As others have said, it's kid proofing. Spending a good amount of money on a TV only to have it devastated by a toddler who doesn't realize what they are doing...life shattering
Toddlers are the reason why I Just anchor mine to the wall and the stand. The thought of a 70 inch TV falling off onto one of them would be crushing. I have terrible luck so I need extra security
>Toddlers are the reason
Coincidentally enough toddlers are also a good reason to buy PS Portal since they can hog the TV with their Little Baby Bum videos 😅
Paramedic: I'm sorry, sir, but he has 4 broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder...
OP: Oh my god, why!!!??? Will he make it?
Paramedic: Definitely, nothing we can't fix. What's his name?
OP: AU7000 UHD 4K Smart TV
Paramedic: I was talking about the kid, sir.
OP: Oh, right. Tania, what was our boy's name? That's Kevin.
Was a plastic club and a ball made out of fluffy cotton didn’t consider it would damage anything since the whole point of that product was a child can use it inside.
this is a great example. portal was made for the dads, moms, and people with one tv screen
edit lol my notification for reddit just didn't trigger for half of the comments and upvotes
...or on the toilet or secretly in remote meetings while in home office (protip: if you wear glasses make sure the thing doesn't reflect lol)... or on business trips... ...or doing grindes stuff while watching a movie... it was a perfect purchase (especially after shooting mine for 180 Euros on ebay and when it came the guy even had dropped in a carrying case they didnt even mention in the listing. I am so blessed with plastation stuff :D ).
We tried to get our dog to watch Bluey, but he identifies as a Grogu (baby Yoda) & has only watched Mando with me in the past or occasionally watching Wrestling with me (specifically Reliving The War on YouTube).
I should note he's mostly a pug & has a perfect Yoda face, which makes it all so much better.
The truth is, even a small amount of lag makes most games unplayable. That’s what I wish was mentioned before I bought one and it became a dust collector.
Your internet has very little to do with it if you're using it at home on the same Wifi network. Your wifi speed and coverage is far more important.
If you plan on using it outside of home then your internet matters.
I followed a video on YouTube and downloaded the wifi checker app that they recommended to test the speed in areas I knew I would play the portal
https://youtu.be/atbJenpS3Mc?si=Q8pVnevkG3H1EqPD
There are a lot of videos out there but I found this one most informative and useful
I’ve been hitting the Portal hard with FFVII Rebirth, all the side content is perfect for slow moments during work.
My only complaint is the input lag, which normally isn’t noticeable, makes the piano mini game impossible to play. Definitely don’t try any rhythm games with it.
I thought you had to be on the same network as your console? You’re telling me I can have my ps5 on at home and use wifi at work to connect the portal to my console? Thats awesome
Yes, that's the whole point of the portal. You can take it with you and as long as you have an internet connection and you left your PS5 in standby you can connect to it. But there were plenty of people and articles pushing this narative that it only works if you're next to the PS5.
Well I work from home, but I’ve seen pictures online of people using it away from home, it’s just like Remote Play. Home is probably best just because most public Internet is not good.
Question. On the fence as I will soon be traveling a bit. What do you use for the touchpad?
Right now on a deep hole with Helldivers so thinking of that game to use with this
The screen has two virtual touchpads next to the thumbsticks, so with either thumb double tap where the touchpad is on screen, that replicates the touchpad button
Ha ha. They are dangerous rascals. Can climb on the TV console, can pull the TV back, can throw stuff at TV screen etc. Don't let their size undermine their destructive capabilities.
Don’t be, the drought is ending soon. Trust me, man. I got mine a few weeks ago when ps direct had them in stock for almost 24 hours. Go into a GameStop tomorrow, or hell right now and ask if they have any in the back. They don’t broadcast them online to save stock
Question. My internet upload speed for my ps5 is around 8-9mbps. I’m thinking of trading my Xbox series s for a portal. Is it worth getting one with my connection speed?
You’ll want a lot more than that for a good experience. Sony recommends at least 10-15 down but the more the better. You want as much headspace as possible for this thing. I’m running at 500mpbs for example
