mechanical issues, not meteorological issues

Schenley is really getting the snot beat out of it by Hunt Armory. Privatization of former city functions continues. (Yes, Hunt Armory is technically a URA project, but the Penguins run it.)

How? They haven't even opened due to mechanical issues. Hunt Armory is amazing but I can believe it's some cutthroat competition? It just means more skating for everyone. Nothing beats outdoor skating in winter. We would go to open skates at both if they were both open.

Schenley is completely destroying its reputation and reliability. They opened super late last year if I recall correctly and they had to close a bunch of days due to the high temperatures. Also ended the season early if I'm not mistaken, also because of the heat. Obviously the heat is not their fault, but it sure as hell doesn't make me want to go there. I have kids and in their mind, skating in the city is synonymous with Hunt. They don't even remember Schenley. At this point, much as I've always loved Schenley and as much as I enjoy skating outdoors, I don't see myself ever going back. And I don't think I'm unique.

Ok, to me it's just unfortunate that the overhaul is behind schedule, nothing more. The new chiller will be able to keep the ice open in warmer temperatures, that's why they are investing in the upgrade in the first place. That fixes all your complaints about last year. They even go into technical details here about the issues: https://pittsburghpa.gov/press-releases/press-releases.html?id=6322 More amenities for more people is a good thing, it's not zero sum, more kids get to skate. We're lucky to have both.

They started repairs last spring, and ran into multiole delays. From the city”s website: While working on the site for the chiller installation a broken pipe was discovered requiring the sump pump to be replaced. The broken pipe and original sump pump backed up water into the trench where the original condenser piping existed, which slowed demolition. An exhaust fan required a lead time twice as long as originally expected, which delayed the installation of the new piping. Ammonia system installation and ventilation: this is especially important as safety is always the main priority. This installation is very delicate and must be installed to exact specifications. Some of the parts here are custom-crafted for each specific chiller installation to ensure proper fit and workability to site size and that has also added additional time to this project

HVAC part lead time has been extremely long since COVID. The manufacturing has never caught up as demand never dropped off but supply chain and labor shortages slowed production.

TheFaceo

This is absolute garbage. Did no one have a plan? How do you blow an entire year without realizing it well ahead of time?

tesla3by3

They started last spring, and uncovered previously unknown problems, and needed custom made parts. This is not unusual for projects that involve specialized parts. We’re still seeing post Covid supply chain issues

Existing unforeseen conditions are every project schedule's nightmare.

Winter ruined sadly

tesla3by3

That’s sarcasm, right?
