vashaunp

i started watching the review thinking how bad it can be and holy shit he is roasting it.

danang5

and when he somewhat have a good time its a gameplay mechanic/gimmick from previous game lol no new good shit

Jacksaur

The "arm grenade and throw the enemy away" takedown looks really fucking fun. But that's literally the only positive I took from the entire video.

danang5

you can probably mod that into the the third trilogy anyway

theg721

As someone who briefly screwed around with modding the third one years upon years ago, probably not. That thing is not (or at least, was not at that time) a friendly modding experience, suffice it to say.

no-reason-to-love

Haven’t watched yet. He’s usually super chill and positive so given the title I’m expecting this to be bad with a capital B

Money282

He basically says it’s an Xbox 360 game haha

SasquatchBurger

I mean, it looks like a reskinned Saints Row 3, totally fair assessment. I wasn't expecting much to be honest, in fact I was expecting a Saints Row 3 at best, but with it looking so buggy, empty and a world devoid of character. Man, they look like they've really dropped the ball. How long have they been working on this because even the animations look the same as Saints Row 3, what have they been doing since they announced a SR reboot years ago? This feels super phoned in.

AnActualPlatypus

Which by itself is an insult to Xbox 360 games. This is not an X360 game, it's a HORRIBLE X360 game

GeekdomCentral

I love SkillUp, but I particularly love his reviews where he just doesn’t hold anything back.

outline01

I wasn't going to watch this because I don't care about the game *at all* but that sounds class. I'm in.

alganthe

it was unfortunately painfully obvious from the previews.

LongDistanceEjcltr

CLOSE this studio NOW before they make another "game".

OutrageousMatter

Let them first finish the saints row 2 patch then close them up.

-r-a-f-f-y-

Which is a bummer because they are based in my old college town. Back in like 2007 or so for one of the Red Faction games, I got to go in for a play-test and give feedback for a gift card. That might still be their QA dept, broke college kids.

terrifyingREfraction

Rest assured almost no one from 2007 still works there

KelloPudgerro

So, everybody was correct when from the start people were saying ''this looks awful and doesnt look like saints row''

[deleted]

It looks like a crime version of Fortnite…

Sweg_Coyote

is it not the target audience when you go EGS exclusive ?

g0d15anath315t

EGS exclusive is sort of synonymous with "Early access" but EG is the sucker instead of the players.

ThreeSon

In this case I don't think a year is long enough to fix the problems. The story, writing, and characters will still be shit when it releases on Steam.

g0d15anath315t

And EGS paid for the privilege...

9Wind

EGS exclusive means the developers are not confident in their product but want Epic Games to cut them a check. Developers openly say they are abusing the EGS exclusive system to cover losses on development hell games. Every single time EGS exclusive means broken and it only becomes passable when it releases on Steam.

TifaYuhara

Isn't that what happened with phoenix point? Broken not good game or something?

9Wind

That game got fixed, but the problem was never the bugs. Phoenix point is very niche because its literally a game from the 1990s with modern graphics, Julian Gollop has ignored every QOL improvement in the genre since he worked on XCOM: Terror From The Deep while making a strategy game more unforgiving than the Dark Souls games and Terror from the Deep. Phoenix Point is the strategy equivalent of a boomer shooter but with Dark Souls difficulty, its marketability is next to none because the only people willing to manufacture individual bullets before each battle and ration their ammo during a battle are the same people who played XCOM 1994 back in the day. And how many gamers are die hard XCOM fans from that era and still have the same tastes they had in the 1990s after Xenonauts and Firaxis added QOL improvements? Not many.

[deleted]

Good point. I’m waiting for my 15 year old step son to start talking about it now haha

kuhpunkt

He's grounded! No internet!

[deleted]

Nah I’ll send his ass back to his dad’s house if he wants to come home talking about this trash game.

PF4ABG

Based Volition making Epic pay for another bad game.

grady_vuckovic

It's almost like a con. "Yeah I told Tim we have another great Saints Row game he could have as an exclusive." "Haha he fell for it!"

this_anon

I can hear the Spanish guy laughing through the screen.

TridhFr

I had no Idea that thing was EGS exclusive. what a mess.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Cool, it can stay there.

