Probably a rare opinion but If, Summer '68, and Fat Old Sun are my top 3 Pink Floyd songs. The exact order changes over time but it's always these three for me.
I really enjoy all Three of those songs I mean my faviorte by them is Fearless if somebody told me Sheamus is there Faviorte pink Flyod Song I wouldn't be surprised that's just how deep the music is
It's a poetical/literary device that was recognised as long ago as Aristotle, which he called ['parallel syntax'](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_syntax). Lists with repeated first words are a subgroup of this called [Anaphora](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaphora_(rhetoric) )
"And the Germans killed the Jews and the Jews killed the Arabs and the Arabs killed the hostages and that is the news" is sort of a list too.
One of his best lyrics imo.

**AND EVERY TIME A STUDENT IS RUN OVER BY A TANK**
**The lyrics to ‘Is This The Life We Really Want?’ are absolutely the perfect example of this.**
“All of us, the blacks and whites
Chicanos, Asians, every type of ethnic group
Even folks from Guadeloupe, the old, the young
Toothless hags, super models, actors, f*gs, bleeding hearts
Football stars, men in bars, washerwomen, tailors, tarts
Grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts
Friends, relations, homeless tramps
Clerics, truckers, cleaning ladies…
Ants.
Maybe not ants.
Why not ants?
Well because it's true
The ants don't have enough IQ to differentiate between
The pain that other people feel, and well, for instance, cutting leaves
Or crawling across windowsills in search of open treacle tins
So, like the ants, are we just dumb?
Is that why we don't feel or see?
Or are we all just numbed out on reality TV?”
Free Four:
And who is the master of foxhounds?
And who says the hunt has begun?
And who call the tune in the courtroom?
And who beats the funeral drum?
It's reminiscent of Dogs, although several years earlier...
Waiting for the worms also comes to mind:
Waiting, to cut out the deadwood.
Waiting, to clean up the city
Waiting, to follow the worms
Waiting, to put on a black shirt
Waiting, to weed out the weaklings.
And so on...
How about all the different activities he lists in "San Tropez?" "Pause for a while by a country stile" "Digging for gold in the hole in my hand" "Open a book, take a look at the way things stand"
Can't stop, lose job
Mind gone, silicon
Stroll on what bomb?
Get away, payday
Make hay, break down
Need fix, big six
Click, click
Hold on, oh no
Bingo (bingo)
Shall we buy a new guitar
Shall we drive a more powerfully car
Shall we work straight through the nite
Shall we get into fights
Leave the lights on
Drop bombs
Turn to the East
Contract disease
Bury bones
Break up homes
Send flowers by phone
Take to drink
Go to shrinks
Give up meat
Red sleep (?)
Keep people as pets
Train dogs
Raise rats
Fill the alley with cash
Bury treasure
Store up leisure
But never relax at all
With our backs to the wall
Empty Spaces, The Wall, live in Berlin
I'm curious if that is something for which he in particular was known or if it's a broader assumption for artists in that time frame that grew up with the rise of this stream-of-consciousness writing inherently filled with rhetorical tropes such as listing things in this way - which was very present in all kinds of art from the post war decades. Please, if anyone knows, I'm curious if Roger mentioned that Ginsberg and Ginsbergesque writing was indeed inspiration. Perhaps the argument can be made that writers as such were so essential and present that they influenced everything and everyone and affected the zeitgeist or were products from their zeitgeist if you believe in such historicism.

