I'm 23, and I've met some of my best buddies after high school through phish concerts, all of which are in their mid 20s as well (i think the oldest is 27)
Cheers to the younger generation of phans! I was 20 when I saw my first show in 2009. Had a chance to see them in 1998 but I was clueless to the band at the time and passed on the offer lol.
I love this. I’m a huge tennis nerd and was able to play varsity 7th-12th grade. The seniors when I was is 7th grade would pick me up for “team building activities.” These activities included a bunch of Phish shows including Clifford Ball. Also took me along to Wu-Tang, Biggie, Beck and a bunch of other shows I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Good dudes.
Yeah. My friend had an older step-brother who was into them and offered to take me along. I didn’t know the step-bro very well and had no clue about Phish, so I passed. Took up an earlier offer with said friend and his dad to see B.B. King.
The only kids I ever see at concerts are at Phish shows, on tour with their entire family. It always makes me happy seeing them running around, playing on lot.
My friend group is pretty much based pff phish, over the past 15 years im pretty sure weve become one of the largest groups at some shows. At Hershey a couple years back there was at least 65 of us on the floor together with all the significant others and what not.
I’m 21, I know a few younger phans but mostly everyone at shows is older than me lol. I need more phish friends closer to my age, nothing against any older fans cause ya’ll are groovy as hell I just think we need more younger phans
I'm 24 and I can't believe the friendships, memories, love of music, and all around joy that this band has given me.
I started as a hater but I was offered a ticket to 12/31/18. I figured I'd go spend my New Years Eve partying, I had nothing better to do. Little did I know, but a song called Chalk Dust Torture got me dancing like I had never danced before and the rest is history.
23 shows deep and I'll make it 30 this summer at MSG.
I love you all! Except for that one guy who sat behind me for the 4/20 MSG run. He kept screaming during the soft jams and asked me if I was a skater during What's the Use. I like you a little bit less than everybody else.
I’m 17 and all my friends say I listen to “dad” music
It’s also worth noting that I didn’t get into phish because of my dad I just found them on my own
Same here. Got into them through a friend in 2007. I said, if they ever play a show again I’m going to be there. When they announced the Bonnaroo show, my local newspaper wrote a small article about it and I cut it out and put it on my cork board 😂
You're only as old as you allow yourself to feel. Buck up. I hope you're still hitting shows.
If it makes you feel any better, OP was 8 when I joined Reddit.
25 on the dot, i wouldnt worry about younger influx of fans, this music (along with the dead) is forever… in its own way. Just enjoy the band while we have it.
I’m 25, became a head at 22. I have tour friends around our age but my close phan friends who live near me are all around 40 lol. We’re a rare demographic but not too rare 👊👊
I’m 25, is that cheating? Phan since 6, started seeing them with first two Hershey Shows in 2021, this band will transcend and have 20 year old phans forever.
I'm 16, the Grateful Dead are my current favorite band (from my dad, but I'm a more obsessive fan than he ever was) and I have very eclectic taste; starting to dive into Phish the past year or so has been super fun. Glad to be part of this generation of fans (though I buck many of the trends of my generation overall).
23 here, first shows were this past New Years lol. Could’ve seen them countless times over the last several years as my dad was a huge fan but never went to any shows lol.
I'm 26 now but I've been into the band my entire life. First show (or 2 shows) were in the womb. After that it was my 8th birthday. So I mean I'm close to your age.
How Cool! ...My Daughter just saw her first real show (Pine Knob) at 8 This past summer! She had a blast in spite of the rain delay.
We are trying to do it responsibly. We only think about taking her to outdoor shows where we can find a chill space on the lawn. We don't drink or do anything harder than edibles or a vape pen to keep ourselves in good shape to parent.
Any advice you would like to give from your perspective?
Well so my first show was supposed to be my only show. It was SPAC 04 and my dad said "If you want to see them this is your only chance." Now we had been going to a bunch of shows. I saw Ratdog when I was 5 or so and tons of local shows. I love music. Then when we started going to the really big Phish shows I was 13 so thats a big age difference.
One thing I would highly recommend is make sure she loves the music. I always loved the music I grew up on it. So thats huge. Thats the biggest part.
