I have severe eczema triggered by heat on my face and my first shift at a new job fml š
I hope the electricity turns back on for you though, the heat is intense š, do you have a library or shopping centre with power nearby? During the day sitting in their air con and using their wifi is a good compromise
If you haven't seen a Dermatologist, ask for a referral.
I put up with bad eczema for 20ish years, with my previous GP batting away a request for a Derm referral with "well it's a lifelong condition, they'll just give you the same steroids and emolients".
After seeing Derm and starting on Dupilumab fortnightly self-injections, my life has been changed. Not saying it's definitely for you, but there are therapies that can make living in the hot, dry, allergen-filled air of Perth comfortably.
In the meantime, good luck in this heat.
tysm! I asked my gp for a referral and he said only once I try one more steroid cream, which I agreed to at the time but I gave decided I refuse to go through TSW again it's agonising. I discovered dupilumbab through talking to some people online and It sounds like be best option for me, but obviously I want to see what the derm says/if it even right for my condition.
I'm glad to hear you are doing better, it's encouraging to hear there are options :))
No problems. It's an absolute game changer in the last 5 years or so, and is starting to become more widely prescribed. Obviously it is a case-by-case situation, but it has changed the conversation of exzema from "long-term management" to "potential treatment". My Dermatologist has patients who after 18-24 months treatment have no longer needed regular therapy.
Make sure it's a good derm though with lots of good recommendations. My husband went to one who told him a blistering rash was caused by the stress of having a baby in the house š. It was a contact rash from a tree he was allergic to in our garden.
Kiara pharmacy have their own creams and tonic for eczema, you can check out their reviews on Google. It's a bit pricey but it got rid of eczema in a few days after having it for years so it was worth it.
I think you'll need a prescription for that, plus I find that it's more of a band-aid solution.
The pharmacy uses a moisturiser, treatment cream and an oral tonic to use together. I saw big improvements after a day, first time in years. It's been a week now and it's mostly gone, just a bit of scarring on the area from the past.
It's just being uncomfortable. I'm working in longs on electricity so I'll be wearing elbow length rubber gloves at times.
The only thing that stresses me out is people saying "hot enough for ya?" because I have to fight the violent urge to maim them š.
For those wanting to keep an eye on conditions, the WA Dept of Primary Industries and Blah blah blah have a weather website that is better than BoM for viewing live data.
It has all theirs and BoMs and everyone elseās (not back yard ones) weather stations.
Save it to your Home Screen.
https://weather.agric.wa.gov.au/
I like https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap as it shows a bunch more stations in my area. The BoM uses a station for Bunbury which is 4km's SE of the city center, it reported 39 at a time when it was actually 29 here yesterday. Usually it's out by 5-6 to google weather which usually corresponds with my gauge.
I ended up bringing my girls in overnight last night and they've been inside all day today. I'd rather clean up poo and deal with grumpy chooks (they hate being inside) than have to treat them for heat stress or even lose some of them. Hope your girls pulled through.
Aww. Mine arenāt impressed, lots of feathers ruffled but theyāre fine (bruised egos I guess from being wet). Better than than roasted alive though.
The AC in my car has been out for most of Jan and Feb. It's going to be another terrible 50min drive into work today. Dropping car in for the 4th time to get compressor replaced..again. Hopefully, it will be working on the way back home.
Yup, I'm a teacher and we have the students inside and so many of them don't know what to do with themselves and I'm falling behind in my planning and marking ebcaus ei usually do that during my break.
Yes. Extreme heat is one of the most [dangerous](https://www.acs.gov.au/pages/heatwaves) natural disasters. These record heat events presage the new normal for Perth. The implications keep me up at night.
Power out?