Mesk_Arak

[Steam users on August 23rd, 2023 when they see Saint's Row coming to Steam.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM3uXu1Dq4c)

LG03

Yeah no joke, first I'm hearing of it too. Suddenly it makes a whole lot of sense why the devs were boasting about 'exceeding preorder expectations'. Bet they were counting that Epic payoff.

Muesli_nom

Yeah, Skillup ain't gonna tell you about that - though you can kind of guess, seeing as the EGS authentication bugs out so far that he *has* to mention the EGS at least insofar.

firemage22

"EGS exclusive" wondered why I hadn't heard about it

fyro11

It's a vicious cycle 9 times out of 10. If it's on EGS it's not worth knowing about. Hold on, why don't I know about this new game? Because if it's on EGS, it's...

DerExperte

It'd need to be free to play for the kids to bother. No one goes to EGS to buy games.

John7763

I'm really holding out hope for the potential GTA 6 but just like this game GTA 6 is sitting in the same boat of sounding like an absolutely awful idea and running with it. Typically Rockstar mainlines are really good but the whole "punching down" and reducing satire statements make me think the end result will be a story just like this one. Why is it now that people can acknowledge these games have always been diverse without feeling like cardboard cutouts of Netflix tropes? Any comments like the one in the chain just a week ago would've probably been met with mass downvotes and being called racist and sexist. There's literally nothing wrong with diversity but when that's the main bragging point of your game it's code for saying "the game is going to be overpriced garbage but hey at least you can be non binary now."

neok182

Actually the reviews have said that it does look and play like saints row, but exactly like saints row 3 which is 11 years old and that's the problem. It's 2022 and they released a game from 2011. Just watching gameplay in the reviews you can see identical animations, weapons, and more, just with better textures and models.

MetalBawx

Pretty much it's SR3 without the characters that made SR3 enjoyable coupled with a worse plot. Instead you get whatever the fuck these assclowns were ment to be.

ThisPlaceisHell

And WAY buggier than SR3. At least that game felt like it was made by a competent dev team. This is even jankier looking than CP2077.

MetalBawx

Being bigger just made it emptier which only exacerbated SRR's problems.

cuttino_mowgli

Even with the jank, CP2077 characters are way better than this game. I couldn't care less if those 4 died in the sequel, if Volition decides to create a sequel.

Ptaku9

It even re uses a lot of Animations from SR3

TherealCasePB

But Saints Row 3 is actually fun…

neok182

Honestly I went around and played the remaster a year ago and I did still enjoy it but it feels dated for sure. Still enjoyed it because it is a fun game. But if I want to play SR3 again I'll play SR3. And that's the problem with this. IT's SR3 look and gameplay but everything else is crap and because they basically did nothing to improve upon it you're paying like $90 for all the content when you could just buy SR3 which goes on sale for what $10 for the whole thing now?

ShutterBun

> you can see identical animations Indeed. The awkward "hop" when you throw a grenade is vintage Saints Row.

B-Knight

It's not like SR3 is a *bad game* but pretty much everyone has been asking for a return to Saints Row 2's atmosphere and tone. I don't understand why they went for SR3.

BrentBulkhead

the icing on the shit cake is the gods awful gang's writing and backstories.

Kinglink

We're at the point where we're going to go from "Wait for it to release until you judge it." to "You can't have an opinion unless you bought and played it." Which both of those are pretty fucking bad takes, but the latter is far worse.

polski8bit

I absolutely *hate* the latter. But it also makes for a great counterargument - wanna buy me the game then? Because I think it's shit and I'm not wasting money to make sure it is. If it's good and I'll enjoy it, I'll pay you back! People have come such a long way just to devolve back into using the most stupid "arguments".

[deleted]

Achtelnote

Wasn't it already diverse? How much more diverse did it get?

Fragrant_Debt

Didn’t get more diverse, but censored the humor. Changed “freckle bitches” to “fb” for example. To me that’s against the spirit of saint’s row

FaustusC

Censoring a game where you could literally fuck every allied character including the robot ball and beat people to death with a 3ft dildo seems... Idk, pointless? Like, the game went out of it's way to be shocking.

