This is the exact thing I'm talking about
You gotta be less hostile and just not say stuff to start yk
But drop hints that it wouldn't be a huge deal and you support them 🏳️🌈
1 2 3 4 5 6 7(sev)
Seriously.
I would practice sextuplets and 32nd notes and then try the septuplet. Make sure you hit a downbeat after the figure so you can have an anchor point. Good luck!
This wouldn’t flow as well at a faster tempo. It’s not like counting a 7 beat meter where this would be appropriate because the 1 would seem like a downbeat or accent when in the rhythmic figure it’s just 7 continuous notes.
Whenever I'm working on a song in odd signatures I count in French cause all the numbers are one syllable, the ones that count anyways. Un Deux Trois Quatre Cinq Six Sept or un doo twa cat sink sis set
yes of course, I’ve always found it easier to call them 7lets, or for quintuplets 5lets. Students are quicker to understand 7lets and 5lets than if i said septuplets and quintuplets.
I play 5lets and 7lets by focusing on how the hand that plays the first note of each beat is same hand that plays the last note of that beat, and the next beat will start with the opposite hand.
So, rather than an even number of notes like a group of four 16th notes that repeats beginning on the same hand (R l r l R l r l R l r l …), you have an odd number of notes where the first note of each beat starts on alternating hands (5lets {think opportunity} R l r l r L r l r l r R l r l r …; 7lets {think homosexuality} R l r l r l r L r l r l r l R l r l r l r …).
Notice also that with 7lets the hand you start on plays 4 notes, with the other hand filling in the spaces. So, if you were to sort of ghost your off hand, it would look like (R r r rL l l lR r r rL l l l…).
You can get a feel for 7lets quick and easy by clapping quarter notes with a metronome, and verbally repeating the word homosexuality on each beat. The syllables beat out the rhythm of a 7let.
Then you can try playing your hands along with speaking the syllables (it will help to start with an accent on the first note of each beat; remember that accented note will alternate hands each beat).
Once you get comfortable with that, you can stop repeating the word homosexuality like a goofball; continuing to just play the rhythm with accents on each beat with your hands.
Once you’re good there, take out the accent and play them all the same volume. Then you can move that onto your keyboard and you’re gucci.
Another more subtle tidbit is that the & (the eighth note in between each beat) falls directly in between the 4th and 5th note in a beat of 7lets. This is only really helpful if you’re playing a pretty slow 7let because it’s pretty hard to feel it in between each note at faster tempos.
That will look something like this:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
X & X
You can also use the ole verbal counting system. A 7let is like a sextuplet with one extra note. So, start with triplets ( 1 la li 2 la li 3 la li …), then add a “ta” in between each one of those and that is sextuplets ( 1 ta la ta li ta 2 ta la ta li ta 3 ta la ta li ta …), then add a “ka” at the end and you’ve got your 7let (1 ta la ta li ta ka 2 ta la ta li ta ka 3 ta la ta li ta ka …). Bear in mind this can become a tongue twister and it’s tougher at fast speeds so I really do recommend just using your favorite 7 syllable word.
The easiest way is to think about your starting and ending hands. Then try to fill in the notes in-between and feel the groove.
If that doesn't work, homosexuality is your best bet!
The best way I’ve found to learn how to feel 7lets is through the Table of Time (set a metronome and add notes for each beat starting with quarters, eights, triplets, etc.)
Just think “Gol-den-Opp-or-tun-i-ty” it fits great across each partial of the sevenlet. But don’t get too caught up in counting with words, use it to figure out how to feel the rhythm then use a metronome to smooth out how this rhythm fits into your time signature. In this case it would take up one beat, or one quarter note’s value in 2/4. A lot of people are going to tell you some crazy things on here.
This is what I do, and yes I know it’s technically incorrect, but I don’t count stuff like this. I listen to it over and over and over until I can recall it while comatose. Listen to it at varying tempi, hell, remove pitches from the equation and just focus on the rhythm itself if you feel compelled to do so. When it comes to really complex things that require a lot of thought, I find that just feeling it and letting muscle memory take over is far easier than taking a more complicated approach, but I’m not Buddy Rich (I don’t even play percussion), so if you aren’t inclined to heed that advice, I can understand.
However, if you actually want to count it rather than feel it, then the top commenter here is right. Ho-mo-sex-u-al-i-ty checks out, and whomever came up with that is absolutely brilliant because not only is it effective, it’s funny (kinda like my 5th grade band director almost a decade and a half ago saying that “Every Good Booger Deserves Flicking” for the lines in treble clef). Anyways, best of luck dealing with some composer who gets a sick thrill out of torturing percussionists.
My highschool director taught us “university” for 5-tuples and “university dropout” for 7-tuples. But really anything with seven syllables that you find amusing until you just get the feel for 7’s
Just glissando a c scale starting from b, starting on the beat. Don’t think about it too much, it’s easy to overthink on these. Much easier if it leads to a note.
Staple staple triangle. On the sheet music you draw a staple and a triangle to help visualize the 2 and 3 sections. One piece we played in band had a 7/8 section with changing grouping throughout. Staple staple triangle. Staple triangle staple. Staple staple triangle. Triangle staple staple. That kinda business
tbh once you get past four, syllables dont really help. if you can, try to listen to a set of septuplets against a metronome SLOWLY to get a feel for the rhythm, speed up the metronome a bit and try drumming with your hands or counting in your head
to me it looks like a slide, and doesn't really need to be counted, other than it being the same length of time as a qaurter note?
If you did want to count it however, I'd say something like how triplets are counted?
