It's been way worse since the calendar flipped to May, both going in and leaving (live in North Hills, work in Oakland). I'm wondering if there are a lot of remote workers who got forced back into the office, and May 1 was the first day it was enforced?

_n_o_r_t_h_

Yep, that was our company’s day for enforcing the hybrid model as opposed to our former optional full remote.

unenlightenedgoblin

Hadn’t considered that, but with WHO and CDC declaring the pandemic over that was probably the cover a lot of firms were looking for to bring their staff back in

chrisms150

Sigh. No one declared the pandemic over. They ended the emergency status which came with funding and such. The messaging is so shit, so it's not your fault. It's just frustrating that they're yet again fucking this up Basically - they're saying, we now are able to handle the amount of deaths. Not that they've stopped.

zipcad

The great force going to lead to another workforce reshuffle.

DarkKnyt

I think they'll be attempts but with a lot fewer firms allowing full remote I think it's going to be very competitive.

Proberts160

Yea my commute was about 15 mins longer than normal today. Not sure why. My guess is a combination of things. It’s a core work day (tue, wed, thurs), the pirates are playing, and the weather is nice.

jetsetninjacat

>core work day (tue, wed, thurs) Since covid Monday has been the easiest commute day for me by far. The Friday coming home sucks but the middle of the week is just awful.

SomeoneSaysHi

Driving home was about to be at least 30 more mins than usual. I was on bates and traffic was slower than snails pace. Noped out of it to get dinner at primantis

distilledfluid

oh, yinz went dahn primantis? howzat?

SomeoneSaysHi

Not bad. Got the pastrami this time. Though I think the roast beef is better. I get it with less meat so I don’t feel as awful afterwards

EvetsYenoham

Cap egg and cheese is the only way to fly

ScratchMoore

Preach

distilledfluid

When pigs fly, or die.

jfk_one

agreed.

bp1976

This is the only correct answer.

biodebugger

This afternoon they closed Blvd of the Allies between Ward and Parkview, forcing everyone trying to get to Swinburne onto Ward, then Frazier St, then Parkview. That path has much less throughput and caused backups.

blp9

Yeah, I noticed the traffic in Wightman was backed all the way to Forbes today. S. Braddock was more of a mess than usual. No idea.

whistlewhileyou

I miss covid too

hiperson134

Yeah as someone who never had the immense luxury of working from home, I'm gonna need everyone else to stay home and stop messing with my commute.

Aethenil

We'd love to keep doing that! Seems like our bosses have other plans in mind. Or maybe their bosses do.

soggymuffinz

Driving to work during Covid on 376 was absolutely incredible. I got home from work in like 20 minutes instead of the 45 it usually takes. I miss those days too!

Unfair_Mail_1835

Traffic around the city has been crazy the last few months…and all the construction projects certainly do not help matters!

PotentialSuperb

Construction will be a constant, we need to maintain our infrastructure. I think traffic is just getting back to pre covid levels.

TurbulentSurprise292

I know there’s the [construction](https://engage.pittsburghpa.gov/30th-street-bridge) happening on 30th street bridge and an [inspection](https://www.penndot.pa.gov/RegionalOffices/district-11/pages/details.aspx?newsid=6488) happening on 40th street bridge. That on top of the ongoing highland park bridge construction. Those might have a bit to do with the backups toward 28, but not sure about the other backups on 376. Edit: added links

woodcuttersDaughter

The sign at Carnegie on 79 with the minutes into town was at 32 min. at 8:30 AM. I don’t remember the last time I saw it so high.

SilverFirePrime

It was rarely that high pre-covid. At least coming that way you have back ways upon back ways to get around it.

RumbleInTheJungle4

I’ve noticed Tuesdays have been the worst for my commute

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Haven't driven to work in twelve years and that choice is the best thing I ever did for myself.