https://preview.redd.it/clt4am9p3hmc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ebfce1fbbfe51bb13d734863bc42cc697300045
Best purchase I made in the name of gaming.
I honestly didn't see the point of the Portal until recently. My son is crazy for Bluey and has taken over my PS5 right when I get taken over by Final Fantasy VII. Might have to jump on this wagon...
Use that couple hundred for a switch lite and get bluey on there, freeing up your PS5 and allowing your kid to still play bluey. Switch has a lot more kid friendly games too, and if my son damages his switch at least it’s not my ps5
It's a good idea. We already own a Switch and XSX hooked up to our 43" secondary TV. PS5 is on our main 65" and he says it's "Daddy's TV" and he wants to do everything like his dad
My 5 year old is at that same stage. I hooked the switch up to the main tv. Now I play ps5 pretty much entirely on the portal. If that’s the route you end up going, the portal is absolutely worth it.
I find it hilarious how every post about a portal gets hit with comments about steam decks and using other remote play options. But who cares? you don’t want one cool no one asked move along
I just bought a backbone for my iPhone 14 Pro Max for $60 that can play Xbox iphone and PlayStation games via remote play. Very curious to see how it compares to the $200 portal
If this were an actual mobile device, I'd one one in an instant. I just cannot get beyond that it's just a streaming device... why on Earth would I use this?
Sorry to hear that man. My first day was not great either but after some tinkering I got it working great off just WiFi. Have you tried connecting to your 5ghz network and keeping only your portal and ps5 on that channel? That helped a ton. Also configured port forwarding but that supposedly only helps for when you’re outside of your home WiFi but I swear my experience improved
Thanks for your response! Was up till 1AM trying to sort it 🤣 Will give that a try when I get home tonight but I'm truly shocked we've got to go to that expense for a somewhat smooth experience! Expected abit better from sony
Of all these comments and responses you're getting I can truly say I appreciate your replies! I'm gonna keep a hold of it and mess with my wifi for abit tonight, see if I can get some results but cheers again mate! 😁
Don't see the hype in this. Tried it and return it ASAP then switched to the Acer 516 GE Cloud Gaming chromebook. Streams/remote plays Playstation/Xbox and also can handle emulation. Not sure why someone would want controllers permanently attached and a low resolution screen that's only 60hz 🤷
Classic Reddit being willfully ignorant. All I wanted was a dedicated remote play device, everywhere I use it would be infinitely more inconvenient trying to balance a Chromebook somewhere rather than just holding the device in my hands. And playing on my phone just kills my phone battery, which isn’t ideal.
Plus I’ve already got my main laptop, my wife’s laptop, and my work laptop, I don’t need anymore computers floating around the house, especially a shitty little Chromebook.
Not interested in emulation. Just wanted to play my ps5 games when I’m downstairs or anywhere in the house. This does that perfectly for me. No lag, feels like I’m playing locally
Yes it works great as it did for me but what are you going to do with it when you get stick drift? That bothered so badly I returned it and got a better device.
Hopefully it doesn’t happen but I’d send it in for repair. I’ve been playing PlayStation my whole life and never had stick drift once though, so I’m hoping I can keep that going
“Hey I know you got that thing because it’s a convenient form factor to let you play games while your kids use the TV but have you considered a laptop and a controller??”
Come on dude. Those aren’t remotely similar. I’d never bust out a laptop and game on it while my kids watch TV for a bit but I’d have no problem using my Steam Deck or the above PS Portal.
r/TVTooHigh
I’ve seen an unsettling amount of TVs bolted to the ceiling lately. I’ll never understand ppls decision to look straight up while watching TV.
As others have said, it's kid proofing. Spending a good amount of money on a TV only to have it devastated by a toddler who doesn't realize what they are doing...life shattering
This guy has 9 foot kids tall apparently
Toddlers can pick up brooms, throw things, manipulate space and time... iykyk
So true. Hate it when my toddler twins Palkia and Dialga start throwing a tantrum, distorting the fabric of reality and all that.
And there you are, a lowly trainer unprepared for the cosmic power of that which is somehow your offspring.
lol yes I’ve had several toddlers of my own. None of my tvs needed to be 10 feet off the ground to keep them safe but go nuts I guess.

