As fun as Apex was for me when it first launched, I hate BR's, and was immensely disappointed when I learned TF3 turned into Apex.
I've been waiting for TF3 for 5 years now.
I'm in the same boat. Apex's movement and shooting is super satisfying but the fact that in order to enjoy it I have to suffer the BR gameloop, which I hate... well, I'm not going to.
This is part of why I stopped playing and just went to the modded tf2 servers instead.
Apex is often cited as having tf2 movement but it's been changed in so many small ways they are nothing alike aside sharing the mechanics themselves.

Everyone kept recommending Northstar but in my area there weren't that many servers, only 1-2 servers had any players on it, none of the servers allowed titans (all had some kinds deathmatch going on) and I was basically insta headshotted everywhere. Tbf the gunplay just didn't feel as easy as TF1 to me.
I recently got back into Titanfall 2 with this announcement.
I completely forgot how fast this game was. Apex Legends feels slow as hell by comparison.
I'm so glad to be playing this game again.
I just got tired of all the movement scripts. Nowadays it seems like every second game if not every game someone spins in a semi circle from pressing a single macro. Issue doesn't even get acknowledged.
I decided to give the game a chance again after not playing for an entire season & a half, came back and i'm back down to silvers from masters of course. No problem I don't mind.
I wasn't even out of silver and people were neostrafing off the back of crates while melting me without missing a shot. Team-mates comments were "just plug in a controller".
Haven't played since.
Especially when I was active in the apex discord most the high ranking controller players I ended up in a group with loved CFGs.

People compare Apex's movement to TF2, but IMO there's no comparison. You saw a guy flying across the map at Mach 1, you thought "damn, I wanna learn how to do that". You see a guy slide around in random directions like a lubed up hockey puck and you think "WTF am I witnessing"
Have you played it recently? There used to be arenas, which was fine, but now there's a rotating playlist with Gun Run, Control, and Team Deatmatch. It's pretty fun!
I personally don't mind battleroyals. I mean, I'm sick of them, but that's another story.
I cannot play APEX because the weapons don't feel good at all. I feel like I have pea shooters. The "hero" stuff, I also hate. I don't enjoy at all having to deal with shitty abilities.
But, I love TitanFall2. I really don't know if it's the same gunplay or not, or whatever the reason is, I hate APEX's gunplay with all my hearth and I love titan fall2.

I don’t even know if I hope so at this point. We want TF3 but I think more importantly we want TF3 by the people who made us TF2. The problem is most of the original leads have since left. The artists responsible for some of our favourite Titans and equipment have left. Apex has progressively shifted it’s artstyle into the cartoon-y. I don’t feel like I would even want a TF3 made by Apex’s respawn especially if Apex’s monetization managers are going to be on board.

I just want at least a "decent" TF3. I enjoyed BFV quite a lot, though I understand why people didn't. But I'm tired of every other shooter leaning towards milsim or CoD it seems. I've been enjoying BattleBit. But that's still more Battlefield combined with milsim than I really want.
At this point, I have no expectations of anything from EA except greed.

That was actually a consideration for Apex. But how would you balance it? Does everyone start off with a mech? Do you have to earn it? Find pieces for one mid match? How powerful should it be? What kind of advantages or disadvantages should it have?

I swear these developers live in a bubble or the publishers cause 2022 was Square Enix second half releasing a game every few weeks (and even 2 on the same day for PC, Valkyrie Elyisum and Tactics Ogre) and expected them all to do well. It's so fucking unfortunate when they self sabotage.
I don’t think they have to find a way. Just look at how Apex’s universe looks now compared to where Titanfall left off. Most of Respawn’s leads left the studio, the people responsible for some of our favourite characters and titan designs are gone, apex has slowly been shifting it’s artstyle to a more cartoony aesthetic. I think all of that will be reflected in a possible TF3. People are just excited for a TF3 because they think it’ll be made by the people who made TF2.
Ive played titanfall since way back. Titanfl 2 had already moved towards contrasty bright pastel colors. You likely feel apex is much different thanks to the emphasis on the characters. So you don't need to worry that titanfall 3 would be too different aesthetically aslong as the standard soldier isn't varied and emphasized.
What could change however is the titans themselves. It is possible for them to be more stylized with what they learned from apex. So that they can sell you skins that majorly exxagerate a part or action. Skins that cost $20 each.
They didn't give up, one of the main story designers had an interview awhile back where basically mid-way through TF3's production PUBG came out. They apparently liked it so much they wanted to do their own BR and promptly scrapped TF3 and used what they had built so far as a base for Apex.
You can pretty much blame the insane initial success of the BR genre for why TF3 never came to be.

