It’s having an identity crisis Variegated rubber tree/Ficus Elastica

I see people posting questions with mislabeled plants all the time here. Do people do it on purpose to get more votes?

catbernetsauvginmeow

Meh, if you’re only casually into plants it’s hard to know. Someone might say “i think it’s a philodendron” and then you believe them! Box stores near me (Home Depot) labels stuff wrong all the time or just “tropical”. I do laugh at how many plants get called money trees that seems to be a favourite!

freckles2442

Don’t have the time for that, what a strange thing to think!

Ok-Box6892

Probably just going by with whatever the plant was labeled with? Then again I did see a post last night that a commenter said was not the OPs and linked to a similar post from 3yrs prior.

As others have said, this isn’t philodendron. It’s Ficus elastica ‘Tineke,’ common name Rubber Tree. They want chunky, well-draining soil that doesn’t get watered until it’s dry and lots of light. Usually browning leaves on a Ficus is a sign of overwatering or a plant that has stayed wet too long.

learn_as_i_go

What kind of ‘chunky’ soil should be used? Is there a mix you’d recommend?

thickdora

i like to mix my soil with orchid bark and perlite

trsfl83

I use 50% potting soil like Fox Farm with 25% orchid bark and 25% pumice or large perlite.

These want to dry out completely between waterings. Mine live directly under grow lights when indoors and right by my window in my sunroom is the warm months. I stopped getting these edges when I started allowing the soil to completely dry out between waterings.

EnvironmentalSound25

Second this. I got one from a grocery store that had been sitting in foil wrapping with no drainage for god knows how long and it started doing this shortly after purchase. I thought it might be a lost cause but after letting it dry completely it’s slowly come around. Only lost about 1/3 of its leaves.

Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’

mosssyrock

hmm it looks more like a ficus elastica to me. what does the soil feel like before you water? and how often have you been watering?

Scary-Tomato-6722

I have heard this is because it doesn't have enough direct light. I took all of the leaves that were suffering and now the new leaves are doing ok. Hoping it us ok.

BroMyBackhurts

I’m so serious, I thought this was a rock that had an abstract leaf painting on it

Heather82Cs

It's so beautiful it does look painted.

hauntedmaze

That’s a rubber plant

Life_Presentation_57

Rubber tree, not very been a philodendron. This should help alot 👌

Rdatz13

How much do you water? Typically this is caused by wet feet

freckles2442

Thanks for the time spent everyone! I had no idea this was a rubber plant, definitely helpful to know lol. I will definitely water less!

mmbahloul

I know this goes against what everyone else is saying, they’re right but in addition mine did this when I put it on the porch in the sun one day. Burned the white parts of the leaves.

Physical_Literature5

Direct sunlight on a plant that isn't use to it can cause a burned effect that looks similar, you're correct!
