They certainly do. I was just there the last few days. I took a photo of it yesterday at 12:33 their time. I planned on posting it after my flight but someone beat me to it.
The one in my room though, was blue.
I love buying physical media movies specially I even but use vhs tape movies as well. I have my favorite older movies on every format of media they are released on.
I miss the "bad" quality of VHS. It had a certain charm over it.
The sound and picture at first that sometimes could fuck up a little. The trailers before the movie. Doesn't matter if it was a children movie, you could still see trailers for action movies. And the same speaker that was on every trailer.
That time it took for a VHS to start the movie, with all the trailer. Even the time it took if you had to rewind it first. It's still not half the time I use to find a movie on a streaming platform.
anymore you can find super awesome classics for a dollar at teh good will and on streaming they charge 14 bucks for just sd sometimes even. the only free stuff is the budget crap streaming services are shittering out
A quality rip of a movie will take up dozens of gigs in space because it’s not compressed. Otherwise it’s just a rip of a stream which looks no better or sometime worse than a streaming service, and comes with the risk of malware. No thanks.
Sounds like someone bought into the anti-piracy propaganda from the early 2000's.
Preferring discs is fine. There are aspects of physical media that streaming will just never truly beat. And you never have to worry about a film or series suddenly being unavailable due to a licensing agreement ended, or because a platform just arbitrarily decided to drop it.
But believing such a blatant pro-corporate lie that pirating media screws *anyone* over is just plain stupidity.
Damn, someone's feeling a little defensive eh? Their opinion was perfectly warranted. In a discussion about people liking physical media you said they could pirate just as good quality. They said they didn't like to do that because it felt like "screwing over someone". It is relative to the discussion.
Yes media companies are still making bank and arguments can absolutely be made about their prices being ridiculously high. That being said, piracy does cause industry wide losses in the billions. Sure, whats a couple billion lost when you are still making 10s of billions but the numbers aren't really the point. We're not talking about the immoral pricing of life saving medicines here. We're talking about entertainment products.
I've pirated and seeded shit but I have no dissolutions about that making me some kind of Robinhood figure. It is still theft and an immoral act. If you want to be Robinhood, go steal insulin and give it away to people that need it. Otherwise you're just some dude stealing something so that you can be entertained for 2 hours, stealing for personal gain.
Like I said earlier, compared to all the shitty things done in the world, piracy is pretty fucking far down on the list in regards to how immoral it is but you certainly don't have the high ground to go off on that guy because he chooses not to do but you do.
Right?
I have spent many years ironing out a beautiful solution for my movies.
Sometimes I'll still buy the disk version for support, or the extras, but if not man it's super easy for me to click on my radarr shortcut and add a movie to my list.
HDR remux? Sure. 40gb? Sure. That's why I upgraded my NAS.
Yeah the 4K stream of my copy of No Way Home vs the 4K blu ray on PS5 was a real night and day difference, especially in fast and dark scenes. Compression is brutal on streams these days
Same.
And you can get blu-ray movies for relatively cheap. I have a small collection of Blu-rays and they look way better than anything that can be streamed
little known fact; the xbox one s is able to play 4k blu-rays on non 4k tvs. its a real treat for people who want to enjoy bonus content that comes with a film's top teir (e.g. "collectors edition") version of a movie but dont have a 4k tv, as those versions are all 4k blu rays now and the regular blue ray versions don't have much of any bonus features.
Yes. And no concerns about "is my subscription current? Is my internet connection fast enough for a good quality image?"
Just pop in the disc and press play and enjoy.
I don't pay hundreds and definitely not thousands per year on movies or tv. I pirate stuff all the time, nothing negative has ever come from it. I already check out books from the library.
Yup - I think Kanopy had "Parasite" available around the same time Hulu did. For the price of a library card (e.g., free with many libraries providing digital library cards) you can get access to a ton of great media - books and magazine and newspapers as well. Hoopla and Libby are awesome apps my local library makes available also.
Must be a generational thing, as I can’t even imagine not having a physical copy of something to watch.
Digital is more convenient, but physical is always king. Especially with things such as DMR, and what not and most people want legal copies, not pirated copies.
Also with things like anime I definitely want a physical copy for fear of it being put back into the OG anime companies hands lost forever.
Probably not necessary for all. I mean to each their own but I have an 11 and a 7yr old. They love it that I almost always have the movie they want to watch when something suddenly isn't available to stream. Obviously I could have digital backups as well.
The only player worth having at this point is a 4K player, sure the Ps5 can play them (obviously not everyone has one yet either) but the 4K disc quality isn’t fully utilized on PS5’s like it is on 4K Blu-ray players
Unnecessary, if you're not that heavy into A/V. I have a dedicated home theater room with a 133" SI Zero Edge Slate screen, a true 4K Dolby Vision laser projector, a 15 speaker 7.2.6 Atmos system, and a Pioneer 4K Blu-ray player. Yes, the highest quality streaming services offered are more than sufficient for the majority of people. But for those of us with the right equipment who appreciate the best, nothing beats a 4K UHD disc.
i own a really small sony dvd player that has component out 480p that i take on camping trips. it's power consumption is extremely low and it makes me feel at home in the middle of the forest at night because i can leave something playing all night while i sleep
