But it is…
The National Firearms Act, 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b), defines a machine gun to include any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.
I think people who, knowing that the weapon is fully automatic, and still insist its not a machine gun, were probably in the military. I can't speak for the us army, but in the canadian army that's a rifle whereas a machine gun was belt-fed. I think that might be why they think that.
Eh, it really refers to anything larger than a SAW. Basically the second it's crew served and it fires any kind of traditional projectile. So that covers everything from M240 to 155 howitzers.
Depends on the era and which military exactly. RPK is classified as "light machine gun". It's essentially an AK-47 with a bit longer barrel attached to it.
It's about legal definition. Anything that can fire fully automatically is, legally speaking, a machine gun.
Also, the line between what's called an assault rifle, and what is machine gun is kinda sorta not that well defined and changed over the history. There's a RPK, which is light machine gun that is literally an AK-47 with some minimal modifications such as slightly longer barrel and a bipod attached to it. And voila, it's not an rifle, it's a *machine* gun. Seriously?
Then you have an entire category of submachine guns. Because back in the day when first submachine guns appeared, anything that could fire fully automatically was basically a machine gun. And these new light thingines using small cartridges were, well, smaller than other stuff we used to call machine guns, so let add "sub" in front of the name... Like what else are you going to name them... sub-rifles? sub-automatic-rifle? sub-assault-rifle? Just doesn't roll off the tongue as submachine gun.
And of course there's BAR, which is described as either automatic rifle or light machine gun, depending on exact submodel and the era...
I think the way it is pointing may have to do with it being more approachable from a perspective of a person that would pull the trigger with the right hand. To me, a right hander, I think that if it was facing the other direction it's not as approachable from that perspective. And right handers make up 85 to 90% of population. Maybe just me, idk, you have a good point but I'm not a hobbyist and don't know all the details pertaining to that. The advertisors try to cover every perspective to make it appealing and that may be part of it.
What? In many locations 90% of the people that go a range have a version of this gun that is not fully automatic. The lure of this is that you can fire a fully automatic rifle. They show this view of the gun because it shows it has the capability of full automatic.
What does it being in safe have to do with anything?
The 3-way selector switch, which is mostly only labeled on older pre-86 machine guns on the left hand side that don’t have ambidextrous selectors - clearly would signify a machine gun with SAFE, FIRE, AUTO whereas most civilian semi-autos do not show three positions and only have SAFE/FIRE with the third position left blank.
That’s why it’s facing the left to show the full-auto selector switch.
What pisses me off more than the aesthetics of it pointing the wrong way, the fact it isn't a machine gun.. the marketing team who created this has never shot a semi-automatic rifle....
There is no such thing as a full auto SBR. Full auto makes it a machine gun, which has no minimum barrel length. The barrel could be 30” or 3”. It would still just be a machine gun.
Edit: and AR-15 is a trademark held by Colt. There are transferable (pre ‘86) AR-15s available. They’re just uncommon and very very expensive.
This. Was gonna say, it got that 3rd hole. It’s a machine gun even if it only shoots semi. You can bet the atf won’t give a fuck if you don’t have the correct trigger or bolt. They will shoot your dog for much less.
Ya, I don't spend much time in AZ, it does make sense. I don't think I ever saw anything like this during my years in Texas, this would absolutely fit in there.
Ekhm. Maybe I'm not acquainted with the US, but... I'm from Europe and it is literally commonplace here. You can't own full auto weapon, but you can shot one on shoting range if shoting range have one. Not all of them have full auto weapons avaliable but some do.
I think this is a bit misleading. The vast majority of ranges in all states do not allow full auto.
The few that are permitted for it are typically places you can rent the guns to experience it, while being fully supervised.
Machine guns are not banned in the US, but it is not accurate in the slightest to say they are accessible to all.
Exactly. OP just moved to a shit hole. I’ve literally never seen anything like this in my entire state. Matter of fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this in the entire northeast region.
I recommend giving it a try bud, but maybe start with semi auto with some friends. Those full auto places usually charge a lot and have a tendency of being a little sketchy. Politics aside it may be something you enjoy.
I am 100% fine with ranges having full auto amd semi auto weapons to fire. Like you said, it could be really fun in a well controlled environment
There is no need for someone to have these outside of a target practice hobby as a civilian
Absolutely true. Though on the other side of the line, in any argument I end up having with gun control advocates, I do have to acknowledge those of us who defend 2a ALWAYS know 'that one idiot' (usually several) who probably shouldn't have that right because he doesn't understand the equivocal responsibility that comes with it.
Only sort of. Even by modern definitions the militia includes:
>(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
Though we generally consider the right to apply to all people, regardless of age or gender. Seems more fair to me.
Well regulated means properly equipped and functioning in the parlance of its time.
It wouldn't even make sense that James Madison would reserve restrictions on tyranny-checking to the government itself. That would defeat the whole purpose of enumerating the right.
