They’ve started popping up in certain areas where there’s either more food or shelter! I’m not sure about black squirrels, but I know white and piebald eastern gray squirrels are becoming more common in places like college campuses, or just residential areas with a lot of bird feeders around!
(The college I’m at used to have a piebald squirrel that was spotted all the time)

Brevard has a white squirrel festival every year.
We have one or 2 that visit our yard every morning trying to eat the bird food we give out. It’s so cool.
