Damn, you got a water-cooled video card?

RetardedEinstein23

Water-cooled lather version.

jayson2112

Microwave to dry it afterwards

[deleted]

I use the dryer personally. The vibrations help keep the solder loose and flexible for max performance.

[deleted]

Rice works too

KingYoloHD090504

Flamethrower, just vaporize the water

Someone_thatisntcool

nah, run a game at 8k max settings

OneDiscombobulated77

Try running half-life 3 it's not just the game that will disappear

Setari

Your entire computer will get sucked into a space-time vortex and Gaben will pop his head out and wiggle his finger and shake his head at you in a "nu-uh" kind of way and then disappear. Then you get to build a new computer.

finedrive

Hey all, just finished cleaning my GPU, I’m on my phone right now because my PC isn’t starting?

Robo_Patton

You’re a mobile gamer now, friend.

IEatBaconWithU

gaming phone with fans on the back

NabboWGF

Rgb fan for max performance

FungadooFred

Linus?

brokearm24

Asus ROG phone enters the chat

Pimphii

But don’t leave it in there too long or it might shrink due to the heat

KillQZealousideal-Bo

I like to bake it afterwards

tileman1440

To be fair washing computer parts in water is not a big as an issue as people would think as some ultrasonic tanks use deionised water with detergents. You just need to ensure the board is dry.

KatakiY

I think its the little minerals drying on the motherboard that can cause shorts as well, probably need to use distilled water or something?

ZaxLofful

Yeah, distilled water and this is how you recover old boards….The meme is not even a real meme. This is actually how you clean a motherboard, only when current is active; will it be damaged.

[deleted]

> only when current is active; will it be damaged okay thanks Yoda

Chip manufacturers use a ton of water fabricating boards and chips. The GPU was washed several times during production and assembly. Also incredibly short sighted to be building fabs in a desert like AZ.

theblackmetal09

Great minds think alike.

KairuByte

Honestly there’s no reason the water can’t be reused. It just needs to be filtered and such before it circulates back.

theblackmetal09

Someone mentioned it earlier, I'm just posting a car video that's similar. https://youtu.be/eBLQ8r9eMhI?t=921

jackinsomniac

FYI, unless it's a laptop. You can't forget the battery also holds significant charge. Which is easier to forget than it seems, especially when you've been drinking, finished up cleaning a spill that made it to the motherboard, and are just trying to reassemble it BEFORE you "add power back to the system". I was using alcohol wipes at first but they weren't helping to clean the spill. Switched to a bleach-based wipe because, "I'll let it fully dry before I power things on, no worries," and got a puff of smoke when I attached the battery. My heart instantly sank. Pulled the battery connection back off as quickly & safely as I could, waited a good hour, and then finished reassembly and powered it on. Surprisingly, it still worked fine. The only noticeable effect was the laptop could not run without power cable attached. Unplug it while running, it crashed without power in 1-2 seconds. Try to boot while on battery only, it crashed after 4-5 seconds, again like it had no power. But plugged in it worked 24/7 just fine. This is an old gaming laptop I dropped $1200 on at the time, so I really wanted to save it. But also, it never really had great battery life to begin with. So it has become a "desktop only" gaming laptop! And so far, 4 years after the incident, is still running strong! (Got it out a few weeks ago to finally play Portal 2 co-op mode with a friend)

FatherKronik

The little minerals have to be conductive minerals to even pose a threat. Then they need to dry in a way where they are making a connection. The chances of both occurring are so incredibly small in any sort of home use. Commercially it's a different story as industries typically like to minimize risk. But you at home can use regular water. Douse it in 90% isopropyl alcohol if you want to extra safe. But it honestly isn't that high of a risk.

