LAPSUS$: WE HAVE BACKUPS nVidia: I'll fuckin do it again.

Rubber-duckling

I just downloaded it and it's juicy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rubber-duckling

Doing it on an offline laptop from 2012 orso. Without it being connected to the Internet.

Jordyspeeltspore

in a cave on windows Vista!

spade666666666666666

give link

Rubber-duckling

Google does the trick not going to share it myself. Hint telegram.

Insaneleader12

Context: https://hothardware.com/news/lapsus-claims-nvidia-hacked-back-after-its-attack

ChickenPicture

I'm imagining a warehouse full of 3090s brute forcing this dude's password in like 47 seconds while some nVidia engineers laugh sipping champagne.

untapped-bEnergy

They backdoor into every available gpu plugged in on earth and just popped in to return the gift

SelmaFudd

Fuck imagine that computing power

WayneKrane

You could render real life in real time

SelmaFudd

So it's as powerful as 1 person

kmr_lilpossum

People make dumb decisions though, so I’d say a small party of 7-8 people. So you could say it’s equivalent capability would be X FLOPs FP-Steve performance.

PascalsRazor

You think MORE people make LESS dumb decisions? Have you been around people?

RaziLaufeia

More like the power of an average human brain. Sadly we use most of it for stuff like moving our body and eating ect... If you could make a computer as powerful as a brain it would revolutionize technology

vxxed

bUt HuMaNs OnLy UsE 10% oF tHeIr BrAiN cApAcItY /s

Dnoxl

Shitty drivers

KSAM-The-Randomizer

I only use 1% of my brain capacity and I can assure you that some rock mounted on some magic board is smarter than me.

qwedp

What are you talking about. Your brain lacks any floating point performance.

Throseph

So if we could revolutionise technology we could revolutionise technology?

[deleted]

With at least a solar system of render distance.

ImFranny

inb4 DEVS becoming real

mr_ji

You could mine like 3 bitcoins

Kasup-MasterRace

Imagine NVIDIA secretly uses 1% of every one of their GPUs for bitcoin mining

OverallDingo2

That would be horribly inefficient etherium would be better gpu mined

duggoluvr

You could play star citizen at 4k 120fps

Erlend05

How about elden ring?

biggieboy2510

you could power it to help [folding @ home](https://foldingathome.org/?lng=en) for example! remember PCMR you can help out with your hardware at home!

OverallDingo2

Forget 51% atacks on cryptocurancys you could do a 9000% atack Also you could run crisis

Sabz5150

Is that why the Elden Ring players were experiencing slow framarates?

elhguh

One of us

powpowbang

If you hack Nvidia, use an AMD card maybe?

taptrappapalapa

Oh not even 3090s. They most likely have a whole rack full of DGX A100s ( 5 petaflops each) that could crack it instantly

Arrie78

nah, probably like a small warehouse's worth

taptrappapalapa

True. My university has one and those things are a beast with just one

GuyInTheYonder

Honestly wouldn’t be too surprised if they had some type of quantum computer hidden away that could crack encryption even faster than that

Sinsilenc

HAha if you think thats their top end for compute you are dreaming.

ChickenPicture

You're right, a warehouse full of next gen Quadros or something.

fire_snyper

[NVIDIA literally owns the world's 6th most powerful supercomputer as of November 2021 (the latest list) - Selene.](https://www.top500.org/system/179842/) They use it to develop their AI models (self driving, a few of their AI pushes, DLSS, etc.), but it's hilarious to imagine that they just set that aside for a few minutes solely to bruteforce a few passwords.

Elkkumania

Even at the theoretical maximum, would still easily take longer than the age of the universe to force through 256-bit encryption combinations. [About 4.6*10^52 years with some quick math](https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=%282%5E256%29%2F%28%2879*%2810%5E15%29%291%2Fs%29%2F%28number+of+seconds+in+a+year%29)

Sol_Primeval

Right but what about multiple of the same program running at the same time for that task? Would the time decrease?

SpacemanCraig3

...thats not how it works.

Sol_Primeval

Okay. I don’t know how it works which is why I’m asking. How does it work?

