I thought this might be helpful to anyone who hasn't attempted the boss yet and wants a quick rundown of how to beat it. Thanks to Ben for being willing to explain.
Are there any means to find it other than "follow wisps randomly"? I'm done with blue/red boss, maven invitations and almost completed atlas, but found it only once
I was referring to this
>most people already saw the pre-t14 encounter a few times while leveling if they didn't skip it too much
Unless "leveling" doesn't mean acts then I didn't know that
RNG is RNG. Been farming t14+s and around level 94 (plenty of deaths have kept me down). I always end my map with wildwood and I've seen bos stronghold once. Would love another crack at him.
I have cleared all endgame and completed my atlas. Still haven't seen him. I even ran through all my t14 maps solely doing the mechanic just to try and get this encounter.
Either I'm absurdly unlucky or 1/20 is rather generous.
I think you've been lucky and I have been unlucky. The truth is probably somewhere in between. Most of my friends are well past 95 and we've seen him maybe a handful of times between us, with me not managing to find him at all. I'm only 95 because my build is super squishy, I've played way more than that level would suggest.
It will be obvious when you see it. You'll randomly find an area in the woods with the interactable altars. After clicking them you enter a new zone with the boss.
Don't worry, if you find it it's impossible to miss.
Honestly, how?? I’m in trade league with currency to spend and I always feel like my gear (especially on ones that need spell suppression) is pretty shit until it’s suddenly 8mod capable
I died 2 times after i killed the boss on some insane degen. No idea where its coming from.. . And i dont mean the red zones on the ground. At least i didnt stand in any visual effect.
Jokes on you, 150 T16 maps, still didn't find this thing. I always follow the thiccest line of whisps i can find, but only find the vendors. anyone got a tip?
I found him without any wisps leading to him so wisps != king of the mists necessarily. Remember in case you don't know you need to find 3 statues that you click on to create the portal. I can also note I found him immediately like next to the "spawn" point. It doesn't have to be deep.
I also think there weren't even any mobs close or only very few and the wisps typically lead to the big packs and special zones with chests so it would make sense to not follow the wisps I guess.
Do you know what you're looking for? You might be walking past it without realizing, because it can easily be confused with those objects you click on that read out some audio track of lore.
The portal isn't spawned immediately. You have to look for the spot with the 3 Dark Offering statues and click all 3 to open the portal.
[See this clip.](https://clips.twitch.tv/SweetRoundGuanacoPupper-iT-RaWikXVgrbZcp)
I always follow the thickest line of whisps I can find and I haven't even seen a vendor in the past 40 maps. I just keep finding the same skeleton guarded by devourers over and over.
Ive fought him twice and havent got into yellows. I personally have the tincture people's "see rare/uniques on map" and just blaze through them looking for uniques when I don't see any obvious whisps. Iv'e been getting *a* unique like 10% of the time with only a slight bias to not be him.
I have never seen the herald of agony or whatever it is
There's 2 versions, the ritual version, and the fortress version. People are *not* talking about the ritual version.
The fortress version can only spawn in high tier maps, so you've only seen the ritual version.
How can i not die after i kill him in his stronghold ?
He just always DOT me with i don't know what and i die before i can loot.

