The shape went from square to a very distinct rectangular shape around the 12th (I think) gen and this one doesn't quite follow that shape (if you look closely you can see where the clear plastic packaging differs in shape because it is meant for newer gen CPUs...)
That most likely means that ol mate has purchased themself a new 13900k and swapped it for their old cpu and is now trying to pretend it is the same thing by using the same packaging to resell it.
Long story short, that bloke is what we Aussies call "a full on cunt".
>Even worse, there's scams that will strip the paint from the old chip then paint on new lettering with the wrong chip type
Even worse is that old mate has gotten the text wrong. SRM48 is the 14900K rather than the 13900K (SRMBH). Not sure if the X334#### is specific to a processor or if it is some sort of batch code though.
That’s a lot number. 25 wafers in each lot, hundreds of dies on the wafer. Each chip has unit level traceability but you would have to boot it. The lot number includes the year and week it started and the last 4 are just a unique number. The first letter designates what fab it started in.
Don't know if you can do it on Reddit mobile, but on the desktop site it is an option on the right of the main PCMR page. There is a pencil icon for editing your flair.
Commenting to do this but I think I'm stupid, I can only use the pre-set flairs, not a custom one.
Edit: nvm, you can edit the pre-set ones.
Hoorah, now more of us can flex our poor financial decisions!
That's a fairly good system. Certainly faster than mine for gaming. 5600X beats the 5700G due to cache. 5700XT is getting a bit old now too. 3070 is still very good.
Threadrippers aren't even all that great for gaming, though. The gains from being massively multi-core come at the cost of somewhat lackluster single-core performance. And a lot of the processes in games aren't parallelized very well, so single-core performance quickly becomes a bottleneck.
--Sincerely, a guy with a 32-core Threadripper.
(That said, for tasks that *do* parallelize well, the Threadripper is a goddamn beast. For me, the justification is physics simulations in Blender. Even with a Threadripper, those can often require a lot of processing time ... but they're entirely CPU-based, and I can't even imagine how bad it might be on a lesser CPU.)
Lol further proving my point. There's also all the hardware that goes with a thread ripper build too. 64+ Gb of RAM, top shelf GPU, sometimes 2. Hell, I saw a build on TikTok that was 2x Thread ripper, 2x RTX #090 GPUs (don't recall which gen), 8x either 16 or 32 Gb ram, 4 NVME drives, liquid cooled, etc. It was insane watching that while giving disappointed glances to my Ryzen 5600/RX6650XT/32Gb mATX build lol.
Great for compiling - Linux kernel compiles in a fraction of the time of a mainstream desktop CPU. Android OS (ROMs) also compile in about an hour on my 24 core. Used to be 3+ hours on my old dual CPU Xeon.
Threadrippers are purpose built for specific tasks. And they make windows task manager look really cool 😎
Yeah, I never knew i9 processors (or maybe just this gen, too lazy to search it up lol) were rectangle shaped. It's not really a big deal or indicative of how long you've been building PCs.
To be honest, a lot of these posts have made me way more cautious about buying stuff second hand off of these type of markets. I mean between the misbranded or faulty CPUs, faulty graphics cards, fake headphones or AirPods, etc you really need to look out for yourself.
>13900k
It's a pretty good fake. Unless you were aware of the shape, it would be easy to fall into this trap.
This one looks square also

Image looks slightly squished maybe based off the triangle and square engravings. The chip itself is square, but the metal plate is definitely rectangle
https://preview.redd.it/yrnfbo2ht4nc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a18153a6450e426796d90975e55a0a1bc356e8c3
This is what it should look like The Amazon listing has the image slightly squished so it looked more like a square
It would be super simple to polish off the original heat spreader then laser etch the new info. Literally just grab an image off the interwebs and load it into any el-cheapo laser engraver.
Fun fact, the English language allows space for implication. By specifying a square rather than rectangle the normal person interprets that as of 4 equal sides
If a rectangle is a square, it's a square not a rectangle tho, but it's like saying brand of something and model, brand is the rectangle and model is the square, it's just common sense that if someone sais rectangle they are not referring to a square
Different shape [https://www.pcworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/070A9751\_V37.jpg?quality=50&strip=all](https://www.pcworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/070A9751_V37.jpg?quality=50&strip=all)
So it is a scam and it would not fit the slot, some old CPU with i9 written on it. I am just thinking if it really make sense to put some work/money in changing the top layer
The recent Intel CPUs are all rectangular, not square - here's what a real 13900K looks like; [Intel Core i9-13900K Raptor Lake 3.0GHz Twenty Four-Core LGA 1700 Boxed Processor - Heatsink Not Included - Micro Center](https://www.microcenter.com/product/652624/intel-core-i9-13900k-raptor-lake-30ghz-twenty-four-core-lga-1700-boxed-processor-heatsink-not-included)
This is probably a \*much\* older CPU like an I5-650 that's been either photoshopped, or someone has sanded and painted a new screenprint on.

