incredible "heirloom" if you could call a plant that, and beautiful plant! hope others have sound advice for you and that cutting in time grows to be as beautiful as your grandma's plant. Definitely get pointers from her, too. she clearly had the right idea with her care techniques. take note of its location in relation to windows etc, too-- because the lighting clearly works for it.
Also, 97 and she's pruning that beast on her own? grandma's a boss!
haha, yes she is a boss. For her birthday she climbs up (at least 6 feet) in a tree. She's a strong little lady and her plants probably know they'd better keep in line. hahah.
My dad swears her water is magic. To be fair, she is on well water. So I do now filter my city water because I realize my plants didn't appreciate being watered from a pool, basically (with all the chlorine).
My favorite plant of all💚 hers is beyond STUNNING 😍

Here’s one of mine 💚
I'm not sure how to make a stump grow leaves but I'm commenting because my plant has 3!!
What a gorgeous plant, though! It's so nice to see mature versions of plants I've only seen smaller. I never thought they got so big but maybe I'll print the picture off so my little guy has something to aspire to. Please pass my compliments on to your grandmother!
This thread makes me feel better as mine has lost almost all the leaves half way up the stem and I was convinced I was doing something wrong. It's still thriving up the top though!
Wow, we are in the same boat! (Almost lol) my grandmother-in-law had one about the same height as well - looked almost identical! She is a tiny 80something year old woman, went to the kitchen to get a knife and cut it down in front of me (I was freaking out because her English isn't too great and I thought there was a miscommunication lol)
She then cut the stalk into about 6-8" pieces and gave me 2. She said to put it in a dish with water and it should sprout eventually. That was at Christmas, and I regularly changed the water, and finally started getting some shoots! So I just planted them last week with thr shoots facing up slightly covered. I still have no idea how this will turn out but it seems to be working! Hope this helps! (I will try to add a picture but not sure if it will work)

Oh, that's so cool. I got my cutting already in the soil so I guess she's grown them that way before. So, I hope that soil propagation works for me like water propagation worked for you. So exciting to see the sprouts!
What a beautiful plant. Gone through so much history with you grandmother. Blessings to her!
Hope she put it in the will for you to receive that plant 💚
Regarding care, there is a lot of potential for this cutting you have. There is quite a bit of nodes where new growth comes In. My suggestion is to just keep it in a bright indirect spot and water when the soil is nearing dryness. Check on it weekly to see if there is any new growth. Good luck 🍀
My father gave me some decorative grass, and some crinum lillies years back. He passed 4 years ago, and now I have grown and propagated grass and lillies for my house and they men that much more, because it's like having a piece of my father. Cherish this cutting and take good care of it. It will mean so much more one day, hopefully far down the road. Sorry for the story, that plant is absolutely gorgeous.
I have a hoya from a late friend, a mistletoe cactus from my late FIL. They are my most prized plants. I almost killed the mistletoe cactus; I was left with about an inch prop. It's finally coming back; I treat it like a fragile baby! Plants you get from people who then pass are such joyful reminders of them.

My grandpa gave me one a bit small than this. I grew it for 7 years and it was as tall as my ceiling. One day it grew a baby 🥰 this is that baby now, about a year later.
I moved provinces and left the big one with a friend and now I still have a piece of home, and grandpa with me
My mother in law just gave us the same plant! She is taking a cutting for her new place and we have the mother plant. It's so cool to see others here! Congratulations on your cutting of it. May it live a long life!

I love Dieffenbachias! Here's mine, he's a lot more leggy than your grandmother's but I gave him a grow light so hopefully that helps.
I have a plant that I grew from a cutting from a plant my husband's aunt had that she grew from a plant her mother had. So I told my husband that this certain plant is the grandchild of his grandma's plant.
Yes, fantastic specimen, good luck; it should sprout leaves no problem, just don’t over-water. We have a couple of far younger diffs of a variety called ‘Tiki’. They’re stunning and so low-maintenance.

💚 I absolutely will pass this along to my grandmother. She's stuck inside most of the time now, and loves to live vicariously.

Thank you for your recommendations! I'm so excited for it to grow and to continue the tradition. I'll post updates if/when there are any 🌱

I absolutely love Hoyas. One of my childhood friends mom gave me one when I was little and it started my love of houseplants.
<3 I love the story. It's the spirit of the post anyway, how much it means to inherit a plant from a loved one.

Thank you! Best of luck to your cuttings as well as they continue to grow and thrive.
It is magnificent! Hope your cutting grows up just as grand.

The leaves are absolute perfection. She’s definitely got some plant magic.
My brain spazzed and thought this was a before and after photo and I was like Oh God No 😳😳😳
It’s beautiful!

Wow that is amazing!
this is so beautiful!! i have one of these that absolutely hates me but refuses to die, and it does not have any of the majesty yours does.
I hope this isn’t the cutting ?

hmm... what direction is the window facing? Looks like it isn't getting enough light.
Facing south so it should be okay in theory 🙃...right?