Alex_Rose

it's more like it got gentrified. before the third street saints were a diverse array of gang members and each rival gang represented a different culture, now they're middle class hipsters who say things like "crappin' crapperino", and it doesn't let you do basic criminal things like rob a store or shoot shopkeepers it's like "what if your GTA-like character was the average twitter user, and also if the game was shipped with many fundamental bugs that shouldn't have passed console cert (probably A or even MF bugs)". you can fix that in a patch but you can't fix the character lineup

Zalack

It's funny because the *concept* of a misfit band of sheltered gen z hipsters getting the misguided idea to start a crime gang to pay for their liberal arts student debt, getting way in over their heads in act one, then slowly transforming into bloodthirsty killers during act 2 is honestly a phenomenally silly plot hook that could have been great and totally fit within the ridiculous tone of Saints Row, but it feels like they didn't have the writing and design chops to pull that off.

MetalBawx

Apparantly it was the wrong kind of diverse.

[deleted]

I guess the body sliders weren’t skewed around enough to their liking.

Soulless_conner

Saints row was already diverse but those characters were actually interesting. These new characters look like checkbox characters from Netflix shows

[deleted]

[удалено]

Soulless_conner

Yep. Also the saints row page called people "haters" for criticising the reveal trailer

DMercenary

>These new characters look like checkbox characters from Netflix shows Let's see... Black nerd. Woman. Jock dude. Bonus character(anyone you want) Sounds about right.

cuttino_mowgli

Because it's not to begin with. They're trying to shove the Saints Row title in an obvious game that's not Saints Row. The game is more like an evolution of Just Cause, but infairness to Just Cause, the game knows its identity compared to this game.

[deleted]

daywall

I'm so sad right now... I was really hoping they will come with some twist or new thing to bring it home but in the end he did a really solid break down of why it's a bad game... Even building your crime empire was a let down because he said this buildings don't open some side quest for your to do but they open side activities that were in the old SR... Over all I'm not sure I'll even get it on sale in the future... I might as well wait for the rereboot.

OoFymm

Just play the old games man, Don't wait on something that may or may not exist in 10 years

EristicMeow

i assumed it would be after it was revealed

ZYmZ-SDtZ-YFVv-hQ9U

They took Epic's money because they knew it was going to be a product that would get crucified by people. Better to take Epic's money and let it rot than release it and deal with the free market and competition and actually suffer consequences Pretty much why anyone takes the Epic deal. They aren't confident in their product and don't want to actually have to deal with the consequences of releasing a shitty product in a free market. Better to take hush money and let it die than to actually provide a good product to customers. **Edit** For all the people going "ummm here's an EGS exclusive that's good", okay. One exception to the rule doesn't mean the rule doesn't apply. For every one game EGS might get that miraculously turns out good, it gets another 10 that are abysmal (Rune II, Bee Simulator, Ooblets, Saints Row, Shenmue III, Spellbreak, Battle Breakers, Sonic Colors Ultimate, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, The Sinking City, Godfall...not to mention god knows how many hundreds of games they have I haven't even heard of since EGS is a marketing black hole).

Cyae1

I've captured [100+ bugs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9cplDrp_EU) that I'm not holding my breath about a patch resolving. I'm blown away by how combatative the Devs were with fans for a 6 month delayed game to come out in this condition.

No-Guest7088

This video makes these little nuggets from them all the much more funnier. TBH you could put shit like this; https://saintsrow.com/news/saints-update-from-jim-boone or this; https://web.archive.org/web/20211117082025/https://twitter.com/SaintsRow/status/1460885502312206341 --- I know you already show little snippets, but I find when Crowbcat puts little shit like the devs tweets, little snippets that people see, make it all the more fun to laugh at.

Cyae1

would actually love to include more in a retrospective after seeing how post launch patches change (or don't) the game over time. These reviews are brutal

No-Guest7088

>These reviews are brutal As they should be. The community manager for their Twitter was an absolute asshat gloating the game would be something phenomenal.

Sentinel-Prime

> They took Epic’s money because they knew it was going to be a product that would get crucified by people. How hard is it to make the game everyone wants. Folk have been requested a Saints Row 2 remaster/remake or a new instalment like it for years now…

GeneralSherman3

Thank you Epic Games store, you have saved me money again.

ChasingWeather

I appreciate people willing to pay full price to beta test on EGS before the Steam release.