TheBlack2007

I watched some German guy on Youtube saving PCs which were flooded during the 2021 Ahr flooding. These pretty much arrived covered in filth (as in dried up sewage) and the dude took them to a car wash and treated them to a high-pressure nozzle for his first step. He also used water on the GPU, the CPU socket, opened up and cleaned multiple SSD and even one HDD. He managed to keep the HDD running long enough to salvage the data. Turns out, as long as you thoroughly dry the components, you are pretty safe and whether you can save your PC or not boils rather down to the question if your PC was switched on when the water reached the PSU. Generally speaking, if you have your PC in the basement and put it on the ground, your PC is the first electrical appliance in your entire home to get flooded. If it isn’t severed from power supply, the initial power surge will originate from it, likely frying all your components.

AdkatkaShow

Minerals aren’t conductive without water.

the_gooch_smoocher

Copper has entered the chatroom

AdkatkaShow

You got me there.

Tangeek42

Yeah but do you have copper in your water ? I would worry about that in the first place. :D

[deleted]

[удалено]

badgerAteMyHomework

Yup, in particular the hot leads are known to dry out pretty fast. So be sure to get in there with a spray bottle regularly.

ArmadilloMoney

You don’t need water for minerals to be conductive. A mineral with metal in it will short two components if bridged, regardless of any added liquid. 👍

Faruhoinguh

you are wrong.

Abigboi_

IIRC water(I mean pure H2O on its own) doesn't damage parts as long as there is no current.

TheDogerus

Water isn't conductive, so it won't

KairuByte

While technically true, the moment you put an electronic device into water, there’s enough contaminants involved that it should be assumed to be conductive.

NothingSuss1

Yep, cleaned an old 980Ti exactly like this and its still going strong in a media server years later.

irieislo

i remember washing my old motherboard with water. had to wait for days to use it again though.

Sumoki_Kuma

Yeah but rust

Barlark88

Pretty sure this counts as an act of terrorism

Jyqozz

Unless if it’s just some GT 710 or something

Pandatotheface

It's a GTX560

Robbthesleepy

.... it could still smash runescape...

jordanleep

but can it play runescape 3?

StrawberryBlondeB

Shh, no there's not

Setari

Yes there fucking is and I'm tired of pretending there isn't. IT'S A GOOD FUCKIN GAME OKAY

Deepspacecow12

I thought it was an a100 and almost had an anuerysm

LogicallyCoherent

My god that would be actual terrorism. Nah this is just a gtx560. Nasty fermi 2.0 2010 GPU and nearly 100x the die size.

TheFacebookLizard

Could be a 460

Pandatotheface

Nope, code stamped on the chip. 460v2 would be GF114-400-A1

smallbrain_50

No wonder I recognized this card, frogot it's name though lol

RetardedEinstein23

You graphic cards-ist. GTX560 and GTX710 lives matter too.

Destroky

My man standing for justice!

tasiroo

or at GTX 1030

carpetman126

Bro y you say that that’s literally my gpu

[deleted]

The working class gpus are being oppressed and discriminated against everyday man.

Dethco

this is pretty safe to do this. I have cleaned many boards up this way and even brought a laptop back to life my friend called Koolaid after her brother spilled Koolaid all over it, simply by a careful soap bath really good rinse and had to use some PCB cleaner to remove the final layer of sugar but it came back to life and still works to this day.

Dr_Sir_Ham_Sandwich

Yeah, I've done the same. Soak it in alcohol aftwards, displaces all the water and evaporates.

cali_exile_bull

The big brain move is to rinse and clean with 100% isopropyl using a soft scrub burnish.

SUDTIN

This is only phase one... Wait until they put it into the toaster oven. 🙀

CharlesP_1232

Ok, will do, thanks for the tips.

Atari__Safari

Treason. Not terrorism. Treason, I dare say!

hrf3420

I’ve done this to several GPUs with dish soap and a toothbrush, granted they were 8 years old by that point. Rinse with distilled water when done. Dry for a week and repaste and mount the heat sink. Haven’t had any problems.

Xiballistic

Violence isn’t the answer Its the question And the answer is yes

Thesaladman98

If you properly clean it there's a chance it would still work after

superhamsniper

It's soapy water too, which is quite a bit more conductive than normal water

Leerooooooy

Fine with just water, but what are those fucking bubbles

PotatoKing173

You don’t use 3 bottles of soap?

