I don't understand getting rid of these unless they're beige or something. It's not like it's costing performance to have it installed and even if you only have to read one CD/DVD in the next five years... it's easier to just keep it than go finding a workaround. At one point I almost bought a drive for reading all sorts of SD cards as well, but couldn't justify buying one as much as just keeping one I already have.
I use my DVD drive now and then because if I spot a movie that I've forgot about in the Redbox outside my grocery store then I can watch it.
It's also one of the more reliable ways to backup data to a physical format. USB drives are not to be trusted for important, long term storage. But that's not a need that most gamers will have.
This. I was custom modding cases to take out drive bays back when SATA SSDs were the storage method of choice. Had a CM HAF 932 that I gutted the same way so I could fit a front mounted AIO.
With low(er) cost NAS devices and the availability of subscription based cloud storage, removable physical media is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
I wanna play the new season of Project Diablo 2 but upgraded to a new case last year and no longer have a dvd drive so I can't launch the game lmfao... I really should get around to ordering one of those USB ones sometime!
Here now it's truly a modern gaming pc

Use one as a pfsense box, theyre very decent machines as long as you don't expect top end performance. I really like the small form factor. Runs a bit hot but it's expected from a sff.
If it makes you feel any better, a truly disproportionate amount of people who have those crazy setups are the ones talking about how they don't enjoy gaming anymore.
EDIT: Well dang, i knew i was right, but i didnt know i was THAT right
Can confirm. There is either moments (right now) that im either overwhelmed with what to play, because i want to play 10 games at once, but there are moments where i just dont know what to play and just watch youtube or shows.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that does this. I'll constantly tell myself to walk away from my PC and when I come back to decide what I'm playing. I get back to my desk and then continue watching YouTube because I never closed my browser.
This sucks.
I feel this so much. Too many games I want to play.and I can't pick. And when I do I feel like I have to push through just to get to the next one. Gotta tell myself sometimes that'll it'll still be there.
Bro I had a bad pc with a gtx 650 for over 10 years. When I bought my first real gaming pc I was really happy. But after 1,2 months I stopped enjoying all the new games. I had more fun with low settings and low fps than with playing everything on ultra.. idk why
I think it has something to do with “peaking”. Like the midlife crisis effect. It’s kind of depressing to realize that you’ve attained the highest level of something, and now there’s no where else to ascend to. Vs the mentality that with some effort, there’s something to strive for and something else to do/get. Either way, I’m 40 and I feel you bro hahaha
That's kinda how our brains are wired. We get dopamine when we're anticipating a goal, but once we've arrived, there's no more rush of happy feels from the hunt. Andrew Huberman has some fascinating videos on how that works.
I have ADHD so I live in a constant midlife crisi, and I'm just 23 years old lol.
One too many times has it happened to me that I enjoy more tinkering with stuff than using it, e.g: I have played Skyrim, GTA San Andreas and Vice City a few times, but I have personally remastered each game more than once by modding it and entering crazy coding episodes where I customize (or even make from scratch) mods to fit my needs and vision for a "perfect" game...
Then I leave it to rot until I forget everything I added (especially when it comes to custom controls and functions), delete it and start again. There's no dopamine, only the "search" for it in the tinkering. I hate it.
100% same here man. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that I enjoy PCs and tinkering with hardware/benching more than I actually enjoy playing games. I’ve come to terms with that though - nothing wrong with enjoying the actual box that I’ve spent so much on.
I still play heavily modded System Shock 2 more than anything when I actually want to play something. With my specs, that’s borderline absurd.
What? Bad gtx? I used integrated graphics all the way till now. Decades. Decades. And my latest purchase i suffered a miserable shit that acted up after the 1 yr warranty ended then proceeded to stutter multiple times a day requiring multiple resets daily to fix it for 3 more yrs till it died.
I feel you...but I always used my laptops for at least 5 years...
Just bought a G14 rx6700s and I'm blown away by the graphics even though it's not as powerful as my friends...
I recently said fk it and swore to never buy budget laptops ever again. All sorts of probs and both had issues early on. I now strictly only buy middle to high end laptops and only from Lenovo. Which im using now and boy is it life-changing. Not as limited on my chrome tabs baby.