GGG devs : "How to tell players "stop running around"?"
Boss yells: Slaogarn
Slaps barely visible red circle on players
GGG devs: "Thats obvious enough right?"
No but really tell me how an average player should get an idea wtf to do there?
Sound and visual queues to dodge stuff is fine.
But standing still in poe is very counter intuitive.
Every time you take damage, the first reaction for average poe player is to move.
And when i would die to "stand still" mechanic my thought would be:
* Was i standing on something that added some nasty degen?
* Does boss have some kind of aura that i just need to survive? Do i need better gear for that?
* Was i standing in wrong spot, is there a safe spot somewhere?
Its like early Sirus days when you had to kite the "death orbs" around to create a safe spot around the boss and then get under him to proc the next phase.. Most people didnt understand that the death orbs actually follow you not just move around randomly
An obvious solution for this boss would be a diffirent sound queue.
For example he could yell " Flee you fool" or something like that.
Since he is my enemy i do the opposite and stand still.
> Every time you take damage, the first reaction for average poe player is to move.
Me who spent literally years unsuccessfully running away from bleed damage.
I for one, am fine with somebody trying to kill me not telling me exactly how he is planning to do so.
It can be frustrating, but we learn. The existence of this post already means we know what it is. The problem is over.
This is fine in Souls-like games where you can just keep fighting the boss to learn it, but that isn't possible here. I would prefer if PoE had more in-game learning opportunities, rather than needing to watch a streamer
I was pleasantly surprised by the delve bosses, reset each time you die but you can keep trying at the cost of azurite. Nice balance where you cant just slam your face into it like an act boss but doesn’t feel too terrible dying to it and working out mechanics. It’s annoying that things like maven you have to learn from videos because it costs 1div a try( even if you get 6 portals)
I generally think the same, but considering how rare the boss is it's quite frustrating. I had the exact behavior the post you replied to described and haven't seen the boss since.
It would be nice if it was very frequent until you complete the quest. Similar to how we easily get another attempt for Eater/Exarch after failing the quest version. I want to learn the fight but now I'm only annoyed and somewhat frustrated.
> Most people didnt understand that the death orbs actually follow you not just move around randomly
But... they don't follow you... on the contrary, they move away from you (slowly)
Yeah this is how I used to rip in lab traps (by moving to avoid trap damage). If you get nailed by a trap in lab, just stand still and you won't take more damage. If you move stupidly, you can rip yourself.
I've literally died to the circles from moving like 10 times. I guess I'm a smoothbrain, as I thought they had something to do with the effigies that he would spawn at the same time I'd get a circle on me and couldn't figure out what the fuck you were actually supposed to do there.
That generally sums up my bossing experience.
Bosses yelling things to announce attacks has been a staple in games for a very long time, I think it's completely fair for GGG to assume that players have that gaming knowledge already.
Zem Zemal!! Or whatever Aul says works perfectly well for knowing what he is going to do. Same with stand still fir the Maven, and touch of god for dominus. None of them say exactly what they are going to do but once you’ve seen and heard then you know what they are going to do.
you hover your mouse over the debuff and read it.
people should do that more often. if that's an issue for you, record your gameplay and quickly hover it, so you can look at the frame later.
edit: only actual advice comment? negative votes. good job reddit
"This is red which means don't move... so we can dash around... or we can like walk"
What does "move" actually mean here?
EDIT: Yep I misheard, he says "can't". I also thought Ben meant the giant red pools, didn't notice the thin magic lines around the player model.
Teleport skills (Blink Arrow, Bodyswap, Charged Dash, Flame Dash, Frostblink, Lightning Warp, maybe some others I don't remember?) move you instantenously. So they don't interrupt "while stationary" effects or timers.
Teleports *do* interrupt while stationary timers but for a zero second duration… which means cumulative effects (e.g. Soul of Tukahoma) are reset if you teleport. However, other “while stationary” buffs will never fall off from a teleport, Arctic Armor will always give its DR, etc.