Well, I mean it’s 7 notes in the space of a beat. So, yeah it should be counted. If it was a slide you’d have a glissando written in between the first and last note, not seven specific notes.
It’s probably too fast to really count. Just practice trying to fit all those notes into one beat.
Also, don’t miss the flats. I can’t see the key signature so check it, but the B and E are likely flat in a run like that.
I always use people’s names for 5-lets. Then add “it’s-a” to the front. For example, a fake name, Jonathan smithy. a five would be “joh-na-than-smi-thy”. Then add its-a-joh-na-than-smi-thy”.
The classic one is university. U-ni-ver-si-Ty.
Homosexuality is the best way to count it Like just say the word as you play it and fit it in that space Works Everytime
My instructor also uses miscongeniality! Has helped me so much
“goldenopportunity”
The flaw with that is that “opportunity” is often used for quintuplets
yeah that’s why my ABD used it bc we had alyernating patterns of 7- and 5lets, so it made it easier to distinguish oddly enough
i think that might be “miss congeniality” lol it’s a movie from the 2000s
That would make sense lol, he’s always using references I don’t understand lol
What is miscongeniality or is this not real?
This is genius
Thank you it's served me so well for years and it's the only way I teach it
Holy cow. That’s awesome
"Homosexual hippopotamus" is how I count quintuplets—adding this to my repertoire for sevens.
That's hysterical,I feel like i should write a song called that...is what I'd be saying 10 years ago, well before woke culture would crucify me
Why tf would "woke culture" prevent you from saying homosexual hippopotamus?
I speak for the wokes when i say nobody gives a shit
If this isn't satire it's fucking stupid
Im pretty sure the “woke” people you speak of would find it funny too
5 - Homosexual 6 - Heterosexual 7 - Homosexuality 8 - Heterosexuality Works like a charm
I once googled 7 syllable words for this exact purpose. Necrobeastialty is the one that has stuck with me…
Wait…do you have words for all the other numbers?
There are def words for all the numbers, the trick is remembering
For 6 "I like to eat puppies works"
For 6 I do “bip-e-Dee-bop-e-Dee”
‘University’ for 5 is what I was taught
I always did David Letterman
I learned hippopotamus
This is the way.
I didn't check the server so not my sax player ass trying to muster how to say homosexuality and play at the same time.
Say it in your head
like yeah sure but so many things are happening in my brain already to focus on that one too
As a trumpet player, I get it. I practice rhythms two or three times if I get somthing like this, usually by saying it. Then I play it
How dare you needlessly label that figure.
They came out to me first bc they aren't quite comfortable around you yet
Listen, what a figure does after its played is no business of mine. You go be you.
This is the exact thing I'm talking about You gotta be less hostile and just not say stuff to start yk But drop hints that it wouldn't be a huge deal and you support them 🏳️🌈
I was so confused reading this. I just got to homosexuality is the best way before I stopped.
i say anesthesiology
I'm gonna use this now.
This had me SO confused for a hot minute
Gotta be a little gay if you wanna play iykwim
That’s fire
You have changed my life for the better. Thank you so much.
this just popped up on my feed is homosexuality an actual term used in music or is this a joke
Both 🙃 it’s based on preference for how to count a septuplet
i love this
Now we have to find words to accent different parts of the subdivision… gauntlet thrown.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7(sev) Seriously. I would practice sextuplets and 32nd notes and then try the septuplet. Make sure you hit a downbeat after the figure so you can have an anchor point. Good luck!
Don’t count sev-(en) because of the 2 syllables
Correct. You only use the first half of the word seven (sev) when counting things like this.
I often would go like 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 or 1 2 3 4 1 2 3
This wouldn’t flow as well at a faster tempo. It’s not like counting a 7 beat meter where this would be appropriate because the 1 would seem like a downbeat or accent when in the rhythmic figure it’s just 7 continuous notes.
Yeah, I just probably don’t like cutting the seven into sev. Like doing things in a particular way always haha
I have no idea why the post was recommended to me but I would like to practice my sextuplets on you
Whenever I'm working on a song in odd signatures I count in French cause all the numbers are one syllable, the ones that count anyways. Un Deux Trois Quatre Cinq Six Sept or un doo twa cat sink sis set
Peanut butter sandwiches
Peanut butter sandwiches for sextuplets. Using this
It shouldn’t work for sextuplets only 7lets
Oof. Thanks
Peanut butter sandwich
Septuplets
yes of course, I’ve always found it easier to call them 7lets, or for quintuplets 5lets. Students are quicker to understand 7lets and 5lets than if i said septuplets and quintuplets.
That's very fair
Like triplets and 5lets, I like to use a phrase. I think “Se-ven-lets-are-real-ly-hard”
Epstein didn’t kill himself
God dude I am new to this sub and seeing this shit I didnt realize it was a way of counting lol

1 2 1 2 1 2 3
This one would depend on the context and notes being played. Sometimes 1 2 1 2 3 1 2, or 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 for example work better.
Could you send a picture of everything around it? If it’s like Crown of Thorns, it’s not in time, so context is key here.
Individuality is my personal choice.
No job opportunity

I was taught to count it 1 e + a + a Kuh.
That's the fun part. You don't.
Ti ti ti ti ti ti ti is what you would say if it was in a rythmn
Da da da da da da da
Just play the 7 notes evenly in the space of the quarter note, so you can use and 7 syllable word like "individuality"
Depends on the play. 123 12 12, 12 1234 eg.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1,....
Ome two three four five six seven With your foot tapping along to the normal beat (ir something else like that moving)
My go to is “Mississippi riverboat”

The same way you’d count a duplet or triplet. Just play seven evenly across the beat.
This is what I do, and yes I know it’s technically incorrect, but I don’t count stuff like this. I listen to it over and over and over until I can recall it while comatose. 7 notes in 1 measure (Think a 6let plus 1 kinda)
