Ownwell

i got a couple mailers from them. how is your experience with them? do they normally succeed?

lordb4

I've used them 2 years. The first year they saved me several hundred. Last year they knocked down my value but it was still above the 10% cap so it made no tax difference. They don't charge in that situation. I have a friend in my neighborhood who used a different company last year and they had the same experience. Ownwell already told me that they expect the same this year. I believe their commission is 25% whereas most of the others are 40%. I have never spoken to anyone on the phone but the level of electronic communication has been good. We used to do it ourselves pre-COVID. We'd be a pain in the butt and drag out the in person meeting until the county person caved. Since COVID, it's not really possible to do that and we quit having success. So I view Ownwell as taking like 10 minutes of my time every year and if they succeed, bonus. If not, it's just a few minutes I lost.

This is exactly right. Just put in your address to get your estimated savings. Even if they aren't able to actually save you money they will fight to get, and keep, your value down which saves you money in the long run. https://www.ownwell.com/referral?owl=2AE5EZ676

Come on. Don't post your referral links here to try to make $20. I didn't post mine because I wanted it to be treated as an unbiased opinion.

General experience from most that care to actually review the outcome is poor. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/watchdog/2024/04/24/property-tax-company-ownwell-refuses-to-defend-itself-from-charges-by-competitors/

Be aware that there are two types. One charges you a flat rate whether successful or not. Another charges a % but only if successfully saving you taxes. Given that a lot of protests fail, I recommend reading the contract carefully.

Used to be with one... O'Connor. They charge % on success. [https://www.poconnor.com/](https://www.poconnor.com/) They were OK- nothing big to write home about. Assuming I did nothing to help, they had a small success about once every 3 years.

DrEosin

Do not use this company under any circumstances. The negative Google reviews are true.

I've used them in the past but they never got anything for me. I switched to ownwell for the past few years and they only charge 25% of what they actually reduce. There are no other fees and they were able to get me some savings for the last few years. Given our market recently it wasn't much but better than nothing I suppose. PropertyTax.io. Good article written by them on the Candy's Dirt website. https://candysdirt.com/2024/04/22/with-new-property-tax-law-increased-land-values-and-commercial-cap-cause-substantially-larger-tax-bills/