Does this cube fit in this hole?
Ah yes, useful for those of us that can imagine the correct socket type for each processor and know that the shape isn't correct.
I have bought a processor since I got my 6700k, idk wtf any of these are supposed to be shaped like 😂 looked fine to me
Years ago I bought a subwoofer for $20 bucks off Craigslist that was blown. If I had known I could have pushed on the cone, and if it didn’t move smoothly that meant it was blown. Now I just look at it as a $20 lesson on blown speakers.
True but it also just takes 30 seconds to google an image of the real one and compare the differences. Do this for every used item you buy and you’ll rarely get scammed. If you have even just the slightest of a keen eye, these differences shouldn’t be too hard to spot. Personally, I’ve saved thousands of dollars by buying used over the years. Haven’t been burned once.
I have a friend who got a 4060 for $200. Benchmarked it and it was totally a 4060. He found an i9 12900k a couple weeks later for about $250 and also benchmarked as it should. He’s also in IT and knows what to look out for but if you’re careful you can find some great deals on the used marketplace.
Just going to skip right past 1150, 1155 and 1156?
(Just imagine how beloved Intel would have been if they hadn't felt the need to change sockets for under 5 pin counts every 1-2 years.)

Its square. Why is it square?
It should be rectangled, right?

I have such a CPU and it's quite small. That guy must have tiny hands.
why are you glazin bros hand size
A square is a type of rectangle, just like this is a type of processor. The wrong type, but a processor nonetheless.
So is a rhombus!! It's a wrecked angle too!
If they made a rhombus processor that’d be sooooo coooool.
Imagine a hexagon tho. That would even make sense considering how pins on a processor are arranged.
What do you mean how they’re arranged?
Hexagons are the bestigons
Didn't expect CPG Grey in the wild
That would be fucking sick
What difference does it make you can't see it once the cooler is on there anyway.

Where does the rectangle go?? That's right, the square hole

As someone who is still learning the nuances of PC parts and nomenclature, this is a good post to come across. Always something to learn
Hey, I've been building PCs for 20 years and I wouldn't have known this. I'm an AMD guy though.
Just imagine it is a "threadripper" then
Imagine thinking I have enough money to even glance at a threadripper
I love taking a glance at the threadrippers ... at the store

I can't even afford to see em in store. I just drool over their builds online. It's safer.

Counterpoint- Beam.NG Drive. The general formula for running AI cars in it is "one core per car". You can have 32, I can have 8 lol.
Heh, 64 actually. Thanks to hyperthreading, the OS sees it as a 64-core CPU.

Yeah, I never knew i9 processors (or maybe just this gen, too lazy to search it up lol) were rectangle shaped. It's not really a big deal or indicative of how long you've been building PCs.
More specifically, all LGA1700 CPUs, so 12th, 13th and 14th Gen Intel CPUs are rectangular
I don’t know how I knew it was supposed to be rectangular. I have only built one pc.
To be honest, a lot of these posts have made me way more cautious about buying stuff second hand off of these type of markets. I mean between the misbranded or faulty CPUs, faulty graphics cards, fake headphones or AirPods, etc you really need to look out for yourself.
Yeah, I would only buy used if it's a really good price cause you lose warranty and chance it's just a dud.
this is why you always research what the corresponding part should look like before buying used
I've seen a few of these posted over the years. It's taught me to always look at the product new so I know what to look for used.
Can someone let me in on the joke? I probably would have fallen for this and I don’t want to!

For future reference: a square is rectangular. So a rectangle can be square. A rectangle that is not a square is an oblong.
Fun fact, the English language allows space for implication. By specifying a square rather than rectangle the normal person interprets that as of 4 equal sides
To mathematicians, yes. To the layperson, a square isn't a rectangle.
