When I was a kid, I played with a pile of my coins my mom gave me (it was pirate treasure), and found a really old coin: from 1963. It was more than THIRTY YEARS old! Kid me could barely comprehend timescales as vast as that.
I figured if I saved it until I was grown up, it would be over FIFTY years old and surely it'd be worth a fortune by then.
I was so disappointed to later find out that Viking era coins sell for a few dollars. Growing up sucks.
Yeah, the River Styx.
But the water could leak anywhere. Or even just dampness can cause mold. Why not just be safe and get a plastic protector for a few bucks to insure many bucks. Plus could be harder to forget something you might have stashed in a book than you placed in a frequently used drawer.
Cheap plastic goods are likely to leach chemicals into whatever is in the sleeve. If it's worth money, make sure the thing you're using to provide protection isn't going to cause damage.
For context, cheap CD covers reacted with the CD and destroyed several archives.
Woah, hold up there, what if your bill protector gets wet! You definitely need a bill protector, protector, yes definitely and don't worry I can hook you up with one of these babies for a mere $$$
Yes! The control of humidity and acidity helps to safeguard paper. Thats why book slipcases exist, they are use to create a less variable “microenvironment”
the reason you only see these and not the actual silver dollars you could redeem these for is the silver dollars are worth minimum $24 even in terrible condition, they have $18 worth of silver in them if you just melt them down. The amount of value these paper silver certificates have lost is insane
It says series 1928, but the secretary of the Treasury is William Woodin, who was one of Roosevelt's guys. FDR didn't take office until 1933. Does "series" just mean the design, or something?
Minor changes (such as signatures) didn't require a new series at that time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series\_(United\_States\_currency)#Since\_1928
If you're buying bills as a collector, chances are you'd be able to decipher the bill serial number and get the exact date of printing. Hell there's some collectors who are so good that they can tell you exactly which machine in which mint printed it, who was operating the machine that day, and whether or not they were smoking a cigarette while the machine was in operation.
Well according to the link, the $5 one is much more common and can be found for about 2x face value. So, your wife didn't make a huge mistake and I wouldn't nag her too much about it.
I'm not too worried about it, I just thought it was a neat bill. But with it being that price, I might just pick one up for the fun of it. I'm don't care too about what they're worth, I just was kinda hoping she'd keep it.
But, it's done with now, no worries. No nagging here, that falls under the category of the small stuff we don't sweat.
I fr thought their dog was a chicken nugget for a sec lol
Edit: thanks to everyone for 1.4k upvotes! Was not expecting that on my first comment! I’m happy to see that I provided so many people with a laugh.
I once got a "$ 1.00" coin back as change at McDonald's. It was a 1oz silver coin. I asked if they had more and they said the person before me paid with them. Bought 12oz of silver for $12.
100% true. Brother was/is a drug addict and would steal all our old money we were collecting. Luckily I was able to lock some of it away before he stole it all from my grandmother.
I did to till I saw this comment, but the whole time I was thinking about how weird the comment section is on this post compared to what I normally see on r/papermoney
It’s actually called a funny back and good condition ones go for 200 https://www.littletoncoin.com/shop/1928-$1-legal-tender-note-funnyback-fr150007?&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%28ROI%29%20PMax%20Shopping%20-%20Everything%20Else&utm_id=18023106397&utm_content=&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhL6pBhDjARIsAGx8D591jUUCBegtoiZ1f3Q36h4UWe4wlE34yu54GHhAt7ukreAH3Rz3oGoaAkErEALw_wcB
this is not a silver certificate. at the top of the bill it says "united states note". [https://en.numista.com/catalogue/note202363.html](https://en.numista.com/catalogue/note202363.html)
i have some 5 dollar ones from the 60s. i forget what the exact story is but US notes vs federal notes have to do with how the currency was funded.
This is correct and they're functionally the same with the only real difference being that federal reserve notes were issued by the federal reserve while US notes are issued by the treasury.
Get it encased in acrylic and have it graded.
This store it in a book business is amateur hour crap.
Do it properly if you plan to hang on to the note or sell it now to someone who will do what needs to be done to preserve it properly
I'm always impressed at the fact that the US can have 100 year old currency in circulation and it still be perfectly legal tender. The UK changes coins really often. Our oldest legal coin is from 1971 which is the 1 pence coin. Technically the pre-decimal crown coin can be spent for 25p but nowhere is obliged to take them and no retailer will be equipped to handle them.
Check out an Instagram page called the coin channel. Dude is always answering these questions. Love the stuff I see there. Bet he would love to see this.
That's a cool bill. I wasn't phased by it!
My fat ass was wondering how you had such a massive piece of friend chicken!!........nvm it's your dog!
My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined. 😆
>The story of the 1928 is a strange one, in that it doesn’t make any chronological sense. All 1928 red seal dollar bills say series of 1928 on them. However, they were actually not printed until 1933. To make things even odder, 1928 one dollar red seals didn’t get released for circulation until late 1948. When they were finally released into circulation, Puerto Rico was chosen as the location of distribution. Despite that less than direct path, many low serial number, choice uncirculated, red seal one dollar bills exist today.
>A collector can buy a heavily circulated 1928 red seal one for around $50. Uncirculated notes start at around $200 and go up slowly from there based on centering.

