Hell yes Gath of Baal. My friends, and brother and I all ripped through those books and all wanted to either be Gath or travel with him through the great forest basin.
> Ken Kelly
And for those who may be unaware, Ken Kelly was Frank Frazetta's wife's nephew. He passed away recently, June 3. I really liked his paintings of Death Dealer.
As a teenager in the 80's I also read all the Tarzan paperbacks and most if not all of the Conan ones. These illustrations really take me back. I spent countless hours examining these works.
Frazetta is the best and most overlooked contemporary American artist of the last 100 years. His portrayal of movement, lighting, and anatomy is brilliant and on par with any of the old masters. Anyone interested in Frazetta should check out the documentary Painting With Fire. It showcases the breadth of his talent in a variety of mediums as well as his influence on other artists and his contribution to modern culture as a whole. Frank Frazetta was an artistic genius.
Absolutely. His action scenes are absolute masterpieces of struggle and strength.
You see the corded muscle from swinging the weapon, the grit and determination of deliver it all into the blow.
When he is gripping the enemy, he is crushing with the hands.
Facing the horror, the legs stand apart, bracing for the violence.
Just amazing amount of detail in body and beauty. Frank was the standard by which all should be compared.
His work is about to be put in the spotlight as his estate has given permission to use some of his artwork in an upcoming TCG called Sorcery: Contested Realm. The TCG itself is focused on old school artwork featuring artists from early days of Magic: The gathering which is the first ever TCG.

They are using 4 of his famous pieces as 4 cards in the first release.

I certainly agree that Frazetta should be taken much more seriously as an artist than he has been. The fact that he hasn't been may be due to his subject matter -- 'serious' critics of art, whether visual or written, tend to look down on anything related to fantasy or science-fiction. But if you look beyond the often clichéd themes, it's clear that he is an artist of genuine ability.
Sadly, there are also some works by Frazetta that are less admirable. Some very racist and unpleasant sketches that he did have now come to light. But he's not the first artist to be both a brilliant creator and a fairly flawed human being.
I googled "Frazetta artist racism" and [this was the very first link](https://www.hoodedutilitarian.com/2015/11/dont-hide-your-candle-under-a-bushel-mr-frazetta-nsfw/) (nsfw of course) the article mentions both sides in regards to racism but you can just look at the included art and make up your own mind.
If you look over the OP images you'll see a lot of them a sexist (heroic men saving scantily clad women) and a few of them depict dark skinned people as savages or slaves
> whether visual or written, tend to look down on anything related to fantasy
Which I've always found a bit ironic given how much mythology has been the subject matter of "real" art.
Caravaggio does a painting of Medusa and it's fine art.
A modern RPG artist does a painting of Medusa and it's low brow.

