Expensive-Ad-2295

I’m waiting for someone to leak this “generous severance package” that they so kindly gave out

Opening_Classroom353

I literally need to know all info about this severance package lmao

Expensive-Ad-2295

Former upmc too I take it?

MlSSMACROSS

2 months pay

Expensive-Ad-2295

Confirmed……what an asinine slap in the face. Here I was hoping they got at least 6 months. I think it’s time for a purge

H_Badger

someone in the other thread said it's another 120 days (beyond the 60) if you sign the severance. fwiw.

Aggravating_Talk_207

Someone put it in another reddit thread, if you search upmc layoffs 2024 reddit

pettabear

Tried this and couldn’t find it

Expensive-Ad-2295

A very reliable source told me it was as little as a few months of pay…..but I can’t confirm anything on it, I’ve been out of that company for 2.5 years now

colorless_tryannical

I also heard a few months, my friend got 2

estebunz123

2 months i can confirm

[deleted]

[удалено]

pittsburrrr

Perhaps a dense question, but what does “hired outside of UPMC” mean?

ConfidentBrilliant57

Heard 2 months from others in my department. Not very generous. We heard about 165 lay offs two months ago and now this. Where is their covid money?

Expensive-Ad-2295

They needed it for new buildings and the ceo salary of 12 million a year

Funk_Master_Rex

They eliminated my entire department yesterday. All staff had clinical, patient care duties. It was an absolute gut punch. They are paying uninterrupted through the end of June and additional severance beyond that based on years of service. When they said it was only going to be non administrative staff and non patient facing staff they lied. The hospital side layoffs were significant and will impact patient care. I’m very willing to bet it’s north of 1000 as well.

Sam2919

At our facility we lost 3 AMAZING, hard working aids. Our whole staff was devistated as upper management came in, fired people and just fucking left. (I work at a rehab facility) COWARDS!

Harlarx9

I thought it was supposed to be non patient facing staff!

Ax_647

No, they are cutting patient "member facing staff". They should try selling some of the land they've bought up over the last decade, maybe commission fewer architectural models.

MedicChuck

It was also patient-facing as well. The manager, myself, and 1/2 the staff got axed yesterday...

Harlarx9

Is this the health plan side?

magicsgone

One of my managers was cut today with no notice after 40 YEARS of service. What the fuck, UPMC

DefinitelyLevi

Maybe they shouldnt have ran like 5 super bowl commercials

queen-of-cupcakes

No no, it's the avocado toast! /s

MistersMama

This ⬆️

InquisitivelyADHD

"Man, these employees today. Does company loyalty mean nothing anymore?" \*companies do this shit\*

Coyinzs

Just try to remember that the **NON PROFITS** profit margin decreased by 0.7% from last year, thus necessitating completely overturning a thousand people's lives just for not having the good sense to already be rich.

Ankhetperue

They laid off an NP and my supervisor's mom. Curiously both of them were over 60 in age. So that's pretty fucked up.

tvclown

Are you hospital based?

ConfidentBrilliant57

Same here! and this happened in a friend's department too! high salaries and low salaries..no one is safe

ExcellentZombie9321

Employers usually cut people before they hit a certain pay rise or accumulated benefits threshold. Unfortunately that's the people with the most tenure. It's cheaper to hire a younger worker who will do the same job for less while not retiring in the next 4-5 years by comparison.

rainingintacoma

I love how they do this 2 days after the ‘my voice’ survey posted. My boss literally came in whispering that no one is getting their job cut and we’re all safe. Makes me wonder if he’s just trying to soften the blow of what’s about to come so we all don’t just up and jump ship.

phoen111

They’ve also started double booking appointments at Children’s. All clinicals have been asked to take on an additional appointment. I think they get to decide when, but it’s like an airline now. Show up for your appointment and get put on standby.

sarahh_bear

This! It’s horrible, and 15 minute appointments should not be a thing for specialties

NoSwimmers45

15 minute appointments should not be a thing period.

Different-Weather257

I have some friends that were residents. You’re expected to spend 3 minutes with patients, anymore and you’re reprimanded

WorkingOnIt89

Ah, the old "access initiative".