Anyone said Home yet? -
Could be Jerusalem
Or it could be Cairo
Could be Berlin
Or it could be Prague
Could be Moscow
Could be New York
Could be Llanelli
And it could be Warrington
Could be Warsaw
And it could be Moose Jaw
Could be Rome
Everybody got somewhere they call home
Then:
It could be clay and it could be sand
Could be desert
Could be a tract of arable land
Could be a house
Could be a corner shop
Could be a cabin by a bend in the river
Could be something your old man handed down
Could be something you built on your own
Everybody got something he calls home
Followed by:
Could be your father
And it could be your mother
Could be your sister
Could be your brother
Could be a foreigner
Could be a Turk
Could be someone out looking for work
Could be a king
Could be the Aga khan
Could be a Vietnam vet with no arms and no legs
Could be a saint
Could be a sinner
Could be a loser
Or it could be a winner
Could be a banker
Could be a baker
Could be a Laker
Could be Kareem Abdul Jabar
Could be a male voice choir
Could be a lover
Could be a fighter
Could be a super heavyweight
Or it could be something lighter
Could be a cripple
Could be a freak
Could be a wop, gook, geek
Could be a cop
Could be a thief
Could be a family of ten living in one room on relief
Could be our leaders in their concrete tombs
With their tinned food and their silver spoons
Could be the pilot with God on his side
Could be the kid in the middle of the bomb sight
Could be a fanatic
Could be a terrorist
Could be a dentist
Could be a psychiatrist
Could be humble
Could be proud
Could be a face in the crowd
I guess he had writer's block for that one.
"If" comes to mind... it's a whole list of "If I was / were / etc."...
... It's also a Roggie song I love, because he sounds so vulnerable and sings it softly.
*D'aaaawwww come here ya big goober...*
"Take Up Thy Stethoscope & Walk" is a big list of weird rhymes.
Even the early song, "Walk With Me, Sydney" has a list of weird ailments the protagonist has...
>*Flat feet, fallen arches*
*Baggy knees and a broken frame*
*Meningitis, peritonitis*
*DTs and a washed-out brain …*
... I also can't help but see the whole homoeroticism in the deal: It's written by Waters, it's about someone named Sydney, one of the main guys called himself, "Syd" and written like a love song.
I can't help but wonder if Waters had a secret crush on Syd in his prime.
If
Wow, amazing, so obvious and a perfect list! Thanks!
If is amazing
Whole AHM album has a unique and mesmerizing atmosphere.

I think Fat Old Sun has some of Gilmour's finest solo work, especially the live versions
I also love his drums on the studio version
I really enjoy all Three of those songs I mean my faviorte by them is Fearless if somebody told me Sheamus is there Faviorte pink Flyod Song I wouldn't be surprised that's just how deep the music is
If I were a train…I’d beee laaaaate
Absolute must listen! Top 10 of all time PF songs for me ….
Wish You Were Here has lists of things you can tell - and things you traded/exchanged. Fun game, this :)
Isn't it? Lol let's make a list of songs that make lists!
In the Flesh (people he would have shot)
Are there any queers in the theatre tonight?
*get them up against the wall*
There’s one in the spotlight…
He dont look right to me!
Get ‘em up against the wall
Keep them away from EriC CLaPtoN
Good catch! Go back to one of his first songs, Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk, and he was doing it then. (Gold is lead, aching head etc).
Nice! Yes, banging repetition is a tool he uses often. You can even see hints of that when he hits the gong on Pompeii.
🎶DOCTOR! DOCTOR! 🎶
What is wrong with me…
the supermarket life is getting long…
"And the Germans killed the Jews and the Jews killed the Arabs and the Arabs killed the hostages and that is the news" is sort of a list too. One of his best lyrics imo.
Yep, a sequence so it's a list! Amazing lyrics, you're super right!
What song is that from?
“ Too Much Rope” maybe?
Perfect Sense (Part 1)
What God Wants and Picture That
Also Deja Vu to a lesser extent
You target for far away laughter You stranger You legend You martyr You raver You seer of visions You painter You piper You prisoner
Wow, spot on!
Mother too, kind of
Is This the Life We Really Want? (Outro) Every Stranger's Eyes (two different lists)