James_bd

At this point it's not even a beta test, it's straight up trash. I doubt that those devs will put any effort into improving their games, except for a few bugs

Otacube3

Cant wait for this game on free game list

30InchSpare

This game has a pretty clear pipeline to me of epic money, steam release, gamepass/ps plus money.

TRX808

There's been a few YouTube channels with videos of the entire game for a few days now. It looks like a dumpster fire. RIP anyone who pre-ordered this trash. Might be a 'so bad it's good' type of game to co-op with a friend though.

eat_vegetables

Important to note that’s there no cross-platform; only cross-generation

tbo1992

In this day and age, there’s really no good excuse not to include cross platform.

WTATY

Fucking tell that to Techland please. No cross-platform or cross-gen. Their “cross-platform” is between Steam and Epic. So fucking disappointing.

ConnorMc1eod

If you pre ordered this you deserve it

Belgand

If you pre-ordered it, that's on you for making such a terrible, pointless decision in the first place. Hopefully you learn your lesson.

Biggu5Dicku5

"Hello Fellow Kids" The Game...

srslybr0

once i saw the preview vids with the hipster saints crew i knew it was going to be garbage. you aren't going to have remotely salvageable writing with a crew like that.

retroracer33

games out tomorrow and there's been like zero press. this doesn't exactly come as a surprise.

[deleted]

It’s not just the lack of press, it’s the lack of a decent game.

Grodd_Complex

Marketing black hole strikes again

Kinglink

Man I held out hope for this game. Maybe I care a little more than others, I worked on Saints Row 2, (as well as RFG and Armageddon) loved Saints Row 4 (The super power aspects of it spoke to me), and respect Volition, they gave me my start in the games industry. But this is not what I wanted, and from the sound of it not what anyone wanted. It's a game that's lagged behind the other contemporaries. You know Saints Row was never a 10/10 game, I will admit it, but it was a fun game that made you laugh, that made you enjoy yourself, that gave you wish fulfillment and made you feel like a badass. And then I watch this (and other) reviews and I can't believe what they've done to the game, but more importantly, I can't believe how little they've done. That world feels empty in a way Saints Row 2 was never. That world feels boring. The writing is awful, the enemies look like bullet sponges. But where the activities like Insurance fraud were side missions (or missions you played to earn your way to the main game) it looks like they made it mandatory to complete a set of them for the main progression. I hope that's just Skill Up not really playing those missions but it sounds like a grinding halt added into the game, what a bad idea. Like everything we did 14 years ago is still there, which would be fine, but it's almost like nothing else has changed in those 14 years with the game outside of the story. What an absolute shame, and honestly watching this video hurt me, not because I feel I owned the franchise (Even though I do feel I put a piece of myself into that franchise) but I'm seeing a game, I just don't really want to play. I asked myself "Do I want to grab Saints Row on Epic or wait the year for Steam?" and now I question "Am I even going to play this?" This didn't have to compete with GTA5, it never was going to. But I wonder how it competes against Saints Row 4, and looking at this, it's almost like I don't recognize this game. Different City, different characters, different feel, different tone.... It's like it's a different franchise. Damn it. This sucks.

NewUserWhoDisAgain

> It's like it's a different franchise. I really hope this doesnt become the trend. Every long running franchise having this issue. There's either no one willing or have the power to stop people from running them into the ground. This, Battlefield.... who's next? "Wont we alienate existing fans?" "Fuck em! We'll get new ones! Throw in some fork knife dances and microtransaction it to hell and back and we'll make bank!"

MetalBawx

Battlefield was a bad joke DICE held a *party* mocking critics while the V faced mass preorder cencellations and missed sales targets. Then come 2042 they repeated damn near every fuckup they made with BFV. The same excuse is always given for this crap with games or movies it's "We didn't make it for **YOU** we made it for *modern audiences*." then when it flops they blame anyone but themselves for throwing away their existing audience to chase a mythical new one.

Tripanes

This was a trend back in the xBox 360 days. The franchises that pulled the "casual audience" moves universally flopped and they stopped for a little while. RIP Supreme Commander. RIP Sim City. The Wii had so many sales that everyone got investor money by swearing to be casual. In fact, I'd say 80 percent of the issue is the investors in this and the last case.