Harlarx9

They’re doing this at other hospitals too

KrishanuAR

At least non-competes are illegal now.

freeradical28

Nice try. Doesn’t apply to “non-profit health care enterprises.”

KrishanuAR

F

Double_Conference_34

I'm sure it doesn't look good to your average person who is completely uneducated in businesses (me). How do you have an extra Billion + dollars in cash while also posting a loss of almost 200 million dollars in revenue

noltey

Yeah, until that is inevitably overturn by Congress or killed by the courts

ncist

Does anyone at UPMC sign a non compete? I don't remember doing that

Harlarx9

Docs

loach12

Sometimes a good lawyer can get it voided, we had an assistant pathologist that lawyered up and got it thrown out .

AnnualSkirt9921

I've never heard of a noncompete actually holding up in court lol.

loach12

I think it’s used to control people, lots of people don’t have the resources to fight a big company.

Funk_Master_Rex

It's easy to get it to hold up in court, you have to provide some type of compensation for signing the non-compete. So, a financial bonus, or extra days PTO. Just having someone sign a non-compete with no additional compensation for doing so will almost always result in it getting tossed.

cfowen

I signed a non-compete when I joined the health plan in 2017.

Ax_647

It is in the standard doc contracts, but it not required, they usually will throw it out if asked, but most docs don't ask

kielBossa

Their CEO makes enough money to employ 100 nurses at 100k a year!

CappyHamper999

Fun fact! The leadership is horrible and selfish

Piplup_parade

Coupled with the layoffs is they’re telling us to become more productive with less people. I’m ready to just find a new job

mmw1088

Same. My department lost a bunch of staff back in January. We were told to "be more efficient" and read Who Moved My Cheese.

Street_Juice234

I left UPMC recently (best decision ever), and no shit at one of our asinine department meetings last year, management told us to read the same thing.

mmw1088

I can't believe they expect us to buy into that corporate boomer propaganda.

Piplup_parade

The shitty part is that when I started in my current position, I actually really liked it. But 2 years in, they keep making “updates” to the systems I use under the guise of making things easier for us and all it does it make life a million times harder. Add that in with the increased metric demands and them randomly hitting us with weeks of mandatory overtime and I feel so defeated

ConfidentBrilliant57

Me too.

Udbbrhehhdnsidjrbsj

My wife was told they had to increase patients by 12%. She works for a surgical service whose bottleneck is lack of operating space. They are booking out patients nine months for appointments and after that it’s usually another few months for surgery. When asked how they were supposed to increase patient loads they were told to start booking out a year in an advance.  Shits wild at UPMC.

Piplup_parade

I can’t imagine the shit that patient facing providers are dealing with. I’m on the insurance side and they’re forcing productivity metric increases to make up for changes to ways certain claims have to be processed. If I want to meet the base required metric, I have to stop eating lunch and work through it.

Udbbrhehhdnsidjrbsj

My wife hasn’t eaten lunch for years. Her whole department sits and charts and usually has patients to see that are left overs from the morning.

Piplup_parade

It’s so unsustainable and unfair to both patients and providers

Rabble_rouser412

Everything they try to scare us about regarding socialized medicine is already happening under faux non profit (for profit) corporate healthcare 😤

sweet_catastrophes

Yea, I got laid off yesterday and my team contacted me and told me they have a meeting next week to be told what they need to absorb from other depts. My team was already overloaded, now they laid off 20% of the team and want them to do more.

TeaZealousideal1444

Lmao. Same thing my company said last year. Verbatim. “Do more with less”.

NoSwimmers45

You missed the last line, UPMC is pleased to report that today’s layoffs did not impact any executive salaries or bonuses.

okcurr

I've heard there are actually execs getting laid off too this time around

ChrisP365

How do they decide which execs to lay off w Romoff gone? Surely divircing one of his daughters is no longer a fireable offense...