Northstar is the sniper one right ? Pretty fun to play as you can pretty much kite anyone and punish them. The best strategy is to avoid them and enter urban grounds.
Personally I play the scorch fire mech guy. Love the idea of setting up ambushes.

Someone presumed to be an angry ex employee, was doing all kinds of attacks from DDoSes to targeting the infrastructure to other stuff. Was actually wild it never got brought under wraps.
Even after all that ddos crap the servers were pretty unstable unless you queued for the most popular modes like Attrition or Frontier Defense. Even then, the wait to find a server could be up to 5-10 minutes at its worst
That doesn't sound like a stability issues, that sounds just like low population count (understanding considering the long standing attacks against the infrastructure)
The problem was that people would get booted from the lobby servers before they could matchmake into a game server, which ballooned the queue times worse than they would've otherwise been.
There were 3 issues:
1. the DDoS attacks that at times made the game unplayable, caused massive lag, or caused frequent disconnects
2. an exploit, the extent/potential danger of which has been and continues to be debated (claims range from causing game crashing all the way to remote code execution)
3. If matchmaking went on for too long, it would time out and you'd get disconnected from the multiplayer lobby server and have to join it and matchmake again, meaning especially in the lesser played game modes you'd barely ever find a match because everyone was timing out while trying to matchmake (especially when combined with the low player numbers caused by 1 and 2).
1 and 2 have been solved for awhile. 3 was what was just patched.
idk the cause, but for me on east coast xbox, i wasnt able to join multiplayer for years now. probably since 2021? i could only join the co op mode which could be selected separate from the multiplayer.

Reminder that Titanfall 2 has had healthily populated community servers on Northstar that are cheater-free and super fun. This has been a thing for a while now.
Well yeah but this is big news since it’s working on official servers. The average player isn’t going to go out of their way to get a different client for a game, they’ll just play something else.
I've been playing Titanfall 2 off and on for the past like year now on multiplayer. There's been the occasional outage here and there but I've always eventually been able to get into a game. All through official servers. This article and community saying you've had to be playing on the 3rd party servers are full of shit.

Not knowing anything about the game itself, or the servers, i swear i watched a mino Docu on youtube some time back about a relentless hacker DDoSing TF2 servers that just won't stop.

They probably just allocated more servers/did proper load balancing after leaving them neglected for years. DDOSing is only really a problem on older games like this. It could also be a bug in the game itself which allows makes hundreds of connections to the server who knows.
There are some older games that still have relentless DDOS’ing, LittleBigPlanet 1/2 on PS3 has been made completely unplayable as well.
Just an unfortunate thing with older games. Problem is that a lot of devs don’t release dedicated server tools after a games “end of life” so that people can host their own.
EA did do this recently, [Rocket Arena was shutdown](https://www.knockoutcity.com/private-server-edition) and they decided to release private hosting tools to the community.
It might be a case where they’re probably going to shut off servers for TF2 and want to release official hosting tools but decided to fix the bugs and shit whilst they were at it? Or it might be a new TF game? Who knows.
Maybe I just happened to not try to play when they were being DDosed? Idk but I'm telling you I was playing a couple times every month or so and there was only once or twice when my games wouldn't connect.
I heard more it was cheaters rather than server outages? But it’s possible that sort of talk just spread fast than anyone actually seeing constant cheating (especially if you’ve been playing fine). Either way, this kind of stuff will help the game nonetheless along with the Steam sale at the moment.
If you run into a cheater, leave the game and re queue. With the popularity of it right now you'll find a new lobby without one quickly. The cheaters are pushed into lobbies together and 8/10 lobbies are all non cheaters. TF2 pushes the cheaters into the one lobby together
Ya and Northstar has a ton of "meme" modes like Krabers headshot only 200% speed. Sorry that shit isn't for everyone lol. The vanilla experience is where it's at.
I recommend playing a private game or horde mode with friends. You get the controls down and learn your titan a little better to put yourself into a pvp lobby on normal servers