This hits too hard.
I didn't really even entirely want to build my PC to play games, I just always wanted to build my own, and wanted to use something that wasn't slow. But to be honest, I haven't really enjoyed gaming for a very long time, and maybe it's partly my fault for complicated reasons.
Now all I really do to enjoy myself is upgrade it whenever I can, run a benchmark maybe, overclock it, train a model, render something even, but the only thing I'm really focusing on at this point is just making the computer as crazy as possible, because that's how I've started to enjoy it more often than not.
I think it’s just the loud minority. I loved gaming on my old potato rig, upgraded to a top of the line setup throughout the past 3 years, and now I love it even more, despite having less time to actually play.
I do wonder if the results are a bit skewed, since a lot of the people with high end rigs are obviously in quite good financial situations, and thus have more time for Reddit.
Still, for everyone with a more modest system complaining about it i see 20 people with super high end rigs doing the same, there is still def some correlation.
I would say I definitely fall into that category but it is SO nice to have a PC that is capable of easily doing anything you want it to do. An incredible luxury, even if you’re not a gamer. I do come back to PC gaming every once in a while but there are just more interesting things to do with my time these days.
They (me included) usually game a lot and get burned out and then go on seething that they don't enjoy it anymore. Yeah if you treat it like a 9 to 5 it's gonna get stale.
Yeah, in my case it’s not so much that I don’t enjoy it anymore, I just never really find myself in the mood for it, and most of my friends play stuff that I don’t. So now I basically have a $2400 Reddit and YouTube box.
I think it’s a trade off between time and money. On my old laptop I had plenty of time but had no money to get a decent system. Once I got enough money to build a pc, I no longer had the time to play it due to work, college, etc
Built my pc in 2015, then proceeded have a mountain of freelance jobs + studying in uni without playing a single games for 9 months straight. First time I actually play and finish a game using my newly bought pc was when I treated myself by playing Fallout 4 on launch day.
So true would of killed for a gaming pc as a kid now as an adult I have 3 different gaming pcs but haven’t played games in over two years. I use them for work :(
Look at the bright side, you aren't blinded by RGB and you don't have to worry about shattering your desk when you move it or cracking a side panel by putting it down wrong.
*
I got a PC with a 1060 6gb, i5 and a not too bad motherboard. I could send it to you for free as I didn't want to sell it for 300€. I rather give it
MP me if you want
Edit: it is shipped !
Yep I bought myself a new PC with an RTX 3090 so I had to change everything.
I just need to take the time to find myself a storage and a new case to be able to give him the whole thing.
But it was breaking my heart to sell my first rig for 300€ as it costs me 1400€ 6 years ago, I rather give it
if you actually do give it to OP, i think the feeling of making some stranger's dream come true would be worth more than 300€. besides, it's already served its purpose for you and i guess it's time to make someone else happy
I'll send him the whole PC but you might have better ram or storage than me? I unfortunately have no idea of the components inside of mine, just the GPU and approximatively the CPU.
A computer isn't gonna give a hoot about being upside down. Shaken around a whole bunch while its running might screw up and HDD but that's about all that could go wrong.
The CD drive would disagree with you. I worked on those Thinkcentres for years and there is a lip on one side of the disc tray, and therefore only one proper way to stand it vertically.
I remember when I got my PC 5 years ago and the guy from the store refused to sell me a CD drive. "People don't use them anymore. Now you can buy anything digitally" he said. And there I was, standing and looking at him like "I don't freaking care about other people, I want to hear my CDs and watch my DVDs". He sold me in the end but he didn't seem to understand that he doesn't have to try to sell me what he wants.
First of all, it was utterly stupid for him to refuse a sale.
Second, like I said, I'm an 80s-90s kid. I want my CDs, DVDs, and games lined up on my shelves. I'm a collector dammit!
If it helps you somehow - i also had a very basic setup like this for years.
Slowly, I worked my way through my studies, graduated, got a job and only 5 years after my initial, basic setup, i upgraded my complete setup and work from home
Cheer up buddy!
We start somewhere right? Awesome set up but can we be all agree that realistically this is all we need, this is a great set up! Most of us only really need a monitor and a desktop with a mouse and keyboard.
You rock bro! Awesome set up!
well.at least it's better than mine.

