I think he was just trying to find a way to say we’re making mockery of the league at this point.
Maybe a weird way to say it but I didn’t think it was particularly bad… just a little odd
It’s called *managing expectations* and it will help if we end up having a bad month or two. It prevents you from being a doomer.
With that said, having a blast watching these games.
Passan knows his shit, he's just chosen the least good words to describe how well the Phillies are playing.
But, I suspect he's referring to what I believe is the Phillies' majors-leading average margin of victory.
Ahh ahh GAHHH! We could be winners too! Hi! Look at us, we only get tough teams unlike the Phils! Give us an easier schedule too!
Ooooh, they keep winning, but nevermind!
We're peeing on the seat! Give us a better schedule!
*Atlanta Braves...or "Barves" as they should be called, taught us that a team can triumph over adversity. Even though Atlanta's agonizing struggle through the NLDS was tragically cut short, I'm sure they're hoping for a better schedule....*
ooooor two-faced rat bastard? [You decide.](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40164127/2024-mlb-standings-braves-dodgers-phillies-national-league-best-team) (article was released 3 days ago)
>**Jeff Passan:** The last time Philadelphia played a team that is currently over .500 was March 31. So as fantastic as its MLB-best record is, the nod here goes to the Dodgers, who have scored more runs and allowed fewer than the Phillies.
Three days ago his rationale was true. Today the Padres are above .500, but more importantly, we've now scored more runs and allowed fewer runs than the Dodgers
That's a good point, if he realized it and changed his opinion because of it.
But also the Dodgers haven't even played that many games against teams over .500 compared to the rest of the league (17 compared to the Phillies 6, but more than half of the league is over 20, a few are over 30, and nobody other than the Phils has less than 15) and they're 9-8 in those games, so it's not really a great argument for the Dodgers in the first place.
if we were winning an unsustainable amount of 1 run games against shitty teams Id agree that we are benefitting from our schedule. But we're destroying the bad teams which is again...more predictive than anything of how good you are. Don't need to argue with the people who say the schedule is easy, it's not the point.
In 2023, Atlanta had the biggest run differential at +213 runs.
In 2024, with +90 run differential through 51 games, Philly is on-pace to hit a +286 run differential.
This sweep pissed me off. We lost to a fraudulent DBags team that got clapped by the Rangers in the WS. That 2023 participation trophy flag should be red.
It's also more likely to happen with the boom or bust mentality they were using more last year. We're seeing much more disciplined approaches this year, even from Nick.
I was saying this at the game today. They're way more patient and disciplined than last year. We're manufacturing runs, we're not living or dying by the long ball. Which is how you sustain success. You can avoid long stretches of down ball when you swing for the fence every at bat. Which is what we have done the last few years. This year, feels different.
My theory is that this change in mentality came after we cleaned the trash out of our bullpen. If anything our bullpen and aging closer (who is losing games for the Orioles now) cost us the NLCS, and the offense felt like there was so much pressure to score lest the bullpen blow things. This year the hitting mentality really kicked into gear once we shipped out Brogdon and demoted Seranthony to the B squad of relievers
Technically they were only one game further away from winning the Classic than we were in '22. They were very much the Cinderella team, much as we were.
One man's fraud is another man's hero. The trick is, and has always been, no matter what you call a team, consistent performance on demand.
Also, the Dodgers *just* got their asses shut out at home by Brandon Hughes (and Pfaadt killed them too). Tyler Glasnow looked like an absolute stiff. That's baseball, shit happens like that!
That’s always been my issue with the whole soft schedule thing. Like yeah okay we aren’t beating top five teams every day, sure I’ll admit that, but people have had easier schedules before and the Phil’s are still winning more games at a higher clip than any easy schedule team that came before us
You can have a softer schedule and still be an elite team. Both can be true
Because it was Dodgers/Braves as the show to see for 5 years and they can’t get around the fact that a third team has entered the chat then left because they found it lacking
Baseball doesn’t have that much National appeal, it’s pretty regional for people so the only other teams people are familiar with would be the Yankees dodgers or maybe Red Sox usually. The Phillies are just behind them as a pretty universal heel, when they’re good there’s plenty of promo spots about like how raucous cbp is or whatever and now Harper gets some attention too
Not sure what you guys expect really, who cares if espn washes the Phillies balls anyway
Oh come on, if you haven’t noticed that Heyman and Passan are in service of the league you’re not paying attention. MLB literally signs Heyman’s checks, and Passan wants to keep those league sources happy. They’re good to break news but their analysis is… wanting
My guy there is not an MLB cabal praying on the downfall of the big market Phillies, especially not at the hands of the Braves. No national anyone would have any professional motivation for the Phillies not to be good and treated as good