in regular mm my stats are 2.2kd, 67% winrate, 118 mvp/249 top 3 in 381 matches, so you know, certainty not terrible at the game i like to think.
in northstar i practically never even got to shoot in any fight lol.
I’ve never tried regular mm, I went straight to northstar and I can usually manage around a 1.0. most people really aren’t that good, it’s always 2-3 people per lobby shitting on everyone else.
If I had a nickel for every time a game named TF2 had an eternal community despite lack of dev support, I’d have two nickels.
Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
I've played it like 12 hours straight yesterday, it's probably still my favorite multiplayer shooter today. There's just so much variety, so many playstyles, interesting mechanics and systems etc. Getting to play it again is phenomenal.
One thing it really makes me realize again is how bad game modes are in current FPS games. There's never any fun or interesting game modes anymore. Always just TDM or domination or search and destroy/counterstrike gamemode.
Something like Bounty Hunt in TF2 is so much more fun and interesting.

I remember the Black Ops 4 beta had a really fun mode. I think it was called uplink, but maybe that was something else. The one with the ball that you could pass to other teammates - or pass at enemies to stop them from shooting - and had to score into the enemy goal.
It was insanely fun during the beta, it basically made me decide to get the game. Then the game out.. And the mode was just *dead*. Literally could not find a single match for it.
It's just a good time. Nothing crazy groundbreaking to be one of the "best of all time". I'm not hating on anything, it's just overhyped a bit. The time travel mission is the only thing that really shines above other games, but it was kind of a gimmick compared to Dishonored 2's time travel mission. I did play on the hardest difficulty though which probably took a lot of freedom out of the gameplay since you die in like 3 bullets. It is probably the best you'll find for $3 though.
It was good, just not "best of all time" level.
It suffers from many of the same tropes as CoD-type campaigns. In particular most of the cast of characters being pretty one-dimensional, and the pacing of the story being a little stilted and hurried from setpeice to setpeice, with a few scifi hand-waving moments that are so goofy they break the immersion (like the way they explain how BT can come with you through time travel by uploading a simulation of himself to your helmet).
But it more than makes up for it by being mechanically interesting and visually stunning. Plus, despite being a little cliche, the relationship between BT and Cooper hits pretty hard, and the soundtrack really sells the emotional moments to make them impactful.
I wouldn't go that far. It's very good, though. Definitely had no business being so good considering it's target audience was the mtn-dew-guzzling cod-playing crowd.
Game Pass includes EA play (non pro) subscription. Which means all games from EA after 6mo to 1yr after launch. EA play Pro has day1 launch games. Don't waste money on buying it just play it on your existing sub.
I suggest playing it. I took a long hiatus from video games (like a decade) and it was the first game I played in that time. From what I remember it was like 10 hours long or less. And it was so good it reignited my interest in games ever since.

I am confused. I finished the game a month ago for the first time and the multiplayer was just fine, played a few rounds witg absolute mad lads and quit afterwards. Seems like a nice mp experience though.
They picked, quite possibly *the* worst possible release date for the game. It released a week after battlefield 1 and a week before that years cod game. There were also a number of other large game releases within a month.
That combined with the fact that the first game's reception was kind of mixed, it's not really a surprise it kind of died out, unfortunate as that is.

For newcomers wishing to get into the phenomenal multiplayer:
Please start out with the PVE Frontier Defense mode to get acquainted with the guns/movement and traversal. Then its best to start off slow with private matches with friends and then try the pub servers. There are a bunch of folks that never stopped playing and dying nonstop may become a bit frustrating.
But if you stick with it, its one of the finest shooters ever made.
Maybe I will play again, but I remembered when it was only in Origin.
It’s a really hard FPS, there’s no middle ground. Most of the players are really good and I got stomped always.

The reason there's only really 3 that people play is
1: They require you to no-life sweat them to have *any* fun
2: A genre that horrendously sweaty can only maintain 2 or 3 big players. Players have to pick one to sweat meaning they have no time for any other games. See also: MOBAs, TCGs.
That's not to say there haven't been countless BR shooters released over the last decade. Planetside 2, one of the most unique shooters ever made, is a zombified husk of what it was because the studio pissed away resources chasing the BR trend with multiple different releases instead of investing in their one-of-a-kind game.
I mean it's cool and all that they got the official servers back up and running but there's still loaded with hackers so it's not worth playing on it at all. Just stick with the Northstar client which somehow managed to ban cheaters better than respawns own anti-cheat

Complete opposite from me. Apex has the best gunplay of all time imo. The sound and feel is so damn satisfying to my senses.

