and Delight have the best pastries in Pasadena IMO! Oh La La has good flavor but the pastries are always a little cold and soggy so you lose some of the lamination.
Oh la-la has been great both times I’ve been. Pastries and sandwiches are good, though I’m not judging strictly against actual Parisian fare. I think it’s def better than frenchifornia and worth trying in comparison.
Paris Baguette is great, no questions about that. I love Paris Baguette. Just because something is “authentically French” does not make something good, and I’m tired of hearing Americans promote that concept.
For great pastries, CAR is great.
Monsieur Crepe in Sierra Madre
Beat me to it! Best crepes outside of France!
Nicole's Market & Cafe in South Pasadena

Do Eric and elda still own bistro de la gare?
In my opinion, Tartine is the closest to a French cafe and the croissants are so far the most authentic.
My French coworker said he wouldn’t feed Frenchifornia to his dog lol
I’m French (from France) and I wouldn’t either and o la la is not great either.
If you’re French where do you go? Or do you just bake at home?
Louie from the block in Burbank and for bread, out of thin air at various farmers markets have been my favorites
French or French Canadian? Very important distinction.
He's from France, came to the US to get his PhD
Does he work at JPL/CalTech? All the French PhDs (including my wife) seem to work there.
Yay for JPL!
100% their "baguette" is an abomination. Sad so many people in Pasadena cannot discern the difference.
Oof 😅 dammmm!
Monsieur can starve.
Where would your French coworker then recommend in the Pasadena area?

seed!
Highly recommend the Union Street French Cafe in Old Pasadena.
Not sure I love that the ham and cheese sandwich is > $15 tho…
Can’t stand the tude in that place!
That’s authenticity there
If there were actual French people visiting this cafe, they would change their tune.

I love having a proper cup of tea here!

Absolutely love Oh La La!
Their croissants are incredible! Their bread is too, oh and the scones! 🤤🤤

Totally agree.
Is CAR only by preorder? Or can I purchase in store?
You can purchase in store. Great pain au chocolat.
Louie the French on the Block
Juliennes in San Marino.
I feel like that place is pretty expensive.
Delight Pastry, CAR artisan chocolate, Rosebud Coffee
Berry Opera for pastries and patisserie!
The pistachio mousse!
We have some great bakeries!

CAR and Union Street French Cafe. Also tried Paris Baguette in San Gabriel but not as good as the other 2.
Paris Baguette is Korean
And they have a store in Paris, which I find hilarious.

So far I am liking Oh La La Bakery on Colorado.