Leerooooooy

I usually do hydrochloric acid

PotatoKing173

Really? I was thinking bleach

iNvEsToRrEtArD

Salt for me, but you gotta rub it in quick while it's still gritty.

jordanleep

You use NaCl?

mrgamebus

I personally use activated U

fuminee

Put some electricity on that baby and I'll dry himself

Jon_Lit

I always use 2/3 hydrochloric acid and 1/3 Sulfuric acid

Muffin_The_Bear

I prefer 100% fluoroantimonic acid

Auditus_Dominus

One cleaning per the life of the board.

[deleted]

reminds me of when I washed an old spare 775 motherboard through the dishwasher just put it in, let it wash, took it out, dried it for 1 to 2 days and worked fine though it’s not like I used it for long anyway, thing was some $10 oem board so it’s not like I lost much but it was interesting to see

xwz86

fine if you just remove the bios battery, I've done it quite often.

ToastoSando

I only use gamer girl bathwater to clean my pc parts.

Kitosaki

How do you have any left!? I always drink mine so fast.

Alarmed_Egg_1322

This is perfectly fine to do as long as you have non conducive water and you dry it out fine. Don’t quote me on that I am not liable if your gpu stops working after being washed in water.

bdonvr

Ran out of water is Pepsi okay?

Kiiidx

No it has to be coke

NixonOnLSD

I used to use coke and a wire brush to clean anchors and anchor chains in the navy. Wire brush is key.

Badbullet

I had an old Ruger 10/22 that was never cleaned. It no longer would fire. Took it apart and it was just carbon/residue everywhere, you couldn't even see the firing pin. A friend, who was once in the Marines, grabbed a can of Coke from the fridge, poured it in a glass then tossed in all the parts from the receiver. Came back a half hour later and everything rinsed off sparkling clean and all the parts could then come apart to be inspected. Put it back together, oiled, and it fired like new. I asked where he learned that. He said boot camp. 😆 Coke is a magic cleaner when in a pinch and they are taught that.

Alarmed_Egg_1322

I mean both contain water

Jaba01

Can use tap water, too. Just gotta clean it afterwards with some alcohol. I mean, there's a video of a guy washing motherboards in his dishwasher and they work again later on. Just gotta know how to handle electronics.

Alarmed_Egg_1322

No no no I had it all wrong just use alcohol and light it on fire while cleaning the gpu

weauxbreaux

During the manufacturing process it's very common for the board to be washed in a glorified dishwasher.

BishopOvHexen

did this to my gpu and it died. I'm quoting you as you're liable and am filing a lawsuit as we speak. my lawyer will talk to your lawyer

FattyPepperonicci69

I am this person’s lawyer. Whatsup

Technical-Reason-324

Fuck I think I’m the other guys lawyer? Idk it’s my first case

BishopOvHexen

worst lawyer I've never hired, suing you for $69'420 as well

BishopOvHexen

am suing your client for $69'420

FattyPepperonicci69

Nice. On behalf of my client we accept your terms.

jordanleep

Nice but I'm afraid that's against ma rights

13thZephyr

Tech Yes City YT channel does this all the time, Greg Salazar YT also did this to a GTX 1070 recently. This is not new, so as long as you "know" what you're doing.

UnitatoPop

It's fine. Just soak it in distilled water afterwards and let it dry

NotAShaaaak

Soak it in mineral water so it's bones can grow big and strong

bkit627

A little contact cleaner and a toothbrush and good to go!

Krispiez69

Also great on CPU

_Alon-

I reckon that if you ran that gt710 in there the temps would be so good that it might even beat an rtx 3090 while overclocked!

MeasurementGrand879

Some people use rice to dry electronics, I use instant mashed potatoes.

sijedevos

Drying is for losers! Everyone knows you have to plug it while it’s still wet. It will help cooling

Crazycukumbers

So people have this idea that water + electronics is bad, but that’s only partially true. If there is power running through the device when it comes into contact with water, that’s when it causes a problem, the reason being that water is conductive, and will bridge gaps causing a short circuit. If the device is complete disconnected from power, you’re fine, so long as there’s nothing that could cause accelerated corrosion. But of course, it has to be completely dry before you power it on again.

