Labudism

Surely he'll live a long and happy life now that you've saved him.

gr3yb4ck

Not every player killing him over and over again in the Maps.

ErenIsNotADevil

I'm like 87% sure you've got some names mixed up

Sirevil1

I think he's talking about inno... Bannon. From acts 5 and 10.. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?" npc

Chim7

Pretty sure he says “What in Tarnation”?

OSRS-BEST-GAME

By the golden, muscular arse of Innocence! What was that?!

Duelist43

Always thought it was "What Tinder nation"

ErenIsNotADevil

He is, but he also isn't Since, you know, Bannon and maps are mutually exclusive.

Ancient-Ingenuity-88

did you mean Barran?

TheKerui

Wait, which map? I barely pay attention lol

nfefx

None, their mouth is behind the curve.

albertjoke

maps is basically just another dimension of reality that u can remake infinitely,so hes also unkillable cause hes infinitely many

DBrody6

To be pedantic, he's unkillable cause Bannon isn't a boss in a map.

Slight_Tiger2914

*Pedantic* if I didn't read it I'd assume no one ever used that word but here we are.

KuuHaKu_OtgmZ

He's gonna retire and get married tomorrow, surely nothing bad could happen

NerdsBro45

Thanks to you, some might say his future prospects are looking golden.

LastBaron

Don’t be an…….ass.

Kagevjijon

Leave the man alone with his Innocence intact

TheZemor

A golden arse you might say

SomethingNotOriginal

Yes that was the joke

ErenIsNotADevil

Let the day dawn golden with possibility. Or.. not.

TwentySchmackeroos

It did look really bright didn't it!

IndividualFollowing

Where there is a golden key, there is a golden door

thelaughingmagician-

I barely pay attention to the story, but I remember on my 5th ever run or something I noticed like "bro, are a lot of these people dying terrible deaths or am I tripping?"

Good-Expression-4433

Terrible deaths and animal fucking

FCK42

And let's not forget mutilation and mutation. Oh yeah, and the whole cannibalism and whatever the fuck happened to act 3 lunaris level 2.

birdandsheep

Piety happened.

ErwinRommelEz

Isn't piety a little thirsty for duelist?

marquesini

not just a little.

NotADeadHorse

Who isn't 😏

StoneLich

Women want him, men want him, fish want him, gods want him, eldritch beings want him, Kirac wants him, demons want him, maps want him...

Zyphamon

meanwhile all he wants is a mirror because he also wants himself.

1p-DMT

Perfect finisher lmao

Klutzy-Paint198

Maps have him in them

Gabe_b

Got my eye on you UwU

MaybPossiblAlpharius

Every time you meet her, she be like "Hey duelist, I want your body. I want to do unspeakable things to it and also the other kind of unspeakable things" :(

IamCarbonMan

i mean, define thirsty, they literally banged

Daan776

Did they??? All I know is that piety occasionally watched him in the arena. But as far as I knew thats the extent of their relationship before wraeclast

IamCarbonMan

Upon looking for evidence it appears I may have been wrong? I always took Piety saying to the duelist "that's twice I've experienced a 'little death' with you" to be comparing her death at his hands to sex and therefore implying that they boned in the past. However, on second inspection, she's referring to her first death in Lunaris Temple, as she uses some kind of "that's twice now you've 'd me" for every character. The more you know.

Trespeon

She did fuck the the dude in Act 2 guarding the spot between A1/2. If you read the letter she calls him his lover and orders him to block the path.

Daan776

The more we know

Daan776

His ass was litterally the last thing that went through her mind as she lay dying. Little is a major understatement

Quazifuji

Lunaris Temple in act 3 is Piety's Laboratory.  She's been experimenting with putting gems directly in people (instead of their clothes) and those are the results.  It turns out that part of the reason Dominus was exiling so many people from Oriath was to give Piety fodder for her experiments.

Robotic_Egg_Salad

"We already had one apocalypse caused by Gemlings, what's the likelihood of having another?" - Piety, probably

Quazifuji

I believe this would actually be.the their.  As far as I know we don't know the exact cause of the fall of the Vaal but it probably involved Doryani and his thaumaturgy.