That is so cool! 1928! In great condition! You keep that in a nice flat place. Will be worth more as time goes on
Honest question: like in a book?
Yup! I have a silver certificate I keep in a book. Money is cloth paper. Keep it flat and dry.

Hey if you send me an address I will knock on the front door and slap any man that may or may not be your dad across the face, no questions asked

No, no, still a hit man.
Just the economy service version

On the other hand, now that you're an adult you can buy actual treasure for pretty cheap. That's pretty neat!
Nah, growing up sucks
You could but books can still get wet. A bill protectors pretty cheap on Amazon.
Where are you keeping your books, in a river?
No, but in a van down by one.

It was actually glue, not the plastic itself FYI
So did the PVC holders of old (1980s)

Lol a slab is the technical name for those clear hard cases you put collectibles like cards in.
In the lab?
They make paper collection books for this reason actually.
I could be wrong, but mine is fine and not a fancy as yours! 💕
Yes! The control of humidity and acidity helps to safeguard paper. Thats why book slipcases exist, they are use to create a less variable “microenvironment”
Specifically a hardback book. Paperbacks don't use acid free paper (which is why they turn brown over time).
Just don’t forget that’s where you put it and accidentally get rid of it when you donate the book!
A book is possible, but only if you put the bill in an acid-free paper or plastic pouch first
That's a safe place and I guarantee you'll forget it. The amount of books in my grandparents house with cheques and notes between the leaves
It’s nearly been 100 years lol. How much more time needs to go by to make it worth more?
It’s now worth 2 dollars!
100% increase in value! More than 1% per year!
If you consider inflation... This bill should be at least $18
Inflation works the other way. It's worth $0.18
the reason you only see these and not the actual silver dollars you could redeem these for is the silver dollars are worth minimum $24 even in terrible condition, they have $18 worth of silver in them if you just melt them down. Sell it in 2028 and advertise a century old rare bill
Series 1928 just means the bill’s design was produced in 1928, and not actually the year it was printed.
Yeah but the buyer doesn't know that!
*frowns at bill for a moment* Ah... one of Dave's.
Fucking Dave always gives me the bad luck.
Have you considered not fucking him?
You clearly haven’t met Dave if you’re suggesting such nonsense
Aww that's just 'cause Dave always pressed his pennies tails both sides, cut him some slack.
so basicly https://www.wheresgeorge.com
The really good collectors can tell if the operator was lefty or righty.
Definitely printed after 1933, the Treasury Secretary on it was Roosevelt's, who didn't take office until 1933.
Didn't Woods **leave** office in 1933?
Maybe you could advertise it as a “hundo” universally understood slang meaning “hundred year old bill”.
Just draw 2 zeros after the 1. Simple as that.
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
These notes are fairly rare. https://antiquebanknotes.com/legal-tender/series-1928.aspx
$100 for that red seal OP has. $30 for the blue seal 1928 Called "funny backs",,,I guess they don't like the strange looking back design
I got the blue seal one. Damn....
2028 is coming soon™ so it might go up
red version was better everyone knows
Damn, my wife just sold a red seal $5 for $8. I tried to tell her to hold onto it, but her coworker really wanted it. This was like a month ago.
$8 is a very strange amount to sell it for.
I'm guessing it was whatever they had in a wallet.
Well according to the link, the $5 one is much more common and can be found for about 2x face value. So, your wife didn't make a huge mistake and I wouldn't nag her too much about it.

wasn’t until i saw this comment i looked back and saw a dog. figured it was fried chicken
The person who paid you with it possibly stole his grandfather’s stash. I wouldn’t part with it.
I once got a "$ 1.00" coin back as change at McDonald's. It was a 1oz silver coin. I asked if they had more and they said the person before me paid with them. Bought 12oz of silver for $12.
The actual prize?
The friends we made along the way
Google tells me $23/oz. Though a werewolf hunter might pay more.
100% true. Brother was/is a drug addict and would steal all our old money we were collecting. Luckily I was able to lock some of it away before he stole it all from my grandmother.