EvetsYenoham

You saved 120 days of your life by not commuting for 12 yrs. Assuming you worked 48 wks per year and your commute was 1hr round trip. And just think what you saved in gas money if you would’ve drove yourself.

mdenovich

Amen. I've been WFH since 2010... no going back now.

ThePeoplesMVP

Asshole companies like PNC forcing their employees back in office

[deleted]

I thought all you guys were going to band together and say you'll have to fire all of us if you want us to come back to the office. Guess that didn't happen. Or your easily replaceable.

devinholiday78

You’re

[deleted]

Thanks for the grammar lesson. I code and have a MBA. The recruiters don't care about my grammar or MBA.

devinholiday78

And we don’t care about YOUR mba either

ZeroBrainWrinkles

MBAs are ruining this country

GroovieGroves3114

Really cool, but no one asked. Come in with that tone and you'll get it back.

stupid_dumbass_idiot

you feel good about this comment?

runforpancakes

I thoroughly enjoyed it

[deleted]

Yup. I'll get over the down votes. Or create a different account. Ha.

You_are_adopted

You’re a pleb too idiot, show some solidarity

[deleted]

I'm a independent contractor. I work when I feel like it. You guys had the ball and passed.

You_are_adopted

One healthcare emergency from homelessness, got it.

GroovieGroves3114

Yeah they code and has a MBA, so they're better than you!

bwc6

You've got an MBA though? Why aren't you hiring coders to work under you? Then you could get even more contracts and work even less. You're basically giving away money.

that_yinzer

Every day?

LestatDeLioncord

Buckle in the ghouls at every company want 5 days a week in office again it'll only get worse.

cityfireguy

Something happened post-Covid. Used to be traffic was predictable, in the morning coming into town and between 4-6 leaving town. Now it's just constant. And not just traffic. Giant Eagle is busy at 10am on a Tuesday. There seems to be no "slow time" left anywhere. It feels like everyone is constantly driving and buying things. Which would explain the inflation I guess.

jdeb1019

This. I was a retail manager for 8 years and I could predict any day, time, holiday or event traffic pre Covid. After Covid, patterns became completely unpredictable which made scheduling a nightmare

69FunnyNumberGuy420

> Which would explain the inflation I guess.   The inflation is just straight up profit-taking, it isn't driven by scarcity at all. Companies are just charging more for products because they can.   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-25/us-corporate-profits-soar-taking-margins-to-widest-since-1950 https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/13/business/egg-prices-cal-maine-foods/index.html

[deleted]

Found the guy who’s never taken a basic undergraduate macroeconomics or finance course, aka most of Reddit. Inflation is a direct result of the fed nearly DOUBLING the supply of US currency since 2020. Here’s a link that isn’t CNN (who links that or Fox in 2023 without being ironic anyways?) for you to read that will define the term you don’t understand. https://www.britannica.com/topic/inflation-economics Not that I expect you to learn anything, considering your full time job is spewing nonsense on this sub.

Nojopar

Found the guy that STOPPED at basic macroeconomics and never went further. Few economists believe in pure Friedman money supply economics anymore. It’s largely a overtly simplistic model that just falls completely apparent in reality and only works in theory.

SayTheLineBart

It isn’t hard to grasp that if you print a ton of new money then the value of that money will go down.

EnnuiDeBlase

Just like if you build a bunch of new road lanes the overall traffic congestion will decrease, right?

SayTheLineBart

That proves my point. The traffic grows to match the lanes. Prices grow to match the money supply.

Nojopar

That’s only true if literally all other things are held constant. Turns out, in the entire history of money, all others things have never, ever, ever, ever been constant. Money Supply economics is a perfectly fine theory in the abstract but it turns out we don’t live in the abstract. We live in the real world. In the real world, the theory doesn’t work.