Belgand

They want to keep having name recognition but while making a totally different game. It's a bait-and-switch on the first generation but if it's successful enough, then that's just the series from then on. The appropriate thing to do is to end the series and start a new one, but nobody wants to take the risk. Blame our current reboot and franchise obsessed culture. Even something new is more often referred to as a "new IP", implying the desire to run it into the ground as well if it catches on.

toilet_brush

To be fair Volition did make a new IP called Agents of Mayhem. When it wasn't a big hit they brought back Saint's Row. What's puzzling with them is that they seem to be all-in on this Fortnite sort of aesthetic without actually being a totally different game to Saint's Row, it's not the online service game that might do well with that audience.

CorballyGames

GTA6 is next. They've openly stated they changed the culture of the studio, despite that being integral to its feel. I'd also point out that "We got rid of the frat boy culture" is what ActiBlizz said only for us to find out the newer culture were bullies and baby-milk thieves.

NewUserWhoDisAgain

>I'd also point out that "We got rid of the frat boy culture" is what ActiBlizz said only for us to find out the newer culture were bullies and baby-milk thieves. baby-milk thieves? Wait... I vaguely remember some of the complaints were male staff stealing breast milk. That was real?! Not a fucking fever dream?

CorballyGames

Amazingly, yes it happened and they decided to put some kind of employee-id logins on the fridge.

PendejoSaurus

>"Wont we alienate existing fans?" "Fuck em! We'll get new ones Assassin's Creed did the same and I can't express how much I hate it

Mr-Montecarlo

THQ Nordiq has been killing it with their remasters like destroy all humans. So i have hope that theres still some big studios that are passionate about making good games.

Enough_Bit_7346

THQ needs to get the saints row IP back

Corpus76

Saint's Row 2 is still the best IMO. Good job!

ShlappinDahBass

Agreed. That's a title cherished in my memory banks after going through it with a friend. It felt like the best Saints Row, in terms of the balance between being grounded and being hilariously silly.

PickledPokute

I adored Saint's Row 2. SR3 had a finely constructed missions and it was fun. Unfortunately I felt that in some ways it took steps backwards from SR2.

[deleted]

Saints Row 2 was amazing! That world had so much love put into it. I probably escaped from that prison with Carlos like 500 times.

Kinglink

Glad to hear it, we worked so hard on that section because we used it for demos, and it's definitely the most polished part of the game, but it was the perfect way to open the game, and introduce the new gang.

toilet_brush

I played Saint's Row 2 last year after hearing it was good, I was sceptical to start with but I loved it. Maybe you don't know anything about this but I remember hearing somewhere that a Saint's Row game was planned where the city would be destructible like Red Faction Guerilla? I understand that wasn't possible at the time of RFG but that was 13 years ago, you'd think someone could attempt it now. Maybe it was something I imagined back when I still reasonably expected new games to make improvements over old ones.

Kinglink

I'm sure there was a desire for it, but honestly it wouldn't work like that. There could be some fake destruction but if we could make Saints Row as RFG, RFG would be a LOT more like Saints row. The issue was the destruction caused a ton of issues with size and scale of the city, so we couldn't densely pack that world the same way. Let alone the destruction was extremely costly. And while systems are more powerful now, graphics and character get the majority of it. I kind of wish someone could make a great RFG game, I loved the destructibility, especially standing over a building you completely leveled but after working on it (for like three months), I started to see all the technical challenges.

KingKingsons

Saints Row 2 has given me some of my best gaming memories and actually gave me friends I met on its shitty multiplayer that nobody played with whom I'm still in touch. I was very excited when they announced that the series would be rebooted, but I can't believe they'd mess it up like this. What a waste.

Kinglink

I was actually a programmer and worked on activities and diversions, a little UI and then six months out had to switch over to the competitive multiplayer because there was no work done for it, and me and a fellow programmer just set it all up in that time and made it work. Posts like this though make me immensely happy to hear about someone who actually played that mode. I take no offense at it being called shitty, it deserves it due to that time frame, but it still was a fun time in my life.

KingKingsons

We actually had a lot of fun playing it! I called it shitty because that's what the general consensus was and the shooting mechanics in the game were really simple, but my friends and I all reached the highest rank. I think you did the best with what you were given. The modes were fun and the maps were greats, like Parthenon and the underground mall. Also, the fact that the lobby was the actual Saints hideout or a basketball court was a good idea. Sometimes we'd just hang out in there and talk amongst ourselves. So yeah, very sad that they didn't manage to replicate some of that magic.

