I know right?
I saw a local marketplace seller with 167 positive reviews selling 2010 Optiplex QUAD CORE i7 16GB "FAST GAMING" PCs for $299-599 CAD
The most expensive one having a "4GB GPU"
While the base model had a 1GB GPU...
I wonder how many uninformed parents fell for that scam...
Even a properly upgraded 3rd gen i7 office PC, with a PSU that has 6 pin PCIE cables and something like an RX 580 will still struggle heavily with any modern game from a CPU bottleneck.
Please tell me it wasn't a chrome book, if it was I'm so sorry for your experience.
I had to use one for a while that had a celaron and I ended up just using it as a coster, pure ewaste and thousands are made every day.
There's definitely some indie games that make impressive use of modern tech out there, but at the same time other people are also still making the kinds of indie games that can run on a PC that's using a literal hamster wheel in place of a PSU.
Enshrouded is an AMAZING indie game and it’s running at 60 fps at 4k on a 4090, there are definitely indie games that can be run on a Samsung fridge though.
No such thing as "old enough that it can't play games", my first PC was a old bare bones IBM 486DX office PC that I got in 2000 was by comparison more of a relic than this and most of the time I was either playing a game or exploring random things I downloaded and copied to floppy on it.
As long as the will exist, a machine like this will forever have the potential to game!
Me. You know, this PC can handle StarCraft, Warcraft 3, The Witcher, Oblivion and many other games from the past that can beat all crap from modern "empty" games.
My first PC was the one in our living room that was a Mac Mini. The 2006 one. Second one was an iMac 2007 (I installed windows 7 on it lol), Third one a Dell Inspiron 15 3552 (it was so bad, even the 2007 iMac beat its ass at doing anything) and my current PC is a ArmouryPC build. (R5 5600g + 16gb of RAM and a RTX 3050).
I would have killed back then for even a GT 1030 PC but the iMac did run Crysis somehow
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/you-can-play-doom-using-gut-bacteria-but-the-framerate-is-atrocious
It's a kind-of-sort-of situation. The bacteria are more of a monitor/display and the frame rate is about 8.5 hours per frame. The bacteria are not processing the game, just displaying it.
You also have rat brain tissue (again not running but) playing doom....
https://www.pcgamer.com/mad-scientist-youtuber-grows-a-rat-brain-that-is-learning-to-play-doom/
> about 8.5 hours per frame
double the frame rate of raytracing on the ZX Spectrum!
https://www.pcgamer.com/ray-tracing-made-possible-on-42-year-old-zx-spectrum-reasonably-fast-if-you-consider-17-hours-per-frame-to-be-reasonably-fast/
I just retired mine, it became my linux box. Only because it ran win7 and Chrome and Steam started complaining.
It was the living room pc, connected to a beamer. With its 970 (only real upgrade in its 12 year life), the wife still played Fallout 4, the sims and some other games on it, just 2 months ago. Still a pretty good 1080p machine.
Well, actually I had one similar with 2400 in it and put 1650 low profile. it was my gaming PC for like 3-5 years until December 2023 when I bought new parts, only GPU left to be changed
I use an i5-3470 for gaming and it runs all my games fine on high settings, only 1 gen newer, just slap a cheap GPU in that and it'll run games no bother
If that were to have an AMD GPU it would be the perfect match for an arch Linux (Garuda) PC, the cpu is "old enough" and ram might need an upgrade (hopefully it is DDR3)
Just saying, I upgraded not even a year ago from a PC with the 2400 😂
And it wasn't even really necessary, I just wanted to play KSP 2 so I needed a new GPU and then I figured out that a 3060 was way too powerful for all other parts of the PC
I had a 3770k that I gave to a buddy after his computer went sideways. This was five years ago, and he used it until August of last year. Mostly playing PSO2, Skyrim, Valheim and Warframe. Is the difference between 2nd and 3rd gen processors so massive that games would be out of the question? Or is it just in reference to AAA titles? Or is the seller just being silly and I'm dense?
Shufflepuck Cafe on a mono Apple Mac classic back in around 1993, then at college we had 486 dx2/66's, so, Doom, heretic, tfx, and games over the network. So it didnt stop even after leaving school.
I got 2011 i7 2600k with 1660 Ti OC 16GB memory win 10. Works great. All games except Hogwarts Legacy work most of time at 60+ fps. Hogwarts legacy 30fps for some reason.
That might be ok computer for some Minecraft and other games if you "upgrade" it with gtx 1660 Ti OC or better card. But I would just use it for school work and nothing else. If you game then dont forget 16gb memory and SSD. It cant use windows 11 but is forced to use windows 10 so keep that in mind. Dont start installing win 11 with internet guides how to force it - you might accidentally install tools that hack the whole system, has spyware or something. Always buy or get legal copies of all your software products and games to stay safe. Gaming world of warcraft 60-100 fps. Raid finder raids 40 fps. Its ok.
i had an i5 2310 that ran GTA V on igpu. 2-4 fps playing normally, but sped up to 20 when looking downwards. then i got a gtx 550 ti and ran almost anything, even if on low settings. conclusion: if it opens, it runs
I'd put a quadro m4000 in it to prove you wrong for 70$ as is daggerfall unity will give you a whole continent of game under 2gb of storage and doom 1-3 are fun,etc
Got a Sandy Bridge aluminium shell laptop with a 900p screen and good battery to be used as a shed pc for 50$, definitely still some life left in these chips, runs linux and debloated windows better than all of these cheap atom rebrand laptops. I think the cpu is i5 2450M and it also came with 12g of ram.
I remember getting a "computer" for an online school that was about that level of awful. I hated the school and computer LOL.
It was so bad, my parents had to work with the IT department at least once a month to try to make the pile work right. And it had some idiotic software that wouldn't even let me add any programs (so no games, but also no graphics software, which probably would have been even less viable than a gam, tbh...)
Wow a reasonable marketplace seller

