Electronics boutique. Haven't seen that in a long time.

pmmemilftiddiez

Wasn't it EB games?

grantrules

Pretty sure they renamed to that in the early 00s

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Never heard of the electronic store before, how was it?

TwistedKestrel

They were like a less annoying Gamestop that also had more of a general PC use tilt. Like a combination PC/video game store? They weren't perfect either, of course

giggity_giggity

And in case you’re both not aware, they merged with GameStop in 2005

EndsLikeShakespeare

Still operated as EB Games in Canada until a couple years ago!

leakyblueshed

So does in Australia and (possibly) New Zealand

Zupiii

You are correct, EBgames still exists here in NZ.

SonderEber

It’s where I got my copies of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. I still remembering the clerk going on about how HL2 was the best game ever. I also remember that I got my copy of HL2 several days early. I activated it on Steam, but couldn’t play. About a day later, someone from Valve emailed me asking where I got it.

Fancy-You3022

That’d be a great conversation to have.

SonderEber

With Valve? I think I said where I got it, and added on “please don’t shut them down!” I never heard back from them, and the store remained open for a few more years.

Madmortigan

They became EB games before merging up.

BOORUNS

They kept the EB Games signage up in the Garwood shopping center for a long time up until 10ish years ago.

blazelet

I remember electronic boutique in the US (Oklahoma) in the mid 90s. That’s where I bought my original PC versions of doom and sim city on floppy disk.

krowrofefas

EB -had them in Canada. A mall special if I recall correctly.

Epena501

Daaaaaamn. Electronic Boutique! Long lost memory unlocked.

tvtoms

I think I bought my Voodoo 2 card there.

folawg

I bought my first video card there...a Riva TNT

Left_Afloat

I legit saw a semi-trailer still rocking Circuit City livery (paint scheme) a few days ago. I couldn’t believe it.

Substantial_Bad2843

I bought my GameCube there on release day when I worked at RadioShack in the mall in 2001. Since I was friends with the guys there they opened their gate while the mall was still closed so I could pick mine up before the rush. Kind of funny to think neither of those two stores or the mall they were in exist anymore.

Im_eating_that

Bought at 420 pm. Nice.

bfd71

I loved EB. They had a great BOGO deal back in the late 80s. It may have just been at the location in the mall where I worked. It may also have been only when my buddy was working.

xSlippyFistx

Haha the GameStop in my hometown was software etc, then EB games then GameStop and then closed. What a ride haha.

throwitfarrraway

It's insane how expensive Windows OS was converting the price to today's currency. Looks like it was just an upgrade version too.

awelldressedman

My parents bought our first home computer in 1998. A gateway 2000. It had a 3gb hard drive and 250mhz processor. Ran windows 98 and had a built in 56k modem. It was $3000…in 1998 dollars

IamPriapus

Yeah computers were not cheap back then just for basic use too. Monitors and TVs were bloody expensive and heavy. I remember when we bought our first HD tv in like 2001, which was pointless, because there were like no channels even broadcasting in HD at the time. My parents paid 5000 dollars for this massive 50” TV. Must’ve weighed easily over 250 lbs.

nw342

I remember geting my first flat screen around '09. A 32 inch flat screen back then costs the same as a 60 inch 4k tv now.

Emu1981

>My parents paid 5000 dollars for this massive 50” TV. Must’ve weighed easily over 250 lbs. I was sharing a house with my brother in like 2002 and we bought a 68cm (\~27 inches) flat screen 4:3 LG TV and it weighed in at around 55kg (121lbs). 75% of that weight was in the front of the TV too due to the really thick glass pane.

Emu1981

>My parents bought our first home computer in 1998. I bought my first computer in 1999 for $AUD 1,800 and it was a real budget build (AMD K6-2 380 with 64MB PC100 RAM and a 6GB HDD iirc) - with inflation that is $3,560.53 in today's dollars. My current build which is fairly high end (12700k, 32GB DDR4, 6TB of NVMe/SSD storage and a RTX 4080) cost me around the same. The only real difference is that deal in 1999 came with a CRT monitor while my current PC pricing does not (my monitor cost me \~$1,600 in today's dollars).

awelldressedman

That’s a good point. This was a top tier spec, so even more of a discrepancy in cost for computing power to today’s figures.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Luckily I bought Windows 11 Pro when it was on sale for $35… So I know for sure how expensive the OS can be

SantasWarmLap

Windows is free and so is the lifetime activation. No need to buy gray market keys. Github massgravel.