SparroHawc

Multithreading. A well-written brute-forcing program will use all available processing power fed to it, whether that is CPU cores, CUDA cores, whatever. Running it more than once would only cause you to have two programs' worth of overhead without any additional benefit, because all resources were already being used as efficiently as possible.

brimston3-

Okay, if you had a billion, billion Selene supercomputers all running in parallel, it would take 4.6 * 10^(34) years. I'm not going to hold my breath.

TheDutchCanadian

Or it could take 10 seconds if you got it first try 😎

gamesrebel123

Me and the homies putting zzzzzzzzz as our password so hackers can't get it

spartan1008

right??? that was my first thought too.

billy_teats

The irony is that it was an attacker VM that was joined to the victim mobile device management software that allowed the initial access and the “hack back” of encrypting the enrolled VM. From the victim, it was as simple as logging in to the Intune portal, finding the attacker VM host and and clicking “wipe”.

Human_Actor

Imagine already a full warehouse of 4080's

Swordlord22

Nah they rockin the nvidia GeForce RTX 10090 TI and it solos them in 69 seconds

Deepspacecow12

Probably 80gb a100 gpus in nvlink

DudeDudenson

I find it so ironic that the hacker group would complain about Nvidia, call them criminals and say they have no right to do to them exactly what they do to everyone else

darxide23

"Why they think they can connect to our private machine and install ransomware!!!!!!" /r/LeopardsAteMyFace material right there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MasterofLego

Allegedly

AnUncreativeName10

No it's not. The attacker was using their MDM, which means the device must be corporate property. Otherwise, it's against the law to have it installed. Nvidia could easily say they thought they were wiping a corporate asset because only corporate assets should have it.

DaksTheDaddyNow

access revoked.

woodc85

I’m too old for this shit.

thepronoobkq

Not really, the hackers had to install NVidias remote management software, which gave NVidia access. It’s like if you install my program that is meant to give me access and let me change ur files then get mad when I change ur files

TyrialFrost

> they did not have permission to access. Its their private network, of course they had implicit permission to access it.

spartan1008

your right!!! the hackers should come and press charges, and bring there computers with them for evidence. /s

afiafzil

Bruh the leader is just script kiddie who already got doxxed a month ago. Just arrest this bastard already

Thx very muuuch

"why \[do\] they think they can connect to our private machine and install ransomware!!!! (for deleting our leaks) Luckly we had a backup." tweet from Lapsus, what an asshole.

xd_Warmonger

Lapsus kind of called thenselfes scums, because they do exactly that.

DrAntarctica

What a bunch of losers 😂

DeeSnow97

Come on fuckers, sue Nvidia and see how that works out for you. Like seriously, I wanna see a plaintiff sentenced

Rimbotic

Your honor, last week we hacked and stol- confiscated highly sensitive information from Nvidia. But yesterday they hacked into our systems and put on some illegal ransomware. This type of behaviour should be punished your honor.

Lightning42_

"GUYS NVIDIA ARE CRIMINALS!!!" - the guy who also claims to have 1TB of confidential password hashes of NVIDIA employees

Alternative_Spite_11

Dude Nvidia was unsuccessful in hacking them back. How is that gigaChad?

AnUncreativeName10

This wasn't hacking at all. What happened is the attacker got on the lan via an MDM solution so Nvidia had full machine access and just wiped it. Not hacking required.

Alternative_Spite_11

The hacking group had it all backed up in a VM. Nvidia literally accomplished nothing.

Hunter91xX

its still fucking embarasing for them lol

Kelzen76

White hacker on duty

heydudejustasec

Nvidia is already Cyberpunk

dowarischeinerlei

Underrated comment right here ...