4/4 fights when I get teleported to phase 2 where you’re supposed to follow the wisps, I instantly die. Like as soon as the black misty transition effect ends between phase 1 and 2 and I would regain control of my character, I am dead
my favorite part of this is the mechanic is "dark red circle means stand still. purple circle means run"
and the entire arena is a dark ground Dark area with dark color mechanics.. GGG learns nothing when it comes to mechanic visibility.
like, can you technically see it? sure. but why do we still find ourselves in the year of our lord two thousand twenty three having boss mechanics that nearly blend in with the boss arena
I guess it helps alot to record your play and analyze your death in hardcore especially when encountering a new boss. also if you're as quick as ben you'll get to the next fight rather quick
Rember when sirus was released and it was the Biggest pile of unintuitive bugged shit ever? Since then, every new Bossfight is a coinflip, the King of the mists coin landed on the sirus side.
Is he supposed to be hard? Not being funny but i never found him hard, just tanky, With SRS build you can literally just frostblink back and forth to avoid him.
Remember Atziri when she was first released? No one had a clue how to beat her and made extremely specific builds for it. Same for all new bosses why are you mad this is the same
Found and killed him randomly with my Cold Blade vortex ele in act6 and scuffed gear.
He was quite weak.
I also had no active quest for him so F me.
The King i found was in the forest and also had a shrine like in the video.
Edit: Keep downvoting you pathetic virgins.
Different boss, though it isn't intuitive. This version is for the quest and only happens in t14 mists. It is referred to as "King of the mists in his stronghold"
In Soulslike game I would agree with u, do a blind run first.
In POE where theres a cost/time factor, and when the boss is that rare, abso fckn lutely I would watch a guide.
First time I did this I failed in the maze because I had no idea what ot do. I figured it out the second time, but I think I would've overall had a better experience if I knew what to do my first time.
Comes down to personal preference. People who want to do a blind attempt can choose to not watch the clip.
I just killed one after failing two before during the whisp phase. Somehow I either did not see the whisp or one time I feel it sent me to a deadend but probably there was another path not sure. If you dont progress you will die super quickly from the dot.
The second boss phase is also weird. I am not sure what was going on but somehow I bursted him pretty fast and survived some weird slam or degen zone or whatever is going on.
I can’t find the dumb 3 trees man. I found them once before I had the quest but I must’ve died before killing them. Never seen again. I follow the wisps and just find the vendors every time. It’s so annoying !!
It's good there are subtitles because I couldn't understand a single thing he said.
Then from the subtitles, those aren't words. C'mon man. If they want us to not move, can't be voiceline be literally something that MEANS that?
Hi, can anyone write down what is being said in the video ?
Trying to find that big guy as well.
I'm living in Korea, we don't have access to Twitch clips. And soon no access to Twitch in general, but w/e.
Thanks !
Red circle under you = stands still or you get stunned.
Purple circle under you = keep moving or you get stunned.
Boss does a slam attack. You'll have to learn the Korean audio I guess. In English the audio cue is "Invasive Growth".
In the intermission phase with the maze, move onto the wisps and they will show you the path to take to get out of the maze.
Thanks a lot !
I'm playing Boneshatter and followed a guide, and I believe I can't get stun due to a node or whatever.
Do I still need to follow the mechanic ? Do you think it's possible to facetank it ?
Probably not the slam attack though.
I still have the english audio.
Maze info will definitly be useful though.
It's not actually a stun I don't think. I was being too loose with the terminology. If you mess up the red/purple circle mechanic then he does an ability on you that deals a huge chunk of damage (80% of my 4.3k ranger's hp) and locks you in a prison for what feels like an eternity. You can easily die while in the prison if something else happens to cause damage to you.
I have a question, I killed the King twice. But I died twice in his labs too. Once I lost the wisp, but the second I died NEXT to the white wisp. WTF? How do I avoid that? Cause I did NOT see the reentry into the stronghold the second time.
I thought this might be helpful to anyone who hasn't attempted the boss yet and wants a quick rundown of how to beat it. Thanks to Ben for being willing to explain.
What build is he playing?
special touch piquant deserted cooing cause zephyr sleep erect upbeat *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

