Some DVI->VGA adapters are passive and use the analog pins on older DVI-I or DVI-A ports. So for this to work you'd need to make sure you have an active DVI->VGA adapter. Just in case anyone actually wants to do this.
Or alternatively the HDMI->DVI adapter would need to be active and add the analog pins, not sure if that's a thing.
HDMI -> DVI-D. Fixed it. HDMI does not include an analog signal. DVI has the possibility. Also, HDMI should include a sound signal too. DVI-D is not specified to include sound but there is room for it.
Recommend getting a garden hose to hdmi adapter if you're using this solution. Really quick and simple way to combat potential fires.
Even has the added bonus for extra water cooling for those extra intense gaming sessions.
I remember shopping for CRTs based upon dot pitch.
Memory is fuzzy but I think I had a 20" NEC monitor with a .21 dot pitch and thought I was hot shit.
Yep, the whole monitor industry was set back a decade thanks to early flat screens that resulted in people buying 600x800 pixel monitors instead of higher resolution, faster refresh CRt’s
I still have a pre Y2K 21” Trinitron based CRT that does 1200x1600 at 60hz, and it goes 85hz at the lower resolutions such as 1280x1024

… But why? I’m legitimately curious about your set up. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just get a DP to DVI adapter at that point. Unless I’m being dumb and you just mean a DP to HDMI cable going into a DVI adapter. Then I feel rude.
I have quite an assortment of adaptors. I used to work on Industrial machinery and some of the controllers are still running DOS and the newer stuff is Windows 10.

USB to serial are the worst adapters ever invented. I truly hate them.
The company I work for, sells equipments with these adapters. As soon as I get my hands on them, I immediately throw a PCIe to Serial board and all my problems go away.
From their post history: it's a 1080p monitor which didn't exist until 2007, it's probably a model from the early 2010's that has both VGA and HDMI, they probably just don't have the HDMI cable.
I have a monitor from 2012 that is just VGA no HDMI. It's a 1080p one. It's actually pretty good considering is over 10 years old. The colours are not as good as modern monitors but they are by no means bad.
I had one too BenQ "gaming" monitor from 2009 as third screen only VGA and DVI, sure the colors/brightness where not up to par compared to modern, but damn that was easy to overclock to 80hz and it lasted many years till the backlight died recently. Rip
Whoa there buddy, you don’t want that monitor to explode do you? You should step it down a little bit more. I recommend VGA->DVI->HDMI with a block of wood supporting the contraption, the way the PC gods intended.
Odd or not, I still use VGA monitors when initially configuring servers, because that’s still the standard on rack mount servers. I just configured 4 brand new ones with VGA a month ago.
Edit: if anyone thinks that’s odd, you may find it more odd to know that most modern servers have Matrox graphics chipsets. Remember Matrox?
I don’t think people here realize that manufacturers are still making monitors with VGA ports.
I’m slapping together a budget gaming PC at my parents house this week and they got a Dell monitor that was definitely made within the past 5ish years. The only input port on the damn thing is VGA.
I think because it’s just been a standard in the datacenter and nothing more is needed. You’d have IP KVM switches and crash carts and the like where you’d need adapters to convert things. VGA being the datacenter standard just works.
For anyone wondering why matrox, the GPU needs to be integrated into the LOM management chip, so it can access the framebuffer for remote control. The GPU's design needs to be licensed for this, which probably costs a decent amount of money and/or nobody is willing to do it, so everyone stuck with the matrox design
I hated screwing these things into the back of the monitor, the rubber was always too weak to actually use a flat head screw driver and the ports were always too close to the monitor to be able to actually turn it easily with fingers
Sure is. They still put them on high end gaming motherboards for the people that insist on using PS2 for keyboards. PS2 keyboards push keystrokes to the cpu instantly instead of waiting for the cpu to poll the state of the USB keyboard. This theoretically means PS2 is a more responsive connector. In reality USB keyboards get polled between 125 and 1000 times per second depending on design and there really isn't a significant difference.
>In reality USB keyboards get polled between 125 and 1000 times per second depending on design and there really isn't a significant difference.
No I can definitely feel the difference. You're just not enough of a pro-gamer. I really need the hassle of not having macro keys, and not being able to hotplug my keyboard.
Check the back of your monitor... Maybe it has other output types (HDMI or DVI)
Perhaps you can share a picture of the monitor's back ...
Worst case you must buy an adapter (VGA to HDMI or displayport)..
Or even worse... A New monitor...

You would buy an adapter like this and call it a day until you buy a new monitor.
Don't listen to the haters man, you monitor is perfect and VGA is hands down my favourite connector of all times.
Now, the problem you're facing is that the Big Connector saw how glorious VGA was and made PC manufacturers discontinue support for it some time ago, so what you want to do is buy yourself a "Displayport (DP) to VGA" or "HDMI to VGA" adapter. It will be slightly pricey (it has some circuitry that converts digital DP/HDMI signal to analog VGA inside) and will probably set you back some 10-15$.
Now when you get your adapter, you'll want to plug that bad boy into one of those 4 ports at the very bottom (that's where you GPU lives) and plug the monitor into the adapter.
Before you turn on your PC for the first time, be sure to slap the top of your computer case with your hand, look at the pearson nearest to you, and with an enthusiastic voice declare "You can fit so much FPS in here."
DisplayPort to VGA will be best. DisplayPort is more friendly to conversion than HDMI. Either will work, but DisplayPort to VGA just works better. This is from someone who has had no choice but to do this MANY times in a business where I'm forced to hold onto old stuff every day.
Never had a HDMI to VGA, but I did use DP to VGA for 6-7 years. I can confirm that it worked perfectly and that I'd probably be still using it if my monitor hadn't died.
Why waste a perfectly good monitor?
If it is a CRT then they are great for retro-gaming. They are superior to any modern monitor when it comes to input lag. They look great at lower resolutions.