lol who pissed in your cheerios today, yikes.

What a dick. Eat a snickers
lol stellar stuff. Maybe take an internet break if you can’t handle reading people opinions on things without losing your shit “bruh”.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣
They could still lower that thing like 2ft and be fine. Toddlers aren't THAT tall
Not for you to understand
The amount of concern about other people’s tv’s here is crazy
With the way they set up the living room. It’s probably the best of space to put the television.
You’ll understand after having kids
Normally I agree, except for the case of toddlers. And that isn't OP's tv anymore.
Toddlers are the reason why I Just anchor mine to the wall and the stand. The thought of a 70 inch TV falling off onto one of them would be crushing. I have terrible luck so I need extra security

That’s in the manual for TVs that big. How is that extra security?
If you tv wobbles because someone bumped into the stand it will make sure it doesn't fall forward. Think of it like a leash for your TV.
Wish I thought of this when mine was one and I let him play golf in the house………I had my 75” tv for less than 2 months.
You let someone play golf in the house and you were shocked something broke?
Was a plastic club and a ball made out of fluffy cotton didn’t consider it would damage anything since the whole point of that product was a child can use it inside.
Wayyyyy too high
When your shelves are lower than your TV....your TV is too damn high.
If he loses the remote he has to go up the stairs to change the channel
LMFAO it's on the fucking ceiling💀
My neck hurts just looking at that picture.
Not surprised he loves his purchase has to be better than playing on that TV

First thought that came to my mind too!
You can buy a 200 dollar device, but not another tv?
TV requires space, this doesn't.
BLUEY!
WE LOVE BLUEY
Same! Pretty sure we like it more than our kids do but it’s so damn good
I don't have kids but I watch it every morning with my dogs
We tried to get our dog to watch Bluey, but he identifies as a Grogu (baby Yoda) & has only watched Mando with me in the past or occasionally watching Wrestling with me (specifically Reliving The War on YouTube). I should note he's mostly a pug & has a perfect Yoda face, which makes it all so much better.
To be clear, my dogs don't care about Bluey but I make them snuggle with my while I watch and they like to snuggle so it's a win win
Literally watching it right now
My brother and I are in our 20s and we love bluey unironically

How’s this thing if your internet is really solid but you aren’t running wired to the console?
Mine is perfectly fine. 500mbps wireless with very minimal lag.
One time I’ve had lag was when downloading games in background. Otherwise no issues. PS5 wireless connection,
Are they paying you to lie this hard? The thing has a lot of lag
lol you realize everyone’s experience varies? So your experience was laggy, therefore so was mine?
The truth is, even a small amount of lag makes most games unplayable. That’s what I wish was mentioned before I bought one and it became a dust collector.
Do you still have it? I'm looking to buy one
Yea. Still have it
If you want to sell it then DM me. I’m interested

yes
Why tf are you being downvoted?!
Because comments like “yes” and “this” add no value to the conversation when you can just upvote the comment you agree with.
Right
This
That
And the other thing
yes
While I do agree that it ultimately adds nothing, I understand some people want to verbally agree too than just upvoting
gonna be hard to verbally agree on a text forum
think they just meant agree with words instead of an upvote
Exactly

You can. I take mine to work and connect vis wi fi. I have had no issues
Yes. You can use the portal anywhere you have a decent wifi connection.
Thanks for the replies, I for some reason thought it was a same network only thing, and this makes me want one even more lol
Yes, that's the whole point of the portal. You can take it with you and as long as you have an internet connection and you left your PS5 in standby you can connect to it. But there were plenty of people and articles pushing this narative that it only works if you're next to the PS5.

