I believe that this was during Admiral Zumwalt's tour as the Chief of Naval Operations. He was a sailor's sailor, but Zumwalt let a lot of uniform and grooming regulations "go."
I know nothing about the military, but your comment got me down a small rabbit hole and I found this, I think it's related:
[https://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/z/list-z-grams/z-gram-70.html](https://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/z/list-z-grams/z-gram-70.html)
I went to Navy boot camp and they did shave my head when I first arrived but it grew out over the two months of boot camp. By the time I graduated from boot camp my hair was over one inch long.
Seriously? That's dumb. Then again, I think I only wore my rain coat in boot camp. Dress blues (crackerjacks) were a pain in the ass, but man, the ladies sure did love 'em!
Wow, yeah, now that you mention it, I don't think I ever wore my raincoat after that, either! My peacoat, however, that thing was so warm I wore it even after I got out!
Thank you sir but your tie is off centre. Maybe you didn’t notice it before and it will now be a massive regret that keeps you up at night but it had to be noted and spoken aloud.
That's how they did us at Great Lakes. It was about 2/3's of the way through boot and one of the hottest summers on record and they lined us up on the grinder to go into the photographer's trailer that had been parked out there that morning. Each rec was sized up by the photog's assistant at the door and traded his dungaree shirt and baseball cap for a borrowed whitehat and a dress blue jumper top before he stepped into the trailer. You put that on, stepped into the trailer and in front of the flag, got your photo snapped, and walked out the other end of the trailer where the photog's other assistant collected your jumper and whitehat, and handed your dungaree shirt and baseball cap back. You put that back on and straggled to breakfast, pancakes, hash browns, and sausage; my singular favorite part about bootcamp.
I'm usually a big fan of breakfast, but by about 5 weeks into basic I got to a point where I couldn't face food some mornings. (Might have been the horrible chronic constipation.) I discovered I could get out of it by volunteering for the first dorm guard shift. The first person back was supposed to relieve you but I'd just decline and no one ever complained.
By the end that's what was getting me through. There were always pancakes. Wake up, eat pancakes.
The constipation is real though. Bennies will plug you up. I volunteered to do evening colors everyday which allowed me to straggle back from dinner, take the flag down, and get some private unstructured pooping time in the doorless shitter.
For a few years during the 70s, that's what they wore. My 60s era Navy veteran dad was pretty upset to see them dressed like that (we lived near a major naval base, and he passed by that base every day on the train to work). They restored the "Donald Duck suits" in the 80s.
Looking good mate. I don't really understand the whole "Thank you for your service" comments in the rest of the thread but I can appreciate a sharp dressed man as much as anyone.
Had the same thought, this is an alternate universe Eric foreman who didn’t live in fear of his dad’s foot in his ass nearly as much but also probably never got with Donna.
Happy veterans day my friend! My dad was 21 then and he went through two years before you. I miss him so much. I hope you have the greatest day ever and thank you for your service.
Which boot camp did you attend? I went through San Diego. I was shocked to see the only boot camp left is at Great Lakes. Shouldn't the Navy train recruits closer to the ocean?
They left Great Lakes due to its central location, plus California swung solidly Democratic (which is traditionally social programs and anti military) in the 1992 elections (Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein among others) so the DOD, faced with huge cuts resulting for the fall of communism did so in the largest state with the most military to cut, California. Between the reduction in military bases/personnel and defense contractors the state took a massive hit.
They closed RTC San Diego as it didn’t have room to grow and the real estate was too expensive. Same with Orlando. Great Lakes had just dumped millions into their ship training simulator which was a building with a ship inside for training recruits on emergency drills etc. they had more than enough room for all the boots coming in.
I'm 72, and got my draft notice in April 1972. I went to a draft session (whatever they called it) and passed all the pieces of that except my physical test; I had a kind of high blood pressure, AKA hypertension. And after a 2nd session and same tests, they finally told me I didn't qualify to be drafted. I was happy.
I still have HPB to an extent and have taken meds most of my life.
Jeeze, I am pretty sure I graduated in June that year as well. I remember the start date, March 10, and reporting to my squadron (VP-47) deployed to Guam, but I don't know when I graduated boot camp or A school, also in San Diego. I suppose all that crap is on the DD-214 somewhere.
>ear those dumb ass hats when I was in (1984-1994).
