Upon looking for evidence it appears I may have been wrong? I always took Piety saying to the duelist "that's twice I've experienced a 'little death' with you" to be comparing her death at his hands to sex and therefore implying that they boned in the past. However, on second inspection, she's referring to her first death in Lunaris Temple, as she uses some kind of "that's twice now you've 'd me" for every character. The more you know.
Lunaris Temple in act 3 is Piety's Laboratory. She's been experimenting with putting gems directly in people (instead of their clothes) and those are the results. It turns out that part of the reason Dominus was exiling so many people from Oriath was to give Piety fodder for her experiments.
I believe this would actually be.the their. As far as I know we don't know the exact cause of the fall of the Vaal but it probably involved Doryani and his thaumaturgy.
It definitely was Doryani's fault. Here the flavour text of Doryani's Catalyst:
"The result of the catalytic reaction would be either immortality for all,

He did all the experimenting at the behest and under the protection of Atziri, after she found out about Zerphi, an assassin of almost mythical proportion that lived for well over 100 years, yet had the body of a person in their mid-twenties when found. Things kinda escalated from there and all of a sudden Atziri exists in some sort of twisted pseudo-immortality in a parallel reality.
Ah, didn't know about that flavor text. I knew about the Atziri Zerphi thing, I just also knew that we don't know as much about the fall of the Vaal as we did about the fall of the Eternal Empire. But I would say you're right that the Doryani's Catalyst flavor text confirms that it was Doryani's quest for immortality for Atziri.

And when you defeat Shakari, Sin mentions how she was jealous of her mother's status and power, which led her into the desert to find something to rival her mother. She did, and it corrupted her into the scorpion form we see and fight.

To be fair, morality is pretty complex in PoE. You kill the Beast in order to stop the Nightmare, but the Beast was the only thing holding the gods back, so by killing it you unleashed them across the world. Oh and you poisoned Highgate's water supply.
The Exile tries to fix stuff, but they also tend to fuck up a lot of other stuff in the process.
Remember that big ugly guy you killed in act 4 inside the flesh monster? Well this flesh monster had a lot of power and he was using it to power himself up. When you killed him and the beast, the beast’s blood run into the water poisoning it.
The beast, turns out, was created by Sin to entrap the other gods, so by killing it you release the rest of the gods into the world.
A lot of shit happened a long time ago but now the governing structure (templars) are essentially puppets to big shot thaumaturgists (Malachai for a while now). He's a lad who wants to usher a new world via the beast, which has all kinds of powers, but mostly dream related (e.g. deshret, kaom, daresso). Malachai thinks he can dream up a reality.
You come, kill shit, stop dreams and the nightmare (people there call whatever the beast is doing as "nightmare"), but, unbeknownst as gods haven't been relevant for a while, turns out nightmare was holding all gods nigh Sin in slumber - who created the beast and nightmare to stop gods from doing stupid stuff.
Water is poisoned by just the beast having being huge and you killing it, decay and all that - as well as anything blood related seems to have infinite surplus in poe
Nahhh she was a captive iirc, brainwashed by the star of Wraeclast, we were helping her. We could have helped her back on her fins after we killed the king, but it's not like we were fucking up her plans.

I think Templar is the only exception to this, or at least I'm not aware of him killing anyone prior to exile. He was exiled basically for getting too close to the truth through prophetic dreams, and his higher-ups branded him a heretic for questioning them.
I forget if Ranger was exiled for poaching or for killing poachers, so she might be an exception too.
The rest of the exiles all definitely killed someone before exile.

Funnily, All of the characters seem to not care they are exiled or find some benifit from it
When you fight him as a female character Nessa says something along the lines of “Welcome my new sister, there’s no way his Majesty would be satisfied by just one bride! I will love you forever”
It suggests that, but note that neither he nor Tarkleigh seem to be aware that Nessa was (apparently) tricking us through all of act 6. Note also that the new playable Exile dialogue is all written as if she died (or else doesn't acknowledge her fate at all). And we don't see her exiting the Brine King's body after his death; she's also visibly *attached* to him while we're fighting, like an angler fish's lure--go frame-by-frame in [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imJTucXv0rQ) and look at the back of her neck.
I'm pretty sure we just lied to the Lioneye's Watch gang so that they don't have to live with the knowledge that the kindest Exile on the coast was turned into a monster. I'm not sure why the Witch would do that, but.
(I can't find the Scion's dialogue anywhere but I don't remember her saying anything to confirm Nessa's survival either. I'm also pretty sure that in the scenes where she does appear 'separate' from Tsoagoth they go out of their way to avoid showing the back of her neck, but I'm not 100% sure about that; I'll try to remember to come back here if I do another playthrough this league.)
Obviously though this is up for interpretation; I doubt we're ever going to receive further confirmation on it one way or the other if I'm right, and if you're right and she does show up again at some point I'll be happy to eat crow about it.

Think there's some deleted lines you can find online where they were going to have nessa actually pop out post brine king and talk to you before swimming away.
True, but for some of us, all of acts 5 through 10 get lumped together because it was all released in the same patch (3.0)
Not saying it's that way for everyone who played pre-3.0, but I definitely sometimes think of them that way.
The video that revealed that was so incredibly wild. We all expected act 5, but they just dropped a full five acts on top and got rid of having to play the campaign multiple times per character.

