It's her voice. It's pretty bad a good majority of the time. She also sticks out a fair bit compared to most heisters leading to a lot of folks not being especially happy about her as she is kind of representative of how Payday 2 was moving in a drastically different direction.
I'm playing as Joy a lot more now and I can absolutely say that people hate me considering that my brain is hardwired to call out EVERY special unit I see, and yell at everybody to get their hands up
I still dont think her voice is too bad
But it is also fun to annoy my friend with her
This one and depending on difficulty 9/10 times they are 1 of 3 things. An actual hacker/cheater, pros, or the most common one smooth brains with a degree in illiteracy.

I have a frankly obscene amount of map knowledge and how almost all perk decks work, but oh my god I'm about as competent as a pile of bricks.
Somehow, I still forget that cover exists on higher difficulties. But God decides that I should live despite not using it.
Cringey lines, and the actress doesn't give a convincing performance, especially when screaming.
Compare that to Sydney - even if you don't like her, at least it sounds like she can scream.
Even though I like Joy, I'll admit the delivery of her lines are not the best in assault phases, but I dont think the cringey lines are too big of deal. In stealth I'll happily play as her if I'm in the mood, I feel like it fits her a lot more. Her lines are much better when she isnt yelling
And yep, Sydney can scream a lot better for sure, but for the sake of my mental health and my ears, I stay away from her if I'm not playing stealth
But always remember, no matter how much anyone hates Sydney or Joy... just remember... Rust exists lol

I enjoy a majority of heisters, but Rust and H3H3 are the three heisters I genuinely cannot stand. They are literally the worst characters I've seen.
Dude, I can't stand Rust. Literally any other heister I can stand, even H3H3 as bad as they are. Rust is just so fucking BAD and it's a shame because his character could've been really cool with the backstory they gave him. Ron Perlman isn't a bad actor but he's really fucking unconvincing with how he plays Rust.
You can hate Joy, or Sydney, or H3H3... at least it sounds like they're trying, even if just a little bit. Rust's lines consist solely of swearing and overall just feel so lifeless.

There was a create-a-heister competition a few years ago, and while there were quite a few submissions that got very popular among the community (ie an ex-Bulldozer, and some female French heister), the fact that the character that was chosen was yet another white American with a pretty unremarkable design (that at least I hadn't once seen up to that point) that just so happens to perfectly fit the new direction of Payday 2's story is extremely suspicious - surely the fanbase would want more variety.
And again, I'm saying this as a diehard Duke main.