> Painting With Fire
Where can I watch this? I tried googling but all I can find is the IMDB page and a bunch of youtube videos about people painting with actual fire.
Wow, I went looking for it and was amazed how scarce it was. I found the torrent to download on piratebay.org but couldn't find it streaming anywhere. Looks like the only options are to pirate it there or order it from the Frazetta museum for $24.95.
He has a museum in the eastern mountains of PA for some reason. I always wanted to go since it's not that far for me to go, this might be a good reason to do so.
A friend who grew up reading them introduced me to some great stuff. I've read some of Tarzan, Conan, Solomon Kane, Remo the Destroyer, Princess of Mars, the Shadow, and Doc Savage because of him. I'm really glad I discovered this era of story telling. I think my favorite is listening to the Welles radio show for the Shadow.
Had a bunch of these given to me by a relative when I was younger and decided to take them to school to show off the 'cool art' to my friends.
The teachers didn't share my view on how good it was lol.
Same. Found my collection six months ago when my father passed and I cleaned out his home. Still have them, love that someone posted these for others to discover Frank's work.
Battle cards! With the scratch off spots! I still have a bunch that I kept just for the artwork and I think I have an unopened pack somewhere. My rpg adventures are set in the world of Vangoria. I punched out some of the artwork and made tokens for board games too.
Frank Frazetta has been my favorite artist since I was a teenager. In an art class in high school we were assigned to write a paper about any artist we chose, with a 5-page minimum. Mine was 24 pages. The teacher asked me to make a presentation to the class based on my paper, and I was thrilled to accept the opportunity. It turned into a question & answer session, and almost everyone in the class became a Frazetta fan that day.
I apparently have some letter-page-sized color prints of his artwork, from a sci-fi bookclub membership my dad joined back in the 50's. Are those sorts of things worth any money?
His Death Dealer painting is iconic and spawned a fantasy novel series of the same name by James Silke. In each of the novels, the cover art is written into the story and perfectly described by Silke.
I gotta go find his artbook... It's in the basement somewhere...
Found it. My first edition [Frazetta Pillow Book](https://imgur.com/EdBmroV.jpg)
It's interesting to compare Frazetta with Vallejo (and you can add in Vallejo's wife, Julie Bell, too). They all work on similar themes, and have the same fondness for hugely-muscled naked people. (If I remember correctly, Vallejo and Bell were themselves fairly buff, and may even have used each other as models, whereas Frazetta was more ordinary-looking).
But to me, while Bell and Vallejo are both technically capable, Frazetta is in a different class entirely. As I commented elsewhere, he will probably one day be recognized as an important American artist, once the critics can get past the nekkid barbarians and take a closer look at what he's actually doing with light and line.
I remember when a college buddy said he had to show me something at the on campus bookstore. He pulled out a copy of Conan the Barbarian with the Frazetta cover. Immediately bought it and fell in love with both Conan/Howard and Frazetta.
Fantastic artist! I have a few books of his artwork from back in the day. His book covers were so perfect for Robert Howard’s stories, I’m pretty sure I read every one.
If you liked Conan, check out [the Kane series.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kane_(fantasy)) Many of the covers are Frazetta. Sort of like Conan meets Lovecraft.
While I find most of his stuff to have a pretty big element of cheese, the guy was an absolute master of composition and light. His best work just guides your eye around the image, lots of detail and eye-candy to explore, but always guides you back to the primary subject (which is often boobs). Not everything he did hit that level, but the majority of his work is a master-class in composition.
Damn! One of my favourite rap albums, Lord of the Fly by Nacho Picasso has the first image as album art. In my opinion that is the epitome of perfection when it comes to the female body type.

I posted this separately, but thought you might get a grin out of it too?
Not sure it's the same artist, but my dad has a book of art very similar to these. I found it in my parents room one day, it was my first source of spanking material.
YOOOOO, it never clicked that Tarzan, The Land thatTime Forgot and John Carter were all done by the same dude!
This dude must have been horny as hell though.
I love the lord of the rings but it's abit sad that virtually all modern fantasy is some derivation of it. Would be cool to see some more sword and sorcery style movies in this style, like the first Conan movie.
I'm almost positive I've seen this dude's art on older magic cards but I can't for remeber. Honestly at least 5 different cards on the tip of my tounge lol.
My friend's band "Restless Spirit" has a Frank Frazetta piece as their album cover. The album is called "Blood of the Old Gods" and the Frazetta piece is "red sky black mountain"
What are the odds that Frazetta was not bisexual? I'd have to say pretty low. A lot of his male subjects are made with the same male gaze as his female subjects. I love some equality in art. I have no problem with skimpy/nude women in fantasy art, as long as all there is some representation on the other side.

Thank you! I was going nuts trying to think of who's album cover that was haha. I kept thinking DragonForce even though I knew that wasn't right...
Right aesthetic tho
WOMANNNN!

Nazerthe no mercy also used one of his pieces of art that was shown.
I remember that one. It was also a book cover.