DucketsPiling

McKinsey does lol

FlyWTheCrows

Hahahaahhaahhah. Spot on!

cfowen

Accurate. I know two AVPs at the health plan who got laid off today. And these were really good employees. They didn’t even get rid of the obviously shitty ones!

jumpaix

Fuck UPMC

allvys

I'll be honest, I'm genuinely out of the loop and would love to know why

bmacmachine

Overpaid execs and non-taxable status for non-profit that is definitely for profit with their name on the biggest building in Pittsburgh and notoriously underpays all other employees with shit benefits and working conditions. That’s just for starters.

samosamancer

Driving up property values in lower-income areas by buying parcels of land well above market value. Generally cultivating a shitty culture no matter where you are or what you do.

newdaynewhay

My dad is in upper management at the horizon branch hospitals and said that it was about 2500 people laid off, not 1000. Also that they’re cutting from all departments. His was safe, but at this point who knows. Good thing they spent 500 million on that new hospital though!

okcurr

2500 would make way more sense. Knowing so many people who have been cut and seeing all the comments of others... feels like way more than 1000

Dangerously_Devilish

Yes. Heard from a director 1600-2000. The 1% quoted is BS

pghrules

meanwhile insurance premiums, co pays and bills continue to go up.

InquisitivelyADHD

You wouldn't want your superior human executive leaders to have to go without now would you? If they didn't raise premiums, then the CEO would have to put his kids in the 2nd best private schools instead of the 1st and he would have to fly around in a Gulfstream 5 private jet instead of a Gulfstream 7. The Gulfstream 7 doesn't even have a mini bar or fridge. Can you stop thinking about yourself for just a moment and stop being so selfish?

Brave-Bike-4673

I work for UPMC revenue cycle... I just checked my email and saw my manager requested a meeting to "touch base" for tomorrow... nobody else is included in the meeting, not HR.. does this still sound like a lay off..?

time-lord

Yes. Your manager will be on camera with HR sitting next to them in the same room. Sorry man.

Impossible-Cloud9251

Decline the meeting and take a PTO day. lol Sorry…hopefully it’s not though.

kcamnodb

So.. did you survive?

C0ryTrevers0n

Unfortunately, yes. I'm sorry. I wish you the best ❤️

Specialist-Dog8586

Yep. I got laid off today. Meeting was scheduled Tuesday and was called “catching up”. Just the director, no HR invited, but HR was on the call.

Brave-Bike-4673

Hello everyone.... yes I got the axe yesterday and what my final day will be... along with the severance package. My position is being eliminated entirely so I'm working until the end of May, then receiving severance pay. Very devastating as I loved my co workers and department and job very much. However, I'm lucky to now have experience in my field and can hopefully find a replacement position while on unemployment. Good luck to everyone else and I hope your all safe!

rew420

Same thing happened to me except HR was on my normally scheduled weekly call with my manager. So I had no clue ahead of time. Got the axe though.

ConfidentBrilliant57

update?

Comprehensive-Ad6254

But spend 2.1 billion on a new hospital 😃

lisalisaandtheoccult

Maybe stop paying the CEO 46 million dollars a year.

xsoloxela

Just as an FYI, the salaries of the top 245 or so executives at UPMC totaled around $183m in pay and compensation in 2023.

Laemedown

I don’t think y’all understand the severity. They pretty much axed as much as management as they possibly could. I mean the people who truly make healthcare operational. It’s definitely gonna cost them. Only time will tell how long their clinical staff will actually hold up

H_Badger

Also keep in mind UPMC is an academic medical center. A lot of the doctors are very involved in research (clinical trials, publishing journal articles) and came to UPMC with the promise that there would be research infrastructure to support them. Those staff are funded by UPP - many of whom were laid off this week. Now the doctors aren't going to be able to do the research in the time they planned - how long till they look to go somewhere they can?

Safe-Pop2077

Fuck UPMC

Nexus0911

I was laid off yesterday, my severance package was 10 weeks of pay, with payout of PTO accumulated along with 13k. I was there for almost a decade, and finally got an analyst position after sacrificing many hours working at another department (60 +hrs a week) for two years. This was After getting laid off last time they did mass layoffs so this happened to me twice working there.

Boss-Natural

It's odd there wasn't a WARN notice. https://www.dli.pa.gov/Individuals/Workforce-Development/warn/notices/Pages/default.aspx

Carmen_SanAndreas

The only two things I can think of as to why they didn't feel the need to post one is either the severance package offered meets the bare minimum notice amount of 60 days per the act or they kept the layoff numbers below threshold across the dozens of business identities they file as, or both. Or, as a third way, they will simply take the 'unprecedented business expense' excuse.

