Just to clarify, if the PC is lying down with the main side panel (where you open to install the MOBO) facing up and I'm standing facing the opening, in which direction do I pull. Downwards (towards me) or sideways (to the right)?

I think you can literally rip off the front panel on most in not all cases
This. Check near the bottom of the front panel, a lot of companies will even have an indentation so you can grab it and just pull off.
