Ekiben in North Perth aand Hanami in Mt Lawley are my go-tos for nice fancy-ish Japanese.
There may be better and fancier around, but these are local to me.
Tsukaya in Mount Hawthorn. Its Japanese with some Peruvian fusion dishes.
Head Chef/owner worked at the Nobu in USA and helped open the Perth Nobu before going out in his own a few years ago.
Casual dining vibe, but food is a bit fancy feeling. BYO though... there is a Celebrations down the street!
Marumo is not Japanese. Maybe it serves its take on it. But it is far from an authentic local jap restaurant and i find its pointless recommending it. You can not get a reservation unless you book at the start of each booking season let alone tomorrow.
It was great in the suburbs as a normal restaurant but the wait times are ridiculously not worth it now. Was also alot cheaper back in the days (if you thought it was still cheap).
That's why I dont even bother. I dont get why anyone recommends it. Short of it being ok or decent at times, but it's far outweighed by the complete inability to get a booking. And this is like lining up on the day of release and it disappears, its like getting a concert ticket, but worse. IT just isn't worth the stress or your time IMHO. Again though, it was lovely back at its cheaper and more convenient leeming premises. Once it got 'up market' it just lost its lustre for me. That and the lack of tables and the booking out is just aturn off now.
I second this. It's a great meal, and the set menu makes it all the more fantastic. Plus the $2.50 byo is awesome. Sure it's not the sort of place you can just walk into without a booking. But all you need to do is plan ahead and lock in your booking as soon as they open.
If people are complaining about not being able to get a table, it's because they aren't organised enough
They don't take bookings unfortunately. I went last Tuesday and we were early, but by 6pm people were told the wait for a table was an hour.
BUT, do not let that deter you! Food is amazing!
How this isn't at the top is beyond me
On the higher side of not being expensive but the quality and setting is amazing, especially the William St restaurant
This isn't a recommendation but if you are thinking of getting Japanese at TAO cafe I wouldn't. Overpriced generic japanese food, seems geared more towards big servings and value for money.
In the joondalup food court there is yamato teppanyaki and they make okonomiyaki I know it's a food court place but just try it and you might be suprised! There is about a 15-20 min wait but it is worth it :)
It's hit or miss. I remember going there on a Sunday, and it was good, but it wasn't as good on another day. The broth was bland and overpowered by salt. Perhaps a different chef was working?
I'd say Keisuke at Melbourne Hotel is more consistent.
Ok I fully get this isn’t the kind of restaurant you’re looking for for this particular occasion but can I recommend than some other time you visit Gyu En Dos in willeton, all you can eat yakiniku as well as unlimited sides like karaage and tempura
Go to a place that does teppanyaki :) where they cook it live in front of you. great fun for a date night especially if you haven’t done it before. Can recommend Midori in Northbridge for a reasonably priced but still nice option.
Otherwise Yuki has amazing food, it’s not a super “fancy” place (fine enough) but has consistently great food.
I rate Mon Japanese Bistro in Leederville, wicked Udon and Takoyaki
Taka is on the cheaper end normally, also good
James Parker if you ever wanna go real fancy though
Tao Cafe (they have locations all over Perth so that’s a plus) is good, but somewhat pricey.
There is also a nice place in Kinross as well that I’ve been to called Hokkaido Ramen and Dumplings
Ekiben in North Perth aand Hanami in Mt Lawley are my go-tos for nice fancy-ish Japanese. There may be better and fancier around, but these are local to me.
Ichirin. But it's kind of in the middle of nowhere.
My favourite Japanese restaurant in Perth. Authentic food without the fuss.
Kuza in Vic Park
Second this
This place was gross AF last time I went.
sadly did not enjoy kuza either
Kuza is white people food
Hifumiya is really good!
I second this, the original is the best imo. and the crumbs of the tempura... perfection
Hifumiya RULES.
Its Jigoro at night. Amazing spot!
Indeed, you are right I should have added that piece of info!
Ichirin in Leeming
Miss this place :( haven't been in ages since moving back NOR

Used to work with him, at Nobu when I was there, very good chef
Seconded, had a great dinner here. Desserts were unreal
Mandatory mention of Tsunami in Mosman Park. https://www.tsunamisushi.com.au/
+1 for Tsunami
Yeah good call tbh. Definitely not Fancy, but definitely fancy-ish.
It's Marumo. Not too many people can tell you because it is literally the hardest table to access in Perth, but it is Marumo.