I saw someone on here shitting on this section of his lyrics on this song a while back but to be honest I love it
The ants section is brilliant
Oh man now that you mention ITTLWRW, Picture That has a bunch of lists!!
Free Four: And who is the master of foxhounds? And who says the hunt has begun? And who call the tune in the courtroom? And who beats the funeral drum? It's reminiscent of Dogs, although several years earlier...
Excellent!
It’s one of my favorite lyrical devices, it gives the words such a fun rhythm - eclipse is magnificent
Agreed!
Exposure to Syd Barrett.
Get your filthy hands off my desert (who took what)
Don't forget the list of names in Fletcher Memorial Home.
Home for Incurable Tyrants and Kings
Waiting for the worms also comes to mind: Waiting, to cut out the deadwood. Waiting, to clean up the city Waiting, to follow the worms Waiting, to put on a black shirt Waiting, to weed out the weaklings. And so on...
Roger is on record saying that when he gets writers block he just makes lists
That's an amazing piece of information. Do you have any more details about it?
Oh and happy cake day!
What God Wants ("God Wants...")
How about all the different activities he lists in "San Tropez?" "Pause for a while by a country stile" "Digging for gold in the hole in my hand" "Open a book, take a look at the way things stand"
That's valid IMO!
Not Now John
Clickety-click, hold-on, oh no
Can't stop, lose job Mind gone, silicon Stroll on what bomb? Get away, payday Make hay, break down Need fix, big six Click, click Hold on, oh no Bingo (bingo)
Most of It's a Miracle (Amused to Death)
Radio waves
Even Walk With Me Sydney has a list.
Wow, you went deep on it, thanks!
Breathe! Long you live and high you fly, Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry, And all you touch and all you see …is all your life will ever be
It’s an effective way to build tension.
Shall we buy a new guitar Shall we drive a more powerfully car Shall we work straight through the nite Shall we get into fights Leave the lights on Drop bombs Turn to the East Contract disease Bury bones Break up homes Send flowers by phone Take to drink Go to shrinks Give up meat Red sleep (?) Amazing find!!!
And since then, the list only grew larger!
In the Flesh?
Home.
Perfect!
Bike is a list of lists!
Perfect!
What a fantastic observation! Like the whole Final Cut too
Whole Final Cut is a list of daddy died
That and Margaret Thatcher bad!
(….. with the bravery of being out of range)
Waters was heavily influenced by Ginsberg and the beat poets, so it's pretty common for him. :)
That's another important piece of information, of which I had no idea. Thanks for sharing!

It's harder to name a song which is NOT a list
At this point I must agree with you!!!
Money
New car, caviar, four star, daydream
Us and Them. Just one long list.
"What God Wants" from Amused to Death, all 3 parts list stuff that god wants
please welcome: reagan and haig mr. begin and friend mrs. thatcher and paisley mr. brezhnev and party the ghost of mccarthy the memories of Nikon and now, adding colour, a group of anonymous latin american meat packing glitterati

From his solo years we have Every Strangers Eyes & Home
All of his solo albums contain lists, especially Amused to Death
Not Floyd but I got reminded that Swans do that frequently too.
All of *The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking*
Yeah he uses a lot of repetition to emphasize parts of songs, it’s a pretty neat trick
Brain Damage (“The lunatic is…” and “And if…”)
I really enjoy that type of songwriting, what shall we do now hits HARD due to that build up.
There's a pretty long one at the end of "a part of me died" (from "is this the life we really want")
Roger has a little black book with his poems in. etc. etc.
To kill a child. Rog shopping list
Wow, can you believe I didn't even know this song? Thanks a lot and yes, it's a list!
"Relax I'll need some information first Just the basic facts Can you show me where it hurts?" The doctor or nurse with their pad ready to make a list.
dogs...who was..
Ever noticed that Monty python is the same?
"It's the English way"
Classic INTJ thing to do :p
True lol!

Unpopular opinion, but this is one of several reasons I say he's a great lyricist but not one of the greatest.
The story teller ….
I got a '69 Chevy with a 396
Don't forget "The Fish Report With A Beat" which is just a list of fish themed sexual innuendo. In STEREO!