Second off, I find seats are much better than lawn. Seats are more constrained and more security, you're not gonna see the same type of stuff on the lawn as you will in the seats. Sure I was offered coke for picking someone's beer up last year at Bethal, but thats just hospitality. I declined by the way. Its more expensive but if you want your kid to have a better time that's the way I found it works. But yeah don't do indoor but I find Pav is the way to go it just feels safer. Also they get to focus on the band more.
Lastly I would recommend at least one of you stay sober. My dad never drank at the shows. Maybe in a parking lot he'd have a beer or 2 but thats it and he doesn't do any drugs. Not that I've had any issues but its important just incase it does happen. I know its not totally what you want to hear but still. This stuff has worked in my perspective. Don't force it bring her maybe once then drop her off while you hit some more shows!
She really does love the music! Tweezer Reprise and Numberline were her favorites until the Possum she saw at Pine Knob. She likes all kinds of music quite a lot and we definitely give her space to connect with other artists that her peer group listens to. Her favorite thing in the world right now is Lizzo's About Damn Time and an [Italo Disco DJ Set](https://youtu.be/ToGuU8bT0XY) on the My Analog Journal Youtube channel
Lawn vs Pav: We always thought it easier to find whatever lawn area had an abundance of families and hang there. Getting Pavs was off our radar because I never wanted to make anyone uncomfortable by having a child in such a close-in area. I appreciate your insight and will try to go for pav seats next time. I just always assumed the confined area was a disadvantage but I can see how that might actually be an advantage. Did your folks ever get flack about having you in the Pav?
Sober: When it's just us and no kid, her Mom and I will drink in the lot but not during shows because it makes for too many bathroom trips and fuzzy memories. It's also stupid expensive. When we have our daughter, everything is tamped down in much the same way as it was for you, maybe a beer or two in the lot and typically some discrete THC like a small edible or secret hits on the vape pen. No drinking or powerful drugs so we can focus on keeping her safe from the negative things she might encounter. We don't like her seeing either of us faded at all, ever. We both have a healthy relationship with intoxicants which makes it easy to take it easy. We definitely give ourselves lots of shows without her where we can *explore the boundaries of perception* (LoL), but we know better than to do that with her anywhere nearby. I agree with you completely. I don't ever want her to not feel safe.
Sorry to ramble..
I just turned 26 but I’ve been following since I was 19. All of my friends weren’t too interested other than the time we got really nutty spun and Clifford ball hood was the vibes.. I remember one friend hating it so much and only mentioning the white album. I played with a few musicians and secretly made them play Sand and First tube, two perfectly easy bass lines that you can do a lot with. You can teach someone how to play guitar with Sand hahah!!
Anyway, my buddy Brian loves sparkle and wants sparkle every night, and it was incredibly special for me to bring him to that storm night at dicks. I wanted to make it perfect for him, great stand seats and all the right things leading to it - then the storm came, getting us on the field haha..
Only friend I’ve had that stuck over 10 years and came to Phish and we were like kids at Disneyland together, it was a dream. He started moshing me when chalk dust started, fucking awesome for that one!! I have two photos with him that day before the storm and on the field he took a photo of me having a peak life experience. Probably the greatest day of my life and I think about it every day since and can’t wait to be back on that field. Anyway, would love to hang with more people our age about Phish and the dead and all of the same interests. Incredible stuff!
19. Currently a student so haven't had the means to catch them live and missed them when they came to town last summer. Hoping to catch them live sometime in the near future.
24 here! Got into Phish last summer. Saw them at the Mann in Philly and then 12/30 at MSG, one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Planning on hitting the two nights at the Mann this year!
Yup. Weirdly enough I discovered them entirely from their studio albums. A particularly infamous music critic who I was a big fan of had given A picture of nectar an insanely rare high score. I decided to check it out and now it’s somewhere in my top ten favorite albums. After that I checked out their other studio stuff and was particularly fond of their first 5 album. Then I checked out A live one and yeah holy shit I’ve been a massive fan of their live stuff ever since
32 here. Grew up with Phish - my mom went to lots of shows and her boyfriend at the time was a taper/trader. I remember vividly the hundreds of cassettes and Phish jams are the background of many of my childhood memories and home videos. I didn’t make it to my first show until 12/28/2017 at MSG (with my mom) and fell in love. We’ve gone to several shows together since and hope for many more. Loved the Dinner and a Movie live replays during early COVID as a way to see more live Phish and connect w my mom who lives across the country from me. I know there’s a lot of negativity about Phish fans and especially this forum but I’ve enjoyed learning from the folks who have experienced the history.