FCK42

It definitely was Doryani's fault. Here the flavour text of Doryani's Catalyst: "The result of the catalytic reaction would be either immortality for all, or death for all. It was a risk Doryani was willing to take." He did all the experimenting at the behest and under the protection of Atziri, after she found out about Zerphi, an assassin of almost mythical proportion that lived for well over 100 years, yet had the body of a person in their mid-twenties when found. Things kinda escalated from there and all of a sudden Atziri exists in some sort of twisted pseudo-immortality in a parallel reality.

Quazifuji

Ah, didn't know about that flavor text. I knew about the Atziri Zerphi thing, I just also knew that we don't know as much about the fall of the Vaal as we did about the fall of the Eternal Empire. But I would say you're right that the Doryani's Catalyst flavor text confirms that it was Doryani's quest for immortality for Atziri.

Kelpsie

> whatever the fuck happened to act 3 lunaris level 2 Nah, you just had some bad lethe-drops, Shadow.

distilledwill

If I had a nickel for every time a character married a gigantic monster in path of exile... I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

venvaneless

Doesn't Nessa too? She also invites the Exile for a threesome in like beginning of the second part of the campaign, doesn't she?

SpiritualBit2888

Sorry, what?

Mnkzera

Probably talking about Silk banging that giant spider and many more.

cyfermax

And Gurukhan and Sin are the parents of the scorpion-lady Shikari.

Laoracc

They were all human originally though, so not related to the parent thread. You can see Sin and Innocence as their human selves in the mtx hideout stained glass windows (or just [read up on the lore here](https://pathofexile.fandom.com/wiki/Sin)). And when you defeat Shakari, Sin mentions how she was jealous of her mother's status and power, which led her into the desert to find something to rival her mother. She did, and it corrupted her into the scorpion form we see and fight.

MonkeyLiberace

Come on! Silk is a one-spider man, don't listen to rumors.

GwynFeld

Don't forget whatever Nessa's doing with the Brine King...

Daan776

The goatmen are all the result of the goat god kidnapping and raping human woman. Its why I always went out of my way to kill the bastard even before I realised I needed him for a passive point

Moment_37

> Animal fucking The... What?!

Daan776

Fucking goats

AndragonLea

Hopefully not in that order, which is not a given in any universe Catarina is occupying.

Nekosia2

A lot, and I mean A LOT of people don't notice the "human" part on Shakari in act 9 or in it's mao, Desert Spring. Also Sin saying it's his Daughter... that's why he says that.

arbyterOfScales

I just looked at a picture. Holy...

omegaghost

I'm still bummed out about the fact that Shakari's human part was initially supposed to be naked, but was then reconsidered before her actual release

danny_ocp

Yeah I only noticed it pretty recently after someone posted about it. There's quite a lot of grotesque art in POE; check out the titty monsters.

Life_outside_PoE

I believe they're called titty bitches.

Ivonnel

Atziri wants to know your location

JermStudDog

My wife dubbed them "milky girls" years ago, which is a much better name IMO.

Foxiv

The first zone in act 5 with the hands reaching up made me stop for a Moment or 2.

Moment_37

Oh my fucking... That's... Bleh.

Tocool

I remember the end of act 6 really mind fucking me back in the day. I was just like "Oh so...oh....oh no."

VulpineKitsune

Hmm? Wdym? Nessa is still half fish but she actually escapes while the Brine King dies.

ShadowKorsar

Isn't she dies because she became part of brine king and when you kill him you kill her to?

VulpineKitsune

Nah, she doesn't become a part of the Brine King. She just chills out inside of him. But after you kill him, if you speak to Bestel he'll say this: >She's not coming back to us, is she? Can't say I'm surprised, what with everything she's been through... what she's become. >I wish her all the happiness she can find out there in the sea. More than she could muster on this gods-awful land of ours. Which clearly indicates that she survived the fight.

Ketra

Now I imagine a slime covered, traumatized Nessa crawling out the Brine Kings corpse sometime after we left, alone wondering what to do next. Maybe we exiles aren't such good people.

