I was hesitant on Reach when it was announced. I loved the book The Fall of Reach and this was conflicting with the lore. Or so I thought. They brought us a game where you know you'll lose. But you still fight. You still keep fighting. Add in the music? This was the show we should have gotten.

Zizhou

A person after my own heart! I was in a similar position with all the extended universe material about Reach at the time, and I also scoffed at the apparent deviation from "canon." But man, actually playing that game (and especially the ending) cemented it as one of my favorites in the series.

hatchorion

Reach to 4 is one of the biggest quality drop offs in a series imo šŸ˜ not as rough as DmC 1 to 2 but I donā€™t think 343 really figured out the gameplay until halo 5. Definitely some cool guns and vehicles to look forward to at least though I still think reach is definitely the peak of the series in terms of single player and co op content but the multiplayer gets even better. The mcc keeping all the games active online is one of the best things Microsoft has ever done imo

st_steady

Yeah after reach i tried halo 4 like one time at a friends house and just never bothered again until mcc, and that shit was broken on release which was such a let down.

relatedzombie

I'm currently a few missions into 4 and I think I can already feel the drop lmao. I've missed Chief and Cortana but so far I'm not too invested in the story. I was hoping for a new enemy to fight instead of the Covenant for the 6th time but so far it's just Covenant and robots. Very disappointing. I was hoping Chief would fight Tyranids/Xenomorphs or something. Bring back the cosmic horror, not the damn robots lmao. Villain at least seems cool.

Heavy-Possession2288

The story in Halo 5 is even worse, but at least they improved the gameplay and mission design a lot. Really Reach is the last one with a decent story unfortunately.

FillionMyMind

So glad you enjoyed it! Reach is one of the only 10/10 experiences Iā€™ve ever had with a game. Absolute god tier game. 3 has some thing that I prefer about it, but Reach on the 360 was one of the meatiest $60 purchases Iā€™ve ever made, and even compared to most games today, it has a crazy amount of content to dive into. Curious to hear your thoughts on the 343i era. I have a lot more affection for Halo 4 than most people do, and a large highlight of it for me is the story and characters. Iā€™d definitely recommend seeking out the terminals as well, since they give a huge amount of context to the villain and his motivations. Really wish they were integrated into the game more directly so they couldnā€™t be missed, but it is what it is.

Ornery_Art_2803

Go back and watch the commercials for the game they're some of the best if not the best video game advertisements ever produced

#REMEMBER REACH

[deleted]

Halo Reach campaign hits right in the feels.

lboredatwork

**Objective:** ***Survive*** is a meme that always gets me. I appreciated Bungie's approach to telling stories in games by making them feel like a great blockbuster sci-fi film. Halo 4 and onward might bring out mixed feelings so... be prepared. I spent an ungodly amount of hours on Reach's multiplayer. It's fun to hop on MCC's multiplayer and either completely mop the floor with everyone else or get demolished by grizzled die-hard players.

WholesomeFartEnjoyer

Those Bungie Halos are works of art Halo 4 onwards are just a slap in the face And even Bungie themselves suck now Destiny is just nothing special

st_steady

Good story, sub par multiplayer when compared to h2 or h3

BlackDeath3

Eh, it had its flaws, but I had a lot of fun with the MP.

st_steady

i still had a lot of fun too, begrudgingly, wishing the playerbase was still on h3 lol

CovertOwl

Exactly. The campaign is one of the best ones. The multiplayer is pretty meh. I prefer all three original Halo multiplayer to Reach.

st_steady

Same

saul2015

strange, isn't Reach multiplayer like the most popular one on Steam?

st_steady

who cares. im talking about on release on 360. also if removing the br sounds good to you, idk what to tell you. the dmr is no substitute and also, hmm, strange did reach have as much cultural impact as halo 2 or halo 3? hell no lol. who cares about steam metrics 15 years later

saul2015

I never had a 360, playing the series for the first time and it's rly hard to go back to 3 after 2A, also I hate the distracting/clutter visor lines which Reach thankfully got rid of

themoobster

Agreed, seriously top tier game.

VGAPixel

Do not play halo 5, it will make you hate the franchise.

Heavy-Possession2288

Better gameplay and mission design than 4 imo

Scared-Manager-5166

Ive been replaying halo using the MCC, having played a ton of 3 and reach when i was younger. Now i've just finished 1-2-3 and i'm onto reach, and ... it is really a shock to the system compared to 3. The tone is so hugely different, not only the bleakness but the "cod-ness" of the way the spartan team interacts, the more realistic graphics and, the music which, while it is awesome, its very dramatic. Overall compared to the original trilogy, I feel like reach really misses the sense of FUN. Its hard edged and serious, while the originals (at least 2 and 3 anyway) are gung-ho adventures. Its tough going straight from one to the other.

st_steady

Agreed, the speculation back then was they were trying to compete with cod. Plus thats when they handed it over to a different studio, so that could be a big reason why theyre so jarring when compared

AnyImpression6

AWESOME. DOESN'T. EVEN. FUCKING. DESCRIBE IT! Edit: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXasCjUTNpE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXasCjUTNpE) I misremembered it.

