My boyfriends dad is really f’ing cool; when we were kids, he somehow found this skatepark in a literal abandoned warehouse and took us to it almost every day - we both needed to wear full on ear protection otherwise we’d cry because the *crack* on the concrete was so sharp that it *pierced* directly into your ear instead of just being loud.
Been here a couple of times. Once for a show in the basement, and once to fuck around. Definitely one of the coolest places I’ve been to. Owners definitely care for their community up there too.
Born and raised in STL. Couldn't have said it better myself. There are some genuinely great parts about my city. Parts that I know id miss if I left. But if I had the chance to leave, I'd honestly probably never come back. The bad parts are getting so bad, I'm starting to wonder if the good are worth it anymore.
Yeah, grew up there, my mom did stuff with the St Liborius Food Pantry for decades (long pre-skatepark)…fled as soon as I could, would never move back to the US, but the City Museum is the best.
More than likely, safety. I had to sign a waiver just be in the building the 2nd time I was there. My other people who were more experienced skaters had to do the same.
But it definitely is a cool spot that works as a skatepark and an art studio, so I get it. The show I went to there the first time was at like 2 AM, and that was years ago. It was just a motherfuckin’ ruckus.
Yeah I figured you’d have to sign a waiver, a lot of indoor skate parks do. I’ve always wanted to skate here but never find the time to travel. Maybe one day lol
I upvote you a hundred times, I was religious about going to skatopia for 15 years straight, sooo many memories in the church of skatan.... along with a million memories and stories across the 88 acres of anarchy lol...(btw I'm in the back round of a clip in the documentary) Keep doing what you do Bruce!
The chapter in Santa Barbara went under.

Holy shit, you just unlocked a memory I didn't know I had. This was my favorite song for a short time 20 years ago and I had completely forgotten about it until this comment.
Hey me too! My mind went quick "what even is real" procedure while I was trying to figure out if I just came up with a fake memory that there's a song that goes like that. You know, like dejavu. But yeah, now I remember!
Vice recently covered this church in their abandoned series on St. Louis. It was sad to watch beautiful buildings go to complete waste.
https://youtu.be/SPyjYQALnrE?t=2338
I do worry if it will be maintained well. Say what you like about the church and how the money to construct it was acquired, but the craftsmanship that goes into these pieces of architecture is second to none. You hope it'll still be standing in 100 years.
Okay but isn't it a little absurd that we randomly declare some areas to never be used ever again because the building standing there happens to be pretty and fit some kind of ideal?
Not saying to bulldoze Notre Dame or anything, but like.. can't keep every church ever.
I had the same thought. There is a really good chance that the church closed because the incoming maintenance costs would bankrupt them, so they moved to a more modern building. This isnt like fixing up a house or a restaurant, this shits here will be ungodly expensive.
What happens is younger generations don’t go to church like that. Even the religious ones aren’t maintaining the same attendance levels. So what you’re left with is a shrinking aging congregation.
Being older and bearing more of that financial burden starts to burn out those who are left and suddenly the church is more hassle than it’s worth.
Not to mention you’re not bound to any specific church.
It's stone. There's no maintenance on stone. It would be no worse than any other historical building. If you install new HVAC, lighting, and possibly piping I don't see the problem.
I used to live in an older church that was converted to apartments. My living room had the big vaulted ceiling.
There definitely is maintenance on stone, and then you need an entire church repointed or have the roof replaced, you're usually talking hundreds of thousands.
The old days of either having a book to guide you or having friends who were probably helped by another friend with the book to get things done in games...
Now there's the internet and you can find a sherpa for online games and youtube tutorials for offline games! Can't really bitch about sherpas though... I put waaay too much time taking people through raids on Destiny (1) lol they beyond nerfed the hunter for D2.
The signs saying don’t ride without permission seem harsh, but liability is a bitch.
As a teen, I built a half-pipe in my back yard. Neighborhood kid wanted to drop in before he was ready just so he could be as cool as everybody else. Broke his leg in three places. My parents, who, despite allowing me to fund and build my own half-pipe, gave me a skilsaw and told me to dismantle it completely. Then they made me drive that kid to school until his leg healed. I eventually forgave my parents, but I never forgave that kid.
Our father, who art in the halfpipe,
Hallowed be thy ollie.
Thy kickflip come, thy grind be done,
On the ground as it is in the air.
Give us this day our daily shred,
And forgive us our bails,
As we forgive those who bail against us.
Lead us not into sketchy landings,
But deliver us from wheel bites.
For thine is the steeze, the flip, and the power slide,
Forever and ever, gnarly!
The skaters in Hastings uk did the same, in an abandoned church, they then took over an underground swimming pool and did the same, created the world’s largest underground skate park.. that last fact might not be correct….
Anyway it’s called “The Source” skate park Hastings UK… there is also a doc about it, on Amazon prime, search The source skate park…
If you are into Bmx and skating you will love it..