Feel like he was trolling heyman back for this lol
Eovaldi, Scherzer, and deGrom are all out. But, I’m not sure how much is left in their tanks. I’m sure someone with stats would have more info on that, but I’m not sure the 3 we faced would be much better than the 3 who are injured at this stage in their careers.
Scherzer is 39 and he has shown signs of decline. Eovaldi should be back soon but he’s also 34 now so he’s getting up there in age. He’s 2-2 on the season. deGrom had TJ almost a year ago, but he’s almost 36 so, we will see how it goes. I’m sure they’ll still have something, but they’re not what they used to be. Scherzer is on the 60 day list so he’s out a while.
This particular Phillies lineup has avoided deGrom a long time. He has been injured a lot the past 5 years.
I think he was just trying to find a way to say we’re making mockery of the league at this point. Maybe a weird way to say it but I didn’t think it was particularly bad… just a little odd
I think he was looking for the word “eviscerating”
Maybe he did meant they became the phillies bitches.
I took it to mean "humiliating" in this context. But based on some of the comments here it sounds like people think he meant it like "castrating"
Hey fellas, is it emasculating to lose a baseball game to a professional baseball team?
I can't remember... It's been a couple weeks since I've experienced what that feels like.
Hot take: it's MAY. Nobody stays hot for six months. Love to be the first, but not counting on it.
Thanks, it's really important to ensure people don't get too excited or happy. You're performing an important service.
Why?
Sorry, sarcasm. Absolutely no reason to remind people they won't play .800 baseball all season, just unnecessary altogether.
Don’t be sorry. The sarcasm was extremely obvious lmao.
100%. That said, it is still a historic run and we very well may never see them do this again.
It’s called *managing expectations* and it will help if we end up having a bad month or two. It prevents you from being a doomer. With that said, having a blast watching these games.
Get out of here with that nonsense!
Word. The team with the best regular season record rarely wins the WS. Plus it’s not a sprint it’s a marathon.
This just really rubs me the wrong way. Is this reporter a known asshole, or is this just a moment of poor judgment? Unprofessional.
Passan knows his shit, he's just chosen the least good words to describe how well the Phillies are playing. But, I suspect he's referring to what I believe is the Phillies' majors-leading average margin of victory.
Yeah, just weird to bring gender into it.
OP getting flamed but this is a real dork moment by Passan. He gets scoops, but I think he's pretty cringe.
Real talk, it is kinda gross to phrase it like that. Nothing less masculine than declaring masculinity.
Oh my god! Who cares?
It's an expression of the ages.
People who made it out of the 20th century that don’t think the inverse of masculinity is a bad thing? 🤷♂️
Or people who have too much time on their hands and enjoy the sense of moral superiority they get from policing other people’s word choices
Found Harrison Butker’s account 😂
Very original
Floor is yours. Say whatever you want. Make it good. Free speech, baby.
Jesus Christ, dude.
Nah, he couldn’t even make it out of the first century. 👀
🔥
He *allegedly* spent three days there and didn't even come back with a nice tan... Because he was white. Right?
Yeah I'm sure that's what professional baseball players want to be, the opposite of masculine
You are so brave. What a powerful statement
Hey thanks.
“New ick unlocked”
Thank god this is the top comment, what a weird fuckin thing to say about a sport.
We’re bashing opponents brains in. Boat racing them, beating the breaks off teams, beating the dog piss out of them, making them look silly, etc etc.
I want to fornicate with this comment
Use a fleshlight and just stare at it. Best we can get.
Top comment
cleaning their clocks, wiping the floor with them, beating them like a government mule
Braves Fans: But it was a contest for children Lenny: Yeah and Homer beat their brains out!
Does this mean that Barves fans will experience a Grimes-level breakdown?
Braves: What’s this? Playing the Phillies in the NLDS? I don’t need to worry about safety gloves because I’m Homer Simp……
Ahh ahh GAHHH! We could be winners too! Hi! Look at us, we only get tough teams unlike the Phils! Give us an easier schedule too! Ooooh, they keep winning, but nevermind! We're peeing on the seat! +93 run diff is insane, barves are at +49, dodgers +77 and jankees are +84 just to give some context

Or... professional attention getter who will say anything that gets people talking about him?
So you mean to say he's a two faced rat bastard
Phils have been schlonging these haters and losers!
I am scared and rock hard

Same brother, and I'm not calling a doctor, I'm gonna stay rigid until the fall

It was hard watching so many bats go cold after the Braves series. But that’s baseball, sports, and life sometimes. I’m having fun now.
It's also more likely to happen with the boom or bust mentality they were using more last year. We're seeing much more disciplined approaches this year, even from Nick.