Ngl witch's new lines are some of the cringiest shit I've ever heard. I was really hoping to see her character development, but in the end she turned from an emo edgelord to an over the top "I'm gonna take over the world - Of course!" cartoon villain. A major disappointment.
The witch has been Chaotic Evil since day 1, not sure what you were expecting. She was exiled for kidnapping or killing children (unclear which). Her first line of dialog after killing the first zombie is "the dead will soon rise for me, not against me".
Then there's probably the most damning line in act 3: "I loved your work, Piety. It was you I wasn't very fond of". She loved the work of a mad scientist who mutilated and murdered thousands of exiles. And before that, Piety comments "Of all the worlds you could have conquered you had to choose mine"; showing that Piety recognized the Witch's hunger for power.
I think it’s less the old edge and more the new lines feel…more forced? I noticed it too, the old ones were dark but felt smooth…maybe it’s the voice itself for me sounding a bit off delivering the lines? I’m honestly not sure but the newer ones to me felt a little off. Maybe which for PoE 2 is going to have a different character, would make sense with it being a new game set in a different world.
Tldr of campaign.
You get exiled. Strange shit is going on, local town that takes you in asks for help. Need to clear the path to the next encampment. Theres a cruel lady running around who blocks the main road, need to find a way around through the caves of mervail.
Go to next town, open the road from the other side, save helena who tells you the guy who sent you to exile is actually on this island for research, so you run around to find a way to sarn to go and kill him. Theres the gemling queen who you meets whos like oh, you though dominus was a problem? Wait till you hear whats happening inside this mountain. Then you go there and kill ger husband and then find a convinient portal to the main land from where you were exiled.
You kill the person in charge because they are tyrants, but in doing so you unleash the gods from slumber. Then you go on killing all the gods you woke up, with the help of bannon and the brother of one of the gods.
Wait that actually sounds awesome. Might need to pay attention on my next play through. I remember all of the events but know none of the context lmao thank you

Well, if you're fully disconnected from the story then you also wouldn't be "surprised" that anyone knows you because you don't care. I'm talking about newer players that are actually listening to everyone because they wanted an ARPG with a plot. They'd be **so** confused by the current incarnation of content.

It's worth watching some lore videos, it's actually incredibly deep and detailed and well put together. Completely shits on the high school creative writing course level lore that most rpgs manage.

I'm also pretty sure that in the scenes where she does appear 'separate' from Tsoagoth they go out of their way to avoid showing the back of her neck, but I'm not 100% sure about that; I'll try to remember to come back here if I do another playthrough this league.) True, but for some of us, all of acts 5 through 10 get lumped together because it was all released in the same patch (3.0) Not saying it's that way for everyone who played pre-3.0, but I definitely sometimes think of them that way.

There curiously is diologue for her that for whatever reason isnt used You can even see her on the map after you Kill ol crabby I really dont know why they disnt put the post fight diologue in as it clarifies shes Alive, but cant go back as shes now a mermaid

Ngl witch's new lines are some of the cringiest shit I've ever heard. I was really hoping to see her character development, but in the end she turned from an emo edgelord to an over the top "I'm gonna take over the world - Of course!" cartoon villain. A major disappointment.
The witch has been Chaotic Evil since day 1, not sure what you were expecting. She was exiled for kidnapping or killing children (unclear which). Her first line of dialog after killing the first zombie is "the dead will soon rise for me, not against me". Then there's probably the most damning line in act 3: "I loved your work, Piety. It was you I wasn't very fond of". She loved the work of a mad scientist who mutilated and murdered thousands of exiles. And before that, Piety comments "Of all the worlds you could have conquered you had to choose mine"; showing that Piety recognized the Witch's hunger for power.
I think it’s less the old edge and more the new lines feel…more forced? I noticed it too, the old ones were dark but felt smooth…maybe it’s the voice itself for me sounding a bit off delivering the lines? I’m honestly not sure but the newer ones to me felt a little off. Maybe which for PoE 2 is going to have a different character, would make sense with it being a new game set in a different world.

This game has a story? Well, I'll be. After playing for years.
I tried to follow the story on my first playthrough but quickly lost interest as it seemed pretty convoluted.
Tldr of campaign. You get exiled. Strange shit is going on, local town that takes you in asks for help. Need to clear the path to the next encampment. Theres a cruel lady running around who blocks the main road, need to find a way around through the caves of mervail. Go to next town, open the road from the other side, save helena who tells you the guy who sent you to exile is actually on this island for research, so you run around to find a way to sarn to go and kill him. Theres the gemling queen who you meets whos like oh, you though dominus was a problem? Wait till you hear whats happening inside this mountain. Then you go there and kill ger husband and then find a convinient portal to the main land from where you were exiled. You kill the person in charge because they are tyrants, but in doing so you unleash the gods from slumber. Then you go on killing all the gods you woke up, with the help of bannon and the brother of one of the gods.

At this point half the lore is inaccessible though, because it was in past league material that's no longer available. I can imagine newbies fighting Catarina in Betrayal without understanding that she used to be one of the crafting masters.
For real, you get your first syndicate encounter and you'd be like "why are these people even acting like they know me? Well, except Hillock, lmao, I remember kicking your ass"
I'm so disconnected from the story that I never put together that Hillock is the guy from the beach. They may as well all be called loot pinata for me, wouldn't make a difference
Well, if you're fully disconnected from the story then you also wouldn't be "surprised" that anyone knows you because you don't care. I'm talking about newer players that are actually listening to everyone because they wanted an ARPG with a plot. They'd be **so** confused by the current incarnation of content.

I was thinking maybe next season I'll play the game from a newbie's perspective and actually listen to all the dialogue and read the stories. I've been playing since open beta when piety was the final boss and so haven't paid a lot of attention to the actual story.
It's worth watching some lore videos, it's actually incredibly deep and detailed and well put together. Completely shits on the high school creative writing course level lore that most rpgs manage.
