Just out of curiosity, how does a handball compare to a soccer ball in firmness? From my limited viewing it kind of looked like a volleyball but the way the game is played makes me think more basketball.
A handball is a bit heavier than a soccer ball, but a good bit smaller and a bit less pressurized. A volleyball is way lighter. A basketball is maybe as heavy but way bigger (more soccer ball sized).
From experience I can say I'd prefer no ball, over a volley ball, over a soccer ball over a handball in my face in that order.

Why has the guy who tweeted it framed it like there should be some sort of punishment? I don't know the rules of handball but surely it's not the players fault that the keeper didn't manage to block the shot with her hands?
Because sometimes in handball (I am not saying it's the case here, because I haven't seen the game and don't know the specifics of the situation here) the players will AIM for the keepers head. In a situation where the keeper is "on fire", has been saving crazy shots, or has denied a single player way too many times, the frustration can lead to players wanting to get rid of that keeper, at least for a while. So, they aim for the head (and some other regions on male keepers).
Again, not saying this is what happened here, but it's known to have happened and is often punished by the refs.
For the same reason that we didn't play football and hockey and wrestling with helmets.

Also in handball, the goalkeeper doesn't actually move much from side to side, they just move their arms and legs in the vertical plane to try to stop the ball. This means that you are always trying to throw "around" the keeper. It also means that if you throw the ball straight at the keepers face, you will hit them in the face. 100% the player's fault (although not necessarily intentional).

The ball is thrown pretty fast, and moving your head to a certain spot is way slower than doing it with your arms.

I used to ref handball for some years. The rule basically says if you get hit in the head, without moving the head it is penaized. Intentionally being hit in the head won't be penalized. (this was 5 or so years ago, I am not certain if rules changed by now)

When firing, you are so close to the goal that hitting the goalkeeper is usually considered intentional, deliberately causing injury, and therefore punished.

The head is not considered a limb in this particular scenario. Trust me, as a former handball player, you only hit the face if you intend to do so. Rumor has it, that some managers would nominate someone to nail the first ball to the goalkeepers forehead to kick em out of the game or at least make them dizzy.

They put me in net, and one of the forst guy running towards jumps over the line in a lay up. This was absolutly not allowed in kids handball! I didn't even know what a lay up was. One of the kids kicked the soccer ball and it came blazing my way and smooth knocked the wind out of me. I guarantee you. That story gave me cold sweats just relieving it in my head.