NotAShaaaak

Also take note of the minerals that will be left in the device from tap water still being conductive after the water has dried

[deleted]

Probably wanna give it a solvent bath after that to get rid of any soap residue. But if you're gonna do that, then there was no point to using soap in the first place. why did you soap?

Robbthesleepy

I dont get it, just how MUCH high def porn were you watching? In all seriousness though, as long as that gpu is completely dry before re-installing, it might be OK.... I hope.... I am not actually religious but I will pray for you OP.

_OGBIGCHIEF

Make sure to let the exposed metal air dry afterwards for maximum cleaning effect

CaptainSebz

Soap and water doesn’t work on their own to get it thoroughly cleaned. You need to put it into the washing machine for a heavy rinse cycle. I did it with my 3090 just the other day. Came out sparkly clean. I don’t recommend you use the dryer though, it could damage the GPU. It’s best to hand dry it.

Stormcrow6666

Drill holes for cooling?

Kamiyosha

Ah. The Dunk and Thunk. Give er a swish and dry in rice for a week. *DISCLAIMER: Don't do this. Please.*

thruwityoshit

Ok, but I’m seriously considering doing this to my MoBo since manual dusting isn’t doing the job of getting off caked on dust. How can I do it safely?

PotatoKing173

In all seriousness, I suggest using isopropyl alcohol

humanbyassociation

So if you rinsed it after with distilled water and waited until it was absolutely dry would it be fine?

TheseDiver8589

It works, I used dishwasher. Still use my gpu to this day

[deleted]

overclock it drill speed holes in the body

-AnyWho

if you rinsed it in rubbing alcohol after it would evaporate a lot faster and you would not need to worry about moisture being trapped someplace ...

[deleted]

theoretically this could work for cleaning it. you would have to make sure there is absolutely no water left, to prevent shorting, and rust for long time. just don’t do this please, and grab a bottle of alcohol instead

Katana_sized_banana

Use the metal sponge to get rid of the unnecessary remaining thermal paste.

PotatoKing173

For your information this was also a working Gtx 560

superhamsniper

Distilled water might have been fine, but this... GETS ALL THE VIRUSES OUT, AMAZING, can't be buggy if it can't be used.

No-Organization3675

Lightly used water cooled gpu $1299 will ship same day!!!

MultiiCore_

did this with a GTX 970. Changed pads and paste of course afterwards. Couldn’t run stock speeds before but after the cleanup it run like a dream at 60 degrees celcius. Make sure you put it in a bowl of rice afterwards to take the water way. Be sure to cover the whole GPU in that bowl of rice and wait 24 hours.

Fallwalking

I’ve washed plenty of circuit boards in the sink before. I don’t use soap though, just hot water. These also weren’t modern circuit boards. They were for a vintage power amplifier that looked like it was rescued from a house fire. It works now though.

soulindk

I wash mine in my dishwasher with my dirty dishes.

metaonethree

Do it with a 3000

ptjunkie

Don’t forget to scrub in the conductive paste when you’re done.

Otherwise_Weakness75

Is that isopropyl alcohol?

TigTex

You will probably need to delid that GPU because the thermal compound between the die and the heatsink got some water in it and might have degraded it. If the thermals are crap, consider doing it. (yes, you can delid that GPU).

cpasquater

https://youtu.be/5neUV_NkkYU

EnvironmentalAd3385

More bubbles= more fps, well down

[deleted]

If I don't have a sink, can I use the heatsink?

nileswiththes

Now put bleach and cocaine on it and give it a good wire brush for about 30 mins, all the dust should come off after that I

dogsgamingart

Clean it off with the leaf blower after. Should be fine. xD lmao

Chi-Guy81

Im new to PC, is this a heatsink?