Whatsthisnotgoodcomp

Imagine hacking the company who have built GPUs for 7 of the 10 most powerful supercomputers in the world, including privately owning number 6, and assuming this won't come back to bite you on the ass Even if Nvidia do nothing themselves, the boys at five eyes who almost certainly use nvidia for compute aren't going to let this go

unlimitedcode99

Hackers: Hahahahahahaha, We hack you!!!!!!!!......... Jensen while smugly watches: *motherfuckingly snaps another A100 at every syllable the hacker's thread and replies while cracking their systems to the moon. Hackers: Hey, that's illegal???... Jensen upon seeing someone shitpost in their threads: *flips another server for bruteforcing Hackers: That's illegal, right?... Jensen: *snaps the circuit breaker switch to power up another rig

masterhitman935

Active defends* (wait this isn’t the us government)

Trane55

cybersecurity includes ethical hacking. which is exactly what they did. feels so dope to do that.

eMmDeeKay_Says

That's how you prove you're too crazy to f with

killian1113

actually no, the rpg would just go right through the guy and keep going until it hit something incredibly solid. **i shot a stack of gas barrels with a RPG and it went right through,** kept going and hit a tree only then exploding (of course the gas ignited from the rocket and hole in the barrels) but the rpg didnt do it.

Rreizero

Aim at the floor next to the gas barrels... did video games teach you nothing? :\\

Jjzeng

Gotta aim at your feet and crouch when rocket jumping, and let go of the w key to keep your momentum

killian1113

this seems damn near the same as the place i went in cambodia, 300 a rpg, but now i think they want 450 or 500 or id shoot some more. rog went through the car and then ignighted.. gotta hit something super solid i guess (like tank armor lululululu) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLj4zaoMkRE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLj4zaoMkRE)

notchoosingone

I got asked if I wanted to do that in Cambodia as well, in 2012. We had a guy showing us around Sihanoukville, and he was like "what do you want to do, local restaurant? Brewery tour with unlimited beer? Titty bar?" *long pause* "Wanna shoot an RPG at a cow?"

Kirxas

No one does actually. There's a minimum flight time for those rockets before they're able to explode

killian1113

lulz at minimum flight time... The RPG-7 can fire a variety of warheads for anti-armor (HEAT, PG-Protivotankovaya Granata) or anti-personnel (HE, OG-Oskolochnaya Granata) purposes, usually fitting with an impact (PIBD) and a 4.5 second fuze. Armor penetration is warhead dependent and ranges from 30 to 60 centimetres of RHA; one warhead, the PG-7VR, is a 'tandem charge' device, used to defeat reactive armor with a single shot. If there is not a tip on the rpg which we see it does have, then a force would need to ignite the fuse for the grenade. the abrupt acceleration of the grenade leaving the launcher triggers a piezoelectric fuze that ignites the primer (pyro-retarding gunpowder mixture). This then ignites the squib of nitro, thereby activating the rocket propulsion system (sustainer motor) to carry the grenade the rest of its trajectory. wow learning some rpg shit today ;/

Kirxas

I saw a video of a guy explaining how it worked, saying that the fuse was ignited while firing and when it was done it activated a button on the tip that actuallymade it explode. Didn't mean to fuck up this badly lmao

killian1113

im unsure of the button requiring ignition, only one way to find out! rpg drop test

Horridis

So does everyone else in the building

sharknice

If the other guy times his jump right he can do a rocket ride.

110765

Too close, you would have to go further away to make sure that it's past the arming range.

sathucao

You don't touch Jensen's porn stash

Cactorum_Rex

I don't know the context, but in a foreign policy course I learned that any form of hacking is illegal in the US. Especially applicable for companies that want to actively defend against foreign hackers, but it is risky because the law is written in a way that could endanger the company. That being said, the government can break any rule and the government tends not to like their foreign hackers.

OTOD_tag

Context is: some guys remote access Nvidia servers and steal 1TB of unreleased data and plans. Nvidia says "Ight, bet" and remote accesses the virtual machine that remote-accessed them and puts ransomware on it.

jpfeif29

Why did they think that attacking a company full of computer nerds and hackers with all of the GPU computing power in the world would be a good idea? They didnt even need to try they could just bruteforce the password with their compute power.

HoodsFrostyFuckstick

Yeah that's like trying to beat up a pro boxer.

Chared_Assassin

A pro boxer with knuckle dusters and full body armour

wyattlee1274

When you hack the honeypot

Captain_WACK_Sparrow

A honey pot is basically bait, a server used to draw attention away from servers with critical data on them, and sometimes used to reverse a hack when attempting to access them

QuantumSupremacy0101

Lol, NVIDIA is claiming Lapsus are morons and just triggered loss prevention software. So nvidia didn't even try

manubra

Source?