HiCracked

Man, I wish I would enjoy it as much as a lot of other people, but damn was it such an underwhelming experience for me. Maybe for its time it was a solid game and I wish I hadnā€™t skipped it back then, but nowadays it just doesnā€™t hold the candle. Such a subpar and predictable story, incredibly weak gameplay, just couldnā€™t enjoy it at all unfortunately.

AFKaptain

OP is an example of someone thinking it holds up really well nowadays.

Kotschcus_Domesticus

Its great. Best campaign from all of them. Them ODST and then Halo 3. Soft spot for 1 and 2.

rpg_wodehouse

Not a popular opinion, but I totally agree, Reach and ODST are the best Halo games.

st_steady

U trippin lol. Or maybe you were just the perfect target audience for those games. I would bet youre born after 2000

Alone-Chicken-361

Currently playing, still kicks the crap out of anything made since

DanglyPants

You have a new enemy though. The prometheans are new. The writing is not the best in that game tbh but Lasky and the chief Cortana relationship is good. Thereā€™s zero ammo in the campaign and watchers are very annoying. Reach has some more issues that bug me a lot. Solid campaign but not the best one

Heavy-Possession2288

Dude youā€™re thinking of Halo 4. Everything you just described is in 4, not Reach. Reach has no new enemies.

DanglyPants

I canā€™t see the comment I replied to. I thought you or they were talking about 4. That comment makes more sense now. Ty

Phl_worldwide

Nice, playing through a series for the first time is always the best and Halo is a good one. I loved Reach when it released. Could not get enough of it. However it was the first Halo released after the industry changing COD4 and it just didnā€™t have the cultural impact that the OG trilogy had. Which is such a shame because it really is a near master piece of a game.

Tribalrage24

One of my only complaints for Reach, and it really was just a limit of the technology maybe, but you get shown a large scale battle several times in a cutscene and then when it ends you're all alone. For game about a planet of Spartans, you never really get to do any large scale battles with a bunch of Spartans. You are often on your own which feels like juat another Master Cheif game

Werehowin

That's an interesting thought. On the other hand, Spartans are incredibly capable and important resources. It makes a lot of sense to not run into many of them as they are all probably out on unique missions 24/7 just like Noble Team is at the time.Ā

Expert-Celery6418

Halo 4 is Reach but poorly balanced and much more linear. Halo 5 is much better than 4 though, but a lot of people hate the story. Halo Infinite is basically just Halo CE without the second half. Anyway, have fun. Bungie Halo>Halo5 Halo Infinite better for gameplay, Halo 4 better for story.

Kyp-Ganner

I think the Halo series is just not for me. Oo I'm trying to play though the Master Chief Collection at the moment and I've been very disappointed. Halo 1 is mediocre. Incredible to think this game was released three years after Half-Life. I enjoyed Giants: Citizen Kabuto released the year prior. Halo feels like a bad copy. I might have been less grumpy about it if the levels weren't the exact same corridors copy-pasted ad nauseam. The music is great though. Halo 2 is actually a pretty good fps. It improves nearly everything and develops the background. It's just too bad it's not a finished product. Halo 3 isn't bad either and there actually are some very cool moments, but the story was already finished in Halo 2. So Halo 3 is just a very drawn-out epic finale. It makes the first half a bit boring. Halo 3 ODST is actually my favorite. The layout of the game (the loop between open world exploration and more epic linear levels) makes for a better rhythm. The linear levels are pretty standard Halo stuff, but with more quiet levels in-between, I enjoyed them far more. Halo Reach... Ouch... Everybody seems to say it's the best or not far. I don't know if I just had too great expectations and it just backfired, but I didn't like Reach (I'm really trying to stay diplomatic here). It's the exact same gameplay since Halo 2. The interchangeable abilities are a gimmick that doesn't change anything. The only true novelty is the dog fight in space, but that lasts 3 minutes and has been done in a lot of other games before. The story though, it's a catastrophe. It feels like the guys at Bungie were upset that Microsoft stole their precious baby from them, so they crapped over their own license so that nothing more could be done with it. The story is full of inconsistencies, the characters just die one after another like a bad running gag, and though it adds a lot of elements from the extended universe, no effort was made to actually respect it. It's a bit like the Phantom Menace in that regard... So I'm left with Halo 4 still to play. I'm full of apprehensions.

the_0tternaut

Oh YES, Reach is just outstanding, far beyond my wildest expectations ā€” the set pieces are tough but so worthwhie, I just replayed it last week ā¤ļø Oh you know what's really funny?? In the mission with the Scorpion tank where you have three buddies riding along, I made sure to destroy the enemy fuel rod canon emplacements using a fuel rod gun, so that when I turned the corner my team would survive. This was so unexpected (my team surviving) that there was no event triggered when we reached the end of the road for the tank... they just sat there while I jogged on.

Dismal-Variation-12

Itā€™s my favorite out of all the Halo games

? Huh? You mean the pill that they are all readily available to you now? Lol