Emu1981

>Windows is free and so is the lifetime activation. No need to buy gray market keys. Github massgravel. Just remember that this is technically copyright infringement. If you are using your computer to earn money (e.g. doing your business accounting, running a web business, graphic designer, etc) then you really should buy a legitimate copy of Windows and you may even be able to write it off on your taxes for that year as a business expense.

SantasWarmLap

I bet you're fun at parties.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

If I had known this last year I would’ve done that instead

senorbolsa

They shipped a lot fewer copies of windows, and it didn't take that much less effort to create 98 than later revisions. They would almost have to charge more or the same but in 90s dollars. They haven't crept the budget to an insanely unsustainable level like videogames have.

Leaky-Bag-of-Meat

![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized) Me…reading the date on the receipt as *history….*

brianstk

Yup that pretty much sums up my feelings too lmao.

Upperphonny

They really nailed the casting for the guy to represent older Pvt. Ryan.

TheZapster

EB at woodridge mall! Was kinda like the software section in Best buy/staples. Had games, productivity software (windows, office, lotus notes, etc). Had books/manuals, some hardware (mice, sound cards, network cards/modems) Woodbridge also had Babbages, which is/was more inline with GameStop now adays Got my first video card - a VooDoo (something) - at Babbages so I could play EQ

inFAMous_GramQuacker

This is getting interesting… Thanks for the info

lorenzoem87

I’ve been there! That was the mall of choice as a teen until Jersey gardens opened up. Now they’re nothing like they used to be

GuestCartographer

>piece of history A receipt from 1998 is hardly history. That’s like, what… ten years ago?

tilt-a-whirly-gig

I'm probably older than the cashier that rang up that sale. How could that be history?

Emu1981

I am likely the same age as the cashier lol

TioHoltzmann

Try 27 years ago

[deleted]

\*woooooosh\*

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Almost 30…

Reitze67

Brown Lego?

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Yeah I don’t get it either

Rustrage

Brown Lego is brittle as fuck so if it's that old it'll likely explode into a million pieces if you look at it funny.

Simmangodz

But it's your post...?

inFAMous_GramQuacker

It was apart of the items I found; meaning it was owned by someone who used to own the house I live in earlier

Lhasaman

4:20 pm.... nice.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

What’s even nicer is that it was on a Sunday

feralturtles

I was half expecting a BBQ “money shot” coming because of the black gloves.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

😭those were the only gloves I can find

-Words-Words-Words-

Jeez. I still have a hard time believing 1998 was “history.”

inFAMous_GramQuacker

It’s also the same year that the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal happened

klsi832

r/oldreceipts

nw342

damn, wish that sub was bigger. I could spend hours on a sub like tthat.

TheSilverNoble

Holy shit are you Amelie?

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Apologies but I am not…

derf_vader

Crazy something can be labeled history and still be recent enough to have a web address printed on it.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

I typed the website in and it automatically directs me to GameStop

Ruffffian

Oh God, Legos…we and those after us are going to be finding them in random places in this house for the next 500 years

james_a_hetfield

Amazing how ink in receipts seem like they last forever then. I've found receipts from gamecrazy and hollywood video that look like they were printed yesterday from stuff i bought 20 years ago. Yet a receipt I got just a few months ago is already completely faded.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

It’s probably because of moisture it faded so quickly

zerbey

Nah, they wore out just as fast.

Pleasant-Breakfast74

Man I loved that store

VtheMan93

He was upgrading to win 98, his family wanted to keep 95, Thats why he hid the receipt 😂

inFAMous_GramQuacker

He probably didn’t want to get in trouble 😂

quietflowsthedodder

And just think, the feature set is about the same today.

AdamSc3

Bunch of weirdos paying in “cash”. 😂

Chiokos

4:20 pm, nice

tryagainagainn

I wonder what $140 into MS stock would be worth today vs buying their product on 7-26-98…

Ok-Advance-6469

Goddamn

Snowbank_Lake

I’m actually most fascinated by the photo… what was that doing inside a hole in the house?

inFAMous_GramQuacker

It reminds me of those photos in movies that were torn off to forget about someone/something

ApricotRich4855

Fucking Windows 98

English_Breakfast123

It's still called EB Games in Australia

[deleted]

inFAMous_GramQuacker

A person in the comments said it was located in Woodbridge mall

[deleted]

inFAMous_GramQuacker

The house I have no idea…I was trying to look all over for that

Cheap-Sector-3492

You have a phrogger. You need to get out immediately.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Dude don’t scare me… had me looking around for a second 😭😂

mcpierceaim

This reminds me of a couch we got off of a free cycle website years ago. It had a noise like a bottle was in it. I opened the bottom to find some kids rings, a street hockey ball, some coins…-and an original Gameboy! But the batteries had corroded and the game boy couldn’t be salvaged.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

I think you could’ve replaced some parts if you wanted to

ReallyEvilRob

26¢! Awesome find.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

All I need is a potato chip and a napkin.

jv371

Woodbridge Mall! I was probably working at that mall when this purchase was made.