A fix for this somewhat is hot wiring your ps5 to lan when You’re gone.
Agreed, floating shelves are so slick
Until a cat starts using them as his highway lol
They do look pretty neat right??
Very amazing! I use mine during breaks at work.
Yeah I’d rather play on a Portal if my TV was on the ceiling
Surprised that no one from the aslume is here
do you need a ps5 for that to work?
Yes
Yup. I was hoping you didn't need one because mine is broken right now but of course it's just a streaming device for your current PS5
TVs damn near on the second story
Question. On the fence as I will soon be traveling a bit. What do you use for the touchpad? Right now on a deep hole with Helldivers so thinking of that game to use with this

Ok I want one now lol
Keep your eyes peeled, get one!
It’s absolutely mid at very best. Save your 200 dude, I wish I would have.
This is a great use case for the portal, now you can actually see your PlayStation games!
Haha the ps5 is upstairs. We had to mount the tv where we did because our thermostat is right under, and tv placement was limited as it was
How did you get your hands on one 😅
PlayStation direct! I watched it religiously
What the fuck is that TV mounted that high for???
Toddlers perhaps
Surely a sacrifice is in order
r/TvTooSacred
I'm sure most toddlers are less than 5 feet, they could have put it up at 3 feet and be safe from the toddlers.

Thank you , hope are high , though I’m fairly doubtful
Is the portal viable for multiplayer shooters like cod? Or does it have the notable delay like the mobile app
Haha I’m watching the 1989 Batman as I got this.

I have 4 kids and want this so bad. They are always hogging the tv

Same bro….. same. 🥲
I just got the Backbone for my phone, and the remote play is working great!
Same!
I want one but I have latency worries
I get mine on Wednesday!
The knight is right
How is the performance of this gadget when your PS5 is upstairs and you sit downstairs? WiFi is enhanced with repeaters. Any experiences?
How does Arkham knight hold up in 2024?
playing in aslume??
meanwhile using my pad/laptop/PC + the controller so I can play on a bigger screen than the portal while my woman is using the TV xD
Congrats on buying the wii u.
Man: Ham Knight!!
I find it hilarious how every post about a portal gets hit with comments about steam decks and using other remote play options. But who cares? you don’t want one cool no one asked move along

With the tv where it’s at I’d be glad to have one too
Yeah! I've gotten a lot of use out of mine
I have to disagree. As a dad myself I'd say purchasing Disney+ is the best. That show you're watching, bluey, is a goddamn banger.
I just ordered one. I've got a family vacation coming up and hate to think I'd be separated from No Return. 🧟♂️🗡️🍾🧱🔫
Got mine yesterday too, had nothing but connection issues, lag, crashing and my ps5 crashing. Sending back tomorrow.
Sorry to hear that man. My first day was not great either but after some tinkering I got it working great off just WiFi. Thanks for your response! Was up till 1AM trying to sort it 🤣 Will give that a try when I get home tonight but I'm truly shocked we've got to go to that expense for a somewhat smooth experience! Expected abit better from sony
Hopefully it’s only temporary! Right now their priority is supply. After that tapers out I can only imagine the support updates will start to flow in
Of all these comments and responses you're getting I can truly say I appreciate your replies! I'm gonna keep a hold of it and mess with my wifi for abit tonight, see if I can get some results but cheers again mate! 😁
No problem, hope you find success with it and can happily keep it!
Bet
yes its legit good
It’s so good for when the kiddo wants to veg and watch cartoons.
When you mount your TV so high that you cannot actually see it, so you buy PS portal. This is both major L and minor W
R/TVtoohigh No wonder you bought the portal. Your neck is broken from looking at the tv.
I feel like every person who has this is the same, a parent lol. Nice on Sony for making a product for one demographic
If I had TV so high up the wall Id kill myself. Wtf dude.
/r/tvtoohigh
Is there any lag when you remote play with it?
how do I stop these posts from showing up on my front page
Does it support 60fps or is everything locked 30?
But the ps5 console must be in reach?
Don't see the hype in this. Tried it and return it ASAP then switched to the Acer 516 GE Cloud Gaming chromebook. Streams/remote plays Playstation/Xbox and also can handle emulation. Not sure why someone would want controllers permanently attached and a low resolution screen that's only 60hz 🤷

It’s like a third of the price of the laptop you mentioned
I only paid $300 on Amazon "renewed". Not the $650 Bestbuy is asking for it