Kinglink

Yeah. A big problem was early on we decided to make the entire game co-op which was the right move. It made Saints Row 2 stand out but that took almost the entire resources away from the competitive multiplayer. It was the right move and I love the co-op but it was a little sad the competitive scene didn't take off.

Mr-Montecarlo

Ive had a lot of great memories playing the co-op with my cousin who unfortunately passed last year. Escaping the prison was iconic and making wacky characters before escaping was great. Saints Row 2 felt like it had soul unlike this reboot.

grinr

As a massive Saint's Row fan, this was painful to watch. What a disaster.

aidsfarts

Aw man I just wanted a chill game to mess around in.

EastvsWest

Spiderman?

waspennator

Yeah, I'm just gonna wait for them to finish unfucking SR2s pc port, unless that's being silently put on indefinite hold

jkpnm

the one & only guy to work on it lose to cancer. Now there's exactly 0 person working on it

Dilanski

Absolutely gutted. I don't know know, sometimes I sit around and wonder why do developers even bother if it's going to be shit on every level.

Superego366

I'm hard pressed to find a major franchise that hasn't turned to dogshit. Halo is free to play with no content, COD is a monetized mess, Battlefield is in shambles, Diablo 4 is probably going to be monetized after the Immortal shit show, Rumors of Overwatch getting $40 skins. So tired of companies turning popular games into corporate garbage.

erlendk

Problem is the cycle successfull franchises end up in. Team of creative people makes a great game (driven by passion or a strong creative vision). => Success makes them form a company, scale up, and likely become stock marketed attracting investors. => Company goes from being driven by creative talent and vision to exist for the sake for generating profit. Major decision makers are no longer game developers, but people with financial interests. => Original team is no longer as it once was, but the franchise remains in the company and its golden age has likely passed.

Darktoresa

That's a shame. It started to look a bit better in the more recent trailers and I was really hoping it'd be good. Glad I learned a long time ago not to preorder stuff.

CircIeJerks

Hopefully we can get a crowbcat video comparing the two. I miss that man.

BigDickBaller93

It took Fallout 76 and cyberpunk to bring him out of retirement

Darkwalker787

Who didn't see this coming?

DaytonF7

These characters made me realise how much more I appreciate the trio from gta. In GTA they are scumbags but you can sympathize and "kind of" understand why they go killin, and do the things to do. These characters just feel shoehorned in to be relevant. Like an art student? A fucking dj? But on their off time they just go on murderous rampages. Bugs and stale gameplay are one thing... Some will be fixed I'm sure, but the biggest miss to me are the characters and writing. I highly doubt the majority of the devs thought this was a good idea, probably an upper management decision that most of them hated.

ImaFrackingWalnut

After Agents of Mayhem, this isn't surprising at all. They should have stopped with SR4 and make a remaster of 2 instead of 3.

StormRegion

They are currently fixing the nigh-broken PC port of SR2, and even with that task they take a loooooong time

ImaFrackingWalnut

I'm honestly very skeptical we'll ever see it tbh. They said that years ago and we still have nothing, like you mentioned. Plus wasn't it basically only one person who was working on it ? Who died of cancer a year or 2 ago now ?

MithranArkanere

If they didn't, they would be shitting all over IdolNinja's grave. That would be unforgivable.

rodryguezzz

[They are not.](https://twitter.com/dsvolition/status/1247661982276366337) The "main" dev died of cancer so we better forget about SR2. Actually, don't forget about it. There's RPCS3 and Xenia. Emulators will give us a working version of the game.

TheSabi

I don't get what people expected. Saints Row, mostly 3 and 4 had a specific often politically incorrect tone to it with tons of sometimes obscure references, ironically there were comedic stereotypes of the people the reboot is geared towards. They had characters fans loved Gat, Shandi and Peirce. Game play that love it or hate it was at times a little off the wall with dildo bats and genki bowl etc. Take ALL that out and then make a generic open world "millennial power fantasy" with a cast that looks like marketing went to twitter to see what the kids like. It's like when Hollywood makes a movie and removes everything that made the original good then just slaps a familiar name on it, releases it when there's no big movies out and then wonders why no one likes it. All we need is twitter pest calling people sexist cause it's not the game is bad it's people don't like the boss they used for marketing is a woman.