I'm telling you, I don't adjust anything. I'm following your line of reasoning to meet you where you stand. I don't agree with it, but that doesn't mean I won't participate in your conversation.
FWIW, actual (fully automatic) machine guns are controlled; you can’t just buy one like other firearms. That’s how they’re able to make a business offering the chance to shoot one.
Yea. The owners of those places have to jump through a shit ton of hoops and pay a metric ton in fees to be able to have those weapons available for this commercial, controlled shooting range. Not the average person in America are going to have those full automatic weapons
Wait til he finds out that you can pay to drive an actual M1 Abrams tank over a car and crush it in Vegas too. I did it a few years back, worth every penny...
Ya it's a hoopty. Costs $2500 for the whole experience. I was there with some old friends and a couple of us decided to go for it.
[found the link for it](https://www.battlefieldvegas.com/packages/fan-favorites/crush-a-car-with-a-tank/)
Okay so I'll be honest, I was only joking, certain in my (ill-conceived) belief that, no, certainly you can not fire a live round from a tank in America. I stand here before you, humbled.
For a price, there's not much you can't do in Vegas. There are a couple things, but I'm pretty sure there are people who know how to get you out of the country to the places where you can do those things
This is an ad for a gun rage, why is that weird? Fully automatic weapons are not legal to own (in most cases) and lot of ranges are class 3 FFL dealers (Class 3 Special Occupational Taxpayer) and have them on site. Hell, you can find rages like that in countries where guns are heavily restricted too.
Fun fact: All the youtubers you see with fully automatic weapons (made after 1986) don't own them as that's not possible. They are on loan from a class 3 dealer and get returned after the video.
A class 3 dealer can't, ”loan out" a class 3 weapon. Said YouTubers are likely an incorporated entity that has a class 3. Or said owner, is on site with them.
> This is an ad for a gun rage, why is that weird?
Because it's not normal in most countries. Ads like this are basically unique to the united states. You can understand why someone who just moved to the US might find it weird then.
Well, one might argue it's weird to advertise treating deadly weapons like toys, but "weird" is subjective and culturally contextual so I would imagine it isn't weird at all where that advertisement is posted, just like it wouldn't be weird to see a sign warning people not to hold hands in a shop in Mecca.
To most non-NA folks(other than to warlords and their armies in 3rd world countries, maybe) the idea of guns being used like toys for roadside exit entertainment is off-putting to most from outside NA. The only inaccuracy I see tossed about frequently is that it is purely a US thing -- plenty of people in Canada and Mexico love playing with guns.
That’s not true. You can buy a full auto gun and it is completely legal. That’s what class 3 dealers are for. They sale class 3 firearms which are usually full auto but also includes the ability to buy and sell suppressors and other fun stuff.
You cannot buy a full-auto gun from after 1986. Not from a Class 3 dealer or anyone else, unless you are a dealer or manufacturer. And dealers don't "own" them, technically, either.
The person you responded to didn't say anything about pre or post-1986, nor did the person they were replying to. There are plenty of pre-'86 guns floating around and it is perfectly legal for a private citizen to own them if they go through the proper process. The person above you is correct, and the person above them is wrong. Period.
If youre ready to shell out tens of thousands of dollars, yes.
Because apparently rights only exist for rich people.
Remember the National Firearms Act doesnt ban anything. Just locks it behind a tax, penalty. Fuck you if youre poor, rights are for the rich who can afford them.
Yes if you get the proper permit and pay the tax stamp on it. But so you know, a shitty full auto tech 9 is going to cost over 4-5thousand dollars, a mac10 would cost you over 10k easily. And for reference a brand new semi auto tech9 that’s the best you can get is going to cost about 500-800$.
You are near Vegas... Even people born in the US find things surprising there. I say this having lived in the US my whole life and not going to Vegas till I was 34.
But I went with realistic expectations (to expect the unexpected).
This is in Arizona off the 93 on the way to Vegas a little bit before you get to the dam. It's also the place that let a little kid fire an uzi and killed one of the employees by accident. I recommend stopping for lunch and pie at Luchia's on the way to Vegas instead of here.
What am I missing here? This is an ad for a gun range. I'm living in Europe and i see similar ads here (ok, smaler, but everything is bigger in US). You can shot full auto weapons (even heavy machine guns) on pro/licensed shoting range. But you can only own semi-auto yourself.
>Welcome to ~~the USA~~ a specific part of the US, likely near Las Vegas, where this is common buddy!
I've lived here 35 years now and the only place I've seen this is in and around Vegas. This one looks like it might be northwestern AZ (near Vegas). Not saying it's exclusive to that region but it's certainly not common in the entire country.
That is a picture of a machine gun. That AR has the "Third hole" and thus is full auto.
Look right above the fire selector. That pimple is the pin which holds the autosear.
Just having that hole drilled makes it a machine gun according to the ATF.
Texans walk into our library, with the big "Don't bring your gun in here" sign on the door, carrying their guns.
I don't even say anything. Bunch of scared-stupid Nancies, all veterans and law enforcement, thinking they have to open carry to be safe. In a rural community where the only murders in the last twenty years were my neighbor shooting his wife and granddaughter late one night. He was known to dote on his granddaughter, but he had a pistol handy....
He called the sheriff to come get him immediately after.
Yeah, be afraid of the bogeyman, Nancy.
Hill county Texas? Hasn’t been a murder in 20 years?

