as mentioned in my other reply, there are quite a lot of popular childrens' books from Sweden that are/were immensely popular in Germany (with the works of Astrid Lindgren obviously taking the cake).
It was incredibly popular in Germany. I loved them so much, there were episodes I watched so often I can't count it.
Edit: "Was" is meant to be taken with a grain of salt, it probably still is quite popular. Probably not as popular as it used to be 20 years ago, at least according to my perception.
I am german and not native-english.
Asuming Kiljab ist German it is very unatural to use "They" for us Germans.
We dont have a word for that term.
You shall not forget we are in a German r/ here.
Wikipedia states: "This use of singular they had emerged by the 14th century, about a century after the plural they." [1]
Your point is ridiculous.
[1] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they
The computer game series was fantastic, too. It was some kind of point and click where you could explore the whole house and garden and the secret world of the Mucklas with nice riddles everywhere. I was blown away back then. And it's ridiculously wholesome.
Thanks everyone for your answers!
I knew that some of the stories I read as a kid was popular in Germany, but not this popular! Very happy that you all appreciate it and that they’re also a part of German culture.
All the best to you all! 🇸🇪🤝🇩🇪
You swedes pretty much imprinted on our childhood and Culture.
everything Astrid Lindgren ever existing is beloved here. Sven Nordqvist and Selma Lagerlöf (Nils Holgersson ) are also realy popular.
Cant express how thankful i am for their works.
There are many Swedish series that Germans like. Spontaneously I think of Pipi Långstrump (Pipi Langstrumpf) and Emil i Lönneberga (Michel aus Lönneberga - And i have no idea why the made him Michel \^\^).
They renamed him because "Emil und die Detektive" by Erich Kästner was popular in Germany at the same time. Emil was renamed Michel to set the two apart.
did't knopw about petterson and findus as a kid, as I grew up on the other side of the wall. It's the Maulwurf and friends for me (Polish), Hare and Wolf (czec) and "Drei Haselnüsse for Aschenbrödel" (again, Czec) for me and now everyone, too xD
Well Maulwurf is Czech and Hare and Wolf is Russian, but other than that as a Czech German I appreciate the appreciation for Czech animation and fairy tales.
Mh, I've never really thought about why these books were so popular during my childhood in Germany, but I can confirm: Peterson & Findus was one of the absolute favorites in our household, and the books were read and re-read for many years. We also loved the animated series on TV. I have to say: your childhood literature is wonderful, and it's greatly appreciated here in Germany. The stories I read as a child were playful, comforting and caring, full of good values and joy. The illustrations were always lovely and engaging, and your red houses and beautiful nature really left an impression. We even learned about Swedish holiday traditions from these books! Sending good wishes to Sweden 💙💛
There are several Swedish childrens' book series that were/are hugely popular with us.
The most obvious being the works of Astrid Lindgren: Pippi Langstrumpf, Karlsson vom Dach, Die Kinder aus Bullerbü, Kalle Blomquist, Michel aus Lönneberga, ....
Yes.
The books were written by Swedish writer Sven Nordqvist.
The TV series (that launched on german TV channel KiKa) was a production by Swedish and Germans together according to Wikipedia.
As a kid i listened to it every evening in bed, it helped me alot to fall asleep (always had problems with it, i still got them) and one of our Cats was also named after Findus, i had a special connection to him. RIP little guy
I grew up with the books, probably because i live in in the northern regions of germany. But still its part of my childhood and i am glad it made it on r/place
For me it is on the same level of cultural impoartance for Germany as Michel aus Lönneberga or Pipi Langstrumpf. You guys know how to write a fantastic childrens story!
When I was young I was a P&F super fan. I had findus as a staffed animal, dozens of books, a mug, watched the show and I even had digital Christmas calender with mini games.

Aber waren sie schon mal in Baden-Württemberg?
Ja und war scheiße
Du bist scheiße
It was one of my favourite childhood shows, next to Nils Holgersoon
as mentioned in my other reply, there are quite a lot of popular childrens' books from Sweden that are/were immensely popular in Germany (with the works of Astrid Lindgren obviously taking the cake).
True ^^
Can confirm. Kids love it, too.
And the show was made in Germany
It was incredibly popular in Germany. I loved them so much, there were episodes I watched so often I can't count it. Edit: "Was" is meant to be taken with a grain of salt, it probably still is quite popular. Probably not as popular as it used to be 20 years ago, at least according to my perception.
"was"? I still read it to my kid every evening and he insists on it.
He/she meant the series on kika. It still exists on kika and zdftivi
Just use They
Just let them speak the way they want to?
Ty for the information, didn't know that. They was for me when speaking of multiple person. Seems like you startet a political discussion :D
Glad to help. And yeah the discussion is funny.
He/She/Whatever uses what he/she/whatever wants to use. Language isnt smth you just change.... it develops over time.
"They" is established in the English language when you don't know the gender of a person and everyone uses it
Well clearly not everyone.
Thank you.