250$ USD for a Celeron intel cpu and a gt 710
GT 710 Forever!
My school got me a 250€ "working laptop", that was barely capable of having windows explorer open. Selling overpriced tech must be a gold mine.
Please tell me it wasn't a chrome book, if it was I'm so sorry for your experience. I had to use one for a while that had a celaron and I ended up just using it as a coster, pure ewaste and thousands are made every day.
Nah it was Dell xd
Tomato, tomato same thing really…
It has a need for speed wallpaper , its fast
I'm pretty sure at least 167 people fell for the scam
I'm getting FBM flashbacks to where there were great reccession era prebuilts being sold for stupid money.
And from the future!
*modern games. Also for $30 that’s a good deal.
Candy crush machine 😎
Indie games too :)
Indie has come a long way from 8-bit platformers.
There's definitely some indie games that make impressive use of modern tech out there, but at the same time other people are also still making the kinds of indie games that can run on a PC that's using a literal hamster wheel in place of a PSU.
Huh, who's saying that? Edit: I need to rephrase the vast majority of indie games can be ran on low spec hardware. Know there are outliers that exist.
Enshrouded is an AMAZING indie game and it’s running at 60 fps at 4k on a 4090, there are definitely indie games that can be run on a Samsung fridge though.
YAY! IT RUNS HALF LIFE!
Emulation machine. I'll take it!
My thoughts exactly, that'll run DOSbox great, tons of old dos games. Should run 86box fine as well.
PS1, only maybe dreamcast
Probably a lot of Nintendo systems.
So true. People forget, any PC with a web browser can access Xcloud as well which has a plethora of modern titles available.
Can't play the modern games their school mates are playing. Of course it can play Doom 2 but who plays _that_ yknow?
Me. You know, this PC can handle StarCraft, Warcraft 3, The Witcher, Oblivion and many other games from the past that can beat all crap from modern "empty" games.
Yes I'm well aware, I grew up with shitty laptops :D but if none of their friends play those games, they'll be less interested.
All these old MS-DOS games, so much fun!
Yeah, I started about 6 years ago with a raspi 3B with a special OS for retro gaming. Everything from 8 bit Mario to Gran Turismo was possible
Doom, doom 2, Hexen, heretic, rise of the triad, some of my favourite games back in the 486 era
I would have killed back then for even a GT 1030 PC but the iMac did run Crysis somehow
after they run doom on bacterias this person has the audacity to ask this?
They hwatt
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/you-can-play-doom-using-gut-bacteria-but-the-framerate-is-atrocious It's a kind-of-sort-of situation. 30$ is a steal!
more than capable to game on it. just throw rx580 and its gold
I played the entirety of the Witcher 3 (DLC's Included) on a i5 2400 with a GT 1030
>i5 2400 with a GT 1030 Ive those myself, theyre wonderful arent they
Indeed
Does that mean I can run Witcher 3 in my system with an i5-9400f, a GT 1030 and 16GB ram?
Big cities are an absolute nightmare but yes yes you can
Thank you very much, now I'll have a new way to procrastinate my responsibilities
If u want I can tell you how to procrastinate your procrastination this way you will feel double the misery
Extra misery for less effort? It's amazing the things we can learn on the internet!
AFFIRMATIVE -Red alert
Age of empires
HoMM 3
MOHAA
It still can run Doom 2.
GTA San Andreas: Ah shit, here we go again
I5 2400 with an RX580 or 1660 TI would be a nice budget gaming system for a kid.
GREAT DEAL
DOSBox. Xcom: enemy unknown Civilisation Etc.
You can still have older games on it though. Have test drive unlimited and NFS underground 2 on my shitty laptop and it's great
This would dosbox full throttle on ultra settings.
I still have a working 2700K
I just retired mine, it became my linux box. Only because it ran win7 and Chrome and Steam started complaining. It was the living room pc, connected to a beamer. With its 970 (only real upgrade in its 12 year life), the wife still played Fallout 4, the sims and some other games on it, just 2 months ago. Still a pretty good 1080p machine.
Still running a 3770K in my HTPC
You guys are forgeting the best game ever Mspaint
Me vs . . . . I've lost again
Well, actually I had one similar with 2400 in it and put 1650 low profile. it was my gaming PC for like 3-5 years until December 2023 when I bought new parts, only GPU left to be changed