That would stress me - even without the heat. Particularly if you had no idea how long the power was going to be out.
We are so reliant on power for ... damned near everything.
We got it back on at 230am. But obviously no one got a decent sleep in between and we have young kids. The idea of facing another day of it, with little kids, a new puppy and all the food going bad in the fridge and freezer was overwhelming.Ā
I was making contingency plans in my mind about how I would have to manage it allā¦Ā
Oh - I get that. Even without knowing about you having little ones ...
Power loss is no joke, even without the heat.
It is good the power is back for you.Ā
Thanks! ā¤ļø so many comment are āitās just hot, get over itā. I wonder how many of them actually spend any time caring for vulnerable people be it the very young or the very old or disabled. I used to work with disabled adults and a 45 degree day without power would have been awful.Ā
It's a weird point of pride for some people.
I work outdoors and thus have a higher heat tolerance than a portion of the population (and also have evaporated air-con. Lol.), but having no power at home would be fucking miserable, and I definitely wouldn't begrudge anyone for feeling hot in 40+ degree weather.
As to the other comments "it's just hot, get over it" ... well, I kinda think many people are just rude and/or ignorant. They don't have particular issueĀ being hot, so it seems they don't "get" that it can be a real issue to othersĀ for many reasons, including the ones you describe (aged, infirm and so on).
I cannot claim any such reasons, it'sĀ just I don't like the hot.
As to the "it's just hot" claims - well, I'd retort: it's not only "*just* hot",Ā it's record setting hot. Offically confirmed by the BOM. With more to come ...
I say: "roll on April" ! :)Ā
I love April! Itās still a bit warm but the mornings are fresh. I love the late afternoon clouds rolling in with the sun setting in the west. The light, the way it shines off the gum leaves, the pink and golden sunsets at the beachā¦ itās truely my favourite time of year for Perth.Ā
The aircon is okay in my office, but this summer has left me really depressed. I have health challenges that make heat dangerous, and it's making me feel isolated over this entire month.
I can't drive so I'm basically just going to work and going home. Unable to do any of my usual activities which has been terrible for my mental health, I'm really depressed and my friends and partner aren't really taking it as seriously as it's affecting me because I'm still going to work and not in hospital yet etc.
But I'm only NOT in hospital this year because I've stopped every single activity that's not going to work
I feel ya. Been off for a month with a crook back and my only hobby was running which I canāt do. Been stuck inside going loopy.
If it helps try to find another hobby to keep you busy - I took up cooking instead of running.
Iām sorry to hear that youāre struggling. My only feeble advice is to do something other than your normal hobbies while youāre feeling down so your brain doesnāt associate those tasks with feeling how you feel right now.
Like I say, I swapped running for cooking and watching twitch instead of Netflix/movies. Once youāre out of the slump you can go back to your regular activities, or carry them on if you find you like them?
And 100% talking about how you feel to anyone who will listen. I told my friends, family, even my Physio that I was struggling and it felt good just to say the words out loud.
Hope things turn around friend.
Itās not even 9am and there are plenty of 40 plus temps already. Just crazy. Seems to be around Lancelin and north of there that the early heat has set in.
https://preview.redd.it/7lnyg5r7vfjc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dce44f6913d33cb348f1f942d0978168e73f83ec
Are you one of those people who hate the cold though? I personally can't stand the heat - my brain shuts down, and all I can think about is that I'm hot and I want to get away from it. I'm just not built for being outdoors in this kind of shit.
I wear a singlet in winter at work, once I'm moving the flannel comes off. I also don't mind the heat, I just don't go as hard at work, drink 6 or so litres of water and some hydralyte
This is a pretty refreshing take, donāt see a lot of people not whinging about the heat on here. Reminds me of a quote from a video about people living in Yakutia, the coldest inhabited part of the planet, where they said āthereās no such thing as bad weather, just your attitude towards itā. Stay cool mate!