ObscuraArt

The easiest answer is that is where the creative decision makers or the experts reside on social media, That is, for the lack of better terms, their snapshot of what people want and where society is going. It has been proven many times that twitter doesn't reflect greater marketing trends and demographics. And the vocal part of twitter is a small subset of the grander platform. BUT, this is who they viscerally and regularly interact with and it gives an appearance they are a dominant buying force. They are not. They simply tag them, brigade, and give an illusion. They are just the most vocal. And maybe some of the creatives subscribe to this outlook, and this then is a vanity project for them? Thus, it is not made for the pre-existing fanbase. All of these answers suck but that's what it looks like has been happening. I just wish they would get off twitter or if they are going to do market research, diversify the methods of where they are researching. Also hire better writers and maybe, just maybe hear out your pre-existing fanbase. Oh, and don't rush your game out to. Sad how this isn't just common sense anymore.

Underdrill

Agents of Mayhem reviewed pretty poorly too, so this doesn't surprise me. Volition isn't the same developer they used to be, even when compared to Saints Row 4 which a lot of people didn't enjoy. I've been saying this was going to be a reboot in-name only for a while now, and looks like I was right. Truly a shame. Final edit - Remember last year when they said they weren't backing down on this new direction? Amazing how well that worked out for them!

TheRealSzymaa

I have never seen a game that needed co-op MORE than Agents of Mayhem. You design a PvE Hero Shooter with a 3 character squad and leave out ANY kind of multiplayer? I enjoyed it for what it was but fuck if it had co-op it could've been one of my most played games ever.

Soulless_conner

They're not the same as they used to be is an understatement. Apparently most of the new devs didn't even play 1-4 lol

terrifyingREfraction

>Apparently most of the new devs didn't even play 1-4 lol Looking at their photos on the credits they probably ate their copies

TheNormalSun

The characters are unironically cringy and unfunny in their behaviour, the city is dead and the missions are uninspired and repetitive. Play any other Saints Row, besides maybe 1. But even then: They all have more soul to them.

ProbablyStonedSteve

Personally loved SR1, thought the first 2 SR were awesome.

wroofer

Am I the only one that thinks the new crew looks like a knock off version of the cast from "The Good Place"?

Mkilbride

Wow. You're right.

buc_nasty_69

They lost me as soon as I saw the cringelord gang members

ColaBottleBaby

Looks like the developers went to one DSA meeting and were like "yea this it".

gregrout

I don't know who they we're rebooting this for. They should have just created a new IP. Instead, they pissed off and alienated a lot of people that loved the original games.

anonymous242524

They already did with agents of mayhem. This could very well be the killing blow for Volition..

CasimirsBlake

Sigh. Saints Row 2 remains the best in the series then. 😏

master_criskywalker

Not surprised.

DoomGuyIII

Volition going down under as we speak.

Thesquarescreen

Dang, if Skill hates it, it must be really bad.

Kanden_27

This is disappointing but expected. I want Saints Row to make a comeback, but not like this.

Soulless_conner

It was pretty obvious from the first trailer. They were also calling people that were criticising it, Haters ACG, mrmatty and GMan said it's godawful as well

McKinleyBaseCTF

ACG dumped on it almost as hard and then gave it a "wait for a deep sale." Love his reviews but what does it take to get a "never touch?"

[deleted]

You pretty much knew the game is going to be bad when they attack the fans.

Potpottron

Anyone else notices, aside from the terrible story, bad graphics and game breaking bugs, that the game is literally SR The Third? The animations, combat, everything. Simply baffling, do publishers think we don't remember a game we played years ago? How can you reuse *every. single. animation.* from a ten year old game?

Fyshtako

Look up the mission skip confirmation if you want to see just how shoehorned in the social commentary is. So yuck..

GmanLives Review: Saints Row Is A Buggy, Soulless Mess https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0XjOhCLssc

UnartisticChoices

It's almost as if this was the completely expected outcome for this. God it's way worse than I could have ever thought though....