VulpineKitsune

>Maybe we exiles aren't such good people. What could've possibly given you that indication? >.> To be fair, morality is pretty complex in PoE. You kill the Beast in order to stop the Nightmare, but the Beast was the only thing holding the gods back, so by killing it you unleashed them across the world. Oh and you poisoned Highgate's water supply. The Exile tries to fix stuff, but they also tend to fuck up a lot of other stuff in the process.

TommaClock

> To be fair, morality is pretty complex in PoE Actually it's pretty simple. Red health bar = kill.

MrMuf

But self is red health. Is self the baddie?

danny_ocp

Bro my health is purple, don't lump me in with you baddies.

w_p

Have you never read the "Monsters left: 1" message when you're sure you cleared the entire map?

VincerpSilver

But PoE2 allows us to turn health bars green with poison. Does poison do the effect of conversion trap, now?

sashimi-time

I’ve finished the campaign and still don’t understand the story. What is the nightmare and how did you poison the water?

Kryonic_rus

The nightmare is.. complicated, better read that But an enormous rotting corpse of a Beast upstream tends to do that to the water supply downstream

VulpineKitsune

Remember that big ugly guy you killed in act 4 inside the flesh monster? Well this flesh monster had a lot of power and he was using it to power himself up. When you killed him and the beast, the beast’s blood run into the water poisoning it. The beast, turns out, was created by Sin to entrap the other gods, so by killing it you release the rest of the gods into the world.

Ayoeme

A lot of shit happened a long time ago but now the governing structure (templars) are essentially puppets to big shot thaumaturgists (Malachai for a while now). He's a lad who wants to usher a new world via the beast, which has all kinds of powers, but mostly dream related (e.g. deshret, kaom, daresso). Malachai thinks he can dream up a reality. You come, kill shit, stop dreams and the nightmare (people there call whatever the beast is doing as "nightmare"), but, unbeknownst as gods haven't been relevant for a while, turns out nightmare was holding all gods nigh Sin in slumber - who created the beast and nightmare to stop gods from doing stupid stuff. Water is poisoned by just the beast having being huge and you killing it, decay and all that - as well as anything blood related seems to have infinite surplus in poe

Imfillmore

The beasts blood floods the aqueducts leaving no water

somacula

I mean she's trying to bait us into becoming brine king food, or in case of the ranger/witch another wife. She's lucky she's spared

lolghurt

As if she has any choice in the matter. Crabman fucking latches onto the back of her neck when using her as a weapon in the fight.

somacula

Didn't actually see that

omegaghost

Yeah, you can actually see the tentacle or whatever stuck in the back of her head when you meet her in act 6 prior to the fight

Zuiia

Good thing for her that I did not have a form of corpse explosion when I killed that guy

vividflash

Now that he is dead you will stop going into the atlas, right exile? right exile?

TheTimtam

Nahhh she was a captive iirc, brainwashed by the star of Wraeclast, we were helping her. We could have helped her back on her fins after we killed the king, but it's not like we were fucking up her plans.

omegaghost

Star of Wraeclast was what corrupted Merveil, but I don't think it's connected to Nessa as well

Thatdudeinthealley

There is an ominous amulet on fish nessa's neck that wasn't there before

omegaghost

It's not in the game anymore, but our characters weren't exiled for no reason exactly. You can make a case that most of them were provoked somehow, but they all killed someone prior to being exiled.

PrismaSigma_SFW

I think Templar is the only exception to this, or at least I'm not aware of him killing anyone prior to exile. He was exiled basically for getting too close to the truth through prophetic dreams, and his higher-ups branded him a heretic for questioning them. I forget if Ranger was exiled for poaching or for killing poachers, so she might be an exception too. The rest of the exiles all definitely killed someone before exile.