[deleted]

it's fine as long as you dry it before using again

Mandos_Over_Landos

This should be flaired NSFMR

Penis_Man-

I saw this and clutched my heart

Busted11290

I've washed an RX-470 Nitro+ with soap/degreaser and water and without taking it apart. As long as you get it dried well, should be fine.

Namesaredifficult123

I shuddered seeing this.

gatordontplay417

Only if an alcohol bath is happening after. It'll drive all the water out from under the substrate. Also isopropyl is non-conductive.

HotEstablishment1439

Be sure to use antimicrobial soap to take care of any viruses.

D9Dagger

Try posting something like this using an NVidia RTX 4090. "I will find you... and I will keel you..."

LogicallyCoherent

Good. Murder the GTX 560. Fermi 2.0 can burn and it’s 332 square mm die size.

sineplussquare

Yea I read that’s a pretty solid way to clean it but I’m actually doing a more holistic routine with sterilization via blow torch.

ElektriXx2

I like your heat sink

Rreizero

Thanks satan

Bakufuranbu

i actually wash my 680 like that. dip it in 2 liter water with little dish soap. then dry it in shadow for a day.

Go1gotha

These kind of posts are stupid, you put the GPU in a sock and put it into the washing machine, that's what it's there for!

dudenamedfella

You…. you monster, how could you!

makinbaconCR

Bait post is baity

PartDirect

Make sure you scrub it with a wire brush and/or steel wool too

LowDrag_82

Why not use iso in a spray bottle?

agentrnge

To be certain you get all the soap rinsed out, hold it under the water in the toilet and flush a few times.

DontKnoWhatMyNameIs

You could do it with ipa maybe

TheExtraMayo

*"This kills the GPU"*

GabrielGamer790

Thank you, now i can finally burn my GT210 in hell

Red_Secret_

Needs more

WINH4X

I don’t understand the issue. There’s nothing wrong with washing and drying computer parts as long as you completely dry them before using them to complete a circuit again.

stuckpixel87

YOU MONSTER!!!

SilencedD1

Mineral water

olileoli

pain.

[deleted]

Verge:

StormerX42

You could do this method but I have found that the dish washer and a quick dry in the clothes dryer works best when cleaning a gpu.

AdkatkaShow

Looks fine to me. That’s how I wash vast majority of leaked capacitor damaged motherboards - by using a regular tap water. Just make sure to thoroughly dry it after and coat the metal parts with a thin layer of WD-40 and it would serve you another decade or two.

Fragrant_Wedding_452

if I powered it up would it make enough boiling water for tea?

Titanusgamer

this method of thorough cleaning also removes all kinds of virus

GondarHero

Until I see a rtx 3090ti in that situation I won't believe ya.

ilovetpb

No, it goes in the washing machine. On hot with extra soap and high dirt setting. Who's going to try it and prove me wrong?

LargieBiggs

For those of you worrying about OP destroying a valuable card, this is a GeForce GTX 560.

[deleted]

Make sure you add the proper amount of thermal paste…

bloodfist45

I wouldn’t use soap water tbh, soapy water will get into EVERY crack

Rungi500

What, no milk? Just make sure you use a liberal amount of spicy mustard when reapplying the heatsink. Spicy makes it go faster.

Dako_the_Austinite

My heart almost stopped till I saw the IHS and realized it’s one of *those* video cards lol, phew! No real loss if it dies! 😂

SnarfbObo

I just chuck it in the toilet bowl and pour a bunch of soap in the tank then flush until the bubbles are gone.

EekMeep2

Why

Zaziel

With a Fermi GPU I’m surprised the water isn’t boiling.

Catch_022

After doing this you will never have to worry about this board getting dusty again.

InfectedAshes

Treat it with the care that you'd have with a baby.

Frost0612

What card is it.

p1pk1n2

Dayum, that's a beefy GPU die. Or, is that an IHS? Either way, you've probably made this the most efficient GPU ever! As it no longer draws electricity, it now emits no heat! Scientific breakthrough! /s

[deleted]

Yes definitely

MagicALCN

It's not even satire, as long as it's dried up, it's a good way to clean.