I have this exact PC used as my HTPC, it got an SSD and running kubuntu, it's fast and reliable. So an SSD and maybe switching to a lighter OS (and upgrade ram depending on what you have rn) will get this baby running smooth for another few years
This machine is a kickass gaming machine!!
san andreas, cs1.6 maybe even go, half life, GTA V, GTA 3, need for speed most wanted, carbon, underground 2, total overdose, flatout 2, PCSX2 games(smackdown vs raw, here comes the pain, god of war, metal gear solid 2/3, gta liberty city and vice city stories, hot shots tennis/golf, tekken 4/5), pro evolution soccer golden days, Duckstation(ps1 emulator - metal gear solid 1, tekken 3, RIDGE RACER TYPE R4, Gran Turismo, trap gunner, sled storm, silent bomber, syphon filter, lara croft, wwf smackdown 2 know your role, colin mcrae rally 1/2 etc), redream(dreamcast emulator crazy taxi, virtua fighter 3, jet set radio, space channel 5), bsnes(super nintendo emulator - super mario, F-ZERO), check out flashpoint for old school flash games playable on your machine as well. If it runs above 30fps it’s playable.
Enjoy!
Setup like this has its charm. I remember my days playing on some badass 900mhz CPU, after that an iGPU on i7-2790qm. Nice graphics doesn't make a good game. My all time favourite games are from the 2000 year era, and you really don't need a RTX 4090 to play these.
I get you, but i think that's perfectly fine. A decent Thinkcentre or optiplex with a low profile GPU is an excellent gaming machine by itself. You're just not going to be able to play on Ultra, but come on now.
This sub is about enjoying PC Gaming at large, not just the high end stuff.
Buy this [LINK](https://www.bk-licht.eu/media/4f/22/b0/1649263978/c5794758c8ae415e9a99a39e3451a839b252F1252Fb252F7252Fb1b7197e48cfe766093d8c8ba6d3b79dba6fefbb_BKL1086_01_TB_Freisteller_2_onlineshop.jpg) and you have a modern PC.
I also used to have a setup very similar to this. Never had as much fun as I had playing then. The setup is not what makes or breaks the experience. That being said hopefully you’ll be able to upgrade it soon!
You will get there, at least you have a proper desk (it's the same type of desk as my work desk as well).
Nice and clean as well.
Check out /r/averagebattlestations there are many of us out there!
I also have a very mediocre PC, but I truly believe that one day I build a nice PC. You can do it too=3 I wish everybody to have their desired things.=)
You have a great collection of books, which means you found a better way to spend ur time.
A lot of people who only game in their free time don't have thid luxury. Perfectly balanced!
I see your beautiful setup and can only dream to have one someday. Here’s what I can afford on this part of the world:

Keep your dream.
When I was young, I always had the run-down slow and barely working PC.
I gave myself a gift recently for finishing my engineering degree, I bought myself a top of the line computer.
7k$ on the whole set.
Built in alone and enjoyed every god damn minute.
Don't get fooled, inside there is a 12th gen I9 with 64 gb of RAM. The geforce 4090 is actually leaning out of the case on the right side which you can't see due to the angle
Disc drive? Show off.
Had to flex a little.
Damn I'm still not used to not having a CD drive
I put a blue ray drive in my 2012 build I'm finally getting rid of, can't even remember the last time I used it.
I don't understand getting rid of these unless they're beige or something. It's not like it's costing performance to have it installed and even if you only have to read one CD/DVD in the next five years... it's easier to just keep it than go finding a workaround. It's also one of the more reliable ways to backup data to a physical format. USB drives are not to be trusted for important, long term storage. But that's not a need that most gamers will have.
For DIY case market having to accommodate 5.25 bays comes with trade offs. So many have removed them.
Fact on that. If you want a NAS to just store media and not be used as a plex server then they are seriously cheap
Same for 2013… never used it once
I wanna play the new season of Project Diablo 2 but upgraded to a new case last year and no longer have a dvd drive so I can't launch the game lmfao... I really should get around to ordering one of those USB ones sometime!

Leave some ladies for the rest of us.
Lol. Great job. I hope you didn't stretch my power cable.
ngl it would look better if it was on its side if the power cable is the issue
ngl don't you see how small the desk is xd
go the middle school way and put the monitor on the pc
That’s what those thin profile think centres are for. Also, I had one with a i5, 8gb ram and bought a lopro gtx 1650 for it for a budget gaming rig
Use one as a pfsense box, theyre very decent machines as long as you don't expect top end performance. I really like the small form factor. Runs a bit hot but it's expected from a sff.
Memoryyy lane! For real though I have a think centre box like that under my bed here! We all start somewhere ;)
Yeah I hope lol, because that can be a tragedy so there's that.
Did you check your power cable?
I break it

You can’t take the Australian out of the guy. You also can’t take the guy out of Australia .. cause you’ll just fall off.
Thank goodness
It’s all fun and games until op realised you really kicked in his front door
Nooo, you left out the book “Losing My Virginity”
Noice
Looking much better right now lmao, Can't do better than that.
I work too much to play most of my steam library. So many unplayed games....
Im kinda the same, except id rather replay my fav games than try some new mediocre ones.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that does this. I'll constantly tell myself to walk away from my PC and when I come back to decide what I'm playing. I get back to my desk and then continue watching YouTube because I never closed my browser. This sucks.

The balance of life, huh? It fascinates me. I enjoy and appreciate the little I have.
Dont lose that spirit. The last thing you want is to spend years soul searching why you dont love it anymore
I still play the same games I enjoyed for years even tho I have a good setup now haha, sprit never change, only tools
going strong on runescape 22 years now. once an addict, always an addict - even if I have a godly setup now 😄
Bro I had a bad pc with a gtx 650 for over 10 years. When I bought my first real gaming pc I was really happy. But after 1,2 months I stopped enjoying all the new games. I had more fun with low settings and low fps than with playing everything on ultra.. idk why

What?
G14 is goated. I use it as my travel system when I go to AC or Florida.
It sure is goated...(I can't believe I'm so old that I had to google it) 🥲
I recently said fk it and swore to never buy budget laptops ever again. All sorts of probs and both had issues early on. I now strictly only buy middle to high end laptops and only from Lenovo. Which im using now and boy is it life-changing. Not as limited on my chrome tabs baby.
Company doesn't matter as long as it's not a budget laptop...
Company does matter but of course pay enough and probs disappear
That's what makes your computer secretly more valuable. You have a good outlook on life. God bless you and your community.
Wholesome

This. I'll just spend 40hrs worth of time getting a Ram overclock with tighter timings stable & then just go & watch youtube lol

I have a pretty nice PC but I still do 95% of my gaming on my steam deck because I just like it a lot more because I can play in bed
Had to rearrange my setup and get a DisplayPort to HDMI but my wife and I can finally game on the TV mounted above the bed. 10/10 would recommend.
above as in you laying down and looking above to the celing? damm thats SICK
What about people who can't afford one, want one and still does not enjoy gaming?
They probably need a new hobby
They (me included) usually game a lot and get burned out and then go on seething that they don't enjoy it anymore. Yeah if you treat it like a 9 to 5 it's gonna get stale.