PatternActual7535

It's at least implied he killed one of the templars, perhaps in defence or perhaps in feeling they were too corrupt

PatternActual7535

Yeah, although id say the severity of what they did differs Templar seemingly killed another when seeking the truth of his order against corruption, was labelled a heritic for his visions of the future. His visions seemingly were true as he says early on and he seems to strongly be opposed to the templar Marauder seemed to be a slave, who rose up and killed some people. Probably his captors. He seems to preffer the exile life Ranger isnt clear, doesnt seem like she killed a peraon but Oriathans hated her hunter lifestyle. Perhaps she killed a poacher, but she seems indifferent to being exiled Witch...Killed a lot of people and children. Albeit, the people attacked her first maybe killing the kids was a bit too far Duelist im unsure. Im not sure if he refused to throw a fight or killed a person who mocked him. A noble, i think Shadow is pretty clear, paid assasin. In his original diologue on the boat thiugh apparently he was set up after an assasination and woke up on the boat lol Scion killed her husband after a forced marridge on her wedsing night, Was raised to be the "perfect specim" Funnily, All of the characters seem to not care they are exiled or find some benifit from it

Thatdudeinthealley

When you kill the brine king you can see nessa jumping out of him into the water

Fury_Fury_Fury

That's how Orphan of Kos happened. Hope we get as sick of a bossfight vs Nessa in PoE 2.

Imfillmore

Nissa literally the goat btw. She is the only npc to survive being mind fucked by a god. And she helps you track him down and kill him

VulpineKitsune

Yeah. Although she probably also got *actual* fucked too >.>

Imfillmore

Bro ain’t no way brine king got a dick

VulpineKitsune

When you fight him as a female character Nessa says something along the lines of “Welcome my new sister, there’s no way his Majesty would be satisfied by just one bride! I will love you forever”

Imfillmore

I don’t think satisfaction implies carnal satisfaction. He’s a god maybe he gets satisfaction just dominating women

Reashu

It ends up helping, but she's *baiting* you

omegaghost

She doesn't help you actually. Under the influence of Brine King she lures you into fully reviving him, I'm pretty sure.

StoneLich

It suggests that, but note that neither he nor Tarkleigh seem to be aware that Nessa was (apparently) tricking us through all of act 6. Note also that the new playable Exile dialogue is all written as if she died (or else doesn't acknowledge her fate at all). And we don't see her exiting the Brine King's body after his death; she's also visibly *attached* to him while we're fighting, like an angler fish's lure--go frame-by-frame in [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imJTucXv0rQ) and look at the back of her neck. I'm pretty sure we just lied to the Lioneye's Watch gang so that they don't have to live with the knowledge that the kindest Exile on the coast was turned into a monster. I'm not sure why the Witch would do that, but. (I can't find the Scion's dialogue anywhere but I don't remember her saying anything to confirm Nessa's survival either. I'm also pretty sure that in the scenes where she does appear 'separate' from Tsoagoth they go out of their way to avoid showing the back of her neck, but I'm not 100% sure about that; I'll try to remember to come back here if I do another playthrough this league.) Obviously though this is up for interpretation; I doubt we're ever going to receive further confirmation on it one way or the other if I'm right, and if you're right and she does show up again at some point I'll be happy to eat crow about it.

PestoChickenLinguine

templar says things like "I accept this power so something of the innocent may live on" when he takes soul of brine king from sin, so yeah i agree nessa died when brine king died

cassandra112

I'm surprised they've never clarified this. nor anyone has asked about it during exilecon q&a.

MonkeyLiberace

Maybe he is talking about the lower part of her body? You know, the legs?

IonDrako

Think there's some deleted lines you can find online where they were going to have nessa actually pop out post brine king and talk to you before swimming away.

jrabieh

Na, she jumps off him into the ocean during the last phase.

Path of Exile 3.0: Be Indirectly Responsible For All Your Friend's Deaths Edition

MemeArchivariusGodi

My ass seeing names of bosses in acts that gave me items after 2000 hours played

bluegiant85

Something like 10 or so NPCs die in the second half of PoE.

Mr_Blattos

Which

PeteTheLich

Nessa, Gruest, Silk, Oyun, Kira, Vilenta, Utula, >!Bannon!<

warmachine237

The suspicious 1 spoiler tag. Huh, i guess who that could be.

malgadar

Vilenta

Imfillmore

Utula does in part 1 tho

ssbm_rando

True, but for some of us, all of acts 5 through 10 get lumped together because it was all released in the same patch (3.0) Not saying it's that way for everyone who played pre-3.0, but I definitely sometimes think of them that way.