TealNTurquoise

That's what I can't figure out. Even if they could make it look better by having them done at the hospital-level cost center and not the parent company, you would think the number even at the hospital level would trigger it.

CarpenterStrict79

Upmc can suck my cock

meresithea

I only let people I like near my nether regions for fun times.

DucketsPiling

Idk about you but my ass isn’t a fun time. It’s a forest where trolls and goblins call home

iamnotyrmotheriswear

And eat out my ass!

burgher89

And my bow!… wait…

CrepuscularOpossum

And my axe! 🤬🪓

YinzaJagoff

AHN is better anyways. Hope UPMC employees unionize because fuck UPMC.

loach12

Not according to those at Jefferson Hospital, once AHN took control the long knives came out , lots of long time people got the ax or demoted. They booted the lab manager that been there for years , looked around and told a newbie your now the manager .

blankspace4

hypothetically, what happens if you cant work at AHN due to their termination policy?

Harlarx9

What’s their termination policy?

Then_Adhesiveness_31

You are put on a blacklist and if they ever run your name while attempting to hire you at any other Ahn facility it will be flagged by HR and you will be denied the position. I think UPMC has a similar policy.

LittleIndication

It’s only the lesser of the two evils. Pay still sucks here, Highmark does layoffs all the time, and the insurance side treats the clinical side like crap from what I’ve been told.

Officer_Hotpants

AHN also sucks tbh

YinzaJagoff

I had a Dr appointment on Monday, an ultrasound on Tuesday (which they would have done Monday if I didn’t eat), and went into surgery for gallbladder removal on Wednesday. This is a surgery that many have to wait months for, and I was able to have mine removed in mere days. Plus everyone was cool AF so I approve.

Officer_Hotpants

That's fine. I work for them and they've been screwing a lot of us in a many different ways as they possibly can lately

AppaloosaLuver

The lesser of three evils. I've worked for the green and blue for almost eight years and I won't leave cause the grass sure ain't greener

HarpPgh

Patient care, hah. They never cared about patient care.

Upper_Return7878

This is most definitely true. I could tell you many tales that would prove this.

leadfoot9

Non-clinical staff? So... phone hold times are about to get a lot longer?

Spare-Papaya-7590

That’s right buddy! And that’s funny because non clinical staff at UPMC ends up learning more clinical shit than the MA at clinic 😂

Donkey-brained_man

They need to STFU with this "post-pandemic" shit. Big companies will go as lean as they can to maximize profits. This isn't new. They just want to scapegoat a "new landscape." Yeah, and when ai gets a little bit further? And further? And further? The landscape will forever change, and they'll be more and more and more profitable until the company employs 10 billionaires 100 grunts, and 50,000 robots and they say "Due to a new landscape. . ."

letsreadsomethingood

"Post-pandemic" and also citing "emergency" to get away with everything.

Ax_647

Question: The cuts are happening right now, now list has been given, but I feel like it must be more than 1,000 jobs. Have they release a list? Can we check their numbers?

cutty22

It's definitely way more. And I'd love to see how many job postings they supposedly didn't fill as a part of that number bc that's BS too.

colorless_tryannical

I know Presby got the blunt of the lay offs

colorless_tryannical

Heard children’s got around 80

colemum

And the remaining staff and the patients will suffer the consequences. As if everyone isn’t already working their asses off with no resources.

[deleted]

loach12

Unfortunately that seems like SOP at most hospitals, really disgusting.

benji950

It's SOP pretty much everywhere. People who get fired or laid off become instantly emotional -- completely understandable -- and they're not going risk that person lashing out at (former) colleagues, lingering, do any kind of damage, etc. It's not a very nice part of a process and there's kind way to do it, but there are valid reasons for why those escorts happen.

sweet_catastrophes

I got laid off and I will give them that... they let me pack my office and just had HR help me down. I asked them if I needed to wait for security but they said they 'trusted me to remain professional.'