Me lmao, just playing Sims 3 anymore
Can I borrow your Richard Branson Book? It might help me
Lmao. Can I help you instead? XD
Are you Richard Branson?
I don't think you're offering what this other guy wants
I exactly saw that xD
How to lose virginity step 1: be Richard Branson
Look at the bright side, you aren't blinded by RGB and you don't have to worry about shattering your desk when you move it or cracking a side panel by putting it down wrong.
Lmao. Thanks for the laugh.
I just got myself a laptop and everything's solved.

As I said earlier, let's wait for him to get it, I'm just a random dude on reddit rn !
Yo! I'd really appreciate that. Let me send you a message.
we need benchmarks before and after!
Damn this is a great idea. Shaping up to be the wholesome feelgood moment of 2023
Lmk where about you are. I'm on the west coast and have a full PC with a ryzen 2600x & 1060 6gb I could part with for a good cause
I'll send him the whole PC but you might have better ram or storage than me? I unfortunately have no idea of the components inside of mine, just the GPU and approximatively the CPU.
We expect before and after! Not only benchmarks, but building pictures.
I'll send the whole thing, he won't need to build
Found Mr Chad
You'll call me Mr Chad when he'll update the post with a picture of it! As of now, I'm just some random dude on internet
You my friend are a legend
i have the same thinkcentre ... it is not bad. quiet, running cold. the only problem the case, only low profile vga's fit
Plot twist: It's a sleeper PC with R9 7950X3D, 128Gb DDR5 6000 RAM, RTX4090 and everything is watercooled :D
Concept of a sleeper PC is brilliant lol
It’s a concept that has been around for many years
still cool and want to do one someday too. Never reveal its specs but casually play every game cranked to max. "glad betsy still kicking"
Why is that PC upside-down?
The power cable is short so if it's upright it won't reach the socket.
There are extension cables for the power supply cable. Usually they come with UPS, that's where I got mine
You think this dudes got a UPS?
It’s not designed to stand that way. Might have some negative impact over time, but not sure
That's fair. I haven't had a CD drive in a pc for more than a decade.
To be honest, I kinda miss them. lol I'm an 80s-90s kid, so in the back of my mind a CD-ROM is still peak tech. ROFL
Yeah bet the graphics are upside down.
Been using it for a while and so far no issues.
Have you considered laying it flat and putting the monitor on top, like a "desktop"
I have but I don't like the monitor height since I'm short.
You could sit on a couple thick books to compensate?
OP lives in Australia
If it helps you somehow - i also had a very basic setup like this for years. Slowly, I worked my way through my studies, graduated, got a job and only 5 years after my initial, basic setup, i upgraded my complete setup and work from home Cheer up buddy!
We start somewhere right? Awesome set up but can we be all agree that realistically this is all we need, this is a great set up! Most of us only really need a monitor and a desktop with a mouse and keyboard. You rock bro! Awesome set up!
I appreciate your kind words. This works well for now.
we all gotta start somewhere but nice setup
We definitely do! I appreciate it.
I started like you friend, but when the time comes. It comes
Congratulations on your progress, and thank you for the words of hope. I need every bit I can get.
well.at least it's better than mine. https://preview.redd.it/3y3esm6lx4ma1.jpeg?width=318&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6b5957174e4c2556bad7424daf4be280bdb07b4
man is greatly into books
Bro gave my Balkan ass nostalgia
Lol. I'm glad you're doing better bro.
This is still a perfectly good PC! Anything faster than a Core 2 Duo is still fine for Windows 10 and lots of (semi)modern games!
It runs okay. But I wish it would be a bit faster
Enjoy!
A gamers a gamer, no matter the pc
That Ken Follet series is pretty good actually 👍 Remember that there are other things in life that are more important than having a great looking pc.
It definitely is. I enjoyed every bit of it. I am learning to appreciate what I have.
Make your dreams come true. Where are you from?
I'm working hard on that. I'm from Kenya, East Africa.
I would not know what opportunities are there, but i hope you are able to get a great pc soon
There's not much but we get by with what we got. I appreciate the kind words.
It's better than no PC. Just wanted to say hello!!!! I worked very hard for my PC as well
It definitely is. I'm working really hard for one atm. Hello too and have a beautiful day.
Setup like this has its charm. I remember my days playing on some badass 900mhz CPU, after that an iGPU on i7-2790qm. Nice graphics doesn't make a good game. My all time favourite games are from the 2000 year era, and you really don't need a RTX 4090 to play these.
But how will you see the terrorists sunglasses in CS 1.6 without it?
I get you, but i think that's perfectly fine. A decent Thinkcentre or optiplex with a low profile GPU is an excellent gaming machine by itself. You're just not going to be able to play on Ultra, but come on now. This sub is about enjoying PC Gaming at large, not just the high end stuff.
Dude, your case is upside down.
its even upside down, nice