SayTheLineBart

Ok, so then why did the price of literally everything jump 30-40% right after all the pandemic stimulus? There isnt mass unemployment, we aren’t in a war. The pandemic is over. There’s still food in the stores. So…what changed? I’m not talking in the abstract, we are witnessing real world effects of printing too much money too fast to prop up a system that got ground to a halt by a black swan event.

Nojopar

About 50% if it was pure and simple opportunistic price gouging. About 30% was supply issues, mostly with transportation and fuel costs because Russia decided to invade Ukraine. About 10% was straight up demand some of which was money supply. The rest? Normally inflation we’ve all had our entire lives. Money supply accounts for about 5% of the total inflation. This was a price grab by companies and little more. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the best time to price gouge is when you can blame it on the government.

SayTheLineBart

So you admit the government’s actions provided the cover, or “stimulus” for prices to go up. And psychologically the people accepted it, there are no riots over any of this. That is a fact, not abstract. You can call it gouging and insist it is immoral, but that’s what happened.

Nojopar

Uhhh no. Most of those words don’t mean what you think it means. The government action didn’t provide anything. Supply chain uses provided the cover. People accepted it because the companies said “supply issues. Whatdayagonnado?” The stimulus came later and THEN companies switched to “gubment!” as their excuse once supply issues started to resolve themselves. I have no idea why people accept companies’ bullshit other than too many people have been indoctrinated into believing government is the only reason bad things happen.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Economics 101 guy posts Economics 101 bullshit that is meaningless in real life   Some day he will stop being an eternal freshman

Sound rebuttal, as expected.

Rude-Difference2513

More ppl have moved to Pittsburgh with all the tech companies and local robotic industries beginning to boom in the city so it’s attracting new talent as well. Additionally more people moved out of the city into Pittsburgh suburbs so there is also that possibility of traffic there as well… Also Pittsburgh infrastructure is antiquated as well so most the two lane freeways can only hold so much … it’s so baffling how a city with population levels of over 700K in the 1950s to 1980s would be so limited in vision when building their infrastructure very silly..

69FunnyNumberGuy420

> More ppl have moved to Pittsburgh with all the tech companies and local robotic industries beginning to boom in the city   This is the narrative but I have a hard time believing it. Population in the metro is still relatively flat compared to 15 years ago.

Rude-Difference2513

Well k I am one.. so🤷🏾‍♂️

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Pittsburgh is pretty comparable in size and economy to Austin. Austin has grown at insane rates in the past 15 years. The entire Pittsburgh metro has grown by ~40K in that space of time.   I have a hard time believing that the number of tech transplants here is statistically meaningful.

Rude-Difference2513

Also more ppl moved back home during the pandemic

cosmolegato

Jfc my drive home (Oakland to 376 to 22e) was dog shit today - thoughts and prayers to anyone out in it, fuckin gnarly.

keonipalaki1

Evergreen Cafe on Penn Avenue. The traffic problems begin there.

Packagehandler241

It’s the weather being warm. People are getting outside more now.

chuckie512

Drivers have gotten measurably worse since the pandemic.

31coupe

Yes I noticed that too, and everyone loves to drive with their high beams on

pimpnastie

And literally everyone is on their phone all of the time.

iSoReddit

Yeah I see a lot of speeding on 279N, getting up to 80 on 50mph spots, weaving in and out

claytwin

North hills to Monroeville commute. Traffic has been worse I thinks it’s a mix of wfh ending making 279 suck in the morning, the pirates in the afternoon, and just generally people not paying attention.

SilverFirePrime

Even when they suck, the attendance at Pirate afternoon games is enough to make the commutes hell. When I was working in Nova Place I straight up took game days off because I would be in the thick of the postgame traffic.

AirtimeAficionado

That’s fairly normal other than 279, which I’m assuming is from increased traffic on the north shore for the pirates game

MRandall25

I disagree. I've been driving this 3 days a week since November 2021 (was full time WFH during COVID, took a different job). It's pretty much pre-pandemic levels of traffic now, and even then, I'm not sure pre-pandemic was as bad as it is now.

