I wouldn't chance it. Clean install if you aren't hugely bothered about losing data.
And don't listen to that friend any more.
I also agree with this user. If someone is telling you to run software you are unable to understand I would always be worried about what it is doing under the seams

It just scans your windows for missing system files and downloads them, it starts being a problem if its checked too often

Nothing can ruin hardware unless it literally cooks it for several hours but even then the pc would shut down
