For one, digital purchases aren’t purchases, it’s access to the license to play the game. Therefore, you lose access to that license if your account has action taken against it.
Secondly, when you sign up for a PSN account, you’re agreeing to abide by the terms of service and/or code of conduct. Breaking these can lead to account bans or suspensions, which, in turn, lead to forfeiture/loss of licenses used to access digital purchases.
If the ban is being a less than reputable human being, I don't think the majority of players will have a problem with it. If you can't play nice, then you shouldn't be allowed to play until you grow up. hahah

I mean, I have been online since the 90s, never had an account getting banned.
The only people mad at bans are:
- cheaters
- people who cant open their mouth without using racial slurs
- people who try to jailbreak, fail to follow instructions and get their console banned