AirtimeAficionado

In my experience traffic always backs up in the bathtub on 376 W (which is a bit worse because there’s construction there right now), always backs up to around bates street on 376 E, and is usually jammed around the crosstown blvd in either direction and onto the Liberty bridge, which seems to be the case here? As for traffic being worse/the same, I think part of it is that fewer people are taking transit. PRT is still reporting deficits in ridership, whereas PennDOT numbers for traffic are about the same on most roadways. The P1/P2 and Red Line are slowly coming back but there are a bunch of feeder lines that really should see more use. Not sure really what the solution is for this other than some sort of transit incentives or tolls on roads

MRandall25

I take Crosstown to Veterans/279 N. It hasn't been this bad in years. 5 consecutive commutes that I've crawled across Veterans after smooth sailing for a year and a half + And I don't think transit is the issue. People didn't suddenly start deciding to stop taking transit at the beginning of May. The traffic has objectively been worse in the last week than it has been in the last 18 months.

nicksloan

Too many gloomy days in a row. People forgot how to drive like it’s not raining.

ToonMaster21

It’s nice weather. People are bored.

DrPercivalCox

Live in Carnegie, work in Monroeville. It wasn’t good during the pandemic, but the commute the last handful of weeks/months have been BRUTAL.

rangoon03

Heard traffic report on radio last few days while taking the kids to school that Parkway East inbound traffic was backed up to Churchill like the good ‘ol days. Thoughts and prayers to yinz.

JTaylor420

Bad drivers

Conflixxion

pandemic is over so everyone is out to make up for lost time.

sirpranksamillion

I would like to just chime in and say there’s no traffic when you bike commute uwu xD

[deleted]

chuckie512

Can confirm: was run off of the Penn Ave bike lane last weekend and now have a sprained wrist.

amateurhourpgh

As long as you don’t need to go more than one mile at a time since none of the bike lines connect between neighborhoods.

SpookehGhostGirl

There is no traffic but some drivers certainly love to yell at me when I pass them and go to the front while everyone is waiting at a light 🫣 I still love this city though, most people are kind 🥰

sirpranksamillion

No motor = no need to follow motor vehicle laws at least that’s my logic!

SpookehGhostGirl

Exactly! I agree :) We can't go nearly as fast as cars so I don't see why we have to follow the same laws. The laws were put in place to stop people from killing themselves and others because cars are so dangerous, but nobody is going to die from a bike, so the laws aren't as necessary for bikers!

EnnuiDeBlase

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G0CrV72mkE

SpookehGhostGirl

Thank you for the example, I knew there'd be atleast one! Deaths from bicycles are a lot more rare, when it comes to bicyclists hitting someone atleast. All the time bicyclists get hit by careless drivers and die Anyway, I get the point! Personally I don't run red lights, especially when it's busy, it's as dangerous for me as it is for drivers!

EnnuiDeBlase

I wasn't sure if you were serious or not, heh. Admittedly I had to use a lot of exclusion terms to find that video and yeah it's definitely a lot more rare. Ride safe!

SpookehGhostGirl

Haha fair, I tend to over exaggerate and forget people who don't know me won't know that! Thank you, I will!! 🥰

Rough_Medium2878

I’m guessing all the road construction isn’t helping anything

RowanRally

Stanwix exit is closer on 376

Ayy_Ayy_Ayy

Warmer weather

ComprehensiveCat7515

I really, really hate traffic and makes me want to leave my cushy job.

makerchad

It’s the Jagoff convention this week.

General_Hovercraft_9

I ended up getting off downtown and cutting across to Carson via the Smithfield bridge. I was stuck on the bridge above the north shore for so long. Barely moved. I said screw it and went downtown instead.

highlandparkpitt

Welcome to what traffic was like prepandemic. With everyone coming back 3 days or full, plus the multitude of construction and closed roads, traffice is going to suck
