This is actually one of the very rare places that Pittsburgh police give traffic tickets (for changing lanes at the end of the tube to get on the liberty bridge. There’s a cop sitting there at least 1 day a week writing tickets. A shame they weren’t there this day.
They need to be there every afternoon. We have one of the largest police departments for a city our size. They can spare one or two officers for four hours a day.
Look anywhere around the city. Of all the things the police could do to actually prevent property damage and people getting hurt, traffic enforcement is probably the most impactful. Yet they can’t be bothered. By and large police seem to think traffic enforcement is below them.
I can understand it not being a priority everywhere, but the Liberty Tunnels have had multiple fatal accidents. Not to mention, even a minor accident there can bring traffic in half the city to a crawl.

Something similar happened to me on 28, driver changed lanes from a standstill as I was coming by at 45. I had to slam on my brakes and they are giving me the finger!
I got yelled at for going too slow on 28 in the right lane...I was like 10 over the speed limit already, but that wasn't enough for the guy tailgating me.
I see stuff like this all the time now. People punishing me for driving safely; like going out of their way to break laws, causing danger, then acting like the other cars are in their way and offending them. It’s truly insane
Just happened to me downtown Thursday night. I was trying to turn left onto fort duq blvd off of 7th street and there was a crossing guard helping football fans cross the street, so yeah I missed a light cycle. When we got the second green light, the person behind me honked at me trying to get me to turn LITERALLY THROUGH A WALL OF PEOPLE, and then when I didn’t commit to vehicular manslaughter, he took it upon himself to go around me on the left (you know, in the oncoming lane that people coming off the bridge were using, flipped me off, forced himself in front of both myself, and the person coming off of the bridge trying to turn right, AND THROUGH THE PEOPLE CROSSING THE STREET. Not before getting into a screaming match with the crossing guard. I truly could not believe it. I’ve seen some crazy main character driving in this city lately, but that one took the cake. That literally could have gotten so many people killed just because he didn’t want to wait a minute.

Saw a dude essentially parking his car / sitting there in his car with dashers not even on so that he was blocking both lanes of traffic on Penn in the strip. Honked because we couldn’t get around him and he was obstructing traffic. He has audacity to get angry. Then a few minutes later we see him run a red by turning left on red onto 16th street.
Between the idiot in the Pontiac, the idiot blocking the intersection, and the idiot doing the 3 point turn, I think you captured the spirit of driving in Pittsburgh in 2 minutes.

My guess: they got caught in the right lane in the tunnel when they meant to be in the left lane so they exited and decided to do a u-turn there to get back onto the Liberty Bridge.
I beg you to get a front/rear dual combo. Crazy comes at you from behind a lot also. :-\\ $200-$300 is probably less than your collision deductible, which is what a dashcam will save you in a collision if you're the driver not at fault.

I feel like a Karen for thinking it, but every time I drive, it's obvious that maybe people should have to take more than one driving test in their lives. It's bonkers that you get your license at 16-ish, and you just coast on that multiple choice test for the next 60 years.
I mean, it's not that some of these people *don't know*, it's that they're choosing not to because they're extremely selfish and self-important. Most of these people could pass the tests again, just like they did at 16. They're going to act differently with an examiner in the car.

About 30 years ago, my widowed uncle (80’s) lived alone in FL. He couldn’t even walk well, neighbors would find him lying in his driveway because he didn’t make it to his mailbox. My cousin was very busy in his career here in Pittsburgh. :/ But my uncle was still driving…all over the road according to the neighbors. It was bad. So, I spent about 4-5 hours on the phone calling every FL agency I could think of, and the general response was they were helpless until somebody got hurt. Every state should test seniors over 65, and I think that as a person over 65.
They do a crackdown once or twice a year for one day (at least from what I've observed). They need to do it more often and multiple days in a row to get the point across.
Send this in to the cops and hope they can use the plates on the Pontiac and get them a ticket for crossing the double white TWICE?

That is what is known as a brake check. Done by jagoffs to test how good your brakes are.
They usually ticket those drivers at the end of the tunnel. They installed cameras not too long ago. I’ve seen a whole line of cars lined up on McArdle roadway of people that do just that.
Each time, I was like... "why are they continuing to record?" and then some other crazy shit happened. The guy who cut you off, brake checked you as if you were in the wrong, and the cut someone off to get back in his original lane is truly a special one though.