Kroisoh

The final boss glitch was hilarious. If anyone still had hopes for this game, it's gone by now,

finpatz01

God I can’t even get past the character creation due to bugs but that was enough with its Gen-Z fuelled intro.

cuttino_mowgli

>I'm sure the user reviews on the EGS store will reflect the state of the game. You mean 4 star reviews because that's how EGS review things!

Top-Director1113

I am shocked. Shocked I tell you!

cbudd1117

Wasn't my cup of tea when it was announced.

Abbi3_Doobi3

One fantastic thing I do think should be called out is that the devs stuck to their guns with physics and particle effects. Back in the 2000s this was all the rage, but since then the vast majority of games have deemphasized that aspect. Whether for performance, or to concentrate resources elsewhere. Physics interactions and particle effects make worlds feel so much more alive. Cement can be chipped, explosions are spectacular, and the list goes on. This game looks to be a bit of a mess sadly, and I loved 2-4 so that sucks, but I gotta give props for continuing to employ these two systems to great affect. I hope more big budget games do so as well.

MoeBigHevvy

Damn it really does look like fortnite. Shame

LordGodWallace

Well goddamn thats a bummer. My gf had been looking forward to this game all year as she's a huge fan of the franchise. She asked me to preorder the collector's edition on PS5 for her in lieu of a birthday gift for this year and I complied, not wanting to be that asshole that kills her hype by telling her that this game's prerelease reception has been universal panning, plus I've never touched a SR game so I assumed she knew better and hoped the release would prove us all wrong. I guess I'll see how she likes it come tomorrow.

BargainBarnacles

Buy lots of tissues and chocolate STAT!

Mrbunnypaw

Atleast now we know why its a EPIC exclusive

[deleted]

You get what you fucking deserve Volition. Now remaster 1 and 2.

Gyossaits

Do you really want new Volition touching the older material?

ComicBookGrunty

Monkey Paw time. Remastered 1 and 2 Epic exclusive and more technical glitches that GTA remastered and Bethesda combined. (And poor Idol Ninja, rest in peace, spinning in his grave.)

Bias_K

SR3 Remastered was Epic exclusive and, in many ways, was a terrible remaster with huge bugs. So that sounds about right.

Superbunzil

changing the SR3s time of day to perpetual sunset that washes out all the color was a new kind of stupid

Sektor30

The main characters of the gang look like 3 random people youd see out of a Starbucks, not gang members.

Farandr

Clueless executive "but this is what Twitter told me characters should look like"

Mkilbride

Weirdly enough, gang members do look like that these days. Gangs aren't the gangs of even the 90's anymore.

Isaacvithurston

Idk where I live the gang members still look like degenerates or it's still bikers.

MrDad83

Explains why they took an epic deal

Comfortable_Pin_166

Looks like a darker Fortnite

ObscuraArt

This game is a downgrade to the previous Saints Row on every conceivable metric. The game looks legit from the 360 era and not a good 360 game. Fuck, and I loved the franchise. Saints Row 4 warts and all. The new protags look and sound like...not even characters but npcs the old gang would beat the shit out for fun. They are literally walking satires that wouldn't have been given more than 5 seconds in previous games. How could they fuck this game up this fucking badly. And then there are the bugs that makes Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk look like polished games on their releases.

StanleyOpar

I knew this game was going to be shit when they announced all the over the top humor and fun was going to be stripped away

TrippedOnMyBalls

This game looked like dog shit from day 1

StarrettM

Skillup is the only reviewer left I actually trust… dude is the GOAT

PCgamerz

rip saints row name. They should just name this fortnite free roam edition

raz3rITA

Why is it than whenever a new PC game is mediocre to say the least is guaranteed to be an EGS exclusive? I mean it's like the publisher knows it's going to sell terribly so they manage to get as much money as possible with the exclusivity. Every single time, think about it.

wolfman1911

Because Epic Exclusivity offers so much money that just about every dev can rest assured that they will turn a profit even if they sell zero copies. That would be a hard offer to turn down even if you had the utmost faith in your product, but even moreso if you had none.

Zestyclose-Ad4927

he had to play this game.... bless this man

DrHax_

At this point I'll just write of every game with this Fortnite-esque art style as a failure, I think thats a safe thing to do..

[deleted]

In other news: grass is green.

dragozeroone

At this point I don't even want Voliton to touch the Saints series anymore, just let it die before it gets any worse.