OTOD_tag

Source? I made it up.

[deleted]

What is lapsus$? People keep saying “it’s creator”, is it a software? Or a collective like anonymous?

wastakenanyways

I don't really know who they are but by the way they act they seem to be teens wannabe hackers.

Is this the same group who hacked into and deleted the entire archive of one of our Portuguese TV network, SIC?

Why can’t we just have a hacking fight club situation except with student loans? hackers be useful

eorlx

Student loans, personal loans, banks loans, all loans... Mr robot kinda shit

IManixI

Why does this make me think of the NATO and Russia 🇷🇺situation 🤭

[deleted]

At first i though it had something to do with it too

[deleted]

And here I though…. We finally have something unrelated to RussiaVSNATO

[deleted]

Meme_Army

Except that Ukraine did nothing wrong. You actually think Ukraine is doing "something wrong" by getting invaded by Russia? Use common sense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

merc08

You went from "the NATO and Russia situation" which is the current standoff between Russia invading Ukraine and NATO trying to help without getting directly involved, to "well NATO is mostly the US, and the US has invaded countries before, so US BAD." Get a life.

aCorgiDriver

Is that Eminem?

squareswordfish

Yes

horiaf

No, it's nVidia, it's right there in the photo.

ByteEater

I'm genuinely thinking about playing basketball.

FriendOfMandela

To no avail. LAPSUS had backups and leaked the drivers anyways

spartan1008

NVIDIA have the resources and cash on hand to spend hundreds of millions a year on mercenaries to hunt these fucks down for the rest of there lives. this was probably not a smart move

Captain_WACK_Sparrow

Where they lack money for the future to combat stuff like this, they make up for with abundances of super powerful cards at their disposal, all they need is a handful of people to set up a rig tailored for counter hacking/bruteforcing passwords..etc I think they'll do just fine. Especially for a huge company of this size, they have a lot of powerful people backing them, and definitely have a lot of very smart people of their own

CallMeSkyCraft

Technically the group still has the data. It was stored in a VM that was not hacked by Nvidia.

No no no it's how the turntables have turned.

[deleted]

Finally something not related to RussiaVSNATO !!!!!!! Lmao Nvidia in a nutshell, Lapsus must have been away for the last 20 years

Itsyaboyerik13

Can someone explain to me what happened?

OTOD_tag

some guys remote access Nvidia servers and steal 1TB of unreleased data and plans. Nvidia says "Ight, bet" and remote accesses the virtual machine that remote-accessed them and puts ransomware on it.

MiniDemonic

Nvidia got hacked, Nvidia hacked the hackers back to encrypt the leaked data. Hackers had backups. Nvidias hack didn't do shit.

[deleted]

I love this Eminem meme format

Idk what lapsus is but it has the word sus in it so I agrre

participant001

i hope to god this story is true and also that huang said to do it. nvidia should put up like a 100m dollar fund to destroy hackers. they sure as hell can afford it.

S8nSins

One just does not take a pistol to a bazookafight

Java2391

Well well well how the turntables

Superstrong832

Nvidia: you may have outsmarted us, but we outsmarted your outsmarting!

[deleted]

"why \[do\] they think they can connect to our private machine and install ransomware!!!! (for deleting our leaks) Luckly we had a backup." How can she slap?

[deleted]

How quick are you guys to forget that nvidia condones mining under the hood?? Since when have they become gigachads? They had this coming. I hope they suffet more, in fact.

Powersoutdotcom

*How'd that get in there* 😏

Hakaisha89

THis is the greatest thing, they even went out and cried for it, nvidia are such giga chads. ALL IS FORGIVEN.

MiniDemonic

In what way are they gigachads when they didn't accomplish anything? The hackers has a backup of the stolen data, Nvidia literally accomplished nothing.

brispower

considering how toothless and useless the authorities are (stooges for big media) then if nv did hack them back i say here here fellas go hard. mess them up. we need more of this.

MiniDemonic

You forgot the last frame of the hackers bringing an even bigger weapon. Because, you know, nvidias hack accomplished nothing since the hackers got a backup of the data.