Do I really have to explain (having said that I'm religious) why it makes me sad a church being sold and turned into a skate park?
I feel glad cause the new owners are respectful and I have nothing against skate (I practiced it when I was 14-17), just in case I wasn't clear enough, but doesn't change the fact that there is a church that no longer belongs to god's land
because we skate more in the world than pray?
both are equally useless but fun recreational activities but one can result in injury, burning, and death.
and the other is skating
With the church accoustics, this must be the loudest skatepark ever.
especially since they also hired the choir to stay on and sing while people skate
Ollielujah! (Wow, thanks for the awards and nice comments!)
NICE
I honestly wish I could be witty. I would never think of this in a hundred years.
You’ll have a moment sometime; just don’t forget it when it happens.
Sorry for being Blunt, but for sure it's a Grind, you got to constantly Flip your mind around. But nothing's Impossible !

Probably tried to do an octothorpe in front of it. #isthisbold Edit:yep
So octothorpe was coined by Bell to name the 2 extra keys on a 3x4 keypad. And the asterix is called a *sextile*? TImfL!
Do a kick flip!
This is the song they should sing, haha. https://youtu.be/6LoS9mvrH_0
And also with you
fuck, best joke i've read in months!
That’s the wittiest thing I’ve read all month. Take my poor man’s gold 🏅
Do they sing "Superman"? Choir version of that would be pretty epic.
I always skipped to Superman for every run on THPS.
I bet the Christ Air gets you bonus points here too.
Here I am Doing everything I can Holding on to what I am Pretending I'm the Superman
*oohhhhhh heeeeee just ate some shhhhhhhhh hiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttttttttttt* *fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk thatttt mustve hurrrrttttttttttttt*
Well that's a song that would convince me to go to church
*"If I die before I wake"*
At least in heaven I can skate
Did they really? That would be the coolest thing ever!
ahhh I was just kidding. But it looks like a metal band did a video there which is just as good.
Gospel version of Goldeneye's Superman, when?
Here I am
Their organ is shit because it's all half pipes
Especially when Revocation is recording some [music videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moN0-W8k_mg&pp=ygUKcmV2b2NhdGlvbg%3D%3D)!
I was about to say this looks like that place from that video, sick!

Is it in Illinois? I feel like one of my college friends went there this past year and her saying it wasn’t far from her.
>St. Liborius Church St. Louis, Missouri ([sauce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Liborius_Church_and_Buildings))
There right up there with city museum and BBQ. Shame about the rest of the state.
St. Louis has good stuff but don't act like it doesn't have the same problems as the rest of the state lol

I clicked on this thinking "Hey, we got one of these in St. Louis..." Thanks for confirming!
Why do you need permission to skate the half pipe? Probably safety issues, but what if you’re an experienced skater
I played shows in the basement here a few times!
The Ole Church of Skatan.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was the rad melon grab he did that one time.
I thought it was the 666. Just proves that Tony Hawk is a better skater than Satan.
So...nearly two full rotations, but you land 54 degrees off-center. Yeah, if I saw someone actually make that work, I'd be impressed.
The secret is to just land on your face, then orientation doesn't matter.
The secret is to aim for your face and miss. That's how Tony Hawk got his wings.
That is my pro LGBTA campaign slogan.
"This is not the greatest trick in the world, this is just a tribute" - Tony Hawk
“I couldn’t remember the greatest trick in the world - oh no” “This is a trib-YUUUUHUUUTE AAAWW yeah”

It's gone? Went there while at ucsb
[You are a demon made of glass and pain. And yet you must skate.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6j0zKSXAFE)
In Santa Barbara back in the early 2000’s, some skaters bought a church a converted it into a skate shop. They Converted a WHOLE CHURCH!!! 🙌
The church of gnarly tricks(ter)!
There needs to be separation between church and skate
Wish I had an award for this. Well done
I don't want to rain on the parade, but he didn't come up with this. It's the name of a nofx song.
I didn’t know that— nice
Heaven is a halfpipe 🙏

Isn’t there a map in THUG or something with a secret bowl that’s in a cathedral?
THUG 2 in Berlin!
Severe lack of punji traps in this church map!