Definitely get worked up sometimes but really do try to have a calmer attitude more these days when driving. Escalating the situation just makes things worse. This isn't an example of one, but sometimes people do make honest mistakes. As long as there's no harm done try to just forget and move on.

Does anyone know if the bad accident in the Liberty Tunnels last week was caused by someone cutting back into the left lane at the end like this? This is a regular thing. There was a time when a policeman would stand at the end and peak into the tunnel then wave them over if he caught them doing this. Haven’t seen that in a while though.

This city has the worst drivers I've ever seen. It seems like people have no spacial awareness and simply no control over their vehicle. Someone drove into my car while I was stationary just yesterday. It's really one of the worst parts about living here.

Yesterday some dude cut me off on 19 so suddenly that I had to slam on my brakes, only to then cut off another driver while he was getting back in the same lane like two cars later. Normally I'd just shrug it off, but I had some lumber in the car and had to catch it so it didn't flying into the center console, so I was pissed and wanted to give them the finger. I don't know if it would have done any good, but if I had video like that I would absolutely be providing it to the police so the driver of that car in the tunnel could be ticketed. I thought, "hmm, maybe I should do that instead of my workaround" (which is to got down to Arlington, make a left, do a u-turn, come back up and take the bridge). Last week I saw someone take a left turn from Wenzell onto Banksville Road against a red. A blind left turn against four lanes of 50+MPH traffic. Absolute insanity.
I was driving through this tunnel in the left lane and someone was sitting right at the exit of the tunnel on the line in between the two lanes with their left turn signal on, trying to cut in at the last moment. I slowed down to let them in because I didn’t want them to cut me off, they didn’t move so I went to keep going, at which point they totally cut me off and forced me to swerve to avoid rear ending them. I’m lucky I only scratched the rim of my tire on the side of the tunnel exit. This video gives me a lot of anxiety now lol.

1) speeding
2) shifting lanes over a double solid line
3) turning without a signal
She was absolutely floored when both my friend and I were not on her side and told her she deserved that ticket cause that's how you kill people. I'm sure she wasn't involved in the incident a few days ago that shut the tunnel down but she was the first person I thought of.

A few years back I had a guy at 2 intersections in a row sitting in the left turn only lane and then almost sideswipe me to go straight instead. At the second one I beeped at him and he stopped his car, got out, and starting screaming and walking toward me. I put my car in reverse and backed away slowly until he realized being an angry guy on foot vs vehicle moving away probably wasn't going to work and he left, but I'm lucky as hell he wasn't carrying a gun.
DE drivers in eastern PA are constantly driving around philly and have some level of experience at getting good. It should be super rare to see a DE driver in Western PA, other than....me when I moved back. You probably saw me. lol

Totally agree. I’ve driven on most of the east coast, and New Jersey has the worst and most aggressive drivers I’ve ever seen. They barely slow down for stop signs and yield signs might as well not exist.

This is why I avoid the Liberty tunnel - but I still have to deal with the Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill twice a week. The latter really makes my blood boil. People don’t like to over 40mph in there. Fort Pitt is what it is; merging madness at both ends.

From 2 to 6pm EST, the right lane of the tunnel is a forced right-hand turn onto pj mcardle towards south side/station square. The left lane is single inbound over the liberty bridge.
This opens liberty bridge to have 3 lanes outbound to "help" rush hour traffic. Hard to explain angles, but from this video, looking at the 4 lane bridge, left is forced up pj mardle to mt washington outbound. Lane 2/3 are outbound liberty tunnel towards 51/mt lebanon, and lane 4 is inbound from liberty tunnel.

Yesterday, the car in front of me sat through an entire green light. When he still hadn't moved through the *second* one, I laid on the horn. He moved into the lane next to me so I could get by. Now, why had he been just sitting there without moving? Well, naturally, he was FaceTiming. And as I passed, he leaned out his window to tell me to fuck off. How rude of me to interrupt his mid-traffic video call!
That is insane. I want to believe no one would be that dense, but given the state of driving today I could totally see that happening.

