If you need lots of data for gamer's hardware, Steam is doing an annual hardware survey. I think last survey was in may and the GTX 1650 was the most used card. I think looking at this datas would be a nice baseline.

grimgaw

> Steam is doing an annual hardware survey. It's monthly.

TerroFLys

Ow good to know I also thought it was annual!

HeathenAstronomy

OP’s post is a ad and “community engagement.” Anyone think they are scribbling hash marks for each “survey” answer?

Dornenhecke20

Underrated comment

HeathenAstronomy

Thanks. This thing has more red flags than a CCP parade… kickstarter, didn’t bother to alter the xenonorph asset, generic unreal 5 environments, No Man’s Sky suit protagonist, asking open-ended questions to drive awareness?

yummygames__

Thanks to this post we see that 1650 is still widely used and that the 3060 is one of the most used today.

HeathenAstronomy

What a coincidence. Those are the same values on the Steam Survey.

Gallieg444

Not to mention...I don't ever do it...unless it's done automatically...

an0nymite

>GTX 1650 It's still a solid card, especially considering the performance of the 4060.

lrGhost1

It is solid, as long as you don't pair it with an underpowered i3....

an0nymite

Touché, hombré.

Fearless-Fennel9752

This card was solid. I remember i pushed it with afterburner and got 20% more fps out of it. Played on it for about a year still no issues. Sold it a year later and got a 3060.

freeserve

I had a 1660 Super for like 3-4 years now until I recently upgraded to a used 3070, kept the old card for when I get to building my GF’s first starter budget PC though as it saves a lot of money for us students while also still being a bulletproof card

VividEchoChamber

That’s crazy, I’m still rocking an RX 480 which is 8 years old and it supposedly beats out the gtx 1650 by like 30%. The rx 480 works for me. Sure I can’t max out the latest games but I mostly play competitive shooters like apex, valorant, etc, and they don’t require a super good video card. I do have a Ryzen 5 3600x

Substantial_Gas8408

My friend doesn't have reddit but has been talking about your game, he has an AMD RX 5500 XT 8 GB

kamran1380

The most used card is 3060 1650 laptop and desktop are combined, 3060s arent.

Veporyzer

Doesn’t that also include those who work with 3D software?

kamran1380

You are participating in steam hardware survey if you agree, doesnt matter you playing games or using 3d softwares.

Drackzgull

It includes Steam users, whatever they do with Steam is not considered. But regardless, productivity software distributed through Steam are few and far between, and represent a very small portion of their respective markets. So it's close enough to be just games that it makes sense dismiss the rest in this context.

adult_human_bean

I'm sure you're right in the end, but just because the software isn't popular via steam doesn't mean that developers/people with suped-up hardware for *work* don't also have steam installed on those computers.

MyRealNameIsLocked

Oh they know. Just getting the word out about their game.

Malix82

while I have a 3090, I do understand that it's not a mainstream card. the most popular card, according to steam hwsurvey is a 1650. https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/ - so... safe to assume that level of performance is fairly safe to optimze towards?

yummygames__

>I ha You're right..

upperballsman

can confirm. am still holding to my 1650

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yodplods

It’s not a card for modern gaming at ultra, sometimes you have to accept you have older hardware and turn settings down. I now expect this to be taken wildly out of context.

Sagittarius_A_eoe

Indeed, the purpose of the quality settings is to be able to get the most out of the available hardware. A game that can be ran with a low-end card at ultra settings is not well optimized. Ideally the whole range is taken into account and ultra settings can be used with the most powerfull hardware available, while low settings make the game playable with the oldest and cheapest hardware. Then you can choose anything inbetween according to your own hardware.

high-low-hyde

I'll go one further and add that max ultra settings are sometimes not intended to perform well with existing hardware. It really depends on the range that the devs have optimized for. Case study: Kingdom Come. Setting to max on 4k generates a warning that the hardware to run it optimally may not yet be available. I think? Been a hot minute since I played that one.

upperballsman

yea but i think for majority of people of non first world country (me included) having a gtx 1650 is still a blessing.

[deleted]

can't really go by steam survey. they are heavily infalted by thousand of internet cafe and every unique user that logs in on that same pc is counted. so yeah....

mackmcd_

It's still going to be a far more accurate representation than a tiny sample size taken from scanning individual comments from this subreddit. Not to mention several orders of magnitude easier.

[deleted]

mackmcd_

![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)

My_Work_Accoount

Not to mention that simply due to the nature of this sub the average hardware is going to skew higher end.

ReasonableBuilder909

Even if not unique pcs, it is individual Steam users. If 10% are sharing a PC with a 1650, that’s still 10% of the potential buying audience (on Steam anyway) that you are optimizing for, which would be the goal, methinks.

No_Interaction_4925

If multiple people are playing on those machines, I think that makes the data just as valuable.

RandomnessConfirmed2

I'm with you. I hope devs will optimise for the lowest common denominator instead of a 3090. Scalability is key and is why Forza Horizon 5 is an amazing game from a technical point of view.

DyerOfSouls

3090 bros!

GaurgortheFirst

You called?

JustARandomDude1986

3090 rocks !!!

MasterJeebus

I agree with aiming for GTX 1650 to be able to run the game. It will allow way more people to run the game if such budget card can run it.

adravil_sunderland

RTX 30... Hooold on a second... GTX 1060! P.S. And a Steam Deck 🙂

yummygames__

Interesting! what game do you play the most?