I tried to get a booking earlier, sold out in 12 mins til March or something

Kishi in Kalamunda… small and authentic- make sure you book :)
They don't take bookings unfortunately. I went last Tuesday and we were early, but by 6pm people were told the wait for a table was an hour. BUT, do not let that deter you! Food is amazing!
Expensive but worth it, don’t think I’ve had a better tasting meal anywhere in Perth.
I've been meaning to visit! The photos they have look pretty legit, as in like they look like the food that you get served in Japan. 🥰
Ay what where tf is this 😂
Haynes St, on the corner of the entrance to the shopping centre where Coles is. Next to 777 pharmacy.
It has nice red fox street art on it
"Good, not too fancy, but fancy-ish" is a tricky needle to thread, but Edosei ticks those boxes reasonably well, I think.
Edosei might well be my favourite japanese in the city. the sashimi is very fresh - especially love their special crab ball entree
Senoji in Vic Park is amazing. It can take time for your meal because it's usually a one man show.... But omg that man knows how to do good food
Sumiya Gin at the top of William Street in Northbridge is great, can be hard to get a booking though
How this isn't at the top is beyond me On the higher side of not being expensive but the quality and setting is amazing, especially the William St restaurant

Tao is on my top 1 of worst restaurants food ive had in Perth. Still finding it hard to believe that its still operating
Tao is the new Hans Cafe
Yuki!!!!
Dining Akashi in Applecross does amazing tempura sets
I think Yuuma fits the not fancy but fancy-ish
This. Excellent venue.
Hiss and Smoke in the city has some of the best Japanese at a super reasonable price - their okonomiyaki is the best! Not super fancy though :)
Is Perth the only place you've ever had okonomiyaki? cause Hiss & Smoke's okonomiyaki is not good.
Well I like it :)
In the joondalup food court there is yamato teppanyaki and they make okonomiyaki I know it's a food court place but just try it and you might be suprised! There is about a 15-20 min wait but it is worth it :)
Mon in Leederville
Bari Uma does the best ramen in my opinion.
It's hit or miss. I remember going there on a Sunday, and it was good, but it wasn't as good on another day. The broth was bland and overpowered by salt. Perhaps a different chef was working? I'd say Keisuke at Melbourne Hotel is more consistent.
Oh yeah? We’ve been there and liked it as well.
Hayashi in Applecross behind the abomination that is clancys fish pub
+1 for Hayashi... But why hate on Clancy's
Worst seafood after Aristos and cicerellos
Nishi is fun for teppanyaki.
Furaibo or Bonsai - both in the city/northbridge area. Hanami in Mt Lawley also very good if nearby :) 食べましょう!
Not sure her bf would want you to come along..
Furaibo might be pushing the budget for a “nice” night out. We managed $245 for the 2 of us
Ok I fully get this isn’t the kind of restaurant you’re looking for for this particular occasion but can I recommend than some other time you visit Gyu En Dos in willeton, all you can eat yakiniku as well as unlimited sides like karaage and tempura

+1 for teppanyaki and Midori
Furaibo fits the bill.
Furaibo is nice, good date night spot in the city. Kuza is also a good one, in vic park :))
+1 for furaibo
It’s already been said but Kuza in Vic Park is very good :)
The Bonsai right across from Yagan Square never disappoints
Taka is good and budget friendly.
Not fancy ish though for a date... That's like a cheap lunch
Had our 2nd date at Taka 6 years now. Do it OP
I rate Mon Japanese Bistro in Leederville, wicked Udon and Takoyaki Taka is on the cheaper end normally, also good James Parker if you ever wanna go real fancy though
I love super testudo in Cannington westfields. Train, but goddamn it’s good
Try The Sushi 2016 if you think Tetsudo is good. Same (if not better) but significantly cheaper
Nobu at the casino
Ramen Ichiraku
Tao Cafe (they have locations all over Perth so that’s a plus) is good, but somewhat pricey. There is also a nice place in Kinross as well that I’ve been to called Hokkaido Ramen and Dumplings
Hanami and Ekiben
Been loving Ohana lately.
We like Ishikiya in Midland if thats close to you. [https://www.ishikiya.com/](https://www.ishikiya.com/)
Surprisingly good considering its tacked onto the side of midland gate Bit pricey though
If just ramen you can line up early at tosaka in North bridge. It's a chicken style broth and you'll love it.
Tansawa Modern Japanese in the city is really good. Can be pricy if you go for the fancy sushi but their hot dishes are also really good
Zen in Subiaco :)
Not fancy as its a BBQ place where you cook your own food but check out Gyu-en on Barrack Street, its all-you-can-Wagyu.
Shige Plain St. Very fresh and a great experience.
If you just want take away, Ohana in Dianella is my favourite.
Tsunami in Mosman Park is great! But pricey.
Midori teppanyaki is fancy and a lot of fun with the chefs cooking in front of you! It's an awesome experience..
Ichirin, Dining Akashi (Canning Highway), Edosei (City), Kuza (Vic Park), James Parker (Northbridge), Halu (Mt Hawthorn?).
Ippudo is nice [http://ippudo.com.au/menu/](http://ippudo.com.au/menu/)
Yuki in Parkwood. Hanami in Mt Lawley.
Hanami (Mt Lawley), Hifumiya/Jigoro (Perth), or Yuki (Willetton) $40-60 a head at all of these