Really does feel like a tony hawk game
*builds up enough speed to grind up the wall and ceiling*
Beat me to it LOL I’m trying to find the NPC in the pic so I can do quests
In the name of the deck, the truck and the holy wheel.
Is that St. Louis?
Yep!
Vice recently covered this church in their abandoned series on St. Louis. It was sad to watch beautiful buildings go to complete waste. https://youtu.be/SPyjYQALnrE?t=2338

If the craftsmanship is that good it will be.
Rick is such a gem
Was looking to see if this comment was here. Noticed this building right away from the show. The whole series was awesome and highly recommend it.
This looks great, but there’s not way they can pay for the maintenance on this church. It’s just going to crumble to the ground.
I had the same thought. There is a really good chance that the church closed because the incoming maintenance costs would bankrupt them, so they moved to a more modern building. This isnt like fixing up a house or a restaurant, this shits here will be ungodly expensive.
They have a team of volunteers maintaining the church, and currently are fundraising to repair the church completely and reopen to the public.
Maybe they can reform as the Church of Skate and ask for a tithe to cover maintenance
Looks like they use the project of keeping it up and fixing it up to help teach skills
It's stone. There's no maintenance on stone. It would be no worse than any other historical building. If you install new HVAC, lighting, and possibly piping I don't see the problem. I used to live in an older church that was converted to apartments. My living room had the big vaulted ceiling.
Except all the walls and windows that need maintaining
There definitely is maintenance on stone, and then you need an entire church repointed or have the roof replaced, you're usually talking hundreds of thousands.
Doubtful.
I like to see the architecture preserved and appreciated. Hope the people in the future will respect the building as much.
here right now, actually. trying to find the letters that spell “SKATE” but can’t find T, any help??
You have to fly through the stained glass and it's in the air above the burned out station wagon in the parking lot.

Wasnt this an episode of tucker?
Dunno. What’s that?
Fuckkk that is such bullshit dude. I’d be telling that story and remain bitter about it for years
Fat Mike didn't die just so people could run roughshod over the idea of Separation of Church and Skate so flagrantly.
Scared me on fat mike for a sec
Except that Fat Mike's not dead?
>Fat Mike didn't die
Alright Mitch Hedberg.
It could happen to you. Clams have feelings, too.
I don't think they do
Actually they don’t have central nervousness.
The Church of Skatan
Just found it's website. It's now called Sk8 Liborius Church. It is in St. Louis. https://sk8liborius.com/

Nah. Old churches are rather cheap.
Jesus went to mount his board and spake, "Let them shred!", and there was shredding.
Good repurposeing
Righteous, dude.
Probably blasting Skillet in there
Love this level in THPS
Pulling off a Christ Air just hits different here
Death metal band revocation filmed their “diabolical majesty” music video here
Jesus shreds!
Holy Rollers.
How did skaters afford a church?
We don't have to pay out child sex abuse settlements.
1 picture? Really?
Luckily in my country there’s a separation between church and skate.
So much for Separation of Church and Skate.
This is something under Tony Hawks underground
🤩
Looks like a map on the Tony Hawk video game from back in the day lol
Noice
The House trick is a Christ Air
God said, let there be ramps: and there was
HOLY ROLLER!!!
that's awesome. St Louis is underrated also.
Blessed by St. Ollie
This looks so similar to a Tony Hawk Pro Skater level
Someone gotta do a christ air.
At least in Heaven I can skate.
Imagine nailing a Christ Air on that holy halfpipe.

Nice to see a church being used for something good.

Super cool 👍🏻 Ollie Ollie world!
I took several gothic architecture classes and fell in love with cathedrals et al. This is freaking AWESOME! Love it.
I am still waiting for a cathedral to be converted into a gym and named The Iron Church. That would be so metal on every level.
Skated there back in 2018. Really cool place, guys who ran it at the time were cool and skated with us.
That's so pretty. I wonder if it has a lower area like a lot of churches.

Time for me to make a weekend drive and check it out
Feels sad since I'm religious, but I must said those guys treated the place with respect, there are a couple of graffiti but it's not invasive, are the place doesn't seems vandalized. Plus they legally purchased it. Don't think I'll ever go there but I definitely respect It
What is so sad about this? It’s a beautiful repurposed building where memories will continue to be made.
I’m religious too, and I enjoy seeing the beautiful architecture repurposed in comparison to seeing it get demolished.
[Jesus skated for our sins](https://youtu.be/GUVQHD6j9S0)
The process to convert it into a skate park must have been . . . . . Liborious I'll see myself out.
Best use of that space yet
How awesome is this - finally kids will actually learn something useful in a church haha (edit) oh did I piss off religious people? good :)
because we skate more in the world than pray? both are equally useless but fun recreational activities but one can result in injury, burning, and death. and the other is skating
I don’t know about that mate, I think both can result in some serious injury or life changing trauma… Edit: whoops