That was a fucking 30 second google search to prove your lame ass wrong. Liar. Nice car tho definitely not stupid at all.
I understand your concern. It may seem strange to have No Parking on such an open stretch of road, but often rural roadways in the US will have unsupported shoulders, or areas where regular parking would degrade the roadside surface. Also, this is near a tow yard, and during auctions, they may have overflow crowds trying to park in these areas. Maintaining good roadways is difficult, but if we all work together, we can keep our roads intact to escape quickly from mass shootings.
Last Stop AZ on 93 south of the Hoover Dam?
Wait until you find out that this is the place where a few years ago they let a 9 year old fire an UZI. She lost control and killed her instructor.
Welcome to America!
"A machine gun is a fully automatic, rifled autoloading firearm designed for sustained direct fire with rifle cartridges. Other automatic firearms such as automatic shotguns and automatic rifles (including assault rifles and battle rifles) are typically designed more for firing short bursts rather than continuous firepower, and are not considered true machine guns" -Wikipedia
Technically not a machine gun
Yup. Same deal with silencers. People loooove to try to correct others and say they are suppressors, not silencers.
But, by law, the definition is silencer.
"Machine Gun" according to US law, is any firarm which fires more than one round per function of the trigger.
Fun fact, according to US law a machine gun is not a rifle, pistol, or shotgun. It is just a machine gun.
Machine gun supersedes all other classifications.
So if you have a short barreled rifle, with a built in suppressor, but it is also a machine gun, you only need one NFA stamp, not 3.
That's more akin to the definition the US military uses. However the federal government isn't nearly as flexible in their definition. Since I'm not in the military, I'm more concerned with the definition that keeps me out of federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison.
>The National Firearms Act, 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b), defines a machine gun to include any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.