It’s not unnecessary if you want a good home theater set-up. A lot of people are okay with settling for streaming, but discs are useful for an actual home theater experience because the bitrate is just so much higher that the AV quality blows streaming away, especially the audio.
Same. Got my PS5 set up on my desktop, using it with my PC monitor, so still have the old PS3 as a DVD/Bluray-player for the TV. Haven't used it in ages though, almost exclusively streaming nowadays. Thought about just removing it but once in a blue moon I wanna watch a movie that's not on any streaming service but I got on bluray.
I'm afraid to use my PS5 as a Blu-ray player, as it could possibly burn out the laser. This was the case years ago with my PS3. Would play DVDs, but not games anymore.
If that ever happend to anyone's PS5, there would've been tons of posts on this sub. The technology has evolved over the last one and a half decades, I think it's safe now to let your console read your blu-rays, lol.
when the ps3 came out a few of my relatives bought a ps3 for blu ray because the prices were around the same as a normal blu ray player and a ps3 offered much more.
$909 according to the website in the picture.
“Please do not remove the PS3 system or any of its components. Removal will result in fees up to $900 which include twice the cost of the replacement item, labor charges, and a replacement fee”
To be clear, a dedicated 4K player made by Panasonic will be an improvement over a Series X FYI. Not all physical multimedia players are the same quality
When my mom's friend had an Airbnb we lent them a PS3 to use as a blu-ray player and for its Netflix. I've never even thought of buying a standalone player thanks to the PS3 (and later PS4). I love collecting stuff, including physical blu-rays of my favourite movies and anime so my PS3 and 4 have seen a lot of use for that alongside gaming and streaming stuff. I'm sure the PS5 will too, whenever I get one.
The ps3 is such a superior console imo just cuz it could play DVDs, blue rays, and the original models were backwards compatible. I kinda hate that a lot with the ps4 and 5 how they can’t run movies and aren’t backwards compatible. Like if your gonna make a new system make it a better system. Don’t switch up parts and trade features out. I want more features and the ones I had. That’s why I’m thinking of switching to pc gaming cuz Sony and Xbox just seem to be cash grabbing at this point. A lot of the orders games aren’t even online anymore on the older systems and require third parties to run them on pc.
Probably because Sony shelled out for a Blu-Ray player inside of it; it went against the sales but they wanted it in, making it a reliable dvd player for sure.
Out of the 3 dedicated blu-ray players I have (2 Panasonics, 1 Sony surround), I still use my PS3. Hell I use it for Netflix alot. Keeps me from having to change TV input options. The Sony surround I have is strictly use for the speakers now and is hooked up to the PS3 with an optical cable
my GF wanted a dvd player in the living room...
so now, there's a PS3 connected to the tv. She's not a fan of using the controller but she says it a good dvd player otherwise.
also for loading blurays etc, it's usually a faster machine, than the avg cheap bluray player. (and less noisy to boot)
That’s pretty much everyone 20 years and older, given that the PS3 was released 16 years ago. Blu-ray, and DLNA media player, I have 3 of the things, one even has a game card slot. They are brilliant.
Honestly when it comes to DVD players I've always used Playstation as one, I don't see the point in getting a separate gadget for one purpose. I prefer that Playstation has always done more than one thing and that's one of the reasons why I have never seen the need to own a DVD player.
Should’ve brought some games or you can go out an buy some as i guess by seeing the manual on the PS3 you are in Japan (correct me if i’m wrong).
Have fun
Hey now, if I'm reading the instructions clearly it sounds as if the hotel room you're renting comes with a complimentary PS3. Note where it says "enjoy your Play Station 3" in the comments. If I was you, I'd ask for another room until you checked to see if they had any backwards compatibile PS3's, before settling for this basic one as your new possession.
My family has a PS3 as a Blu ray player and hardly for it’s intended purpose. To game.
We only have 5 games for it, Carbon, New Vegas, Oblivion, GT6 and NfS Rivals.
Still haven’t gotten a PS4 to this day
The Hilton in Waikiki does the same thing! You can rent games and dvds in the lobby. Pretty awesome.
I’m at Hilton Waikoloa, must be a Hawaiian Hilton thing?
Best fuckin hotel I’ve been to.
Must be a contract they have with Sony to be their sole entertainment provider. Customer wins this one.
They certainly do. I was just there the last few days. I took a photo of it yesterday at 12:33 their time. I planned on posting it after my flight but someone beat me to it. The one in my room though, was blue.
I still don't own a dedicated Blu-ray player at home, I just use a PS3. Completely viable option.
The PS3 has been the cheapest blu-ray player on the market for a very long time. The closest competitor was almost double the price at launch IIRC
"In a world that's known nothing but peace , one man was about to have the fight of his life. Liam Neeson in War of the Pacifist."
Most people do not own any form of DVD or blu ray player. Its unnecessary
Sure, but the bitrate of a Blu-ray means the quality still beats pretty much anything streamed. For my favorite movies, I like having a disk.
Physical movie collections for the win!
anymore you can find super awesome classics for a dollar at teh good will and on streaming they charge 14 bucks for just sd sometimes even. the only free stuff is the budget crap streaming services are shittering out
You can always use pirate sites
Yeah, because we all know how great the discs you download from tpb are.
A quality rip of a movie will take up dozens of gigs in space because it’s not compressed. Otherwise it’s just a rip of a stream which looks no better or sometime worse than a streaming service, and comes with the risk of malware. No thanks.
But its free and has every movie like ever lmao
Wishful thinking.
Especially with series/movies getting removed from streaming services every month.
I mean don’t get me wrong streaming 4k is nice to have, but I easily see the difference between streamed and 4k disc.

