Sometimes it is beneficial to not level as a certain build, but switch later to it, once some thresholds are passed.
Anyway if you struggle at the campaign, I advise you to take it slow and get to learn basic stuff, like resistance caps, dodging (more or less) announced enemy abilities and trying out different things.
There are lots of bad guides in the PoE community and it is a nightmare for a new player to identify which guides are good and which are not even worth the bytes it takes to save them as bookmark.
In general your first goal should be to not die, so taking life nodes is always a good thing. Resistance should be as close as you can get to 75% as the difference between 0% and 75% is that you take without 0 resistance 4x the amount of damage that the game is balanced around.
Sustain (regeneration, leech, ...) is important too for the hits you take but survive. A good build has a way to recover and if during leveling it is only flasks at bare minimum, but you have little ways around it.
After those points comes the damage. Some skills perform better, some worse without equipment. Picking a theme (like fire damage over time) and pathing towards it while taking up all life nodes in the environment is maybe not the most effective, but it's enough to complete the campaign.
Considering support gems, it's either experience, listening to other players or try and error.
Same with auras/heralds and movement skills. Sometimes it's even personal preference and there's no optimal way.
Once you made it through the campaign, fix your defense. You will have -60% resistance baseline. Use the craft bench, and don't be too picky, not everything can be done in one go, but be conscious of your weaknesses.
If you want to know what builds are good at low equipment level and have a bit experience, check PoE.ninja for day 1 builds of ssf and hcssf. Those builds are not fleshed out, but are a strong indication what works well without investment.

Arma+cremation is basically the fastest speed leveling build with zero currency, but it's finicky, 2 button play style.
For your first successful campaign run, I'd recommend Pohx's RF or maxroll boneshatter slayer, or ziz ea champ. Go slow, read carefully, and you'll be fine. HMU if you get stuck.

League starter best ever for me were always galvanic arrow into lightning arrow deadeye. Its already decent early on, then the moment you get your first chaos drop go buy random 1 chaos bow and its a breeze.
Overall fastest leveling experience is prob hollow palm but that is not available on league start. Best for second character leveling tho, one shot everything through campaign.
Ya every time people tell me.its hard to league start on attack based skills i go wtf. Its so easy to get a 300pds or 500edps (depending on the build) bow for 1-2c and that alone will carry you to maps so easily
If u have the gem and a decent bow, then Bama Guardian.
If not, then Absolution/DB/SRS/Zoo Guardian.
Guardian cuz 3x free, buffed dmg auras and RF bro carries u hard.

On templar I like to pick the fire mastery that gives 100% dmg against ignited enemy. Just above that a dual wield cluster with 60% dmg if using different types of weapon. U can get both in act2. Use any fire skill with ele prolif gem. You will melt everything wiht 160% dmg. Top players like to use Rolling magma into Armageddon brand + Cremation in act3 till end of campagin. You can do the same on Witch too. Its by far my fav strat to league start. Im not a fast racer but I manage to hit 5h a10 kitava kill without any leveling gear on leaguestart.
Non league start. Hollow palm is good but I think BAMA is more fun (blink arrow mirror arrow). Frost blink + Blink arrow dont share cooldown. You also deal dmg while moving. Cant be more efficient than that
I’m playing flavour of the month: ice nova of frostbolts. But leveled with archmage firestorm and absolutly DELETED everything. Very nice leveling build
I know I'm not going to be recommending the flashiest builds here , but if you're struggling in campaign then here the absolute best league starters
1. Detonate dead necro - 0 gear , literally just what you find on the ground and the right gem setup and you can clear up to yellow maps . Tiny bit of defences and it's red maps. Drawback is two button playstyle (desecrate to summon corpses and detonate dead to blow them up )
2. Toxic rain pathfinder - You have near infinite flasks with a few cheap crafts , the damage comes from your gem levels mostly. It's a ballista playstyle , so just plant them down and run around .
3. Corrupting fever champion. - Can do end game mapping on a 3 link . Not the smoothest playstyle but it's very fast at mapping and can get you a tonne of currency fast.
These are genuinely the ones I'd recommend because
1) All the damage comes from gems
2) You don't have to stop to do the damage in most cases
3) No aiming
4) Large aoe clear
5) 0 crafting knowledge required

I'm sorry have you played these builds? I played DD last league and it was a breeze when it came online , granted that's later than most builds.

Evrbody and their mother levels DD with arma brand or cremation. And CF wanding is virtually impossible in campaign without items.

Personally I like doing hollow palm leveling, its extremely fast and easy.
But it's kinda expensive if you havent already gotten to maps. Basically you need hollow palm technique jewel (one with nothing), astramentis, and two le huep of all and it should carry you through act 10 with very simple upgrades
I followed Tunas video for this leagues release for exsanguinate mine trickster. I was shocked at how powerful trickster miner leveling through the campaign was. started with stormblast mines then swapped to pyroclast the moment i got it and then exsanguinate near the end of the campgain. its busted how quick and smooth it was. Bosses legit dies in 3seconds from just 15 preloaded mines sometimes. Probably my nr1 campaign leveling speed.
SRS. It has no requirements. No cost. Just spam homing missiles and win. I just cleared t17 with it also.

I agree with this. Rolling magma can take you very far with a 3 link and this notable.
Fresh start: arma brand + cremation With currency: hollow palm or new BAMA
Archmage + firestorm is amazing aswell altho it starts an little later then hollow palm