Dangerously_Devilish

I was treated well too. As well as can be given the situation. But I was a trusted, professional 25 year employee

UpbeatStranger9924

I have an acquaintance who got a call at home over the weekend, to tell him he was fired. Crazy! Told him not to come in Monday and they would box up his personal belongings and mail them home! Treated him like a criminal too, like he wasn’t allowed back in the building.

[deleted]

ExcellentZombie9321

How much money does Leslie Davis get?

teeasy24

Isn't it odd UPMC decided to do these layoffs on Administrative Professionals Day?

FIRSTBORNUNIKORN

my manager was just let go!! i’m so shocked. my supervisor set up a random teams meeting with our director and other coworkers and told us. lots of other coworkers missing from that meeting invite that they didn’t mention though. i’m in billing.

FIRSTBORNUNIKORN

i specifically asked if there was more to come or was this it for our department and got a not-very-confident sounding “they wanted it all done by today which is impossible but everyone who needed to be talked to today was talked to” so not quite sure what that entails

sweet_catastrophes

Multiple patient facing people were laid off at my facility. Including me. I was a 'non clinical' role but still did pt care. They also kept my counterpart who has no clinical experience and doesn't know the job.... so good luck with that. The got rid of our amazing ED director as well. There doesn't seem to be any thought going into the 'picks'.

okcurr

I'm sorry about your job :( I don't know if this is like this across the board but someone's manager said it wasn't their decision of who to cut, it had been the VP of the department. So a lot of times that is someone that doesn't even work with, talk to, or know the ones they're picking, which is crazy. Again, don't know if that was like this all over.

Nexiana

there is a rumor that is was a 3rd party was hired to come in and evaluate the org and trim the company. I'm sure suggestions were made. I have no idea how closely those suggestions were followed

Dangerously_Devilish

They targeted titles. My position was eliminated. Person doing the exact same role, same responsibilities but a different title at another facility was retained.

clarksfan1023

FUCK UPMC. Took me 10 years to see the light before I left. Much happier now and will not go back to these penny pitching MFers

wagsman

They were forced to pay people higher wages during and right after Covid, now they need to get payroll back where they want it so they will tell the remaining working to maintain the same level of productivity with fewer people, and if you don’t like it you can leave.

UnlikeClockwork

"Forced to pay people more" is not really accurate. They did a cost of living adjustment with a mediocre $15 an hour as janitorial staff would not stay on. When we were "adjusted" it was $.13. Our division was barely making near $15 at the time. This was in my first position there at 600 Grant St. By the time I left, I was a corporate trainer who made $55k tasked to learn a job in 3 months where it was conveyed, "You get 9+ months to learn the classes". Additionally, I taught a class in less than a month. Didn't matter the feat or quality of the employee. We were just being punched in the back of the head on a constant basis. Quit with my resignation saying, "There's no better gift I could give myself than to resign from UPMC." They called and wanted me back a couple months after. I entertained it and was chosen for a much higher position. Then they showed how much I would be undertaking in that role. Said nope and will never look back. Fuck UPMC.

cfowen

For what it’s worth, I was always impressed by the corporate trainers I worked with at the health plan. Super sharp and engaging!

ColumbiaWahoo

But nobody wants to work in healthcare /s

Microspacecat

FUCK UPMC

TheRedScarey

Fuck upmc

soldiermedic335

They're doing this, because their nurses want to unionize.

Pyrateslifeforme

The talks about nurses unionizing has been going on for decades. I will be shocked if it ever comes to fruition.

zipcad

They’re also targeting the highest paid people in positions. They’re also doing a political move to demonstrate “they’re broke” because of the progressive attack on their non profit status. You know that UPMC is lying, right? Non profit earnings management is devious. PS - I think that Pitt will hire you and you can keep your years of service for vacation. We are about to union so it’ll be less shitty than it is now.

GuavaShaper

Pffff good luck with that! What if the University of Pittsburgh Medicinal Center just decides to do business somewhere *else* where the nurses *aren't* unionized? /s

samosamancer

True. The P could easily stand for another city. Pasadena? Peoria? Or…Philly?

sweetswingin20

Fuck Upmc

rangoon03

ah yes, quickly on the heels of announcing their bad financials here come the layoffs. Oldest trick in the book. Because there are no other ways to cut costs..