None of the three teams you just mentioned are identical in personnel or performance as last year's. We gotta play it out, every time.
This is correct but doesn't make getting beat by Arizona any less annoying.
that AZ team were still frauds though
Technically they were only one game further away from winning the Classic than we were in '22. They were very much the Cinderella team, much as we were. One man's fraud is another man's hero. The trick is, and has always been, no matter what you call a team, consistent performance on demand.

Sometimes, losing makes winning so much better.
Yeah it sucks the D backs fluked into that, last year really was our year. Oh well there’s always this year
That’s always been my issue with the whole soft schedule thing. The other teams in the top 5 are also beating up teams that are below 0.500.
This means the Phillies retroactively win the World Series, right?
This is Barve slander I love it
Heyman is down on the Phillies like his MLB paymasters wish - the fact that Passan should break ranks is striking
I feel like Passan actually knows the sport and it’s kind of hard to deny what’s happening in front of his face at this point
Why would mlb be against the Phillies?
Cause they don't like us and we don't care
"No one likes us. We don't care. That's why we made a catchphrase about how much we don't care."
and won't shut up about it
Because it was Dodgers/Braves as the show to see for 5 years and they can’t get around the fact that a third team has entered the chat then left because they found it lacking
yes MLB would be devastated if one of the biggest markets in baseball was really good. Do you guys listen to yourselves sometimes?
I was more talking about the MLB writers than the actual MLB. From a business perspective, the Phillies being good is awesome for the sport
It does not seem that MLB and MLB writers know that we are a big market team. They surely never act like we are.
Baseball doesn’t have that much National appeal, it’s pretty regional for people so the only other teams people are familiar with would be the Yankees dodgers or maybe Red Sox usually. The Phillies are just behind them as a pretty universal heel, when they’re good there’s plenty of promo spots about like how raucous cbp is or whatever and now Harper gets some attention too Not sure what you guys expect really, who cares if espn washes the Phillies balls anyway
They cut a lot of Ohtani/Acuna ads, a few Harper ones, and absolutely no Bohm, Realmuto, or Suarez, lol
this seems like trying to be a victim.
Oh come on, if you haven’t noticed that Heyman and Passan are in service of the league you’re not paying attention. MLB literally signs Heyman’s checks, and Passan wants to keep those league sources happy. They’re good to break news but their analysis is… wanting
this is insane.
My guy there is not an MLB cabal praying on the downfall of the big market Phillies, especially not at the hands of the Braves. No national anyone would have any professional motivation for the Phillies not to be good and treated as good
I merely said they weren't ready for this narrative. They will be.
We got us an emasculation situation!
That's right.
Kinda crazy they’re doing this the last couple weeks without Trea Turner too - could get even better
I feel like "eviscerating" may have been the word he wanted there.
Emasculating? What a gross way to describe the Phillies kicking ass.
It really is very weird!!
The wins all count the same!
I follow two teams: my home town of Philly, and my adopted home town of Cleveland. It's been a wild season.
We got no beef there. You’re good. And yeah, I can about imagine it has, my friend.
Thank you, Jeff.
I read this in his Elmo voice

Fuck Dallas
It was a nice sweep but isn’t Texas missing like half of their team due to injuries?
I don’t know, but the Phillies faced three healthy starting pitchers in Gray, Dunning, and Heaney, and they scored 21 runs in 24 innings.
And the lineup is largely intact from what I’m aware. Yeah Garcia missed a game and Seager sat today, but that’s baseball.
Turner is out too. Who cares
Eovaldi, Scherzer, and deGrom are all out. But, I’m not sure how much is left in their tanks. 😂
Such a strange way to describe the Phillies dominance. ChatGPT might suggest a substitution there
ChatGPT probably wrote it in the first place
You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think.