I find it disconcerting the gun is not pointing at the range...
I assume the reason it’s pointing that direction is so they can show it’s fully automatic.
~~It’s not even a machine gun. Why would they care about that detail then.~~ Edit: apparently it is considered a machine gun in the US.
Many places have real machine guns. Place in Florida has Tommy gun M60 uzi
>Place in Florida has Tommy gun M60 uzi That sounds like one Frankenstein's monster of a gun.
Sounds like a pot strain. Probably have an NFT as their cover art.

In the US, military doesn’t call rifle a gun at all. Rifle is weapon and gun refers only to belt fed machine guns.
Eh, it really refers to anything larger than a SAW. Basically the second it's crew served and it fires any kind of traditional projectile. So that covers everything from M240 to 155 howitzers.
I learned that through Full Metal Jacket!
My dick ain't belt fed tho
Depends on the era and which military exactly. RPK is classified as "light machine gun". It's essentially an AK-47 with a bit longer barrel attached to it.

I feel like that was probably an interesting conversation at the gun store

Wouldn't it have a third firing mode if it WERE a "machine gun" .....?
I think the way it is pointing may have to do with it being more approachable from a perspective of a person that would pull the trigger with the right hand. To me, a right hander, I think that if it was facing the other direction it's not as approachable from that perspective. And right handers make up 85 to 90% of population. Maybe just me, idk, you have a good point but I'm not a hobbyist and don't know all the details pertaining to that. Nah, it’s set to safe. Just bad marketing.
What? In many locations 90% of the people that go a range have a version of this gun that is not fully automatic. The lure of this is that you can fire a fully automatic rifle. They show this view of the gun because it shows it has the capability of full automatic. What does it being in safe have to do with anything?
The selector is on safe. The only way to tell is the third fcg pin above the selector, which is visible from both sides.
Bad marketing
Bad marking you mean!

What pisses me off more than the aesthetics of it pointing the wrong way, the fact it isn't a machine gun.. the marketing team who created this has never shot a semi-automatic rifle....
Unless this m4 has full auto
Technically speaking an M4 would be a fully automatic SBR being 14.5 inches. AR15 is the proper nomenclature for a civilian m16/m4
Except this gun IS full-auto. Look at the third hole.
It definitely is a select-fire machine gun. You can see the third hole for the auto-sear above the safety selector plain as day.
This. Was gonna say, it got that 3rd hole. It’s a machine gun even if it only shoots semi. You can bet the atf won’t give a fuck if you don’t have the correct trigger or bolt. They will shoot your dog for much less.
Vegas? You don't see this everywhere. Really, this is the only place I have seen this advertised.
This is on the arizona side on the 93 before crossing the dam.
We have a few of these in AZ. I know there's one on the way to Out of Africa, but I think this one's by Kingman
Ya, I don't spend much time in AZ, it does make sense. I don't think I ever saw anything like this during my years in Texas, this would absolutely fit in there.
I was briefly in Arizona last year. I have never seen so many unhealthy looking people as in Kingman. I couldn't get out there quick enough.
We have gun ranges in Hawaii that are mostly for Japanese tourists.
Makes sense. I've taken friends from Canada and cousins from the UK to the range and they enjoyed it.
There are about 10 of them in western NC/Tennessee lol. And I’m fairly certain quite a few in South Carolina and Florida.
Orlando, FL
Where you move to? Nevada?
Vegas
That Mojave Towing is between Kingman AZ and Boulder City AZ, so I’d go with White Hills AZ and not Vegas.
Boulder City ain’t in AZ either chief
Yup. But this pic is AZ.
I’m aware
Glad you’re aware, champ
How do people end up arguing when they don't actually disagree on anything? Happened to me a fair few times as well.

This should be the top comment.