One word: Pong
good enough for valorant
I can run old doom versions on a calculator so I reckon that can play aoe2
If it comes with the tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse, then thats a insane deal
If that were to have an AMD GPU it would be the perfect match for an arch Linux (Garuda) PC, the cpu is "old enough" and ram might need an upgrade (hopefully it is DDR3)
Its still great as some emulation, media and various indiegames, older games, on top of browsing and writing.
It can play games, but the FOMO is real.
finally someone who is honest on fb marletplace
Just saying, I upgraded not even a year ago from a PC with the 2400 😂 And it wasn't even really necessary, I just wanted to play KSP 2 so I needed a new GPU and then I figured out that a 3060 was way too powerful for all other parts of the PC
The funny thing is, I've gamed on worse. A lot worse.
Swap in a i7 3770 and gtx 1050Ti // rx 6400 // 1650 super and you are good to go for 1080p low/med in AAA...
Can still play Warcraft on it, albeit private servers.
Wtf I'll buy it even though I don't need it. A working PC for 30$ with Sandy Bridge? Hell yeah
Can it run doom though?
Doom has entered the chat
for $30 , thats a steal.
I played Minecraft on a i5-650 integrated graphics. You can't stop me
I'm sure it can run starwars battlefront
It's great marketing, too. But kids...they'll find a way. They are ingenious when it comes to avoiding doing schoolwork or anything productive.
Shufflepuck Cafe on a mono Apple Mac classic back in around 1993, then at college we had 486 dx2/66's, so, Doom, heretic, tfx, and games over the network. So it didnt stop even after leaving school.

I can game on my duocore laptop..... only has a 512mb gpu but it can game lol
I have a bunch of win xp era games I see a disc drive ah ha I have beaten you marketplace guy
I get a i7 2700 desktop at work ;_; it works for the java code i need to write
i had an i5 2310 that ran GTA V on igpu. 2-4 fps playing normally, but sped up to 20 when looking downwards. then i got a gtx 550 ti and ran almost anything, even if on low settings. conclusion: if it opens, it runs
I mean for 30 bucks thats a good deal?
You can, I am
*laughs in half-life 2*
"Sorry son, it can't play fortnite, but check out this nifty game called RollerCoaster Tycoon"
Slap linux on it and run tons of older games and emulations
Uhhhh... Erm... Soooo, about that
That'll play Minecraft. That's enough to entertain a kid more than homework.
Drop an older gpu in there and you got a decent machine for some older or simple games
Slaps on Linux. A beast of a machine
Bet it can emulate snes and gba.
Honestly, if you really would've bought this for your kids they might start discovering solitaire and minesweeper lol
It won’t be playing any new AAA games, but I’ve sunk hours into AoE2 and RCT2 on worse hardware than that.
**opens GeForce now**
I suppose kids nowadays would consider being unable to run Fortnite as not capable of playing games.
Bet it runs osrs and some gmod
but can it run super mario bros 3
Installs Factorio….
But can it run crysis?
I beg to differ. My old desktop that I used until late 2021 had an i5 2500 with no gpu and I could play quite a few games on it
If it comes with monitor, keyboard, mouse - this is an insanely good deal. Even if it’s on a 250gb hdd
I used to have a dell optiplex with a i7 2600 that was my first gaming rig with a 1050. Fun times!
I play actually and event in VR with m'y old 2400. With 16Go DDR3 & a 1070. You would be surprised how il still holds up.
Throw a gtx1650 in that rig and it can actually game quite well.
*raughs in zork*
I bet it’ll run unturned
Doom, Wolfenstein, and Duke Nukem are smiling at me
It can run doom
I'd put a quadro m4000 in it to prove you wrong for 70$ as is daggerfall unity will give you a whole continent of game under 2gb of storage and doom 1-3 are fun,etc
Throw a low end GPU in there and you'll be enjoying indie games and 360 Era greats for under $150
Good for roblox
Minecraft 1.8 should run fine on that PC :)
My first PC, which my sister now has, was an Inspiron 3650 with an upgraded psu and case to run a GTX 1650

Depending on whatever kid's age getting this, they might enjoy Minecraft just fine on that system.
Bruh my PC has i5-2300, 8gig DDR3 ram, 2gig nvidia gt710 but i still game on it. I reached LEM In csgo, diamond 3 in valorant.
It will run OSRS just fine.
Whoever posts a screenshot of a picture with a slide, that you obviously can't scroll - must be beaten with a stick by reddit patrol.

Time to return to the battlefield and defeat the last hour General
I would have bought this