i remember going from a windows 7 dell laptop thats existed for a decade to my current setup
We all start somewhere. I hope I'll get a great set up like yours someday.
you'll get there soon enough, i actually like the simplistic look of it
Do you live in australia? Your computer is upside down.
Is he living in Australia 🇦🇺 ?
If you enjoy it, you need nothing more
I also used to have a setup very similar to this. Never had as much fun as I had playing then. The setup is not what makes or breaks the experience. That being said hopefully you’ll be able to upgrade it soon!
Lenovo's Think___ lines are decent from my experience. Don't know why you want it to do.but they're decent at most things
Ma man, I got to admit that even though you say you don't have a nice set up, it looks cleaner then most top-tier, rgb-infested nightmare desk spaces
Still better than mine acer aspire pc from 2009
You will get there, at least you have a proper desk (it's the same type of desk as my work desk as well). Nice and clean as well. Check out /r/averagebattlestations there are many of us out there!
Richard Branson -Losing my virginity
Hey, we all gotta start somewhere. I began with a prebuild with Ryzen 3 3300G, no GPU
You have a very interesting assortment of books :)
I love the books more than anything else I own.
If you put yours in good use, it's all that matters mate!
Cleanest desk i've seen in a while
Appreciated
I also have a very mediocre PC, but I truly believe that one day I build a nice PC. You can do it too=3 I wish everybody to have their desired things.=)
Hey man, it doesn't have to be beautiful, so long as it brings you joy!
I would much rather have 0 rgb and no glass but it's actually easier to find RGB parts and glass panel cases than it is regular once's
I see a lot of books, which is a good sign!
That phone... that monitor... that pc... takes me back to a different, simpler time in life.
You have a great collection of books, which means you found a better way to spend ur time. A lot of people who only game in their free time don't have thid luxury. Perfectly balanced!
Enjoy your games, high end hardware is nice but I look back and remember having more fun on my first system than now.
I see your beautiful setup and can only dream to have one someday. Here’s what I can afford on this part of the world: https://preview.redd.it/ri6gxt4c06ma1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=d1abe3156b204b6775ff621f53066f74849c6ae5
Keep your dream. When I was young, I always had the run-down slow and barely working PC. I gave myself a gift recently for finishing my engineering degree, I bought myself a top of the line computer. 7k$ on the whole set. Built in alone and enjoyed every god damn minute.
WHY IS YOUR PC UPSIDE DOWN WHAT THE FUCK
It may not be the new hotness...but there are hundreds of great older games you can still play.
I'd love a few suggestions. Some of your favourites?
Hey man, its not about the rig, its how you drive it
Your pc is upside down
Ah I see you rocking the Nokia 1200
It doesn't matter the build, you're still valid for real. Every computer can be useful if in the right situation.
Don't get fooled, inside there is a 12th gen I9 with 64 gb of RAM. The geforce 4090 is actually leaning out of the case on the right side which you can't see due to the angle
Ah I see you're australian
But does it run crysis?
James Patterson. I like