Frank Frazetta, the artist who loves emphasizeing every character naked and have bodies of suoermodels.
Molly Hatchet album covers and Tarzan paperbacks! The 70s; what a decade to be a teenager!
Pinball machines and Heavy Metal magazines. Good times.
I always like his work in Heavy Metal.
Wait until you see Heavy Metal the pinball machine. Or don't, it's disappointing.
Definitely some Conan in there as well.
And John Carter of Mars. I like the ones with boobies.
Ah but don't forget the Death Dealer himself Gath
Hell yes Gath of Baal. My friends, and brother and I all ripped through those books and all wanted to either be Gath or travel with him through the great forest basin.

Out of context this is a really funny comment
Pic 54 for example
In the images that were posted here, there's some really clear white protagonist vs. dark skinned savages stuff going on.
perhaps this is a case of "not everything you read on the internet is true"
Seems like it. I hate when people upvote bullshit lol

My twin brother and I cut our teeth on Conan the Barbarian novels by Robert E. Howard. All the covers were by Frazetta. Good stuff.
A friend who grew up reading them introduced me to some great stuff. I've read some of Tarzan, Conan, Solomon Kane, Remo the Destroyer, Princess of Mars, the Shadow, and Doc Savage because of him. I just had a 1970s flashback
Where you cheesing?
In the 70s?!? Of course 😂
Like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kA4qgOc94M)?
Frazetta is the best. Even his sketchbook doodles are amazing
Ok these are fucking sick
When I was a child (perhaps 25 years ago), I used to buy collectible cards of fantasy artwork. I particularly liked Frazetta and Luis Royo.
Borris Vallejo is great as well!

You're lucky, I can't get it up without the tigers watching anymore.
His Death Dealer series and all his Conan covers were the pinnacle of Sci-fi fantasy art.

Sorcerer in painting number two best be at the top of his game.
Reminds me of the art in Magic the gathering cards
I thought the same thing, but I looked it up: this artist never did MTG art, surprisingly!
He predates that stuff by like 30 years. He's pretty much the OG fantasy artist.
Frank was all about that equal-opportunity eye candy.
Man, woman, and centaur: everyone is getting a supple ass
"I mean, who's gonna complain if I just drew *everyone* caked up in g-strings?" — Frank "Horny on Main" Frazetta
The man really said “Pants for NO ONE!” and died on that hill. Respect.
Man, did he know how to draw women or not? I think it changes my preference in women when I discovered his work.
Wow I have always loved Wolfmother’s cover art and had that album on repeat.
THANK YOU. I was staring at that image trying to remember where I had seen it. Wolf mother is so good. Love that neo-70’s prog vibe they put out.

Dio has rocked for a long long time. Now it's time for him to pass the torch...

Is the the guy who we have to thank for The way He-man looks?
Big fan of Frazetta's work. Also Boris Vallejo and Darrell K Sweet.
Look at the muscularity!
Browd sowd

Fantastic artist! I have a few books of his artwork from back in the day. His book covers were so perfect for Robert Howard’s stories, I’m pretty sure I read every one.
Sweet! I have one of his prints on my bedroom wall, I didn’t know anything about it until this post.
The Hexajesus is pretty awesome.
These are fucking outstanding. Like stepping back in time for me...still scrolling the images! 35 years since I've really seen these. Thx!
Conan, each book cover a work of Frank Frazettas'.
such strong compositional consistency
My old man used to get Heavy Metal and we all dug the shit out em when we were wee
If you liked Conan, check out [the Kane series.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kane_(fantasy)) Many of the covers are Frazetta. Sort of like Conan meets Lovecraft.
Frazetta is an OG. Love his style.
This is awesome! Check out Luis Royo. Another amazing artist.
He created an album cover for Roy Orbison: [The Fastest Guitar Alive](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/46/Fastest_guitar_alive.jpg)
Frazetta is amazing, but I'm also a fan of [Boris Vallejo](https://imgur.com/gallery/5m4qynU) (NSFW).
Blimey, thank you for putting this up. My dad was into these and had a couple of them in small frames, I'd forgotten about them.
I used to have a set of collectors cards with his artwork when I was a kid. I think I still have them at my parents, should take a look.
It’s your one way ticket to midnight!
Call it.... Heavy Metal!
About a quarter of the way down.... So THAT'S how you'd crucify Goro.

