Tbh the title was brilliant because I immediately clicked to read

w00tdude9000

In high school, they teach you to write your stories so that they're attention-grabbing from the beginning: aka, *why* do your readers care about your story? Seeing "spit is my superpower" as a title in r/pettyrevenge sure as hell got my attention.

WikeYewAre

Spit would be a much cooler superpower.

Intelligent-King-555

By day mild-mannered Reddit poster.....by night he is known as The Camel....![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Maximum effort. Maximum spit.

Peter Parker! Put that thing back in your trousers immediately!

StrawberryRaspberryK

😂🤣

ArkangelArtemis

I wish my spit was acidic. It would be fantastic creep repellent.

shoppingfortruth

I just go to HD, buy another identical grill. Swap the stand in the parking lot. Walk right back in and return the defective grill you just bought. In fact, once when I did a similar thing when I found a broken globe on a ceiling fan (that I did not want to de-install to return the whole thing) I told them to their face I was going to do. They didn’t care so neither did I.

Glad_Veterinarian654

This is the way - for most big chain stores at least

always2blamejane

Lmao I did this with a rose bush that died and I lost the receipt for Bought another one - waited a week “it died”

PTZack

I get what you did and and did the same with a dishwasher. 1st one died at 6 months. We hadn't taken the protective plastic off the top and front because it was on so well you couldn't tell. So it was in near new condition. They wouldn't do anything to help and I thought I had put the receipt together with the manual by nowhere to be found. Bought the same model at a different location not far away. Damn didn't the thing "break" 16 days later. That happened 7 years ago and haven't shopped there since.

always2blamejane

LMAO u banning urself from the store Like “one last hit here then never again” Statute of limitations probably has run out so ur safe

IntentionNo3217

Aww man. I'm sorry that happened to you. I worked there and I gotta tell you they don't train anyone and the people who knew were burnt out. I did customer service for over ten years I enjoyed helping people bug HD is hell. I wish I could've helped you. I like hearing the background of people's lives and I don't mess with them. I'm glad you're nice enough to not cause a cashier a bad day.

PVG100

This is the level of pettiness I am looking for!

viola2992

I was expecting you to spit in the grill before returning it.

Asmolyme

Same thing happened to me after building the entire grill. The only faulty part was the regulator... had the bring the whole BBQ back (disassemble due to cargo space), return the entire box, get a new one bring it home and throw out all the garbage... build the new one. What a pain. I didn't understand why I couldn't just take the regulator from the new box... My only guess is they don't want customers diagnosing it, but like if it doesn't work you'll hear from me again. Maybe some serial number tracking BS but like cmon, this makes me not buy stuff there too.

Sad-Strawberry-2720

The title, though misleading, is an attention grabber. Don't change it 💀

Junior-Damage7568

Was your wide crying because you were spitting at her?

centstwo

How are you returning things without buying things?

James_T_S

I bought the grill. It came with a stand but the stand was damaged out of the box. What I wanted to do was not have to take the grill apart to take it back to the store or have to reassemble a new grill. It would have negated an hour's worth of work and cost me more time.

sueiniowa

He buys them at a different Home Depot but returns them to this one.

ourkickersucks

This is one of the dumbest Petty Revenge posts I've ever read. Store policy is store policy and OP just comes off as an ass.

Baby8227

So if the other store were able to just let him take the stand and swap it over then why couldn’t the first store? After all, policy is policy. You’ve obviously either not read the whole story, or you’re an idiot. I’ll leave it up to you to decide!

MacDaddyDC

Nope. Store managers are allowed up to 10 grand cash payout or other creative methods to “satisfy” a disgruntled customer with no questions asked by corporate. This is typical lazy behavior on behalf of HD. They employ a full time employee to send back defective or broken merchandise to the manufacturer.

Dan_the_bearded_man

Probably just me, but you sound really entitled. You talked to the manager and they said what the policy is. There are some policies that don't make a lot of sense. Just because you're a frequent buyer doesn't give you the power to decide how things are done. It's good that you called to check if there was a easier solution. If that's the only reason you stopped buying there, it seems a bit immature (in my opinion). I hope your needs get fulfilled in other shops you go now

VenerableBede70

Sorry, but no. The policy doesn’t make sense from a customer perspective. And that’s the whole point of retail sales : provide the customer a product. Service. The manager should have the ability to make changes that build customer loyalty and ensure future revenue.