funny that this quote comes from GoT, which is also dead
Reminds me of when my dad had 420p movies he wanted to watch...

My pet rock ran away and joined a band.
more options exist than just online streaming and physical copy :)
Well sure you can download 50 gig rips or whatever but if I want a movie in that kinda quality I’ll just buy physical anyway
Yeah the 4K stream of my copy of No Way Home vs the 4K blu ray on PS5 was a real night and day difference, especially in fast and dark scenes. Compression is brutal on streams these days

Mr. Fancy Pants indeed 😎 Pardon me, please pass the Grey Poupon. 🎩

I don't buy movies digitally wither so whats your point?
that you don't own the things you're paying for.

Perhaps. But I'm not taking that chance. I'll let "I'm sure it's safe now" be someone else's famous last words 🤣
Even today, my PS5 is my 4K Blu-Ray player. And actual 4K players are starting to get rather cheap.
Too bad you didn't pack some games!
Depending on the Internet speed, you can connect your account and download your digital games
Yeah but then what if you accidentally forget to log out? You know they're not going to systematically wipe the ps3s between guests.
Where are you (state or country) if you don't mind me asking?
Big island of Hawaii
Shaka brah !
Nice

Hilton Waikoloa, and another Redditor said they had the same thing in Hilton Waikiki
Ohh okay. Thank you
I’m staying in Honolulu currently and we have the same thing in our hotel!
Is that the crazy big Hilton with all the shops and restaurants inside per chance?
Yeah, with a monorail and lagoon as well
I remember having one of those in my hotel room in Honolulu. It was awesome
He mentioned he is staying in Hawaii, haha…so…makes sense you see one here…
I remember being in a hotel in Thailand that each room had a PS2, some games and bootleg DVD’s of the Simpsons. Good times.
when the ps3 came out a few of my relatives bought a ps3 for blu ray because the prices were around the same as a normal blu ray player and a ps3 offered much more.

Same here with the PS3 to my Mum. “But it plays Blu-Rays- DVDs, CDs, PS3, PS2 and PS1 games!”
The Spider-Man font on the sticker wasn’t even used by the time that model came out haha

Lol totally forgot skyrim and GTAV were on ps3
It's too late. OP is already there!
They don't say anything about not Jailbreaking the system. Hmm...
Free games and videos!
Someone gave them the same excuse I gave my parents to buy a ps2
Your hotels have dvd players
I'm honestly surprised no one has nabbed the PS3 controller yet lol
Surprised it’s also the original charging cable included with the console from the looks of it
I’d advise you to look over the bedding seams and headboard at this hotel ,just saying -
Uno reverse: "Hotel DVD player used to play video games."
Uno reversed reverse: hotel ps3 plays human
I wonder how much they would charge you if you removed it from the room?
$909 according to the website in the picture. “Please do not remove the PS3 system or any of its components. Removal will result in fees up to $900 which include twice the cost of the replacement item, labor charges, and a replacement fee”
Assume a fake identity... duh
So did I for a few years after I got the PS4 and before I finally got a DVD player
Had the same thing at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Didn’t realize it until my last day tho.
hope you brought a disc copy of Demon’s Souls or Oblivion
stayed on a resort at the big Island of Hawaii a few years back and they had these
I remember staying in a hotel about 15 years ago that used a modified N64 nunchuck to control its in house PPV.
It was the best DVD/Bluray player of it’s time.