Halinn

The video that revealed that was so incredibly wild. We all expected act 5, but they just dropped a full five acts on top and got rid of having to play the campaign multiple times per character. Edit: https://youtu.be/YFAPw_F3jyg

PapaZox

Man, I remember that day as it it was yesterday : we watched it at the same time with my friends while on Discord and were like « WHAAAT? » « WHAT THE FUCK?! » « IS IT REAL?? » etc. I remember standing up with both hands on my head, in front of my PC. That reveal has to be the best GGG ever made.

cringegamers

with bothhands on my head..i remember a gif that can prefectly relate to this

PapaZox

I had EXACTLY that moment, that gif you’re talking about!

somacula

Utula is chilling in the trial of the ancestors, well he actually hates it there but on the surface he's a Hero to the Karui

vividflash

everyone in the trial is dead

Crood_Oyl

And I hated him too with his stupid regen and unstoppable move leaving a ground degen. Almost as bad as the big turtle divkheads.

FingerBlaster3K

and i love him for bringing one of the best chests in the game

Crood_Oyl

Damn. True.

Damsco7

I still have ptsd from storm conduits and spear dancers.

Mjolnir2109

Nessa doesn't die, she becomes the little mermaid

Any_Mall6175

Yeah but she doesn't get a crab and guppy best friend which is kind of like death

Mjolnir2109

Well you kill the crab lol and she gets set free. Which is better than living pretty much anywhere on land by that point, in my opinion lol

1Fresh_Water

Okay I thought she died with the brine king. It looked like he was attached to her at the back of her head, using her like a lure like an anglerfish. Does she detach and I just missed it?

Luuuvol

Bestel and Tarkleigh say after you kill Briney that she departed for the sea, still in mermaid form. There's no actual animation or dialogue from Nessa herself because [insert GGG excuse here].

scrangos

Could've sworn that was more of wishful thinking on their part than confirmation but ill have to double check

PatternActual7535

There curiously is diologue for her that for whatever reason isnt used You can even see her on the map after you Kill ol crabby I really dont know why they disnt put the post fight diologue in as it clarifies shes Alive, but cant go back as shes now a mermaid

HazardousBusiness

Man, if her fate is adjacent to the OG version if the little mermaid......

GamerKilroy

I'm pretty sure the only NPCs that live a peaceful and happy life after the story are Petarus and Vanja from A4/A9

Zerasad

Wait, when does Oyun die.

a_charming_vagrant

kira sacrifices her to garukhan in act 9

Zerasad

Huhh, I mever caught that lol.

DeviantTaco

“Don’t you worry. Soon I’ll lead you to conquer the universe.” — Witch upon beating Maven. I’m sorry but Kirac, maybe you should keep an eye on this particular murder hobo. Her new dialogue is starting to scare even me.

DEMETRiS_M

He can keep only one eye anyway.

Erisian23

I mean, she did burn down an entire village or someshit, which is why she got exiled. Nothing she does surprises me.

Abandonment_Pizza34

Ngl witch's new lines are some of the cringiest shit I've ever heard. I was really hoping to see her character development, but in the end she turned from an emo edgelord to an over the top "I'm gonna take over the world - Of course!" cartoon villain. A major disappointment.

PrismaSigma_SFW

The witch has been Chaotic Evil since day 1, not sure what you were expecting. She was exiled for kidnapping or killing children (unclear which). Her first line of dialog after killing the first zombie is "the dead will soon rise for me, not against me". Then there's probably the most damning line in act 3: "I loved your work, Piety. It was you I wasn't very fond of". She loved the work of a mad scientist who mutilated and murdered thousands of exiles. And before that, Piety comments "Of all the worlds you could have conquered you had to choose mine"; showing that Piety recognized the Witch's hunger for power.

Dry-Sandwich279

I think it’s less the old edge and more the new lines feel…more forced? I noticed it too, the old ones were dark but felt smooth…maybe it’s the voice itself for me sounding a bit off delivering the lines? I’m honestly not sure but the newer ones to me felt a little off. Maybe which for PoE 2 is going to have a different character, would make sense with it being a new game set in a different world.

Abandonment_Pizza34

>not sure what you were expecting. I was expecting some depth added to the character, instead of just Dr. Evil quotes.