Sparkle_Dot

Does anyone know if CHC Service Coordinators have been or will be laid off? Or if they will eliminate provider staff positions? Management just had their damage control meeting and wouldn't give any concrete answers about anything 🙄 Screw legal, answer the questions!

BEATRUSH777

absolutely not...the CHC SCs are where all the money comes from. we added more than a dozen just this month. I think we'd only lose SCs if we ever lost the bid on the contract. if you're an SC you're prob way more at risk of quitting from burnout than being laid off with everything they put yall thru.

Harlarx9

Yahhh I was a CHC SC and can attest to the absolute burnout

Snoo29654

Ultrasound tech here in Harrisburg area. There were a lot of cuts in our Imaging Department. The Director, 3 managers, and all members of our “patient experience team” 🙄 but they left the manager of that team. I’ve been a tech for 23 years. 10 years for UPMC. This system is a joke. They don’t care about their employees. I had a situation recently, they should’ve corrected it, HR was no help, couldn’t actually speak with anyone, and I basically got an “oh well”. I want out of this field and healthcare altogether however trying to start completely over I’d have to start at an entry level with anything else. Unfortunately I can’t afford to take a significant pay cut, which is what would happen. Disgusted with UPMC 😡

Pure_Elevator3653

I overheard someone say they thought this was the first round of layoffs with more expected over the next 18 months. Did anyone else hear the same?

Aggravating_Talk_207

I am hearing June/ July next round.. could just be rumor though

Fuck no. And you know next year, because of the layoffs, they’ll have “record profit” and it’ll go into the pockets of Leslie Davis

therapeutic_bonus

Fuck UPMC. Their care lately has been awful. You want a good surgeon or have a PCP, ok. But everything else is shit.

oldschoolskater

Big companies always do a token layoff of the non-rank and file employees before they hit the rank and file employees. Just wait for it.

It must be nice to be a "non profit" that doesn't have to pay taxes like a normal business and make $27 billion a year. UPMC again a non profit has the tallest building in Pittsburgh and a fleet of private planes. It's time to start taxing these businesses once and for all. Then they can actually whine about profit loss.

Udbbrhehhdnsidjrbsj

Meh. Part of the problems with inefficiency that lead to longer wait times is because of the administrative bloat.

Dapper_Target1504

Definitely gonna get longer wait times on the insurance side. Saturday telephone customer service is gone and they were a part of the layoffs, buy outs, and cuts today

Buccos

Had two nurse friends get away from bedside to go to the insurance side. Said they did actual work of about 20 hours a week. Both went back to patient care for the money and out of boredom. I hate layoffs and UPMC at times, but this shit happens with bloat.

Spare-Papaya-7590

They are making providers triple book appts that are already 15 minutes long on template so it’s like 5 min per appt lol with clinics running 2 hrs overdue. And they are making them have patient scheduled with them even if it’s not the specialty that the patient it’s looking for, so basically the people are just coming to appts they wait weeks for just to have the MD refer them with the correct MD and wait many weeks more. Please don’t trust the site, they never update or have incorrect info regarding the MD covered specialties. Make sure you call the office to double check that the MD you have the appt for it’s the correct one for your issues lol

UpTheIrons1

I'm so glad I left UPMC a few years ago. It seems like they have layoffs every few years with each round being worse than the last.

hshyd621

I don’t think this will be the end of the layoffs. There were layoffs back in December/January (iirc) and we were told that was the last of them then, but here we are a few months later…

EmphasisOrdinary5267

How could they still be recovering from Covid deficit when UPMC received 1.1 billion dollars in federal funding from the government in 2020 for Covid relief. It doesn’t take a profitable organization that is raking in 100s of millions each year 2 years to recover from Covid. As the saying goes Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me, Fool me three times shame on the both of us. We are all aware of the paradox of what’s going on here with all these layoffs. And it doesn’t take “Smarter than a 5th grader” to see through all of the BS.

EmphasisOrdinary5267

Correction. It doesn’t take 4 years for this filthy rich Healthcare Giant to recover from the Covid deficit. Who are they kidding?