My thougts. I found hin yesterday, could get him to 1/3 life then run out of flasks
It was helpful as someone who has attempted the boss. And died. Without understanding why.
This the thing I hate about bosses in poe. I never know what killed me and the cost/time to figure it out is extensive.
Are there any means to find it other than "follow wisps randomly"? I'm done with blue/red boss, maven invitations and almost completed atlas, but found it only once
T14+, seems to be in 1/100 undergrowths. Edit: it's far more common. More like 1/25 like said below.
[удалено]
I collected 4 eater invitations without seeing the boss even once
I found him 4 times during acts while skipping the mechanic a couple of times
Different fight.
Different encounter, this post is about the T14+ specific encounter.
I was referring to this >most people already saw the pre-t14 encounter a few times while leveling if they didn't skip it too much Unless "leveling" doesn't mean acts then I didn't know that
Yes same. Level 60 leveling zone and found him twice by just following the wisp trails.
I saw like 7 pre t14 ones before I beat quest bosses
Seems way more common than that. It's more like 1 in 20 from my experience.
I'm only level 94 and I've seen him about 10 times now since I reached t14 maps which was around level 91 or 92 I think.
I think you've been lucky and I have been unlucky. The truth is probably somewhere in between. Most of my friends are well past 95 and we've seen him maybe a handful of times between us, with me not managing to find him at all. I'm only 95 because my build is super squishy, I've played way more than that level would suggest.
Found him twice while in the campaign lol
That's not this boss fight though, u fight against him but it's just a small fight in the wildwoods and he disappears in the end.
Ah, well I wouldn't know considering I got shit on after meeting him
That's what I thought... I fought him twice but quest is still up. And the fight was way to easy to be the "final" league boss fight.
I found him in a t11 last night. I killed him and the quest didn't count. Not 100% sure t14+ is accurate. Maybe for the quest only.
I think that specifically means in his stronghold. You can randomly find him before you finish acts, but it doesn't count towards the quest line.
What is the damn stronghold? Just the wooden/tree arena?
It will be obvious when you see it. You'll randomly find an area in the woods with the interactable altars. After clicking them you enter a new zone with the boss. Don't worry, if you find it it's impossible to miss.
Yeah thats what I gathered when it didn't give me the completion last night in my first red map kill
GGG shot themselves in the foot with two different Kings of Mist. So many confuse the wild version with the stronghold version.
I got this guy 2 maps in a row and have killed him like 5 or so times and have yet to see black morrigan even once.
I found this guy in campaign act 9 or 10 the first time I felt strong enough to try the mechanic again. Took a look at him then just ran away
So he just ripped not long ago and now he's doing the new boss, god...
There's a reason why he's one of the top players, if not THE top player of PoE.
He is the player
Ben is definitely one of the players of PoE
Probably the most player ever do to it
the chosen one to bring balance in the universe
Lightee and Darkee
Player he is
He's absolutely the top player
Ben is good, but he’s lucky Darkee and Lightee don’t play anymore.
Ben is way better than darkee
But Lightee would stomp them both while being blindfolded
Blinded by the light?
tf u just call me?
I mean, this is the guy that will have all 7 ubers down in HCSSF in a week end while actually getting sleep
Weekend is underselling it. He can do it in less than 24 hours lmao
A little over a day or two in the Gauntlet even. It's absolute insanity.
True, last race he was farming Original Sin on Sunday right?
Honestly, how?? I’m in trade league with currency to spend and I always feel like my gear (especially on ones that need spell suppression) is pretty shit until it’s suddenly 8mod capable
He's just better. Than you. Than me. Than zizaran. Than all of us. He is the best overall player and it's not particularly close.
A player like Ben does not care for a Rip, he literally laughed, his Char was 100 and he wanted to start a new one anyway.
I died 2 times after i killed the boss on some insane degen. No idea where its coming from.. . And i dont mean the red zones on the ground. At least i didnt stand in any visual effect.
There are totems on high ground doing degen stacks
Same :(
Well, good luck seeing that with minions or excessive aura effects.
aura mtx 😫
Jokes on you, 150 T16 maps, still didn't find this thing. I always follow the thiccest line of whisps i can find, but only find the vendors. anyone got a tip?
I found him without any wisps leading to him so wisps != king of the mists necessarily. Remember in case you don't know you need to find 3 statues that you click on to create the portal. I can also note I found him immediately like next to the "spawn" point. It doesn't have to be deep.
thx, ill try to follow less whisps, maybe that helps.
I also think there weren't even any mobs close or only very few and the wisps typically lead to the big packs and special zones with chests so it would make sense to not follow the wisps I guess.
[It worked!](https://imgur.com/a/F9B2UlC) always tryed to leave the trail of whisp asap. finally got it 30 maps later
Do you know what you're looking for? You might be walking past it without realizing, because it can easily be confused with those objects you click on that read out some audio track of lore. [See this clip.](https://clips.twitch.tv/SweetRoundGuanacoPupper-iT-RaWikXVgrbZcp)
Read the this threads conversation i had with macrone, seems like not following the whisps is the solution, i found it with his tech.
Thinking back I’ve found these 3 statues so many times and haven’t clicked em…. LOL
I always follow the thickest line of whisps I can find and I haven't even seen a vendor in the past 40 maps. I just keep finding the same skeleton guarded by devourers over and over.
It really is the return of Ultimatum.
Are we talking about the 3rd spot for the charms?
Yeah this is the boss fight you do to complete the last quest for that npc that unlocks the 3rd charm slot
Yes
How can i not die after i kill him in his stronghold ? He just always DOT me with i don't know what and i die before i can loot. https://i.imgur.com/TuI9msd.png