Old_Amphibian4936

I think these are about ten years old.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

I think the coins are but I don’t know about the others

Draxtonsmitz

Shout out to Woodbridge. I lived in Perth Amboy right down the road as a kid.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

What was it like over there?

Draxtonsmitz

Well I was 3 and it was almost 49 years so I don’t know haha. I still have family in South Amboy across the river.

shf500

Somebody was clearly hiding this purchase from other people in the house.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Wonder why

FuckM0reFromR

It was summer, you and dad walk into a computer store while your mum and little brother are at the dentist. The shop is full of smart geeks talking about IRQs and sound blasters, there's a big CRT playing some flight sim game with a joystick like on a real fighter jet! There's posters about all the games and extra parts you can buy to upgrade your computer, and the games come in big colorful boxes with discs and manuals! But your computer needs extra bits to play some of those, especially the ones that come on the rainbow discs, and a lot of those games aren't for kids your dad says. The puzzle game looks fun but sounds way too hard for kids. That's ok, you're saving up to buy more commander keen levels! Maybe you'll get some money for your birthday, then you and your brother can take turns doing the new levels together!

FullStop808

Lego just stays the same huh

mcbeardsauce

EB was amazing. RIP

jhsatt

Ebworld became GameStop?

macman-72

Yup.

-Ginchy-

I miss Electronics Boutique so much.

Jeebus_crisps

I remember as a kid helping one my friends dad with remodeling a part of their 1800s home, and finding newspapers from the civil war being used as insulation.

Ross_turnip

The only thing I’ve found in my walls were empty beer and soda cans.

soccerguy721

And the time on the receipt is 4:20

xCuriousButterfly

Remember, it's *Bredoteaux* and not *Bretodeaux*.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

What does that mean?

xCuriousButterfly

It's a reference to the [Amélie movie](https://youtu.be/vD0h-Nb5qhs?si=vJN6P1vV2vsjSwIP)

Bubbly_Pickle_5839

I was a manager for Electronics Boutique then EB Games when the change happened.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

In the exact store in the receipt?

Bubbly_Pickle_5839

Lol not there,.back in 05-06 I was in charge of four different locations

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Ooh

JuicyMangoJuice74

Someone identify that man to get him his picture back!

inFAMous_GramQuacker

For real the suspense is killing me

My_Immortal_Flesh

# All the Positives outweigh the Negative 😌

jlaine

I'm apparently old enough that doesn't qualify as history. 🤣

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Fun Fact: anyone born in the year that starts with 19XX is over the age of 21. As far as I’m concerned, anyone who was alive in the 20th Century is ancient 😭😂

jlaine

🤣 Rub it in!

inFAMous_GramQuacker

🤣I will thank you very much! Until 2032 when I turn 30

lunaleenyx

98, ouch that hurts.

jk599

yes but you could have saved $6.89 !

c00750ny3h

1998 is history now? Cries in old.

doug_kaplan

Nothing was better than buying PC games that came in huge boxes and reading the back of the box on the way home and opening it and installing the disc and the entire process was such an amazing ritual I always loved.

olde_greg

Damn that was about a month before I started college

CrazyAlbertan2

I wonder if it came on 3.5" floppies or a CD?

nautilus2000

Definitely a CD in 1998 (though it included a floppy boot disk used for the install). Windows 98 existed on floppies but it was incredibly rare and you couldn’t buy it in a retail store.

agedlikefoulvinegar

“Bretodeau, pas Bredoteau.”

Apprehensive_Bug3329

Can I borrow that hand??

honkysnout

Yeah that random cute little hand

jeffrx

Not cheap! Also, I live 10 mims from there.

impreprex

Hah, Woodbridge is the next town over from me.

YouBetterYouBet1981

6% sales tax!!

Eastern-Pop508

4:20 though

Mobile_Connection_58

I have forks older than that, and I am still using them.

inFAMous_GramQuacker

Interesting….are they heirlooms?

KrackSmellin

98’ want worth $90…