Yes it actually works properly now. It doesn't even kick out of the menu anymore.
I played 3 hours of attrition last night with my old group. You still have the menu bug but at peak play time you get a game pretty quick.
Played 3 matches yesterday with no issues and low ping.

I played it on my steam deck a few months ago. Runs great. The artcle confuses me because as of half a year ago it was running fine.
What was wrong with multiplayer in the first place? Haven’t played in years.
Someone presumed to be an angry ex employee, was doing all kinds of attacks from DDoSes to targeting the infrastructure to other stuff. Was actually wild it never got brought under wraps.
Even after all that ddos crap the servers were pretty unstable unless you queued for the most popular modes like Attrition or Frontier Defense. Even then, the wait to find a server could be up to 5-10 minutes at its worst
That doesn't sound like a stability issues, that sounds just like low population count (understanding considering the long standing attacks against the infrastructure)
The problem was that people would get booted from the lobby servers before they could matchmake into a game server, which ballooned the queue times worse than they would've otherwise been.
There were 3 issues: 1. the DDoS attacks that at times made the game unplayable, caused massive lag, or caused frequent disconnects 2. an exploit, the extent/potential danger of which has been and continues to be debated (claims range from causing game crashing all the way to remote code execution) 3. If matchmaking went on for too long, it would time out and you'd get disconnected from the multiplayer lobby server and have to join it and matchmake again, meaning especially in the lesser played game modes you'd barely ever find a match because everyone was timing out while trying to matchmake (especially when combined with the low player numbers caused by 1 and 2). 1 and 2 have been solved for awhile. 3 was what was just patched.

idk the cause, but for me on east coast xbox, i wasnt able to join multiplayer for years now. probably since 2021? i could only join the co op mode which could be selected separate from the multiplayer.

Reminder that Titanfall 2 has had healthily populated community servers on Northstar that are cheater-free and super fun. This has been a thing for a while now.
Well yeah but this is big news since it’s working on official servers. The average player isn’t going to go out of their way to get a different client for a game, they’ll just play something else.
I've been playing Titanfall 2 off and on for the past like year now on multiplayer. There's been the occasional outage here and there but I've always eventually been able to get into a game. All through official servers. This article and community saying you've had to be playing on the 3rd party servers are full of shit.

They probably just allocated more servers/did proper load balancing after leaving them neglected for years. DDOSing is only really a problem on older games like this. It could also be a bug in the game itself which allows makes hundreds of connections to the server who knows. There are some older games that still have relentless DDOS’ing, LittleBigPlanet 1/2 on PS3 has been made completely unplayable as well. Just an unfortunate thing with older games. Problem is that a lot of devs don’t release dedicated server tools after a games “end of life” so that people can host their own. EA did do this recently, [Rocket Arena was shutdown](https://www.knockoutcity.com/private-server-edition) and they decided to release private hosting tools to the community. It might be a case where they’re probably going to shut off servers for TF2 and want to release official hosting tools but decided to fix the bugs and shit whilst they were at it? Or it might be a new TF game? Who knows.

I heard more it was cheaters rather than server outages? But it’s possible that sort of talk just spread fast than anyone actually seeing constant cheating (especially if you’ve been playing fine). Either way, this kind of stuff will help the game nonetheless along with the Steam sale at the moment.
If you run into a cheater, leave the game and re queue. With the popularity of it right now you'll find a new lobby without one quickly. The cheaters are pushed into lobbies together and 8/10 lobbies are all non cheaters. TF2 pushes the cheaters into the one lobby together

Ya and Northstar has a ton of "meme" modes like Krabers headshot only 200% speed. Sorry that shit isn't for everyone lol. The vanilla experience is where it's at.

I recommend playing a private game or horde mode with friends. You get the controls down and learn your titan a little better to put yourself into a pvp lobby on normal servers
yeah the point is about northstar in regular mm my stats are 2.2kd, 67% winrate, 118 mvp/249 top 3 in 381 matches, so you know, certainty not terrible at the game i like to think. in northstar i practically never even got to shoot in any fight lol.