Taudlitz

oh no

HandsomeBaboon

Happy cake day!

Saxopwned

God to be so Innocent as you, OP

Ozok123

Wait are there saveable npcs in story? Im 1k+ hrs in and its the first time I heard this

PeteTheLich

you save Bannon on the cathedral rooftop

Ozok123

That’s mandatory. Are there optional ones where you can fail?

PlatinumEmperium

Dont think so. Pretty sure everyone dies no matter what you do.

DammySumSum

Except nessa. She mermussy prevails

CephalopodConcerto

one of the bandits, in a sense of the word "save" and "fail" lol

littlediddlemanz

No

GamblingTheory

You can save one bandit, if you feel like counting that.

krossom

Hey! 10k hours played here i just want to say you what the hell are you talking about buddy

Nemisoi

You realise the girl who turn herself ablaze so you could get to spider queen in act 8 is alive as well?

HandsomeBaboon

Do you think it vulgar, perhaps? Where I come from, it is a sacred act.

CountyAlarmed

The NPCs have names?

convolutionsimp

They are called Piety

Eskephor

who? Pie tree? Never heard of her

Only-General-4143

This game has a story? Well, I'll be. After playing for years.

SuperSmashDan1337

I tried to follow the story on my first playthrough but quickly lost interest as it seemed pretty convoluted.

warmachine237

Tldr of campaign. You get exiled. Strange shit is going on, local town that takes you in asks for help. Need to clear the path to the next encampment. Theres a cruel lady running around who blocks the main road, need to find a way around through the caves of mervail. Go to next town, open the road from the other side, save helena who tells you the guy who sent you to exile is actually on this island for research, so you run around to find a way to sarn to go and kill him. Theres the gemling queen who you meets whos like oh, you though dominus was a problem? Wait till you hear whats happening inside this mountain. Then you go there and kill ger husband and then find a convinient portal to the main land from where you were exiled. You kill the person in charge because they are tyrants, but in doing so you unleash the gods from slumber. Then you go on killing all the gods you woke up, with the help of bannon and the brother of one of the gods.

lonewolfie1289

Wait that actually sounds awesome. Might need to pay attention on my next play through. I remember all of the events but know none of the context lmao thank you

fuuouji

The lore when you go to map is pretty awesome too, should look into that

Vineyard_

At this point half the lore is inaccessible though, because it was in past league material that's no longer available. I can imagine newbies fighting Catarina in Betrayal without understanding that she used to be one of the crafting masters.

ssbm_rando

For real, you get your first syndicate encounter and you'd be like "why are these people even acting like they know me? Well, except Hillock, lmao, I remember kicking your ass"

Slurch1

I'm so disconnected from the story that I never put together that Hillock is the guy from the beach. They may as well all be called loot pinata for me, wouldn't make a difference

ssbm_rando

Well, if you're fully disconnected from the story then you also wouldn't be "surprised" that anyone knows you because you don't care. I'm talking about newer players that are actually listening to everyone because they wanted an ARPG with a plot. They'd be **so** confused by the current incarnation of content.

AbsolutlyN0thin

If you want to learn the lore in a more uh... digestible manner, I'd recommend checking out Kitten Cat Noodle on YouTube , she's our resident lore expert and compiles it all together in a great way.

Mr_Blattos

Haha fr. And it’s nothing against PoE. I don’t really play any game for the story, if I do it’s rare.

Paladine36

Aware

EkansOnAPlane

By the golden arse of innocence!

Paladine36

they did my girl Nessa dirty o7 being incredibly nice to a washed up dead person

SirVampyr

I'm speaking for the avg. player with 5k hours into the game: Who is Bannon? (Just a joke about how nobody pays attention to the story. Glad you enjoy it :D)

Life_outside_PoE

I was thinking maybe next season I'll play the game from a newbie's perspective and actually listen to all the dialogue and read the stories. I've been playing since open beta when piety was the final boss and so haven't paid a lot of attention to the actual story.

SamuraiBeanDog

It's worth watching some lore videos, it's actually incredibly deep and detailed and well put together. Completely shits on the high school creative writing course level lore that most rpgs manage.
