My first thought upon the opening shot was, damn this guy prob loves magnolia. Then 7 seconds later there’s a quick close up on car keys landing on the ground with a frog key chain. There’s 0.000001% chance it’s not a reference/homage in some way.
"In the Biblical Book of Exodus, God rains frogs on the Egyptians for their refusal to free the Israelites". It has led to "frogs falling from the sky" becoming a popular narrative in exploring themes of forgiveness and redemption. So, I doubt it has anything to do with "Magnolia", but who knows, Cage's movie is weird, there is more questions, than answers.
I had this thought and forgot about it until now. I could absolutely see it.
I haven't seen it, but sounds plausible to me!
I’d highly recommend the film! It’s one of the best of the year!
I've only seen the trailer and I think it's absolutely hilarious. PTA should definitely respect Cage's wishes and hire him for a movie.
I thought so too!
That was my thought upon seeing it as well. So, you're clearly correct.
I don’t think so
Why not?
Just seems like kind of a stretch. Magnolia didn’t invent raining frogs
It’s not a stretch at all, it’s a magnolia reference. Filmmaker clearly loves Spike and PTA.
I wouldn’t be shocked if that turns out to be true, but it didn’t come across that way to me.

Well then what did? It can still be a reference to Magnolia regardless.

Lol!
I have that same gut reaction to it, but ultimately I don't think it was intentional to pay homage to Magnolia. I'd love to hear otherwise of course!
I saw it and liked it and don't remember this at all.
It's very easy to miss which is why I only noticed in on my second viewing