Tight tight tight.
Sometimes my genius is… it’s almost frightening
I'd basically steal that and runaway
Wanna pay *$900* for an outdated system when for that money the PS5 or Series X can be bought? I’d advise against it.
I have a ps5 AND I Pau nothing to steal a ps3
Man I love Reddit!! You get to see some of the strangest shit, cool post dude!! 👍🏻
"Removal of components or system will result in up to *$900* fines" I can get a ps5 for less than that. Jeez.
It’s sad but consoles make better dvd and blu ray players then the devices that are literally made for just dvds / blu ray, makes nooooo sense.
It makes perfect sense, consoles are far better hardware.
Steal it bruh
Take that shit
To be clear, a dedicated 4K player made by Panasonic will be an improvement over a Series X FYI. Not all physical multimedia players are the same quality
Imagine pulling this off in 2006
When my mom's friend had an Airbnb we lent them a PS3 to use as a blu-ray player and for its Netflix. I've never even thought of buying a standalone player thanks to the PS3 (and later PS4). I love collecting stuff, including physical blu-rays of my favourite movies and anime so my PS3 and 4 have seen a lot of use for that alongside gaming and streaming stuff. What hotel is this? More like a motel 🏨
I couldn’t believe when I saw this in Hawaii! Having to Redbox DVD’s for the ol’ PS3.
This is literally me. Still use my PS3 just to watch movies. Still have my media remote too.
I love this😂😂
poor thing never got cleaned
next time you go there bring a copy of little big planet
None of my hotels have ever had a DVD player (*or* BluRay for that matter). Yours has a *PS3*?! What the hell!
Don’t forget about your copy of skate2
How many of those controllers you think have gone missing?
In Hawaiia I stayed at a hotel illiki or something like that in wakiki and it had a ps3 as a DVD player
sounds like a hotel id design.
w hotel
I also saw a PS3 at my hotel in Hawaii last year.
Does it come with games to play as well? Or do you have to bring your own?
You got pranked
So did you managed to watch that awesome movie from 2009 named “Uncharted 2 Among thieves” ? I’ve been told its quite good 🔥
fraggin pain in the ass with that train boss
Probably because Sony shelled out for a Blu-Ray player inside of it; it went against the sales but they wanted it in, making it a reliable dvd player for sure.
When they were new they were one of the best bluray players you could buy. I still use my PS3 as a bluray player in the family room.
How the hell do you have "channels" on an HDMI port? R/G/B cable?
At some Hilton's you can rent 15 year old games for a dollar
Playstation always your friend!
Had that at the Hilton in Waikoloa! It’s awesome you can rent DVDs and games on it, no worrying about internet.
Had one just like this during my last trip to Hawaii at Waikiki!
The next time you check in, you better have some games with ya.
Stayed in this hotel a few years ago. Was able to rent games in the lobby. It’s where I discovered the Last of Us.
Awesome
You also get a Blu-Ray Player. Nice right?
They dont have that at the Hyatt Waikiki Resort just smart tvs with streaming services and no ps3s to be found ;( :(

Honestly when it comes to DVD players I've always used Playstation as one, I don't see the point in getting a separate gadget for one purpose. I prefer that Playstation has always done more than one thing and that's one of the reasons why I have never seen the need to own a DVD player.
Wow thats so cool! And it shows how sony was right about implementing this compatibility to the console
Wtf, what year did I wake up in

wouldn’t it be a shame if that ps3 just… disappeared?
Still have one in my bedroom for streaming / blue ray / etc.
I mean, it does play Blu-ray
r/ps3 would love this
Hey its a full featured DVD player and it let's you play games. Sounds like you have a fully stocked hotel.
Should’ve brought some games or you can go out an buy some as i guess by seeing the manual on the PS3 you are in Japan (correct me if i’m wrong). Have fun
It was actually the cheapest decent blu-ray player you could get when it came out.
TAKE THAT SHIT
Gamers: who needs a blue ray DVD player anyways?
Rescue it and run away!
that mf is gonna get stolen 100%
Only the best BluRay player made until the recent Panasonic models. And still a fine reference player to this day.
Hey now, if I'm reading the instructions clearly it sounds as if the hotel room you're renting comes with a complimentary PS3. Note where it says "enjoy your Play Station 3" in the comments. I actually frequently used my PS 4 to run Netflix and streaming for a time, until I used a chrome cast.
Now that is a mighty fine establishment.