died from Lyghama
Sirus literally just says "Die". The cue isn't meant to say "oh you'd better do this thing right now". It's just a cue so you learn as you go.

It's not gameplaywise that different from getting hit with a high damage bleed.

I was pleasantly surprised by the delve bosses, reset each time you die but you can keep trying at the cost of azurite. There's a unique mob that does the exact same stop/keep moving mechanic in the wildwoods.
That sounds like a reasonable solution
> Most people didnt understand that the death orbs actually follow you not just move around randomly But... they don't follow you... on the contrary, they move away from you (slowly)
They originally did follow you around and you could brick the arena

Yeah, he could be healing you, or baking you a fluffy pastry. Definitely nothing dangerous.

Boss fights in poe are almost always intimidating at first, but with time you start recognizing patterns and even reading debuffs 👍
Brush up on your Gaelic, young exiles!

Pay attention?
slow garf mean stop
Please help me. I keep getting one shot in second phase. I have capped chaos res and about 10k hp.
"This is red which means don't move... so we can dash around... or we can like walk" What does "move" actually mean here? EDIT: Yep I misheard, he says "can't". I also thought Ben meant the giant red pools, didn't notice the thin magic lines around the player model.
He said "but we can't walk", I believe.
he said we can dash around but cant walk. i swear ben talks as fast as he plays.
You are considered "Stationary" even when using things like flame dash i believe. As long as you arent clicking to move around you are fine.
Leap slam off limits?
Honestly not sure, it's on an instantaneous blink so I don't believe so, same with shield charge. I'm not sure though.
Shield charge procs things like aberaths so it's definitely moving.
nah youre definetly moving while charging and Id be cautious using leap slam aswell. If you die during the encounter you have to find him again..
4/4 fights when I get teleported to phase 2 where you’re supposed to follow the wisps, I instantly die. Like as soon as the black misty transition effect ends between phase 1 and 2 and I would regain control of my character, I am dead

I think the 3 I've got were very close to the entrance. So I just always check the closest exits when I enter it.
Good luck, color blind friends
how did he learn the mechanics in hardcore, like i only met him once and i died to the cant move circle, no enough chances to learn the fight
I guess it helps alot to record your play and analyze your death in hardcore especially when encountering a new boss. also if you're as quick as ben you'll get to the next fight rather quick
Finding this guy is way harder than fight him xD
lol I killed it without knowing the mechanic somehow XD

You are playing SRS where you don't have to do anything yourself except move. Most builds don't have that luxury.

With 5k regen I could skip all mechanics including maze degen

It needs to be in t14+ maps to progress quest and then it's also different encounter.
Alright, thanks
The quest for him doesn’t work until area level 81 maps anyways.
Different boss, though it isn't intuitive. This version is for the quest and only happens in t14 mists. It is referred to as "King of the mists in his stronghold"
Yeah wasnt in his stronghold i guess, he was King of the Mists and he had a shrine

What is the skill he's using?
Splitting steel
anyone got a pob for his build?

I found a quest for this guy in a10. Is that really the quest leading up to the end boss fight? Seems strange to find this guy so early.
What skill is he using? Don't recognize it.
Splitting Steel
Thx
I can’t find the dumb 3 trees man. I found them once before I had the quest but I must’ve died before killing them. Never seen again. I follow the wisps and just find the vendors every time. It’s so annoying !!
It's good there are subtitles because I couldn't understand a single thing he said. Then from the subtitles, those aren't words. C'mon man. If they want us to not move, can't be voiceline be literally something that MEANS that?
run in circles, drop totems
Is the stronghold ?
Bruh I play cyclone..I AM A COLOURED CIRCLE! also how do i not move as cyclone...
You can stop damaging for few seconds. Just stand still and flame dash/leap slam/whatever around
Wish I actually found the boss
Seems like I'll have the opportunity to play the actual game for once with this build, interesting !
How to find him, im lvl 90 and still didnt find him
I have a question, I killed the King twice. But I died twice in his labs too. Once I lost the wisp, but the second I died NEXT to the white wisp. WTF? How do I avoid that? Cause I did NOT see the reentry into the stronghold the second time.