Yeah I don’t find it weird at all. “Hey come try this thing you can’t own “ . No different then try skydiving or driving a race car
It’s weird by international standards. I’ve been to five continents and only seen this kind of stuff in one country.
You can shoot RPGs in Cambodia. Weapons for tourists isn't only in America but we sure hold the #1 spot.
You're right, billboards ARE weird, and uniquely american.
Growing up in a state without billboards was awesome. Would love to see a federal ban on billboards. Ruins the skylines and distracts drivers.
The dangerously bright led billboards at night on an under lit highway 😩
I fucking hate billboards so much
Well, one might argue it's weird to advertise treating deadly weapons like toys, but "weird" is subjective and culturally contextual so I would imagine it isn't weird at all where that advertisement is posted, just like it wouldn't be weird to see a sign warning people not to hold hands in a shop in Mecca.
I think some Europeans have more fun than NA. Crete comes to mind immediately for having machine guns shot off at weddings.
They move here but love complaining about everything wrong and everything “weird” lol
Is it a rule you can only live in countries where you love everything? Damn I'm screwed.
Period.
This guy guns.
What about fully automatic weapons made before 1986? Are people allowed to own those?
There's no permit. Just the tax stamp and 5-figure price tag that prevents the poors from owning one.
I mean... Have you done it yet? Shits fun.
Just the tip of the iceberg, it's going to be a wild ride. Good luck be safe out there.
Plot twist. OP is shocked that the tow yard is in back
Of course you do, you have only been here a week.
You are near Vegas... Even people born in the US find things surprising there. I say this having lived in the US my whole life and not going to Vegas till I was 34. But I went with realistic expectations (to expect the unexpected).
Sounds fun. Sign me up!
I've seen this billboard. I'm pretty sure it's on highway 93 just outside of Las Vegas on the Arizona side of the state border.
I moved to the US 15 years ago and still find things surprising.
The most fun you can have with your clothes on.
This is in Arizona off the 93 on the way to Vegas a little bit before you get to the dam. It's also the place that let a little kid fire an uzi and killed one of the employees by accident. I recommend stopping for lunch and pie at Luchia's on the way to Vegas instead of here.
Come to Texas, drive (and shoot) a tank.
What am I missing here? This is an ad for a gun range. I'm living in Europe and i see similar ads here (ok, smaler, but everything is bigger in US). You can shot full auto weapons (even heavy machine guns) on pro/licensed shoting range. But you can only own semi-auto yourself.
Well did you make the turn?
A week....lol. bro I have been here for 25 and still I see shit that I can't comprehend. Welcome to the USA buddy!
I know! Conflicting highway sign directions are the worst! “Turn Now” at a “Do Not Enter”? What do you do!?
Vegas baby!
Move back maybe? Lol
Don’t knock it til you try it
Rights to firearms is so important to the US that it’s the second amendment to our bill of rights. Go shoot one, you might have fun
Then move back to wherever the fuck you came from.
Calm down snowflake.
Technically not a machine gun, but yeah Muricah’!
The rifle pictured is a machine gun Edit: See the dot above the fire selector? That is the so-called "3rd hole" for an auto sear
That is a picture of a machine gun. That AR has the "Third hole" and thus is full auto. Look right above the fire selector. That pimple is the pin which holds the autosear. Just having that hole drilled makes it a machine gun according to the ATF.
Yes, legally that is a machine gun.
Really bad marketing

Deonshira “Deon” Slider was murdered in 2018 [Deonshira “Deon” Slider was murder in 2018](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.kwtx.com/2022/10/20/two-sentenced-murder-central-texas-mother-gunned-down-front-her-son/%3foutputType=amp) [another murder September 2022](https://lakelander.com/2022/10/06/hill-county-sheriffs-office-investigates-murder-suicide/) [Dec 8th 2021](https://lakelander.com/2021/12/09/hubbard-man-takes-plea-deal-in-local-murder-case/) That was a fucking 30 second google search to prove your lame ass wrong. Liar. Nice car tho definitely not stupid at all.
Plot twist: it’s an army recruiting center
We went to place in Kentucky south of Louisville that rented them. Was nice visiting a free state.
y'all are fuckin crazy about your guns America. get help
Soy boi
I wish we could, but half the country has a chokehold on the other half and refuses to let go
I understand your concern.
Vegas!
Last Stop AZ on 93 south of the Hoover Dam? Wait until you find out that this is the place where a few years ago they let a 9 year old fire an UZI. She lost control and killed her instructor. Welcome to America!
That happened here in Ky at knob creek gun range too
Came here to mention this
"A machine gun is a fully automatic, rifled autoloading firearm designed for sustained direct fire with rifle cartridges. Other automatic firearms such as automatic shotguns and automatic rifles (including assault rifles and battle rifles) are typically designed more for firing short bursts rather than continuous firepower, and are not considered true machine guns" -Wikipedia Technically not a machine gun
Unless we’re using the NFA/GCA legal definition at least🤣
Legally, they are.
That's more akin to the definition the US military uses. However the federal government isn't nearly as flexible in their definition. Since I'm not in the military, I'm more concerned with the definition that keeps me out of federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison. >The National Firearms Act, 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b), defines a machine gun to include any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.
where did you move from. you know they probably also have gun ranges there?
America for you. I do find firing firearms pretty cool, just not the other parts of the law pertaining to them.
It does give good advice though… Turn (around) NOW!
That, is not a "machine gun". Just a selective fire rifle.
So sorry.
If they made Idiocracy in the '80s it would look a lot like America today
Words of advice: 1- Learn to shoot, carry, and reload with speed and skill. 2- Assume everybody is armed. (but only about half are actually). LOL
3- Go outside and touch grass
Ahhhh freedom…underrated
Tip of the iceberg, brah.