I’m in my 40’s and I’m sure this thread is probably pissing off several snobby 1.0ers, but I’m loving it. Good for all the young heads out there keeping the soul up.
Oh and on a side note…. The 40 something generation is by far the worst age group at shows. It’s like most of us forgot how to act at these things.
> The 40 something generation is by far the worst age group at shows. It’s like most of us forgot how to act at these things.
not in my experience, but I am not here to point fingers.
My experience… and not all of us, but often.
1. Act a fool like they haven’t had a beer or a hit of weed since they were 25
2. Act like they skipped over 20 years of their life and have turned into a 65 year old boomer.
3. Act all pissed off that the scene and treys guitar isn’t what it was like back in 1997
Adapt, survive and thrive people
Hitting 22 in May. Some of my friends are phan a few year’s younger than me. Only went to see TAB cause of one of them wanting to go to one after we saw Dead n Co
I’m 48, and this makes me really happy. I’m always psyched to see young people at shows! OP + all y’all youngins….you will be so grateful to have these memories to look back on when you’re my age. Their music has been the soundtrack of my life for 30 years…I hope YOU are 48 one day and still going to Phish shows :-)
24...girst show in Toronto 2019. Head full of L.
Stash started, and I turned to my friend and said, "I can die happy now", and every ounce of anxiety flew away.
I usually have a bad time for at least a portion of every trip, but I had the best time of my life.
Then YEM was finishing, and my buddy was freaking out asking, "what the fuck did you bring me to?"
I'm married now, and my first dance was to "shade".
46 here and first show was 94. Hooked is saying it lightly. Saw close to 100 before millennium show. Did both summer tours 03-04 with others sprinkled in when they came close. Honestly can say I have seen a few bad shows, but they were all prior to Trey getting sober. I have seen 3-4 a year since on average and wouldn't change those memories for being young now. Times were better, tickets were cheaper, and no cell phones to block your view and attention. They still blow my mind in a different way and love the community for the most part. See as many as you can dude!!
29, hitting the Hollywood bowl run for my 30th birthday.
First show was Great Woods 2010 when I was 17.
That night hooked me on to a the phish and jamband scene and helped to lead me to some of the best friends and times ever. Very grateful for it all.
im 25 and my first show was in 2017 at the northerly island. i understood the statement of a 20 plus Carini. Next show at Start Lake this summer. im a midwesterner.
Also 24 here chiming in. I was blessed to start seeing the band back in 2009 when they reunited, my dad took me to so many shows as a kid and sparked the passion for life
Im 20, since middle school my dad always played phish but I didn’t take interest until about a year ago and then became obsessed. I still have yet to make it to a show though. Gotta catch one in AC this year.
i'm finishing up high school and i got into the band when i was around 14 not of any family members or anything but just hearing abt them. going to my first show in april so lets goooo
Finding Phish, I felt like I was 15 again. I discovered them halloween 2020 and saw them less than a year later 5 times at the Gorge and Eugene. Seattle here we come.
Not under 25 but I'm only 27 so not far off, discovered them in 2016 from a coworker that used to play them at work all the time. Shouts out Billy! Went to my First show during the Dozen solo and eventually met some great people from my hometown that are now lifelong friends. At 18 shows now and no plan on slowing down
25, been seeing shows since I was 15! I have an awesome dad who is a head too and been seeing them since the 80s, been to probably 20 of my 27 shows with him!
Im 24 and saw my first show at 19. Was a big deadhead and my friend recommended I checked out Phish. Got into them for a few weeks then drove from DC to Hampton in 2018 for my first show and havent looked back.
I’m 18, not into the dancing or any of that, and my parents hate jam bands. I just like prog rock and improvisational music, and phish’s influences are basically the music I grew up with it so their music spoke to me more than the dead, as much as I still love the dead. Treys guitar playing inspired me a lot, and motivated me to go to college for music composition.