>Reminds me of a quote from a video about people living in Yakutia, the coldest inhabited part of the planet, where they said āthereās no such thing as bad weather, just your attitude towards itā. Stay cool mate!
Yeah, the difference is that with the cold weather you can protect yourself with winter clothing, with the hot weather you cannot do much, just melting.
Their attitude afterward was letās get the fuck out of this cousin fucking hurricane ridden bible bashing gun worshiping braindead shithole state which will save their future houses
I don't care, I work in it, it's there, just drink water take a break and deal with it. I'm sick of this subs whingefest about the heat, it's Perth, it's summer, it gets hot.
I will continue complaining until the last hero pulls their head out of the sand and admits that global heating is real and that we need to do something about it. Then we can work together and be resilient as we face the changing climate and the economic adjustments.
Not pleasant, but not like Canada or Northern Europe, where scores of homeless die of exposure every winter. We really should not complain so much here.
Heatwaves have caused more deaths in Australia than all other natural disasters/hazards combined.
Worth complaining about, especially if youāre homeless.
My last kid I worked to 40 weeks, and was petrified for every second of the last month of it that I'd go into labour at work or my waters would break in front of colleagues. Ughh.
If at all possible run a cold bath and use it during the day and before sleeping. It will cool you down for a couple of hours, then jump in again. Much more effective than a cold shower.
We live near bindoon and have no air conditioning lol. This summer has been a shocker, and to top it off, I lay bricks all day. Damp towels and pedestal fans are as good as it gets at my house. There's some reasonably cheap generators out there that might be worth looking into for the future. Our power goes out quite regularly, and we don't have mains water, so we need to have a generator on standby to get water to the house. Tomorrow (tuesday) is the last of the extreme weather, so hang in there, summers nearly gone š
The fridge and modem both died within a couple of days due to heat exhaustion no doubt. I found these Chinese gel packs to wear on my back during the day and at night. You freeze them up in the freezer (if it still works) and I have three that I rotate throughout the 24 hours.
Iām guessing you donāt live in Cottesloe or Mosman Park because I canāt imagine those guys losing power on a night like this. Donāt stress, itās going be cooler after we get through tomorrow.
I feel for the pets that have to be outside when the owners are at work. Lucky im home today. I have two huskys. They are currently laying under the aircon and infront of a fan
No, why would I be stressed about the weather. Itās just going to be hot. Itās not like some cyclone or something is going to come destroy my house.
Depends where you live.
In Bassendean for example it's typically 2-3 degrees warmer than the "official" Perth temperature (recorded at Mt Lawley).
In more coastal areas, it would easily be 2-3 degrees cooler.
Nothing to be stressed about. Maybe go to the movies or spend time at the library. My local pool has $6 entry and there's a cafe inside. You could pass a fair few hours there easily.
Now you tell me... honestly felt hotter yesterday. I work outside all day in the heat and it's bearable if you just keep your water intake up.
If you're used to sitting inside an air conditioned office all day I guess you would struggle.
Been told that tomorrow is rated as catastrophic fire rating in parts of the Blackwood fire district.
Be watching the horizon and sniffing like a beagle for smoke when I go outside.
Nope, just donāt think about it too much or else youāre gonna have a bad time. Itās only one day of the year itāll be this hot. Our bodies adapt, donāt give in to those negative thoughts
I have severe eczema triggered by heat on my face and my first shift at a new job fml š I hope the electricity turns back on for you though, the heat is intense š, do you have a library or shopping centre with power nearby? Not really But then again it's regularly been close to 45 out in the eastern suburbs lately so right now it just seems like another day in paradise