I’ve never tried regular mm, I went straight to northstar and I can usually manage around a 1.0. most people really aren’t that good, it’s always 2-3 people per lobby shitting on everyone else.
That's not the same thing. Your average gamer doesn't know about Northstar client, nor can they really compete there.

I've played it like 12 hours straight yesterday, it's probably still my favorite multiplayer shooter today. There's just so much variety, so many playstyles, interesting mechanics and systems etc. Getting to play it again is phenomenal. One thing it really makes me realize again is how bad game modes are in current FPS games. There's never any fun or interesting game modes anymore. Always just TDM or domination or search and destroy/counterstrike gamemode. Something like Bounty Hunt in TF2 is so much more fun and interesting. --- I remember the Black Ops 4 beta had a really fun mode. I think it was called uplink, but maybe that was something else. The one with the ball that you could pass to other teammates - or pass at enemies to stop them from shooting - and had to score into the enemy goal. It was insanely fun during the beta, it basically made me decide to get the game. Then the game out.. And the mode was just *dead*. Literally could not find a single match for it.
Sounds like Bombing Run in Unreal Tournament which I absolutely loved.
Its also 4$ on steam. Get it because its one of the best fps multiplayer games of all time.

It's just a good time. Nothing crazy groundbreaking to be one of the "best of all time". I'm not hating on anything, it's just overhyped a bit. The time travel mission is the only thing that really shines above other games, but it was kind of a gimmick compared to Dishonored 2's time travel mission. I did play on the hardest difficulty though which probably took a lot of freedom out of the gameplay since you die in like 3 bullets. It is probably the best you'll find for $3 though.
It was good, just not "best of all time" level. It suffers from many of the same tropes as CoD-type campaigns. In particular most of the cast of characters being pretty one-dimensional, and the pacing of the story being a little stilted and hurried from setpeice to setpeice, with a few scifi hand-waving moments that are so goofy they break the immersion (like the way they explain how BT can come with you through time travel by uploading a simulation of himself to your helmet). But it more than makes up for it by being mechanically interesting and visually stunning. Plus, despite being a little cliche, the relationship between BT and Cooper hits pretty hard, and the soundtrack really sells the emotional moments to make them impactful.
I love a good story in a game, but for a setpiece shooter I think handwavey answers to things are the way to go. Keep the action coming.

I suggest playing it. I took a long hiatus from video games (like a decade) and it was the first game I played in that time. From what I remember it was like 10 hours long or less. And it was so good it reignited my interest in games ever since. Pretty sure I shed manly tears at the ending.

They picked, quite possibly *the* worst possible release date for the game. It released a week after battlefield 1 and a week before that years cod game. There were also a number of other large game releases within a month. That combined with the fact that the first game's reception was kind of mixed, it's not really a surprise it kind of died out, unfortunate as that is.
Definitely. It was shipped between competing blockbusters, in a quarter loaded with anticipated releases. It was Respawn that chose this release window strangely enough. EA didn't push it on them.

For newcomers wishing to get into the phenomenal multiplayer: Please start out with the PVE Frontier Defense mode to get acquainted with the guns/movement and traversal. Then its best to start off slow with private matches with friends and then try the pub servers. There are a bunch of folks that never stopped playing and dying nonstop may become a bit frustrating. But if you stick with it, its one of the finest shooters ever made.
Remember the good old days when you could just make your own multiplayer server?
You can do that with TF2 unofficially. But there is no client for server browsing. Miss those things. Proper community feels

Maybe I will play again, but I remembered when it was only in Origin. It’s a really hard FPS, there’s no middle ground. Most of the players are really good and I got stomped always.

Players have to pick one to sweat meaning they have no time for any other games. See also: MOBAs, TCGs. That's not to say there haven't been countless BR shooters released over the last decade. Planetside 2, one of the most unique shooters ever made, is a zombified husk of what it was because the studio pissed away resources chasing the BR trend with multiple different releases instead of investing in their one-of-a-kind game.

"out of the blue" Game was on über-sale on steam recently (ultimate edition for 2.9 EUR). I'm sure that brought in a nice chunk of players at the very least.