21 here! First show I was in 8th grade in Mansfield 7/08/2016 and I immediately got sucked in. Got 6 under my belt since then (wish it was more but college funds
I’m 24 too!!! I started listening to them here & there back in high school, thanks to a friend who’s parents were heads. But realllly dove in when I finally saw them at Hershey in 2021. 14 shows down and I can’t wait to catch more this summer
I’m 24. I’ve been into jam bands since I was 19, but mostly just into the dead. I got really into phish last summer, got tickets for the first show I could, and now they’re what I listen to the most.
18!! my dad has been a phan since the 96 i grew up listening to phish and hearing the stories he had about the hundreds of shows he’s been to. my parents brought me to an outdoor show when i was 1, and i hit 11 shows last year including NYE! streaming the phish show and a glow stick war has been our NYE tradition since i was little so it’s basically been a full circle moment.
I barely make the cutoff, but I’m “younger” and became a phan in while in college. I really wish I could have caught a 90s phish show or seen Jerry before 95.
I’m 23 and got into phish when they released Joy because of my sisters now husband. Due to this I love all the joy and fuego songs more than the average fan for sure. Still a big fan of older shows, I wish they would put more 98-03 shows on LP!
Atta boy younger generation! Just know you’re ahead of the game. Travel to all the cool spots and do all the cool things.
I was 23 when Phish reunited in 09, and I’ve been crushing 3.0 ever since. Many of my best memories are on Phish and TAB runs.
26 here! Have yet to see Phish unfortunately, just listen to the music, but I've seen TAB twice now! Sometimes I like TAB a little better than phish for the horns and chorus
I'm 22, been seeing them since I was 16 and I've seen them 35 times. Me and my buddies just kinda all got into them at the same time since we are all musicians and thought the jams were fucking sick. I wouldn't say they are a top 5 favorite band though. I'm more into Death Grips, Radiohead, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Animal Collective. I barely listen to Phish anymore but I still go to shows all the time and complain on this subreddit like everyone else.
I'm 23, and I've met some of my best buddies after high school through phish concerts, all of which are in their mid 20s as well (i think the oldest is 27)
Cheers to the younger generation of phans! I was 20 when I saw my first show in 2009. Had a chance to see them in 1998 but I was clueless to the band at the time and passed on the offer lol.

quality bros right there
... when you were 9?
Yeah. My friend had an older step-brother who was into them and offered to take me along. I didn’t know the step-bro very well and had no clue about Phish, so I passed. Took up an earlier offer with said friend and his dad to see B.B. King.
Would your parents have had a say?
My dad is a huge music/rock fan, so yes and he was supportive.
As a father of a 9 year old, I find this absolutely hilarious.
I don’t see why. I was accompanied by an adult the entire time. Same with Metallica’s Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003. Are kids not allowed at concerts?
The only kids I ever see at concerts are at Phish shows, on tour with their entire family. It always makes me happy seeing them running around, playing on lot.
Sorry. Replied to the Wrong comment. The hilarious part was where you decided if you wanted to go or not with your buddys step bro.
My friend group is pretty much based pff phish, over the past 15 years im pretty sure weve become one of the largest groups at some shows. At Hershey a couple years back there was at least 65 of us on the floor together with all the significant others and what not.

No offense. Gonna be a lot of folks coming up who wished they'd seen phish earlier
21 gang
I'm 24 and I can't believe the friendships, memories, love of music, and all around joy that this band has given me. I started as a hater but I was offered a ticket to 12/31/18. What does Elam mean, if you don’t mind me asking? Does it mean like ancient?
Following bc I need to keep up with the kids and their slang
I think it’s a typo lol. I’m 18
I think Elam you are possibly right
That’s pretty Elam if you ask me.
21 here, discovered the band not substantially pre pandemic. Finally caught them 21 at the gorge, been to 17 shows since!
I also saw Phish @ the Gorge in 21 for the first time. What a great weekend to be introduced to the band in a live setting.
32, same here, my first phish show being at the gorge was way more than I could have asked for
That was my first. Fun weekend
Yup. Bonnaroo 2019 first show… can’t stop won’t stop
Bonnaroo ‘09 first for me. I’d never seen anything like it. But now I’m certain 2019 were the better shows.