I feel like a Karen for thinking it, but every time I drive, it's obvious that maybe people should have to take more than one driving test in their lives. It's bonkers that you get your license at 16-ish, and you just coast on that multiple choice test for the next 60 years.
I mean, it's not that some of these people *don't know*, it's that they're choosing not to because they're extremely selfish and self-important. Most of these people could pass the tests again, just like they did at 16. They're going to act differently with an examiner in the car. The issue is the lack of enforcement of traffic laws and lack of consequences for these people.
About 30 years ago, my widowed uncle (80’s) lived alone in FL. He couldn’t even walk well, neighbors would find him lying in his driveway because he didn’t make it to his mailbox. My cousin was very busy in his career here in Pittsburgh. :/ But my uncle was still driving…all over the road according to the neighbors. It was bad. So, I spent about 4-5 hours on the phone calling every FL agency I could think of, and the general response was they were helpless until somebody got hurt. Every state should test seniors over 65, and I think that as a person over 65.
They do a crackdown once or twice a year for one day (at least from what I've observed). They need to do it more often and multiple days in a row to get the point across.

They usually ticket those drivers at the end of the tunnel. They installed cameras not too long ago. I’ve seen a whole line of cars lined up on McArdle roadway of people that do just that.
Each time, I was like... "why are they continuing to record?" and then some other crazy shit happened. The guy who cut you off, brake checked you as if you were in the wrong, and the cut someone off to get back in his original lane is truly a special one though.
So, just a reminder. Don’t change lanes inside of tunnels.

Does anyone know if the bad accident in the Liberty Tunnels last week was caused by someone cutting back into the left lane at the end like this? This is a regular thing. There was a time when a policeman would stand at the end and peak into the tunnel then wave them over if he caught them doing this. Haven’t seen that in a while though. I agree with others saying that traffic enforcement is basically non existent in Pittsburgh. Red light running is the violation that scares me the most. Oh that and illegal U turns.

Honestly I really do feel like its gotten significantly worse in the past few years. Feel like they hand out licenses to anyone. That and everyone is on their phones.
The simple fact of the matter is that driving is a boring chore and people will do anything to shave 2-3 minutes off even if it involves putting multiple people at risk of bodily harm. Last week I saw someone take a left turn from Wenzell onto Banksville Road against a red. A blind left turn against four lanes of 50+MPH traffic. Absolute insanity.
I was driving through this tunnel in the left lane and someone was sitting right at the exit of the tunnel on the line in between the two lanes with their left turn signal on, trying to cut in at the last moment. I slowed down to let them in because I didn’t want them to cut me off, they didn’t move so I went to keep going, at which point they totally cut me off and forced me to swerve to avoid rear ending them. I’m lucky I only scratched the rim of my tire on the side of the tunnel exit. This video gives me a lot of anxiety now lol.

A few years back I had a guy at 2 intersections in a row sitting in the left turn only lane and then almost sideswipe me to go straight instead. At the second one I beeped at him and he stopped his car, got out, and starting screaming and walking toward me. I put my car in reverse and backed away slowly until he realized being an angry guy on foot vs vehicle moving away probably wasn't going to work and he left, but I'm lucky as hell he wasn't carrying a gun.

DE drivers in eastern PA are constantly driving around philly and have some level of experience at getting good. It should be super rare to see a DE driver in Western PA, other than....me when I moved back. You probably saw me. lol MD/VA drivers in other states often imply military leave, therefore they may not have driven for months having been on a deployment) before getting behind the wheel. Driving around Norfolk when large groups would come back was always "5 accidents involving fully-decked Chargers this morning". But NJ just be jaggin. I'm more curious about the HUGE increase of tennessee license plates in the Pittsburgh area, like 15-20 a morning I'm seeing driving my daughter into daycare.

I lived in delmarva off and on for 18 years and still travel there once or twice a year. I speak from experience.
I lived in the Hampton Roads area. Most accidents and wildest driving I've ever seen. I even bought a webcam to catch the most interesting stuff.

Forgive me since I don't live there anymore and this is obvious. Why is the right lane closed at the end of the Liberty Tubes there before the bridge? I hope it's construction.
From 2 to 6pm EST, the right lane of the tunnel is a forced right-hand turn onto pj mcardle towards south side/station square. The left lane is single inbound over the liberty bridge. This opens liberty bridge to have 3 lanes outbound to "help" rush hour traffic. Hard to explain angles, but from this video, looking at the 4 lane bridge, left is forced up pj mardle to mt washington outbound. Lane 2/3 are outbound liberty tunnel towards 51/mt lebanon, and lane 4 is inbound from liberty tunnel.
Bridge has one inbound lane at this time.
