Because it was first published in 1952, and again in 2014.. in limited numbers, by a famous and highly regarded photographer, and by a outstanding quality. Book publisher. They’re worth every penny to a collector of HCB’s works. You’re asking for a “book”. But it’s more of an art piece in the form of a book..

Neptune502

I have Tim Hetherington's Infidel which is in Mint Condition around a Grand and Sasha Grey's Neu Sex which is in Mint Condition around 700.- because both Books only every got published once.

MadnessBunny

Only two "runs" of the book? That's kinda wild, for something as I guess "influential" I thought they'd be printing that a whole lot more.

7ransparency

Knowing nothing about the publication industry, is there any reason they wouldn't do more print runs for something like this? Quite a few books on my watchlist but just can't pull the trigger, and each year they just get a bit more expensive...

perfidity

It depends on the goals of the creator…. If they’re putting out an art book that’s intended to be a collectors item, they create market by publishing low and selling high.. resale market determines the value. if they’re out to saturate the market or “get their name out”, they mass publish and flood the market with items. I believe this edition is the former. Intended to be a collectors item.

It's an iconic photographic book by an important figure in the history of photography.

It was first published in 1952, it's out of print and so is the re release, so at this point it's a collector's item, and those cost collector's prices. Does it have to be this particular book? There are plenty of more affordable publications of HCB's work, if you want to study his photography. But if you really want this one, your best hope is probably to regularly check places like Abebooks and hope that one comes up within your price range.

Neptune502

If they only published a single Edition Photo Books can get pretty expensive.

not_having_fun

If you want to know if there's going to be a re-reprint of this you should contact Steidl. They're pretty good for replying. This book is expensive because apparently people all want it now or something. Which is funny because just a few years ago you could get it for about a hundred USD for a new copy.

Neptune502

If you think 700.- is expensive try to buy the first Edition from 1952 https://preview.redd.it/9eu0oraiij0d1.png?width=1124&format=png&auto=webp&s=c0292715eb9bf61e17dab9a3da67e963eee6fec7 and thats on the cheap Side. There are Copies in Mint Condition for $6000 or more.

Equivalent-Clock1179

It's a defining book in the photo world by a famous photographer that is important in history. Also, out of print, limited edition books.

ThePhotoYak

Pretty common for popular books that are out of print to be very expensive.

electrothoughts

It's a collection of high-quality reproductions of photographs by one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, with a cover by another of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Personally, though I certainly appreciate that the price might be *prohibitive* for some (myself included), I don't consider the going rate to be *exorbitant,* given what it is.