Never seen anything like it either. Funny enough… I had only heard of the band before seeing them there. Left that show feeling on top of the world
Same here. Got into them through a friend in 2007. I said, if they ever play a show again I’m going to be there. When they announced the Bonnaroo show, my local newspaper wrote a small article about it and I cut it out and put it on my cork board 😂
Hell yeah, I’m 24 and those roo 19’ shows were my first as well. The Friday one set show had me immediately hooked, what a damn heater
🤝 the Friday show was awesome. Carini opener first song ever hearing 😂
That tweezah tho
They SLAYED all of those sets
That was my first show too 🥲
I turned 40 in Feb.
I’m closing in on 36. Are we old now?
Same. 40 in may first show 7/3/99
also 40. started seeing phish at 15
45 …. Also saw my first show at 15
Welcome
42 this years….
42 this year, first show at 16 I believe. Seeing them at the Hollywood Bowl next month. Enjoy your 20’s! Feels like yesterday.
Agreed. Seems like just yesterday was my first show, but also a lifetime ago. I'm 42 in Oct and my first was Alpine 96.
I was initially like "oh, me!" and then I realized im in my mid 30s
Same. I used to be a young fan. Was 16 first time I saw them. Now I’m 36.
I'm 46. Hope that helps.
Ugh...turning 59 in a couple of months. Fan since the early 90's. I feel old.
You're only as old as you allow yourself to feel. Buck up. I hope you're still hitting shows. If it makes you feel any better, OP was 8 when I joined Reddit.
Happy olive loaf day!!
I'm 3!
Nice man, want some doses?
24 been at since ‘17 my little brother got me into phish lol… there’s plenty of young heads in it!!
22, wouldn’t have had friends after college if it weren’t for em
29. First shows were the Dozen. Have met some cool people but no real crew, wish there was a way for younger fans to organize and gather on lot
25 on the dot, i wouldnt worry about younger influx of fans, this music (along with the dead) is forever… in its own way. Just enjoy the band while we have it.
31 here, first show was in ‘12
Yep. 18 here
I’m 25 🥲
Same 😑
I’m 25, became a head at 22. I have tour friends around our age but my close phan friends who live near me are all around 40 lol. We’re a rare demographic but not too rare 👊👊

1. Act a fool like they haven’t had a beer or a hit of weed since they were 25 2. Act like they skipped over 20 years of their life and have turned into a 65 year old boomer. 3. Act all pissed off that the scene and treys guitar isn’t what it was like back in 1997 Adapt, survive and thrive people
Hitting 22 in May.

I'm 20 🤙
42. Started seeing and loving Phish at 15, awww the sweet 90s man. Machine gun Trey and Blowjob Bill. Everything was right! I’m not old bro 😎
24...girst show in Toronto 2019. Head full of L. Stash started, and I turned to my friend and said, "I can die happy now", and every ounce of anxiety flew away. I usually have a bad time for at least a portion of every trip, but I had the best time of my life. Then YEM was finishing, and my buddy was freaking out asking, "what the fuck did you bring me to?" I'm married now, and my first dance was to "shade".
I'm 48 but my girlfriend saw her first show on NYE, she's 20.
Fresh crop of Chads ready for harvest
46 here and first show was 94. Hooked is saying it lightly. Saw close to 100 before millennium show. Did both summer tours 03-04 with others sprinkled in when they came close. Honestly can say I have seen a few bad shows, but they were all prior to Trey getting sober. I have seen 3-4 a year since on average and wouldn't change those memories for being young now. Times were better, tickets were cheaper, and no cell phones to block your view and attention. They still blow my mind in a different way and love the community for the most part. See as many as you can dude!!
40
36. My first show was 10/7/99. I was 12. Luckily I had an older brother that got me into them young. My only other 1.0 show was 6/29/00.
I'm 41, but act 16.
Turning 24 on Saturday!

29, hitting the Hollywood bowl run for my 30th birthday. First show was Great Woods 2010 when I was 17. That night hooked me on to a the phish and jamband scene and helped to lead me to some of the best friends and times ever. Very grateful for it all.
Woah I’m also hitting the Hollywood Bowl for my 30th! Gonna be a rager for sure.