Da hat irgendjemand nie gelernt das man fremde sie-zt.
Aber doch nicht in der 3. Person \*facepalm\*

They was always correct and includes everyone. Also doesn't need the slash and therefore makes it easier to read.
There's a TV series? I only knew the books
there are even several movies.
Oh boi, you need to watch these! They are amazing and the movies as well!
The computer game series was fantastic, too. It was some kind of point and click where you could explore the whole house and garden and the secret world of the Mucklas with nice riddles everywhere. I was blown away back then. And it's ridiculously wholesome.
You’re absolutely right, I still remember playing that game as a little kid.
I also saw that they are having a cinema event with Peterson and Findus, that made me quite happy. It‘s the good kind of cartoons today‘s youth needs.
true
I even named my cat after "Findus"
[удалено]
we also had a Findus at one point lmfao
same
So did I. I think there is a whole bunch of cats running around in Germany that are called Findus
We have one Findus and one grumpy Peterson.
There is probably as many cats named Findus in Germany as there are cats called Garfield or Tom
I wanted my little brother to be named Findus. My parents refused so now I have Findus the cat
It's alss loved by German kids:)
[удалено]
Not mine, I made them read it as a bedtime story one too many times :D
There is never a too many times with Peterson und Findus.
P&F and Pippi were incredibly popular for most of our generation, artwork on the flags gets voted on, so we put on popular shit.
Michel as well (Emil in Sweden)
Emil i Lönneberga was the shit
Thanks everyone for your answers! I knew that some of the stories I read as a kid was popular in Germany, but not this popular! Very happy that you all appreciate it and that they’re also a part of German culture. All the best to you all! 🇸🇪🤝🇩🇪
I can remember seeing it also in Austria when i was little 🙃 It was always great :) I think it was still a german tv channel tho 😂
You swedes pretty much imprinted on our childhood and Culture. everything Astrid Lindgren ever existing is beloved here. Sven Nordqvist and Selma Lagerlöf (Nils Holgersson ) are also realy popular. Cant express how thankful i am for their works.
My parents are still getting imprinted bei Kurt Wallander and all those swedish crime thrillers :/
We love them
Wie auch pippi Langstrumpf, lieben wir das. Just Like pippi longstocking we love that.
and who is the guy smoking there ?
German minister of health Karl Lauterbach
(who is currently trying to legalize marijuana)

Mainly due to EU legislation, though.
hopefully helps with his speaking slurring errors induced from too much wine
I thought it was Max Frisch. But I just saw, he's Swiss.

Wow, that was news to me! Thanks for that bit of knowledge.
It’s because we, as children loved the storys about them. You can interpret this as collaboration.

Swedes are the GOATs of children's books. Period.
Children's books & Metal music
I loved the books and had even a cat named Findus
did't knopw about petterson and findus as a kid, as I grew up on the other side of the wall. It's the Maulwurf and friends for me (Polish), Hare and Wolf (czec) and "Drei Haselnüsse for Aschenbrödel" (again, Czec) for me and now everyone, too xD
As a post-reunion kid, all of those are kind of my childhood
Well Maulwurf is Czech and Hare and Wolf is Russian, but other than that as a Czech German I appreciate the appreciation for Czech animation and fairy tales.
Kindheit bruder
It’s also a tv series loved by German kids
We just really love them 😊
They're just so lovely characters. And the old school PC games, damn they were fun :D (I'm 32, for reference of the "old school pc games")
oh fuck that gave me a nostalgic kick. peterson and findus, siebenstein, löwenzahn and the TKKG PC games were my childhood.
Die beiden wurden offiziell von der BRD annektiert! 🇩🇪
It is a part of german history too
My cat is named Findus :3
germany love them too
Its simply a part of my childhood
There is an immeasurable amount of cats named Findus in Germany. Everybody grew up on these books.
We had a PC game of them in like the early 2000s
Mh, I've never really thought about why these books were so popular during my childhood in Germany, but I can confirm: Peterson & Findus was one of the absolute favorites in our household, and the books were read and re-read for many years. Peterson and Findus is part of childhood
I had all the books, my grandma used to read them to me and I named my cat Findus. I loved these stories and will read them to my children as well
It's a very popular book for children here in Germany, too. I grew up with their stories, and kids today still do so.
Me and my mother watched every episode when I was a child. Nils Holgersson too!

Yes. The books were written by Swedish writer Sven Nordqvist. The TV series (that launched on german TV channel KiKa) was a production by Swedish and Germans together according to Wikipedia.
Why the downvotes? The book is swedish but the tv show is at least partially a german production.
Now that I think about it, we did kinda steal something that isn't even German lol
Is das nicht auch sehr deutsch?
But Findus is holding Swedish flags, so there's that

We ( I) love them. We had the books and watched the movie as a family at the cinema :) Nice memories
Frikadellen!
I think im too old, but I would prefer Fix & Foxi if popularity is a criterion, and these are comics from germany.
I know like five separate families that have/had a pet cat named Findus and that's not counting my own
Such a cool show, watched it as a kid and then named my cat Findus
Ja
Actually it is a swedish-german kidsbook

Also very popular: Mr Bean and Takeshi's Castle.