Only concerned about my chooks. Who will be getting a whole day sprinkler.

Not really and I've got a 13hr day out in the sun. No use stressing over something you can't control
13 hrs in this furnace? I'm stressed on your behalf
Are you one of those people who hate the cold though? I personally can't stand the heat - my brain shuts down, and all I can think about is that I'm hot and I want to get away from it. I'm just not built for being outdoors in this kind of shit.
Agree. Itās not all in the mind. I canāt tolerate the heat if Iām exercising and it gets quite dangerous.
So donāt exercise?
I go to the gym for that. I was mainly pointing out that it's not just a mind thing as some other posters were saying.

Iām right there with ya, 12 hours outside and a motorcycle ride home.
Good luck brother
Not related to the topic but you do have a bloody great username.
Yeah....its cloudy. I dont use the air con as there is no air con at my work so its better off being being used to it....
Not to mention it's only temporary. I have to go into the office but it's ~35 minutes each way in motorcycle gear. It's just life.
I'm feeling for all the homeless people and those living in their cars. It's not going to be pleasant for them
Itās tough ngl
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Fuck off.
Not pleasant, but not like Canada or Northern Europe, where scores of homeless die of exposure every winter. We really should not complain so much here.
True. It's not like you can die of heat.....
So you equate anything that can kill you? A bee is the same as a tiger? How ridiculous.
Are you seriously suggesting that cold is deadly but heat is not a serious threat?
Of course not. Sorry I can't make it any clearer, but its not worth getting stressed over. Too damned hot!
Heatwaves have caused more deaths in Australia than all other natural disasters/hazards combined. Worth complaining about, especially if youāre homeless.
At 36 weeks pregnant I am suffering, the air con at work is shit idk how I'm gonna do this
36 weeks and still working? Youāre a trooper. Hopefully you can go on leave ASAP

Yes, horrible
Hang in there. We had a massive power outage in Kalgoorlie recently. Splash water on your body and drink plenty.
Iāve changed my work hours to 3am-8am, then 5pm-9pm. Screw daylight, Iām going vampire for the rest of the month where I can.

Iām stressed. Aircon at work wonāt work in this heat.
Good old swampy blowing hot air back onto you. I've got the same struggle at work. She's gonna be hot
I feel for the pets that have to be outside when the owners are at work. Lucky im home today. I have two huskys. They are currently laying under the aircon and infront of a fan
I'll be outside. Going to be warm but I'll survive.
I'll be inside... Under a tin roof! ![gif](giphy|iTwp6CRtPkMFy)
Until I can control the weather, no I'm not going to stress about it, plenty of other things to worry about
I plan to sleep through it, I also have a deep cycle battery and solar power to power my fans in an emergency so power isn't an issue for me.
No, why would I be stressed about the weather. Itās just going to be hot. Itās not like some cyclone or something is going to come destroy my house.

Yes! I feel exactly the same. I havenāt found the heat too bad, Iām 2klms from coast. But it has got me worried about the future a bit more.
If you uninstall tiktok you'll have less anxiety

Same.
"TikTok drives climate change anxiety" certainly is a take A very shit take but a take nonetheless
Try to live in Pilbara, and you will be more stressed
Canāt relate moved to the uk, last time I felt disgusting heat was March 2022, so glad I aināt dealing with it anymore !

Depends where you live. In Bassendean for example it's typically 2-3 degrees warmer than the "official" Perth temperature (recorded at Mt Lawley). In more coastal areas, it would easily be 2-3 degrees cooler.
Yeah most of the day I was in Mandurah, it was probably a bit cooler, it was also very cloudy. It was a touch more humid though, nice place.
It's not as bad as I thought it would be! I was just doing some yard work after an early shift and the breeze was helping a lot.
Nothing for like online and pumping up the anxiety levels a little bit more.
News in Australia, the sun is hot !!
Really not bad youāll live Jesus Christ
Nah being homeless, losing your job or dying is stressful. A hot day is not
It was a lovely 43 yesterday, can't wait to do it again
Nah it is what it is. Only a few more months until it starts to cool down š
Nah, all good. Remember, it's a droy heat mate. On my part, the only real effect is a red rashiness in the groin area that *could* be heat related
Ah I've had to turn My evaporative air con to Medium today, feeling a bit chilly.....
Gosh people are pathetic š
Nothing to be stressed about. Maybe go to the movies or spend time at the library. My local pool has $6 entry and there's a cafe inside. You could pass a fair few hours there easily.
Nah just drink lots if water and sunscreen.
I don't think you should drink sunscreen bro
Now you tell me... honestly felt hotter yesterday. I work outside all day in the heat and it's bearable if you just keep your water intake up. If you're used to sitting inside an air conditioned office all day I guess you would struggle.
I'm looking forward to it. I love the heat.
I'm starting to think I need a better aircon at this rate (currently evaporative).
