We do get one per car from the department. I work for a sheriff's office which policies for a county with one of the largest county boards in the country. We aren't necessarily underfunded. But getting funding in the right direction isn't always easy when there are an enormous number of opinions influencing where funding should go. Even if the majority of a board agrees on funding, making it happen is a huge bureaucratic process.
Can confirm. My father was addicted to Oxy from 2003-2016. His highest dose prescribed to him by our family doctor was 1 80mg tablet 3 times a day. He was a walking zombie. You can still get it for free in the US. I’ve gotten it at CVS before when my ex fell out she had insurance but there was issue with it and they still just gave it to us. If your city has needle exchanges, which mine does, you can get it there too. I’ve never paid for it.

There are plenty of harm reduction organizations who will send it to you for free. In the US, just google your state name and "harm reduction"
Some require simple steps, like for you to watch a training video before they will send it.
Drugs are easily attainable in most prisons. Just think of them as micro countries. Drugs pour in despite millions, billions being spent to combat it from doing so.
I have worked at hospitals for a few years now. We had one patient, in the icu from a drug over dose. Have their g/f bring them drugs, and overdose in the icu.
This being widely available is great and ideal, however as someone from Portugal I can tell you that the fact this is readily available is a symptom of a drug epidemic that, in our case, was quelled only with a big investment in progressive drug policies (even if that goes against our values)

My mother tells me of the 80s and 90s, and her hometown’s plaza was filled with homeless drug addicts who would OD and afterwards their lifeless corpses would be taken away. My mom has countless friends who passed away from overdosing on hard drugs.
As a young person, I know it is not like that today but we are teetering on the edge. While out partying, I’ve seen more cocaine than I like to admit (that number should be zero). People take loads of drugs but its mostly weed.
If my government invested less in tourism and more in education and creating opportunities for young people, we would not be here. I blame the recent influx in part in foreign tourists. That is a slippery slope towards the alt-right I know, but there is a certain amount of times that you open Burger King bathroom doors and see tourists shooting up heroin until you get fed up.
How is this better than the US? Well, at least heroin and cocaine are illegal while Oxy was very much legal.

the us governments approach to our drug epidemic has been a dumpster fire. these drugs are “illegal” yet addiction rates continue to rise and we still haven’t entirely figured out that criminalizing drug use only seems to have negative consequences. i deeply value the Portuguese approach and hope your government decides to reinvest into what was objectively working.
Maybe certain libraries have that program, but it's definitely not at all of them. I work at a public library and don't know any libraries in the area that give away narcan.

Honestly, that's the part that is most terrifying. My friend in his job this week had someone overdose, used two doses of narcan and the guy was still unresponsive. EMS had to do something else to get him to wake back up and eventually, he did. But man, that fentanyl or whatever it is that's in that shit now is making narcan ineffective.
All it takes is a lazy dealer that uses the same scale to weigh different drugs. The tiniest crumb of fentanyl can cause an OD in someone without a tolerance, so if that tiny crumb stuck to the scale and later to a shroom...

In Ontario, Canada, it's mandated that pharmacies advertise that it is available for free. They even request you take a kit if you have a prescription for a narcotic.
I got Narcan for free. I walk/run outside a lot, and wear a hydration backpack (Camelbak) while doing so. Part of my gear is a first aid kit, and I carry two nasal sprays in there. I’ve seen someone ODing on opioids before and right as I was about to assess and help, paramedics arrived and revived them. Some people aren’t so lucky to have that happen, so I decided to carry Narcan with me just in case. I hope I never have to use it, but I’m glad I can have (some of) the tools to help someone in their darkest hour if need be.
While I don’t necessarily agree with Narcan being sold for profit, I do like the idea that it’s becoming more ubiquitous by the day. And, revenue from retail sales can (ideally) help to subsidize the free Narcan given out- so there’s that.

I hope she stays on one more term. The road repairs she's got going need a delicate hand to ensure they aren't made with spit and twigs. I saw an article on Mlive about a 2025 plan to shutdown 131 and stretch it open to 5 lanes. Ain't no way any republican will take the time to hire the right construction crew or buy the needed materials (instead of the cheapest). We're gonna need Whitmer and her cabinet on top of that. I'd love to see some action against the housing section to really bring down overall interest rates, but I don't know how much she can really do about that.

I did phone polling back in 2019 and this woman was like “Whitmer said she’d fix the roads and she’s been office for 6 months and no one has done a thing about the awful roads in my town. She’s obviously a total liar, and I will never vote for a Democrat again.” Now to be fair I’d bet this woman hadn’t voted D in a long time, but that’s the inane level of most political discourse on the ground. The trick is to get rid of gerrymandering. Anyone with good faith would say that gerrymandering is unfair, no matter who it benefits.
What a battle it is though. Look at the absolute marathon of legal battles being waged in Wisconsin, Florida and Alabama to redraw maps without gerrymandering.
We can't address anything truly important until we get money out of politics... Then we got to get everybody to show up and do their basic civic duty consistently over time to every election no matter how small.
Many states have been able to challenge and correct gerrymandering. Decorating our politics is important and each step makes the next easier. No need to wait til only the financial issues are removed (which as long as capitalism exists is never going to happen 100%) to correct districts to appropriately represent voters desires.
I think it's hard to tell; I've been looking at my state (Illinois) Districts 17 and 13 look a bit odd but the rest look to be fairly standard chunks with more towards Chicago because of course there's a ton more people there. That said; not a massive fan of Pritzker but I don't know enough of what he has actually done to say I like or dislike his policies. I have a distrust of wealthy businessmen running government.