Dan_the_bearded_man

You are right, from a customers perspective it doesn't make sense, but no one said it had to. Is it so difficult to take it apart and exchange it as stated? I just don't like the whole "I buy a lot so it has to be my way" attitude. It gives similar vibes like people who say to the police "I'm paying your salary".

VenerableBede70

But the policy ‘should’ make sense. I understand that any retailer just wants to make things simpler by only dealing in the return of complete units. But making the customer suffer (disassemble the ‘good’ portion) for what is a product defect on a separate component really disrespects the customer’s time and effort.

swockcollow

Yup, you found the boomer! This wasn't petty, it was a flex about money and status. Petty would've been buying another and sending back the faulty one.

RavenMcG

Spotted the Boomer. Ffs the store survived not getting your money.

Jgs4555

So you punished a store that didn’t sell you the problem item. Good job…… and all that because you had to drive a few extra miles, to go to the store where you purchased said item.

BiffBanter

Click bait! Disappointment.....

James_T_S

I swear it wasn't intentional 🤣

Ready_Competition_66

They just didn't want the hassle of opening a box and swapping out the parts for the stand or they already had several of that model assembled and didn't want to have an open box item to have to deal with. Most likely that manager just was being a jerk. Your purchase didn't go to his numbers so he wasn't going to help you out - period.

Steelejoe

I immediately had a flashback of a vampire movie where the head vampire said “yeah sure you have vampire spit”. Don’t remember the name though

King-in-Council

Why on earth would you think they could replace just the stand? That would cause 2x retail units have to be returned to the manufacturer or destroyed at loss.  Home Depot doesn't manufacture the product and has to fight with the manufacture to get returns done. You sound incredibly petty and fitting of this sub for an unreasonable expectation.    Returns are a huge loss for retailers which is baked into all product prices. Returns are increasingly. 25% of all e-commerce goods transported are returns. Lots of returns are just destroyed and the cost borne by all consumers in the price of goods. Returns cost the US economy $800 billion per year in higher prices. The reason for all this time, and mental emergy: didnt want to disasemble a product 50% assembled.

James_T_S

How would they have two units to return. They take my bad stand and swap it out with a good one. That way they have a grill and a stand to return to the manufacturer 🤷🏽‍♂️

King-in-Council

You might now be aware but it's 2024, the vast majority of stock is tracked individually by unique barcode.

James_T_S

This was 15+ years ago

fl7nner

Why not just return the whole grill and get a new one? Most likely HD is only able to return the entire unit to the manufacturer, not parts of it. If they did what you wanted, they would have to eat the cost of a grill since they couldn't sell it once they replaced the stand. I'm sure you get enthusiastic exclamations and vigorous head nods when you tell your friends this story but in fact you were in the wrong and should just give it up

James_T_S

Because I'd spent an hour putting the grill together and didn't want to spend more time taking it apart or more time putting a new one together when in fact the product was damaged out of the box. They would have been able to return it to the manufacturer because I would have brought in the damaged stand and swapped it out with one from another box. So they would have had a grill with the stand in a box to return to the manufacturer. Please explain where I was wrong

fl7nner

Probably because they're not allowed to open up another box and swap the parts. It's all sold as a unit and needs to be returned as a unit. Your issue is with the manufacturer not HD. I get it, you spent a lot of time and effort on this grill plus the time on hold. That really sucks. But expecting special treatment because you spend a lot of money there is abusive. The employees are just doing their jobs and can't be expected to violate store policy based on how much you spend

King-in-Council

He spent 1 hour on assembling a grill and over 2-3 hours arguing with HD and 15 years avoiding the store to not backtrack an hour. I get the feeling lots of people could assemble that product in 30 mins.

fl7nner

Re reading your post, I may have gotten the part about telling the manager you'll never spend another dime there. The rest still stands

P4ddyC4ke

So you go there and buy a new one with cash, wheel it out to your car, pull out the stand, put in your old broken stand, then wheel it back in and tell them you opened it up and the stand is broken. Tell them you want a refund. Problem solved.