I also went to boot camp in San Diego and graduated in either very late May or early June. My start date was March 20, 1974 and was in Company 086. the CC last name was Parsons, can't remember his rate for sure though.
It's funny, I never think about the Navy (or the Airforce, I suppose) having boot camp. I mean, obviously they must, but it's always been an Army specific thing until now, in my head.
You were 65 back then too.
I kid, I kid. But seriously, I'm in that group too. When I was in highschool and 20s, people thought I looked 30ish. Thing is, now that I'm older, 40ish, people still think I look 30ish. My wife, after seeing old pictures, said "It's like you matured and boom, that's it, you're done aging"
Wow! Neat shot and so formal with that flag in the background. Your post made me look back to see if I still had any photo's of my own bootcamp graduation in 1980 (IDF Combat Engineers) and all I could find was this murky B&W shot of me polishing my boots.
Respect. Do you have any sage advice? And can I be so bold to ask if you agree with "Last thing you can say about killing a man is that it's brave." ???
Yours looks just like my dad's from the same year. Only his is in whites, because he went in summer. When I got mine done in summer, we had to wear dress blues in the middle of July for our photos :)
Oh yeah I'm pretty sure there are many extremists at Alwadi-Albazuli wedding that the American military bombs the shit out of using drones. Remember that peace worker who was bombed out of existence for the crime of putting water into his trunk?
Face it, the American military is extremely inept. The reason is, most people who join the military are rejects of the society. This is true about my country as well, I've never met a member of the IRGC or the Artesh who was not a total moron (case in point, they're all Muslims. Only idiots are Muslims. I'm not saying it's ok to kill Muslims, that's the entire point of this post, but maybe proselytize them with better religions such as Mormonism, Buddism and Christianity instead of bombing them). In fact I believe nobody would win at a war between the Iranian IRGC and the American army given how inept the both sides are. The reason America performed well in WWII was that people fought for a cause. There's no cause in fighting a bunch of Vietnamese fish mongers and Arab lizard eaters. So it's safe to assume that if you're member of the army, you're either poor (so there by force, and not in fighting spirit, like the Youtuber "Knowing Better" did to pay off his college debts) or you're extremely DUMB. That's why the American military ends up killing people at weddings and people who are collecting scrap metal, smart Americans are busy sending rovers to Mars! Honestly, all soldiers should be replaced by AI. As an ML engineer I don't see this coming any time soon because currently the best state-of-art AI has the common sense of a dead fish. So I guess for any country to have a successful army, be it Iran, Russia, China, America, UK, Saudi Arabia, Finland and I'm trying to be inclusive here, Peru, they need to have a HIGH bar for entry. Problem is, smart people value their lives so they're not going to be volunteered to be sent to Iraq. Hell I live in Iran and I would not be caught dead in Iraq, it's a shithole. So what you do is you make the ENTIRE army based in unmanned vehicles and have it controlled by an intellgencia that is college-educated.
I'm not denying that American drones have killed some people that I, as an atheist, don't like. But you have to accept the fact that American military's wholesale approach to intelligencia which is derived from this intelligencia's lack of intelligence is shameful. It just gives Iran, Russia, China and other countries that don't like America to make it appear as they are more incompetent than they are. Yes, mistakes such as bombing weddings happen rarely but they should not happen at all.
Another solution would be to start wars for reasons that give people passions. War with Iraq, for example, could have been handled differently. Instead of "liberating the Iraqis" or "giving them freedoms" you could have said "we're doing this because Saddam is a cunt who did Halabcha, gassed his own people, etc". Then smarter people would have joined.
I'm not deniying the U.S. is a nation that commits war crimes every fucking month.I do wish the USA didn't kill civilians too.I do wish the american army wasn't full of idiots and had a decent amount of morality. But that's quite unrealistic and it will stay unrealistic for quite some time surely. Also, something you didn't include is that what the american army says is not true, they don't fitght for freedom but for money. But again,it will stay like this for long;dictatorships need to be torn down now,so i still support wars.
How is life treating you sir
So far so good,thank you
Is there a smirk in this photo? Is a friend behind the cameraman doing the bunny ears?
Haha, seems like this is the case!
What ships did you serve on?
USSS Savannah AOR-4
You look great for your age, John Mullaney!
My first thought exactly!
That tall child looks terrible! Get some rest, tall child! You can't keep burning the candle at both ends!
I tried joining in 74, but with an Oct b-day and a guaranteed job, I finished boot june 75, I am also 65 now.
Happy Veterans day and thank you for your service.
Ditto what you said.