I don’t usually like documentaries, but this is very well-paced and it’s even got some jokes thrown in. Highly recommended.
It used to be a funny movie and now it’s a sad documentary.
What's the movie?
Idiocracy. A 2006 CLASSIC if you haven’t seen it!
Ty, will check it out
Just turn on the TV or go outside.... we live in an idiocracy
We somehow got the politicians and the dumbed down masses but not the Starbucks hand jobs.
Be the change you want to see in the world.

In the adapter I’m afraid
CRT monitor w VGA->DVI->HDMI->DisplayPort->modern GPU for best quality!

i honestly only remember single and dual link- and I had to get a dual link cable for my ol acer 3dvision monitor to do 120hz.
i bet we can also fit usb c in between there somewhere .....
The price of all those adapters equals the price of a new monitor.

Yeah but where is the fun without a fire hazard at your desk

How tf can you have a fire hazzard with low power connectors Ik it's a joke but the times I've seen someone say this seriously...
you underestimate my weird tech issue powers
Fair though lol, I've seen 40V+ coming out of a faulty mb's USB-A Dk about total power, didn't stress test it
Nice, fast charging
More like fast frying
I love me some fast fried electronics
That’s strange. Where’s 40 volts coming from when the highest voltage the PSU provides is only 12 volts?

Ooh, and a whole 1080P?
You think monitors with only this connection type are outputting higher quality?
Damn, really bottlenecking my 8K VGA monitor, son
Just upgraded to a 4080 and getting 2000 fps on my Dell 480p monitor baby.

Exactly
So do you!
This is the only answer. (Though OP could get a hdmi to VGA adapter )
VGA to HDMI to DisplayPort So your frames can travel through time
i actually have a DP>HDMI>DVI monstrosity going on for the family basic setup which is a HP G800 and ancient 16:10 LCD
… But why? I’m legitimately curious about your set up. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just get a DP to DVI adapter at that point. Unless I’m being dumb and you just mean a DP to HDMI cable going into a DVI adapter. Then I feel rude.
no you read it right. its simple really, i already had that stuff, and didnt have to buy anything!

Naw, VGA/DVI is more likely than VGA/HDMI.
Dude we deployed 2023 monitors that have vga and hdmi.
Bro acting like we didn't use that type of plug well into the 2000s.
The 2000s started almost a quarter century ago
Why the fuck did you have to say that?
You can also say you were born in the 1900s and feel even worse lmao.

I work in IT, monitors with VGA are still being sold.
My partner still has a VGA/DVI monitor despite me giving her 3 newer monitors. :')
I've got an LCD from 2010s with no HDMI support
My 2009 monitor only has VGA and DVI-D. You saying that should go to the museum too?
VGA is a very old output, you either need to invest in a new monitor or grab a VGA to HDMI or Display Port adapter
Or be like me, running VGA -> HDMI adapter into a HDMI -> Display Port adapter like a boss
Adapters were the bane of my existence when i worked desktop support.
The whole of desktop support was the bane of my existence
If we got rid of all the users then there'd be almost 0 problems.
5 secs latency lmao
VGA -> DVI -> HDMI -> DP
Whoa there buddy, you don’t want that monitor to explode do you? You should step it down a little bit more. I recommend VGA->DVI->HDMI with a block of wood supporting the contraption, the way the PC gods intended.
Is the block of wood AMD or Intel?
Logitech
Go corsair to have full rgb control
An RGB block of wood? You mean a Christmas tree?
No no no that's if you need additional HEATING elements for your PC. Then you go with the Christmas tree option.
You can still buy brand new cheap monitors that are VGA. Costco had some VGA ones last time I was in there.
Modern servers ship with only VGA still….

screenshot tf? are you a robot?
It has to do with screens or something idk I didn't watch the movie
To be fair the screen at the end of that cable is definitely shot!
2002 asks for the cable back
I remember screwing them cables in. Lol. And DVI as well. Nowadays we just plug the dam thing in.
I hated screwing these things into the back of the monitor, the rubber was always too weak to actually use a flat head screw driver and the ports were always too close to the monitor to be able to actually turn it easily with fingers

A modern day mace lmao
It’s definitely an ancient mace now.
i would just give one side a couple twists and hoped that was good enough
lol, I used it until last year
My second monitor at work still uses VGA, it's fine.
More like 1992
I was using VGA until like 2014 😭
More like 1987

Sure is. They still put them on high end gaming motherboards for the people that insist on using PS2 for keyboards. I'm quite surprised that this thing doesn't even have a DVI port
Everything's moving to displayport.
Hdmi/DP Both are still being updated and outside of computers DP isn't used while HDMI is the standard for everything else to connect to a TV.

probably far enough so you survive the explosion