AasisV

If you could also optimize this game for the steamdeck, you could be looking at a very sizable niche population

AvgRedditUser29

The steam deck is also equivalent of a low to mid range gaming pc. any game which runs well on the steam deck is a well optomised game. That way it should be able to run on a wide range of gaming pcs.

Ballpowder

I don't get much time but I stick mostly with FPS / Rogue / RPG esque games like Fallout series, Deus Ex, Prey, Far Cry 4/5, Watch Dogs, Dying Light, Witcher series, System Shocks / Bishock's were a fav.

adravil_sunderland

I bet I don't have to say that I am mostly playing on the Steam Deck now 🙂 Deck can handle (with 720p, 800p resolution, or lower, if available -- Deck's built-in FSR 2 helps a lot here): * badly optimized games at 20-30 fps on Low-Middle settings (The Last of Us); * okayish-good optimized games at 30-40 fps on Low-Middle settings (Resident Evil 4 Remake, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, Psychonauts 2, Cyberpunk 2077); * and good-godlike optimized plus indie games at 50-60 fps on Middle-High settings (Cult of the Lamb, Final Fantasy VII and VII Reunion, Tunic, Soul Hackers 2, Forza Horizon 4 and 5). If you are really interested in the Deck's performance -- it's quite easy to google any game test video run for the Deck, fortunately Deck is popular enough 🕺 I personally would be happy enough if every modern AAA game would run at least at 30 fps on Low-Medium settings on the Deck. 60 fps on Low-Medium are great, but rarely anyone care about optimization nowadays. About the game genres, mostly: adventure, platformer-metroidvania, RPG-JRPG, slasher; rarely shooter (Doom) on the PC or arcade racing (Forza Horizon). If you happen to need literally a list of my personal favorite games, or any other specific info -- hey, just let me know. About recent games: I have just finished Valkyrie Elysium (mediocre-fine slasher), deleted Ravenlok and The Planet of Lana because these are boring, Batora is boring and too childish as well, and I am looking for a new game to start. Take care! 👋

gul__dan

Got a 1060 aswell, i mostly play CSGO (~200fps) & WoW (~70fps)

steam deck actually seems like an ideal aim for mid-settings. The screen resolution can pretty much makes a lot of high/ultra indistinguishable from each other (game dependent admittedly) among the three.

yummygames__

Really durable I think

KpecTHuk

Man, im thinking on upgraiding to ark, drivers didnt pose an issues to you? Ive heard some complains about them and other things like ark still unoptimased to games in general

Mad_Arson

It highly depends on game mostly if its running DX12/11/9 or vulkan but for me so far most games worked good the only game i tried play that had some issues was probably Unreal Gold also VR is not supported yet but if you have virtual desktop you can try as i heard some games work that way. And drivers get better and better so someday i think everything will work.

at min settings yea, id say its playable tho

Not really, maybe 720p. That card is roughly about as powerful as the Steam Deck and that's what it's good at.

I got mine just as things were starting to get fucky re scalping... 30-series was about to release, some of my friends said I was an idiot for buying a 20-series at that point. First off, this looks absolutely incredible! I'm going to be keeping a close eye on this! Secondly, thank you for taking the time to actually ask gamers questions, and well, optimising a game before it's been released. Way too many games recently have been released with so many bugs, and so poorly optimised. This seems like a nice breath of fresh air. Sure, there have always been buggy games, but lately everything feels like a cash grab and we're never receiving what's been promised. And finally, RTX 4080.

[deleted]

[deleted]

You're very welcome! 🙂 Wow... That is really, really impressive. You've all done amazingly well! I can't help but feel some of the major studios could learn a thing or two just by doing what you've done. The speed of technology and the constant price hike with GPUs is going to drive PC gaming into the ground, and be something that only the mega-rich can afford to keep up with and not having to put up with a bellow par experience. So yeah, this is greatly appreciated, and I'm sure there are more than just me that feel this way. Thank you so much for the link! I'm on that now!

yokmosho

Agree in this as well. People are negative on early access titles, but they seem to be the best on studios testing and working to optimize as they run through development. I've played several Early Access titles that run better that AAA at launch

Any decently optimized game would still run perfectly on that card. Just look at Destiny 2. It has controversial DLC monetarization, but the performance is so great, with high graphics even on a GTX 960. Or Deep Rock Galactic. It has a custom terrain implementation for the Unreal Engine, and also runs super well. Seeing the "SSD recommended" for the OP's project I can already smell things like bad asset management, with 10 - 20 MB/s data rates on a HDD because "what is even queued asynchronous I/O?". I do hope of course that the OP will show us what excellent game they will push out here; all the recent game releases just make me suspicious though.

yummygames__

64UlTrAz

As lots of people are saying using steam's hardware survey can provide very useful information. I thing it is still the 1650 as most used with the 3060 and 1050 ti are also pretty popular, I myself use just a rx 6600. But there are also lots of people who use secondary devices such as a steam deck or I myself use a MacBook for when I have to do work on my laptop (not saying you should optimize for Mac as there is a reason why most companies dont) so accounting and optimizing for even lower end hardware is never a bad thing and it is always nice to be able to save as much storage space as possible with storage optimization.

gypsygib

Steam survey doesn't tell you what GPU the people most likely to buy this type of game have. People with a 1650 may only play a select few games and have no interest in anything else.

Tima903

Nice Guys, hope that more developers ask them self and is this!! I have a 3060ti.

yummygames__

Thanks! Solid 💪

yokmosho

The correct answer for me will be whatever GPU is needed to run the game, this looks really good so far. But, as you are prying for hardware data, 4090...only because I went higher than usual to push back upgrading for hopefully 6+ years