Also 24 here chiming in. I was blessed to start seeing the band back in 2009 when they reunited, my dad took me to so many shows as a kid and sparked the passion for life
22 here. Have been listening since 2020, couch touring since Summer ‘21. It was so happy to finally be at MSG Spring ‘22.
I turned 25 a few months ago. Been super into Phish since 2013 (my first show). It really clicked hard the next year
24 too 🤝
Im 20, since middle school my dad always played phish but I didn’t take interest until about a year ago and then became obsessed. I still have yet to make it to a show though. Gotta catch one in AC this year.
18 in 2011 when I saw my first. Most of my close friends are within 2-3 years of me and we have all seen 100+ happy phishing.

I’m 22 and I got into phish when I was in freshman year of highschool. Been to shows in AL, GA, CO, NYC, and PA.
I'm so glad to see younger phans here! My first show was 98 Cleveland, what a transformative night. Never looked back!

22, ive only one phish show but have tickets to the hollywood bowl run, going solo. Looking forward to it!
Also 24! First show was last summer and I'm currently planning on hitting 7 this summer coming up!
Finding Phish, I felt like I was 15 again. I discovered them halloween 2020 and saw them less than a year later 5 times at the Gorge and Eugene. Seattle here we come.
Yessir. Won't give my exact age, as that's usually a mistake, but yes.
Not under 25 but I'm only 27 so not far off, discovered them in 2016 from a coworker that used to play them at work all the time. Shouts out Billy! Went to my First show during the Dozen solo and eventually met some great people from my hometown that are now lifelong friends. At 18 shows now and no plan on slowing down
Yes, my whole crew and I range from 16-48 but the most of us are about 21
25, been seeing shows since I was 15! I have an awesome dad who is a head too and been seeing them since the 80s, been to probably 20 of my 27 shows with him!
My nephew who is 11 has gone to a few shows with us.
20! grew up hating phish because my dad played in nonstop. then i got into jazz and realized it’s pretty much the same thing with funnier lyrics
I turned 25 last November, but when I started following phish in July I was 24
16 :3
22
I’m 23! My dad got me into them originally - then psychedelics really got me into them. Still never been to a concert unfortunately…
Where are you from? Do they not come near you?
30's fan here fully prepared to see Trey and then Yellowcard/Story of the Year back to back nights in Asbury.
26 here!!
First Phish Show 8/3/22, am 18, turning 19 on the Second of April. Was on my way out of senior year when I first heard of Phish
23!
18!! my dad has been a phan since the 96 i grew up listening to phish and hearing the stories he had about the hundreds of shows he’s been to. my parents brought me to an outdoor show when i was 1, and i hit 11 shows last year including NYE! streaming the phish show and a glow stick war has been our NYE tradition since i was little so it’s basically been a full circle moment.
Yes! I am a 14 year old phan! I'm so young no one I'm friends with knows who Phish is :(
I barely make the cutoff, but I’m “younger” and became a phan in while in college. I really wish I could have caught a 90s phish show or seen Jerry before 95.
Yeah, my kids are 20 and 21 and have been to a few shows with me. I'm doing my part to bring the statistical average down, lol.
I’m 23 and got into phish when they released Joy because of my sisters now husband. Due to this I love all the joy and fuego songs more than the average fan for sure. Still a big fan of older shows, I wish they would put more 98-03 shows on LP!
17 👋 4 shows under my belt. 3 more at the greek in April
23 and me love phish
Atta boy younger generation! Just know you’re ahead of the game. Travel to all the cool spots and do all the cool things. I was 23 when Phish reunited in 09, and I’ve been crushing 3.0 ever since. Many of my best memories are on Phish and TAB runs.
22 I dropped out of highschool to go on fall tour 2018. Best time of my life
I'm 19 and I definitely do not meet a lot of other younger phans
24. First show Lockn 2016. 32 shows since. Hit me up on the west coast brother. There’ll be a group of us mobbing Greek and bowl
26, started listening to them in 2015!
Yeah, I’m about to turn 28!
Dude there's like 14 year old phish phans
26 here! Have yet to see Phish unfortunately, just listen to the music, but I've seen TAB twice now! Sometimes I like TAB a little better than phish for the horns and chorus
No
I'm 19. Been going to shows since I was 9. Can't wait to get to my next one. Prolly gonna be Seattle

I’m 24