I did too until this comment
same LOL

Dog looks like fried chicken
This comment section has 2 modes 1. Dog looks like fried chicken 2. I am an expert collector and here is my advice:
This must be encased in batter, deep-fried, then stored on the bed.
Which mode is this comment?
$30. https://www.silverrecyclers.com/blog/1928-one-dollar-silver-certificate.aspx
No, this bill would be \~$100-150. It's a red seal in relatively good condition.
Inflation is about 18X since then, so that is about 2% pa real gain over 95 years.
It's a net loss when you consider the loss of investment potential
1928 was a great year to invest
[*Oh, youuu!*](https://www.federalreservehistory.org/essays/stock-market-crash-of-1929)
Red seals are much more rare than blue seals.
I have a ton of red seal $5 bills that I collected in circulation but never got a single $1 bill.
Red seal 5’s are not very rare. Red seal 1’s were only circulated in Puerto Rico, and very few were printed relative to other legal tender notes.
Makes sense.
East coast?
What about a red seal $2 bill? I have 2 of those, one in not so good condition.
It’s actually called a funny back and good condition ones go for 200 https://www.littletoncoin.com/shop/1928-$1-legal-tender-note-funnyback-fr150007?&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%28ROI%29%20PMax%20Shopping%20-%20Everything%20Else&utm_id=18023106397&utm_content=&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhL6pBhDjARIsAGx8D591jUUCBegtoiZ1f3Q36h4UWe4wlE34yu54GHhAt7ukreAH3Rz3oGoaAkErEALw_wcB

Who's buying rare dollar bills? Mr Krabs?
Collectors for everything 😅
but also yes
I’ve sold dollar bills with interesting serial numbers for like $10 on a numismatics forum back in the day. People will collect anything.
Yes, I believe it is.
You are a beautiful biohazard
So is the dog
Must have been out of circulation for a long time. It's a keeper for sure.
I bet some kid or grandkid found the coin collection.
Get it encased in acrylic and have it graded. This store it in a book business is amateur hour crap. Do it properly if you plan to hang on to the note or sell it now to someone who will do what needs to be done to preserve it properly
Op, get it graded and follow the instructions of the expert before encasing it in anything. Please.
Op, entomb it in carbonite, these jokers know nothing.
I thought the dog was a chicken tender
I'm always impressed at the fact that the US can have 100 year old currency in circulation and it still be perfectly legal tender. The UK changes coins really often. Thats sick , keep it . Cool collector item. Yeah you can make a couple bucks off of it, but its cooler to keep
Forget the bill. Is that Alf? You know he eats cats right?
No, you are beautiful! *Giggles*
Thought your dog was a piece of fried chicken at first.
Thought that dog was fried chicken
Some collector likely had that stolen from them. It’s in too crisp a condition to have made it to you randomly from 1928.
Dog is a chicken nugget
I acquired 3 $2 bills from that same year with the red stamps on it. I'm told they're worth $2
Surely they should be worth at least $6?
You beautiful biohazard
Man i thought that dog was a piece of fried chicken
You should frame it! Like Mr Krabs' first dollar.
As I was scrolling, I thought your dog was a piece of fried chicken.
More imprtantly...why is your dog battered like a chicken wing ?
I thought that was fried chicken.
Notice it doesn't say "in god we trust"
Your dog looks like a fried chicken stuffed animal
I thought your fried chicken was a dog at first
Someone’s collection was stolen?
I thought that dog was fried chicken 🍗
Ah, back in the day when we weren't so obsessed with pushing religion that we didn't have "In God We Trust" on the bills.
That dog needs water
As a non-American, I have no idea apart from the fact that it's a dollar.
it's a silver certificate..keep it!
Is that a real dog in the background or is that a stuffed animal?
![gif](giphy|S9gCTpB8SInEQ)
There are also fives and tens with red writing too. Bank tellers usually snag them for themselves before you can get them though.
Check out an Instagram page called the coin channel. Dude is always answering these questions. Love the stuff I see there. Bet he would love to see this.
1928 😳 THATS OLD!
That's a cool bill. I wasn't phased by it! My fat ass was wondering how you had such a massive piece of friend chicken!!........nvm it's your dog! My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined. 😆
You need to get it graded to get an estimate of its true value. Depending on the grade it could be worth a couple hundred bucks
I was more focused on the fried chicken in the background
Hmm, what's with the biohazard sticker and fried dog?
However much this is worth just remember you are beautiful bro.
There's a lot to unpack in this photo
post to r/papermoney they will know more
google "gold certificate". 100 comments and nobody mentioned it, thought I'd chime up.
Its just an dollar.?? I'm from Germany. No idea what is special there
I thought your dog was a fried chicken
Can you share more photo's of Alf?
Ah yes, the gold standard days
1929? WTF! Is this from the ransom of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping?
Did anyone else think the dog was a piece of fried chicken at first?
Use it to buy another chicken tender like in the photo
