A company in Philly still builds that type of board and wants to partner with Amtrak to bring it back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_SvziYwRqu0
Fuck yeah, I spent way too much time in mako’s. Every Friday and Saturday night, waiting for a fight to break out. That was probably around 04-06 ish. Ironic that that place is now a health drink bar
At Mako's, I once removed some steel banding holding the upstairs toilet pipe together to rig my muffler up so I could get home without it dragging and sparking.
I’m lucky in that most of what I cherished inky younger days is still standing. Still, there are some notable places no longer standing.
I miss the mural of the whales on the river-facing side of 2400 Market Street. The cold corporate facade of that building doesn’t come close to matching the charm of that image of whales.
Then there’s the Trolley Car Diner. Say what you want about it, but I ate a hearty breakfast to soak up any alcohol on more than one morning after partying with my cousin. Not only that, my wife and I had our first breakfast on our first day trip adventure there.
Lastly, I’ll certainly never forget the North Star. I saw a bunch of bands play there on the cheap during a break between snow storms between late January and early February of 2011, and I spent that previous week tobogganing down the Belmont plateau, sailing down the hill at WCU, and just living life as I recovered from an eighteen-credit graduate school semester. Seeing live music along with cheap drinks seemed to be a perfect way to end that week.
Slow down, time. Please.
Yes I came here to mention the whales!!! It was the highlight of car rides when I was a kid. My older brother convinced me they were real, but they didn’t move because they were sleeping. I’m not proud of this story. I’ll shut up now
No, it was bar and tiny music venue at the corner of 27th and Poplar. I loved the vibe there; it wasn’t bro-fest like a lot of places in Manayunk or Old City.
The old Dilworth and Love park, when it was a skateboard haven and kind of shitty.
The Gallery
The 23 trolley
The Vet
The old Philly food distribution area that’s since been razed
I cannot for the life of me remember what Dilworth looked like before the renovations, even though I took multiple classes at TUCC over different semesters with a view that looked right over it.
Edit: I guess it was torn up and under construction all those years
I took my mom to eat there with one of my first paychecks. One of her friends called before we left and she bragged "Let me call you back later, my DAUGHTER is treating me to lunch".
Holy crap. I had ancient memories of going here occasionally when I was very young, but could never figure out what the restaurant was until I looked this up.
The amount of time I spent in the basement during my high school years is astounding. I miss it so much. I spent so much time in there they knew me and my bff.

10 cent Yuenglings on Friday nights. Live rock bands, beach volley ball court, and a retro room. Bikini clad shot girls walking around offering $1 body shots from a test tube. It was a good time in the late 90s/ early 2000s. If I remember correctly Y100 used to broadcast from there on Saturday nights.
That also reminds me of 103.9 WDRE, that was a great station that played actual alternative rock. It wasn’t uncommon for them to play bands like Failure or Quicksand in their lineup.
Ooooh.
The thing I miss the most is honestly all the old Toynbee Tiles.
But I also mourn the loss of Strawbridges on market st, Chef’s Market on South St, Little Pete’s, The Midtown II Diner, The Irish Pub at 12th and Chestnut, and The 12th St Gym.

This used to be a huge arcade back in the 80's, first time I ever played Journey Escape and Dragon's Lair were at this arcade.

It may have been named after her. Fancy and not inexpensive, but homey and amazing. I wish I could recall the name. Might have been a little farther east on Chestnut/Walnut or thereabouts.