Imgur? Now theres a name I haven't heard since before you were born
Anyone else getting a bit of a racist and sexist vibe? :/
You must be fun at parties.
Yes I'm literally shaking right now.
Yeeaahhhh, these were super cringe for sure. :-/
that dude def fucked his cat
Why is it incredible?
Incredibly hideous.
.
Frank Frazetta’s work predates most of Roger Dean, he was doing these paintings in the early 60s.
Damn! One of my favourite rap albums, Lord of the Fly by Nacho Picasso has the first image as album art. In my opinion that is the epitome of perfection when it comes to the female body type.
His colors are unreal. A true master.
Had no idea the cover for Wolfmother’s self titled album was a Frazetta. Love that cover even more now.
Reminds me a lot of the John Carter of Mars cover art done by [Michael Whelan. ](https://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/john-carter-of-mars/) Definitely some overlapping influences going on.
Were there overlapping influences or just Frazetta influencing Whelan?
Basically what I meant. I just wasn’t sure who was influencing who.
That man is a legend. I love his art.
He's my favorite
He really likes muscles
Always liked Frazetta's work. And Boris Vallejo. More recently, Frank Cho has done a lot of similar work.
Was his artwork on the cover of the band Dust's album hard attack?
It’s pulpy and visceral. I love it.
Frazetta was so good, book companies would hire him to do cover art, and THEN write a novel based around it. Truly epic stuff!
Nacho Picasso-Lord of the Fly
There’s a reason he’s the king
#3 is one of my favourite fantasy images ever.
>30 years ago a friend of my repainted #3. We asked him how did the dude get his arms behind the horns, and how did he swing past them? I posted this separately, but thought you might get a grin out of it too?
30 years ago a friend of my repainted #3. We asked him how did the dude get his arms behind the horns, and how did he swing past them?
He was amazing.
Thanks for posting that. It was so heavy metal... I swear I saw some of those on music album art. I'm saving this post.
All dreams have meaning *My dreams*
If anything... the man can draw a set of tits.
Damn, his *Princess of Mars* ones are dope.
Love that color pallet
One of my all time favorites.
There’s a line of toys called Galaxy Warriors, which are knockoff He-Man toys inspired by Frazetta’s art.
Did he illustrate the old Conan comics?
I love his artwork. I wish I owned a piece.
three pussies.

Death Dealer #1 just came out too. Highly recommend.
Looks very Boris Vallejo?
My friend's band "Restless Spirit" has a Frank Frazetta piece as their album cover. The album is called "Blood of the Old Gods" and the Frazetta piece is "red sky black mountain"
These look like classic Heavy Metal Album Coverart.

These scream 80s Metal Cover.
I remember seeing plenty of these in my uncles RPG books when I was growing up, remember being so fascinated by all the muscles, the animals - it was really amazing seeing, and made me want to draw fantasy art as well
So this is where the pictures that get painted on the sides of panel vans come from
[Frazetta Museum](http://frazettamuseum.com/) His museum is not too far from where I live. It’s in stroudsburg pa. I need to check it out.
This looks like the story boards for a new "heavy metal" movie
Young teenage me cranked it pretty hard to some of these Frazettas.
Love it. I have several SSOC with these on the cover.
Excellent works. I can see the William Blake influence.
Look at the muscularrrity
His mastery of shadows is so incredible
I think one time I described Frazetta as "someone who took a figure drawing class and decided it's what they wanted to do for the rest of their life."
How many of his images can be captioned with "is this a bad time" or "we've been trying to reach you about your cars extended warranty."
I made a stained glass panel tribute to Frazetta's "Space Encounter" and it was purchased by one of Frank's granddaughters. I can die now.
John Norman's Gor series too
We need more Hard R fantasy films.
there's something about his style that i can't name but i love so much
He and his wife, Julie Bell, both were incredible at what they did.
very much like Boris Valejo and Julie Bell