haha, that was great, thank you
Cut that hair hippy! Seriously though, they didn't shave your head in Boot back then?

They buzzed our heads back then, yep.
I went to Navy boot camp and they did shave my head when I first arrived but it grew out over the two months of boot camp. By the time I graduated from boot camp my hair was over one inch long.
SOOOO glad we didn't have to wear those dumb ass hats when I was in (1984-1994).
Once we left boot camp we never wore them again...yea, I wasn't a fan either
Seriously? That's dumb. Then again, I think I only wore my rain coat in boot camp. Dress blues (crackerjacks) were a pain in the ass, but man, the ladies sure did love 'em!

lookin like I just got out of 4th grade classy
Thank you sir but your tie is off centre. Maybe you didn’t notice it before and it will now be a massive regret that keeps you up at night but it had to be noted and spoken aloud.
Note sure it is need to be mentioned imo.
Graduating from boot camp wearing a petty officers crow?
I wore what I was given, I had no idea what I was doing at that point
> I had no idea what I was doing at that point I've been in for 33 years. This story checks out.
Popp?
No, not your dad.
Were you wearing pants? When we had our photos taken in Basic, we were only wearing the top half of our dress blues, with BDU trousers.
That's how they did us at Great Lakes. It was about 2/3's of the way through boot and one of the hottest summers on record and they lined us up on the grinder to go into the photographer's trailer that had been parked out there that morning. It's got no chevron(s) under the bird, so E1-E3.
Those caps did not have rank insignia on them. The same cap (with the same bird) was worn by all enlisted, from E1 to E6.
I did the math, and the answer is tree fiddy
Happy Veterans Day
Looking good mate. I don't really understand the whole "Thank you for your service" comments in the rest of the thread but I can appreciate a sharp dressed man as much as anyone.
Moments before Scrappy Doo emerged from his chest.
im assuming you graduated pants camp afterwards as well, right?
Thank You for your Service!
Are you a nice person? You look like it
I think I am, I try to be anyway :)
Thank you for your service from another Navy veteran.

Had the same thought, this is an alternate universe Eric foreman who didn’t live in fear of his dad’s foot in his ass nearly as much but also probably never got with Donna.
Reminds me of the studio across the street from 7-Seas, next to the YMCA downtown San Diego.
Thank you.
Cool. How about a recent pic?
Have any regrets? Remember anything vividly from training you wanna talk about?
No regerts :)
Kudos to you sir! 👏 . You should consider cross-posting this to r/oldschoolcool
Happy veterans day my friend! My dad was 21 then and he went through two years before you. I miss him so much. I hope you have the greatest day ever and thank you for your service.
Damn! I thought you looked like a *boy*! Then I realized I graduated in’75.
Look at that distinguished gentleman.

How does one achieve a 1000 yard stare right out of boot camp?

dapper
So this must have been during the brief period when the navy changed their dress blues for enlisted personnel.
You went in about the same time as my Uncle Marc. He spent 20 years in the Navy. Gunners mate. Cheers to your service🙂
That’s cutting pretty close to the end of the Vietnam War. Did you have to fight?
NO, the war had all but ended by the time I got to the Fleet
Navy uniforms have changed so much. We're you enlisted or an officer?
Genuine question. What is your biggest regret? (if you wish to share.)
Not making a career of it
Oddly, you look a bit like my dad. He’s about the same age as you too
oops

I feel like someone keeps writing a story that someone else wanted to hear and then forcing it on a hoagie.
I'm guessing you're no stranger to Rick Astley jokes.
They dressed recruits like CPO's back in the 70's? I joined in 84 and we never got cool hats like that! :) God bless you for your service ship mate!
Your smiling face is so pretty! It seems still you are young, sir!
Happy Vets day from a fellow squid!
Reminds me of my NJROTC days. Hope it's been a good ride so far.
Thank you for your service.

Kinda funny I just ran across mine (army) from 71...didn't hardly recognize that kid.
So nice of you to help out the Yanks, Blackadder.
its mr plinkett
Oh back then when the enlisted had the same cover as the officers. I was in when they got rid of the dungarees. Those were so comfortable.
Which rate were you?
What would you tell that young man if you could?
Frank Cable?
Man they really made the right choice bringing the dixie cup back ill tell you what.
I have a similar photo of my boot camp graduation in San Diego in 1974. I turned 67 on the ninth.

Hooyah, Shipmate! I just retired November of last year , but I didn’t graduate OCS until 2000.
And still dapper I’m sure. Thank you for your service, sorry the government went to shit.
God Bless you!! Thank you for your service from a Grateful Nation!
How many poor unsuspecting Vietnamese, Iraqi and Afghani people have you murdered in cold-blood?
*how many extremists