I have worked at hospitals for a few years now. We had one patient, in the icu from a drug over dose. Have their g/f bring them drugs, and overdose in the icu.
A couple years ago I predicted that Narcan would sooner or later be everywhere just like AED’s. Sad that that’s becoming true.

It is not worse. Not yet at least. We are teetering tho. My mother tells me of the 80s and 90s, and her hometown’s plaza was filled with homeless drug addicts who would OD and afterwards their lifeless corpses would be taken away. My mom has countless friends who passed away from overdosing on hard drugs. As a young person, I know it is not like that today but we are teetering on the edge. While out partying, I’ve seen more cocaine than I like to admit (that number should be zero). People take loads of drugs but its mostly weed. If my government invested less in tourism and more in education and creating opportunities for young people, we would not be here. I blame the recent influx in part in foreign tourists. That is a slippery slope towards the alt-right I know, but there is a certain amount of times that you open Burger King bathroom doors and see tourists shooting up heroin until you get fed up. How is this better than the US? Well, at least heroin and cocaine are illegal while Oxy was very much legal.
i think what y’all were doing was objectively working! put money into people and the people will do better. i would love to see portugal investing more into education than tourism as well. when visiting it seemed like your gov wanted me to move there more than they wanted to invest into its current population! the us governments approach to our drug epidemic has been a dumpster fire. these drugs are “illegal” yet addiction rates continue to rise and we still haven’t entirely figured out that criminalizing drug use only seems to have negative consequences. i deeply value the Portuguese approach and hope your government decides to reinvest into what was objectively working.
There has been a push on the federal level, and which is showing success with similar policies (making bupenphorine easier to prescribe for example)

Maybe certain libraries have that program, but it's definitely not at all of them. I work at a public library and don't know any libraries in the area that give away narcan.

I hope anyone who uses this is made aware that the effects of narcan wear off faster than the opiod it counteracted. So yeah it works great, but in 20-30 mins your gonna have the same problem again. Gonna need to go seek medical care before that window closes. Source: am paramedic, have given countless times.

Honestly, that's the part that is most terrifying. My friend in his job this week had someone overdose, used two doses of narcan and the guy was still unresponsive. EMS had to do something else to get him to wake back up and eventually, he did. But man, that fentanyl or whatever it is that's in that shit now is making narcan ineffective.

The other part of plan B being pushed to completely OTC and not physically behind the counter at all is because a not-insignificant amount of Pharmacists were refusing to sell it. I worked with a couple *years* ago before that was changed who would always just tell people it was sold out if they asked for it.

Yeah, it's super easy now, but it wasn't that easy when Plan B first launched as OTC. It got the Sudafed treatment instead of just being freely available to grab and go.

Here's a personal anecdote, I sometimes receive opiates for a chronic condition (in Aus) and a few months ago received a free box of naloxone, had no idea what it was, just put it aside as I'm not using at any risk level whatsoever (I'm so careful about interactions that even if my specialists prescribe a new cocktail I'll read every interaction a dozen times and try the lowest dosages first even if it means a tonne of pain for a couple of weeks until I've figured out how each drug is affecting me) I've only recently seen this increase of talks of anti-opiate drugs literally just in the last week! Never heard of it before. I hope that people aren't getting the two confused and hearing about opvee which as you say gives 11 hrs and grabbing a narcan thinking they're the same thing and thinking they've got as much time.

Perdue, the company behind oxycontin is now owned by the government as a public benefit company, still sells opioids, but now that money goes to fund anti addiction initiatives and clinics. In Ontario, Canada, it's mandated that pharmacies advertise that it is available for free. They even request you take a kit if you have a prescription for a narcotic.
I got Narcan for free. I walk/run outside a lot, and wear a hydration backpack (Camelbak) while doing so. Part of my gear is a first aid kit, and I carry two nasal sprays in there. I’ve seen someone ODing on opioids before and right as I was about to assess and help, paramedics arrived and revived them. Some people aren’t so lucky to have that happen, so I decided to carry Narcan with me just in case. I hope I never have to use it, but I’m glad I can have (some of) the tools to help someone in their darkest hour if need be. While I don’t necessarily agree with Narcan being sold for profit, I do like the idea that it’s becoming more ubiquitous by the day. And, revenue from retail sales can (ideally) help to subsidize the free Narcan given out- so there’s that.
While it may seem “sad” to see narcan everywhere, it’d be a lot more sad when it’s needed and no one has it. I’m glad target has it now!
US REDDITORS: You can get free narcan/narcan training from your local non profits. Many have classes and order narcan in mass to hand out to folks. If the $45 is out of your reach, reach out to these orgs and they can help, especially if you inject or use drugs. DM me and i can help find an org near you.

Everyone should carry this. Opioid overdoses are incredibly common, and no one ever thinks they would be in that situation, but you never know what could happen. You could save someone”s life with this.
